Gilbert looked at her reddened face. He suddenly came to his senses and let go of her.

Kisa coughed violently as a sudden burst of fresh air rushed into her lungs, and her bony body slumped down the wall. She kept trembling terribly because of the cough. Under Gilbert's condescending gaze, she looked like a gnat struggling to stay alive.

"Don't worry. I won't kill you. But I will make your life worse than death."

Kisa ended up being locked up in the garret by Gilbert. She desperately kicked and punched the door and hissed in a frenzy. "Let me out. Who are you to lock me up? I almost died five years ago because of you; so why are you still locking me up now? Let me out. Let me out."

"You had it coming to you five years ago." Gilbert's bitter words came through the door. "Grandma hasn't woken up yet, and Sara hasn't been found. As long as you live, you are to pay for what you have done." He forced the last sentence through his teeth, carrying a full load of hatred and disgust.

Kisa lay helplessly on the floor, a familiar pain hitting her in the heart. She did not understand how a man could be so heartless. 'Does he really want me to die before letting me go?'

But Kisa would not resign to fate. She almost died five years ago, and that made even the debt of him saving her life previously. Now, she owed him nothing, and he had no right to take her life. She owned her life now, and no one may take it away. She fought back the grief and anger, got to her feet, and looked around, telling herself she had to find a way out of here. Otherwise, the ruthless Gilbert would torture her to death. After looking around the garret once, her eyes landed on a shabby wooden window.

It got dark quickly on winter days.

When it was completely dark outside, Kisa went to the window and pulled the rotten wooden window open with all her strength. As the wooden window opened, an icy wind blew in, causing her to cough violently. The cough almost made her battered body fall apart. It took a long while before cough subsided and she then looked out the window. It crept her out because her location was at least 30 feet above the ground.

But when Gilbert's ruthlessness came to mind, she shut her eyes and jumped out of the window with no hesitation. The height of the fall was nothing compared to the horror of being tortured by Gilbert. Even if she was unlucky and jumped to her death, it was better than being tortured to death by that man.

The chilly wind whistled past Kisa's ears. When she hit the ground, she felt a sharp pain in her ankle. It was so painful that she could not stand up for a while. But she could not afford to waste time. While it was now dark and no one was around, she had to hurry to get out of here.

Kisa gritted her teeth and forced herself to get up. Bracing the pain, she limped forward. Just as she reached the gate, someone shouted from behind.

"That woman has escaped. Go get her!"

Kisa shuddered and immediately ran outside without hesitation, never mind the injury on her ankle. She told herself that she must get away from that man, no matter what. As hurried footsteps approached, she began to sweat profusely due to anxiety. But she gritted her teeth and pressed on.

A dazzling pair of headlights swept in her direction, and then she heard the screeching sound of tires. Kisa fell to the ground in a heap. Her knees were just an inch away from the front of the car. Her heart beat wildly, her body trembling uncontrollably at the sight of the man stepping out of the car.

Gilbert grabbed her by the collar and lifted her up, his face grim and terrifying. "Kisa, you really want to die, don't you?"

"Let go of me, Gilbert. Let go of me." She struggled desperately, kicking him with her feet.

But the man seemed to feel nothing. He carried her in stride back toward the Kooper residence.

Thrown into the garret again, Kisa almost broke down mentally. She got up, limped toward Gilbert, and hissed. "What do you want? If you really hate me so much, then kill me, kill me."

His icy eyes lingered on her red, swollen ankle for a few seconds. He then glanced toward the open window before he walked out with an expressionless face. The door slammed shut. Kisa broke down and shouted, but there was no response, just as she had in prison. That despair and fear came back up.

She slumped helplessly to the floor, her initial grief and anger slowly turning into a helpless plea. "Gilbert, please let me go. It was my fault. I shouldn't have loved you. Please let me go. I swear I will never love you and appear in front of you again. I beg you to let me go, please."

On the stairs, Gilbert's hand holding a tray tightened, and his face revealed nothing of his emotions.

Andrew cautiously ran up and asked, "Daddy, who is that woman? Why did you lock her up?"

"Go back down. Don't come up here."

Gilbert said with a serious voice and then walked up the stairs with the tray in his hand. Andrew pouted, knowing there must be something wrong.

As the door to the garret opened, Kisa scrambled over on her hands and knees. "Gilbert, will you leave me alone? I will clear my name off your grandma's case and help you find Sara. I know you have always hated me, and even my feelings for you make you sick. But don't worry, I will stay far away from you from now on. I stopped loving you a long time ago. Trust me, really."

"Take your meal," Gilbert said in a deep voice, as if he was holding back his emotion.

Kisa shook her head. "Please let me go."

Gilbert took a deep breath, finally exploding in anger. "Let you go? Over my dead body."

Now Kisa was completely driven mad. She kicked over the food on the tray and yelled at Gilbert, "What the hell do you want?"

Gilbert's face turned grave, and he pressed her to the ground. "Don't force my hand."

Gilbert looked at her with a frown. "What do you mean?""I heard Ariella say that she still has a special contract with Kisa in place.""A special contract?""Yeah. Wasn't she Ariella's assistant before?"Gilbert looked at her and waited for her to continue."If Ariella is the one who dismisses Kisa, then Ariella is to pay her a sky-high amount of compensation. Of course, if it is Kisa who resigns, Kisa is to pay Ariella a considerable amount of money. With that contract in place, Kisa has to return to Ariella as an assistant, and you can find Kisa easily then.""Who drew up the contract?"No one in their right mind would sign such an unreasonable contract. It was akin to binding the two together. Yet Ariella and Kisa had signed it. As a female artiste, Ariella would not ask her lawyer to draw up such a contract. Kisa was not capable of drawing up such a contract either. So Gilbert wondered from where such a contract had come.Sharon shook her head. "I don't know who drew it up

"Ma'am, there's a painting like this in my daddy's room."Kisa was washing the vegetables, and her heart skipped a beat when she heard what Andrew said. She had given that painting to Gilbert when she was thirteen. Kisa never thought he would still keep it. She thought he probably wanted to use that painting as a constant reminder of his hatred for her. Otherwise, there was no other reasonable explanation."Wow, ma'am, your cooking smells so good." Andrew burst out in admiration when she brought the cooked dishes over.Kisa, on the other hand, did not respond to him, as the boy's deliberate ingratiation made her a little uncomfortable."Ma'am, this is the best meal I have ever had." Andrew ate with gusto, his little face full of satisfaction.Kisa stared at him with mixed feelings and felt sad. In the backyard, Kohen looked at his older brother's calm expression, a hint of worry in his voice. "Bro, are you alright?""I'm fine," Hayes said, adjusting the blanket on his lap. "Tomorrow, take me to meet those medical geniuses you found.""Oh, sure..." Kohen nodded in agreement, but after a moment, he could not help but ask, "Bro, what did that woman say to you that made you change your mind so suddenly?"Hayes gazed at the stars in the sky, his voice cool and distant. "She told me she's doing well, very happy. Then she pointed out how pitiful and miserable I am right now. She asked me if I don't feel envious, knowing how well she is doing compared to me."Kohen grimaced, realizing that the woman had provoked his brother into action.Hayes lowered his eyes, a faint smile on his face. "That's right. How could I not be envious? So, I want to heal my legs, live a good life, and show her that I can do better than her."Kohen felt a pang of sympathy for his brother. From Hayes's

Mia asked.Eylul replied, "His health is fine, but his legs have remained the same. Kohen has found top orthopedic experts for him and even sought out Kelvin Hoover from Calthon, but he refuses treatment. For so many years, he hasn't even stepped outside the backyard.""You mean he's been living in the backyard all this time?" Jensen asked gravely.Eylul nodded. "Yes, Kohen wanted him to live in the main house, but he refused. He only likes staying in the backyard. Moreover, the room he stays in used to be..." Eylul glanced at Mia. "You don't have to feel burdened. In a way, I forced you. And you must have always disliked me. Actually, I didn't come to you for money; I just wanted to see you. Now that I have, I should go. Jensen, from now on... take care."With that, she walked away, fearing that if she lingered any longer, she would not be able to leave. But after only a few steps, she was embraced from behind.Jensen's voice was low and hoarse. "Stay with me."Mia trembled at his words. Jensen continued. "But I still have so many things to do and someone in my heart I can't let go of. I don't know... when I will be able to give you a satisfactory answer. I would risk my life for him, but I can't do this."Adrien stared at her flushed face and gently chuckled, his words loaded with meaning. "Aren't you feeling all hot and bothered yet?"Mia frowned. Her body was indeed getting hotter and more agitated. 'Why would Adrien ask this? Could it be the drink...?'As the thought crossed her mind, her heart sank. Seeing Adrien's cold expression and the man's playful smile, Mia turned and ran. But before she could take more than a few steps, she was dragged back. Weakened by the drink, her desperate struggles were futile. As the man pressed her down, playing with her like a toy, she closed her eyes in despair. She thought she could never face Jensen again. It was this man who had taken him in years ago. At that time, Kohen was young, a carefree and privileged young man. He mocked himself. "I never should have taken you in back then. In the end, it was I who harmed my own brother."Jensen pursed his lips, not knowing what to say, only feeling an unbearable pain in his heart. It was the first time he felt he owed someone.
