The world around me seems like a damn right kerfuffle. The child is screaming bloody murder as a fist lands square in my jaw. Tears brim my eyes as I try to gain my bearings. My fingers grab frantically for anything it can cling to. The moment I latch on, I pull the person toward me, hoping to pull them off balance as I draw my legs up. Without clear vision, I plant my feet on what I hope is a torso and not just one leg and I heave, grunting with pained effort as I throw the person off me.

A hand grabs mine and yanks me up, placing their hands on my shoulder and spinning me. My vision slowly bleeds back to me through the wetness of my own tears, and I focus on the woman in front of me and the man to her right. To their right lays a dead wolf, its eyes still open and blank. The little boy has dragged himself to a tree further off, covering his face and begging for death.

“Which one of you assholes hit me?” I growl.

“That would be the tall asshole,” Jade announces beside me, indicatin

~Sebastian~It took all of three minutes for us to eliminate the threat in the cave. Thankfully, we had the wolves outnumbered, seven to five. I didn’t even have time to take one out myself. As it turns out, our allies were tired of being cooped up, and a fight had been exactly what they needed to get their moods turned around.Luna Cynthia had a lot of pent-up rage to take out since her mate’s untimely death and holy shit. Is she scary? I have fought my fair share of rogues or random idiots who dare try to fight with our pack in the past, but never have I come across a woman with so much anger in her. In the calm flickering of the fire, she looks docile, almost innocent as she shrouds herself in silence, listening to the buzz of excitement from the fight. But she is anything but that.“Are all the Thundering Comet pack warriors so weak?” Alpha Kaïs asks, walking back towards us after tossi

I’m suffocating. There are no words, no line for me to cling to in this sea of lies. I try to force my brain to work, telling it that her admission does nothing, means nothing. I have gained nothing and lost nothing, so why am I incapable of uttering a damn word? Nickolai reaches out for me, his hands falling on my shoulders. I can hear the timbre of his voice, but his words sound distant. A rough shake has me sucking in a deep breath for the first time since Luna uttered the words ‘yes’.“Seb, you need to breathe,” Nickolai says, his voice slamming into me like a wall, pulling me back to the world of the living.“I am breathing,” I snarl at him.I’m sitting. I glance around at the floor, my legs bent and angled to sit in the chair across from the Alpha’s desk. Huh, not sure at what point I sank into this chair, but I’m grateful for it now.

I grab extra clothes and shoes for Avi, stuffing them in a separate bag. He came here with nothing and hasn’t been here long enough to acquire anything more than what he was wearing and the pajama items he wore while he slept. Thankfully Nickolai and Avi are similar in build, though the shirts and pants might be a little oversized they will make do considering we aren’t trying to please anyone. I already stored food and water in one of the hummers I intend to steal. Well, borrow. Ok steal, the chances of it making its way back are slim. The door opens behind me and I toss the bag off the bed and stand, waiting for the person to step in completely. The moment I see Tank’s large frame enter and close the door behind him, I scowl. “No knocking?” “I have never knocked before. Why? doing something stupid?” He raises a brow. “Unlikely,” I grumble, t

~Wren~It may sound a little dramatic, but—I am dying. This child looked so small before but now that he is asleep and I’ve been carrying him for hours. He is a damn sight heavier with every step. The sun is up, and yes, we took a break. (ok it was multiple breaks.) But that doesn’t make this trek any easier. We have been so damn lucky in avoiding anyone else thus far, but my back is dripping sweat and Jade has to keep wiping my forehead.“Are we almost there?” I ask her, my voice terse.“Hey man, I volunteered to carry the little pup.”“He didn’t want you to carry him. He wanted me.”Jade sighs and shakes her head and looks back down at the general instructions on the super vague map Avi was using when he was in the territory.“Whatever. Anyway, it looks like we should be there. We are looking for what again?

I yelp and Jade loops her arm with mine, swinging me out of the way and inserting herself into his grasp. She grunts when he yanks her from me, but in a flurry, she sheds her clothes as she shifts into her red wolf. The big guy doesn’t have a moment to correct himself before she latches onto him with her teeth. Sharp pain in my skull draws my attention to the man yanking my hair, and I drop to my knees to avoid the fist flying toward my face. Thankfully, freeing my auburn locks from his grip. I deliver a solid punch to the offender’s genitalia. He drops to the ground, his face red, and I take the moment to pop up and punch him in the nose, his bone-crunching beneath the sheer anger behind it.There isn’t a spare moment to witness the crimson blood I am sure is pouring from his nose before an angered hiss erupts behind me. I spin down to my knees in a wide sweeping motion, taking down someone who I hope isn’t Jade. The deep grunt sends me into a tailspin as I leap onto his chest, wail

~Sebastian~Not a single person tried to stop us as we took off. Nickolai stood with his arms crossed, leaning against the open bay door while Tank, Avi, and I loaded in, a permanent frown on his face. Guilt made me second guess my choice for all of a moment. Like his father and mother, Nickolai falsely assumed that I was leaving because of the new information that had come to light. I could have corrected that thought, but in the end, the results are the same. I am leaving, and Nickolai has his own obligations holding him here. I no longer have such obligations, which, for the short duration of the ride, tore me apart. I love this pack and the people it protects. The Alpha and Luna are important to me. Not in any longing parental sense, but they had been good to their pack members, regardless of their lies and betrayal to me personally. Nickolai was the hardest to leave, he always was. His kind, trusting nature is bound to teach him some tough lessons in life. Lessons I always felt

“Wren!” The voice squeals and everything in me explodes as my body twists and turns, tearing through my clothing and shifting into my wolf without thought. I’m ripping through the trees with a low growl, leaping over rotten downed trees and gliding under vines that try to slow me down. I push my legs faster than they have ever gone before. No idea where I’m going or the proper direction of where the sound was coming from. I try to focus on my hearing but fail when all I hear is my erratic, beating heart and heavy panting. What if I am too late and she is hurt, or worse? No. No, I can’t imagine her being dead. The thought alone has my chest feeling hollow and my mind spiraling out in fury. I would know. I would feel that she is gone. Wouldn’t I? The trek takes entirely too long, But I finally see an opening and hear voices speaking. I kick harder. I need to see her. The need to touch her, see that she is okay, is blinding. Finally, I burst through the trees, snarling when I see the g

~Wren~ Sebastian leads me by the hand as we work our way down the route they took to find us. Jade was able to convince Leo to take a piggyback ride from her so I could hang back slightly and spend some much-needed time with the gorgeous man beside me. I watch his side profile, my eyes unable to leave his handsome face. I know he can feel my stare when his lip twitches up and his eyes slide to meet mine. “What is it Birdie?” He asks, his voice low and rumbling through his chest, sending shivers down my spine. “I just can’t believe you came for me,” I mutter. I had hoped he would. It’s a lie to say I didn’t want him to. I’d missed him more with every step I took in the opposite direction. His position and Nickolai had always been the most important things to him. He was afraid of ‘us’ before running away from it at every turn, yet here he is. Not only chasing me but catching me and refusing to let me go. “Do you remember what I told you before I had to leave?” He asks, looking s

“Leo,” I breathe. “Where are–”“Addy and Grandma are safe. I can’t leave you, I’m sorry. Don’t be mad, but I can’t let anyone hurt you, Mom.” I’m sobbing as I want to reach out and try to grab and shelter my poor sweet boy who has grown into such a sweet little man. At freshly twelve he has been training for the past two years so he can be strong enough to protect himself. We should have known he was doing it to protect us. One day, he will make the best alpha of this pack.A lanky man steps into the doorway and Leo shifts his weight to his back foot, preparing for battle. My heart is in my throat as I watch the man lunge with a growl toward my son. I fell off the bed, trying to protect him. Leo is so graceful in his movements as he glides out of the way and drags a dagger along the man’s back. As long as the man doesn’t shift into a wolf, Leo might be able to hold his own. His cut isn’t deep, but it’s a strike that makes the man bleed. He growls in annoyance and then chuckles as he

  • Rebel Rising The Lost Alpha's Mate   Chapter 88: Epilogue one

*** THREE AND A HALF YEARS LATER***~Wren~“You really should sit down,” Jade says, following me as I pace the carpet, my dress flowing around behind me. Seb has been gone for three days, and those three days have been atrocious. He is further than the mate bond can extend, so my mind has been hollow and lonely. It also doesn’t help that my hormones are raging and my mate is fighting in a battle on the other side of Nickolai’s pack.“No” I shake my head. “No,” I repeat, more sternly, tears welling in my eyes. I groan in frustration at the stupid tears that seem to come unbidden all the damn time lately. “Luna, you will walk yourself into labor before Alpha can get his ass back here,” Jade says, rubbing my back and giving me a sympathetic look.I want to slap the sympathy off her face. The person who should rub my back is my mate. He should be here next to me as I try to make this baby come. But no. He has to be a hands-on alpha and lead his troops himself. I used to think it was sex

  • Rebel Rising The Lost Alpha's Mate   Chapter 87: New warriors and a Beta

The musty, cool air of the dungeons clings to me as we come up to the prisoners we captured weeks ago. Half the men are anxiously waiting at the bars while the rest lean on the walls or stare out the bar window. Most of the men are on the younger side, a few even looking closer to Nickolai’s young age of eighteen. When they notice me coming in with Tank, they all straighten up and glance at each other nervously. These ten men are not the only prisoners we collected that night. In fact, they are only a small portion of the number of warriors we were able to round up. I don’t think killing the others would be wise, but letting them go is not an option, so instead, we house them here providing the essentials to survive without having an entertaining life. “Alpha,” they greet me in unison, as though they have been rehearsing for days. I shoot a look at Tank, who is trying not to laugh. “I hear you all wished to speak with me. Spit it out so I can move along to other important matters.”

~Sebastian~“How is she?” Nickolai asks through the receiver. I pinch the bridge of my nose, remembering Wren’s beautiful speech and the tears that wet her cheeks. There is no way to erase the hurt in her eyes and the ache that she feels so keenly at her father’s death, but she had been perfect, stunning, so perfectly Wren. “As good as can be expected.” I sigh.“Good. I’m sorry I missed it.” I can hear the disappointment in his voice, but we all understand that he has duties to tend to. “When is your ceremony?” I ask him.“Two days.”We sit in silence for a minute, each of us waiting for the other to speak first. I know Nickolai hates I can’t be there for his Alpha ceremony. And it’s not that we don’t want to be there, it’s just that the timing simply doesn’t work for me and Wren. Or anyone in the werewolf community, since there is a war that is resulting in higher death tolls daily. Especially in our allies’ packs lately. “Look, I know you wanted us to be there…”“I get it, Seb.

  • Rebel Rising The Lost Alpha's Mate   Chapter 85: Best friends

“Things have been tense for the past few weeks. Your lives have been turned upside down, you have a new Alpha and Luna and we are in a war to defend what we know is right. But today isn’t about any of that. Today, we are all the same. We are a pack mourning our losses and the people we loved.” He looks down at me and I know he wants me to take over. “For as long as I can remember, life in this pack was full of tension and fear. It always felt like we were living half a life. The men and women on this memorial fought and died for what they believed in. They fought for their loved ones and for you and me. I’m not sure how many of you remember my dad, who he was, and what happened to him after they took my mother from his side, from me.” My eyes look over at my mother, who is watching me closely. “He died saving me,” I say, taking a deep breath. “Like so many others, he was sick most of my life. Constantly trying to be the only parent and provider while being denied the ability to work

  • Rebel Rising The Lost Alpha's Mate   Chapter 84: It's time

~Wren~The marble slabs glitter as the sun beams down as if a beacon on the dead. Highlighting their loss and what it means to us, our pack. I hate that we have two empty slabs. Two enormous gray and shiny hunks of empty rock are ready for the next names to be etched. It’s a sobering reminder that the dead are gone and the living will always follow. How we go and when we go isn’t up to us. Life is fragile and fleeting. All the living can do once the ones we love have left, is keep them alive in our minds and heart. Originally, the entire area was going to be a meadow of wildflowers, something we give back to the earth, and in return, she would bring us beauty to console our aching hearts. But growing such things takes time–time we didn’t really have. So Sebastian and Tank suggested we plant some annual flowers and then next year we will prepare the ground for the wildflowers. Tank even said we should add some benches and stone walkways so people can come and reminisce with the people

  • Rebel Rising The Lost Alpha's Mate   Chapter 83: Night Light

~Sebastian~I stand from my desk, checking the clock and groaning when I realize it's two in the morning. It’s been a week since Nickolai left and today is Wren’s fathers memorial. She has done a great job of avoiding the thought by occupying her time with planning and Leo. Today could go one of many ways and I’m going to need as much sleep as I can muster if I have to hold her while she cries. It’s my least favorite feeling in the world, knowing I can’t do anything to ease her pain. But at least this is a pain I can try to comfort. The very thought of her curling into my body as I settle in the bed spurs me to move faster as I hustle out of my office. I make my way up the stairs leading to our room and push the door open, Inhaling deeply. I used to foolishly think the best smell in the world was Wren’s. Now I know it’s our combined scent. The perfect balance of the two of us that is both calming and inviting. I close the door gently behind me, grimacing as the door latches. I move

I give Nickolai a tight hug, clinging to him tightly as he squeezes me back. When I pull away, his hands run down my arms, stopping at my wrist where he looks for a moment and shakes his head. “Does it weird you out?” I ask him, my lips twitching into a soft smile as he flounders with how to respond without hurting my feelings. I know it creeps him out. When he first saw it, it was all he could look at.“It shouldn’t.” He admits, “But It is definitely a little weird.”“Try having it be your hand,” I say with a chuckle.“They couldn’t… like… put it back on or something?” His question isn’t malicious or ill-willed, more of a curiosity. The werewolf's body is strange and amazing with its healing properties, but even healers struggle to keep up with what the body is capable of.“I know in the human world they would have sewn it back on if the cut was clean.” I shrug. “But it was chewed off and after the fight, as I’m sure you remember, my hand wasn’t the only appendage littering the grou
