Rayne's POV

I couldn't stop thinking about Nathan's safety and my father too of course. I wondered what Zia was going to do when she realized that it was only Dad and Nathan that were in the house. She was definitely going to be very upset.

I forced myself to unpack, fold my clothes and put my other belongings away, trying to find order amidst chaos but it didn't really work for me because every sound I heard made me jump a little in fear. I showered and decided to check up on the kids just to see that they have resumed their sleep and I went back to my room and just laid down, my thoughts playing games with me but finally, exhaustion won over my anxiety and I drifted off to sleep.

I opened my eyes to the bright rays of the sun that was peeking through the gaps in the curtains and I groaned in annoyance. I would have to make extra effort to close them properly every night. Sitting up from the bed, my mind immediately went to Nathan and my father. What was happening back at the house?

This was already the next day and I was still here.My father's face contorted in fear as he continued to listen to the person at the other end of the phone, his eyes darting between Nathan and I and back again. Whatever it was that he was listening to was definitely a terrible news. The conversation felt like an eternity, every word that I couldn't hear was definitely putting Dad on a tight spot and just looking at his facial expression was making me anxious. Who the hell was he talking to? Just when I thought I couldn't take the suspense nymore, the call finally ended and his hand was shaking slightly as he lowered the phone. "What is it?" Nathan asked, his voice shaking too "What did he say?""The men he sent to the warehouse for survey are not responding. That's a problem for us"Nathan didn't say anything, he just kept

Rayne's POV I watched him stand up from the chair and walk towards me and the urge to fight filled my body but logical thinking held me back. He was bigger, stronger, and clearly armed. If I wasn't careful I was going to get hurt and achieve nothing and fighting in front of the kids was not going to look good but if I had to then I wouldn't hesitate but Mary's silent plea not to fight him was playing in my mind.He stopped just a few steps away from me and just stared at me and when it started to get extremely uncomfortable, I said "Alright, Elliot," forcing a smile. "Let's talk. What exactly do you want?"A look of surprise passed through his face, but it was quickly replaced by his usual smug look "Oh, how the mighty have fallen," he teased. "Reduced to begging now, are we?"I resisted the urge to scoff, "This isn't about me, Elliot. It's about the children and my family. What is it that you want?" He just studied me for a minute, like a predator gauging its prey. "You took ever

Rayne's POV The room fell silent after I asked for another favor. I knew it was a bit of a stretch but I hoped that it worked because my plan depended on it.The words were heavy in the air as his smug expression disappeared and was replaced by suspicion. "What is it?" he snapped at me, his hand instinctively going towards the bulge in his pocket where I presumed he kept his weapon."The pancakes," I said, feigning ignorance. "They were delicious, but they gave me a terrible stomachache. I think I might need to use the restroom before we go."It was a very flimsy excuse, I knew, but it was all I could think of at the moment. His eyes narrowed, his gaze looking between me and Mary as if he knew that we had a plan. "This better not be some kind of trick," he threatened, his voice very low and menacing.I sighed very loudly and dramatically, "Honestly, Elliot? Do you think I'd risk my children's safety over a bathroom break?" I countered in mock shock. "Look, I won't be long okay?" My v

Rayne's POV He was at a loss definitely. Mary had gotten away with the kids and I was with a knife and I hoped that he knew from the look on my eyes that I was not going to hesitate to use it on him. We stood in our position for a while, him unarmed and in my mercy, me with a knife that was glistening under the sun, reminding both of us of how sharp it was and the extent of the pain it can cause.I had to finally a way to escape but I had to do something to him that would make sure that when I did, he was not going to be able to come after me."You're losing? Do you want to call a truce?" I offered the option to him and I watched him closely, monitoring every move and facial expression. He seemed to consider my offer for a moment from the look on his face but I wasn't so sure but just as I was still trying to understand what his face was trying to say, the look of anger returned and it seemed more than the previous one and that was saying something because he was really angry before

Rayne's POV I was tired and really needed to rest my body but I couldn't because I might miss a chance to escape. Elliot was driving with reckless abandon, raising so much dust and hitting every bump on the road, sending my already aching body through more pains. My shoulders were crying for mercy but I ignored the pain and focused on my plan, looking out the window and taking notice of the road and buildings. We had since passed any form of civilization and were just surrounded by trees and thick forest and I thought it was perfect because there was a lesser chance of anyone spotting me if I made a break for it. But how to do that was the issue. My eyes darted around the beat up truck looking for something that might help me but I couldn't see anything, nothing that could help me overpower him. I was getting frustrated.Suddenly, the sun focused on something on the dashboard and I looked closely to see that it was a lighter. It wasn't much but it was something as a very risky plan

Nathan's POV I was angry and scared and seeing Zia sitting across from me was making it all worse. She said she suspected where Elliot might have taken Rayne to and for some reason I didn't trust her but it wasn't as though I had a choice.Mary and the children were going to be here soon, I had wanted to go find them after Mary's call but my father in law had insisted that the bodyguards do it instead since I was not in the right state of mind to drive and even though I had protested against it when he said it, i knew that he was right."He probably just took her so he could get back to me" Zia started speaking all of a sudden just as she had been doing for a while. She would mutter things to herself and sometimes it was going to be loud enough for us to catch it but other times it wasn't. Rayne's father and I would exchange a look occasionally and it was clear that we were both definitely thinking the same thing because there was no way in hell that Zia was normal. She was either al

I asked her for the upteenth time and she rolled her eyes at me once again"If you don't trust me then you shouldn't have entered the car in the first place" I chuckled but it was very short-lived "You should know that the word trust and your name can't fit into the same sentence for the life of you" I told her and she opened her mouth to say something but closed it back. She should know that I was ready for her whatever it was that she was ready to say. Nathan's POVMy heart raced wildly as I ran up the stairs with Jack and Alex behind me. We reached the rooftop, and my heart sank as my worst fears were confirmed. A lady lay unconscious on the floor and I walked slowly to the body scared it was Rayne but it was Pamela. I felt bad but hoped she was still alive. I looked up to see a masked figure dressed in a black suit pointing a gun at someone. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Rayne shivering with fear at the gun pointed at her. “Hey, let her go!” I shouted, finally getting the attention of the masked person. The figure looked at me and back at Rayne and slowly removed its mask revealing a long hair flying with the wind. It was Zia. She had a wicked grin and spoke with a sinister tone. “Oh, my darling. You're just in time to witness the end of…this bitch.”I walked cautiously to her so as not to make her shoot. “How did you get in here?” I asked.Zia chuckled and answered calmly. “You're not the only one with spies, Nathan. Rayne's POVI pulled up to Rayne's house, my second home. Nathan and I were getting off on the good side. He was never that bad if I was being honest. I was just jealous. It was now a habit to spend the weekend with my biological family. Many times Dad had asked me to come stay with them but I couldn't abandon my adoptive parents and he understood.I planned on taking Rayne on a sibling date. I was going to live up to my big brother's expectations since we both missed growing up in each other's lives. Her kids were my kids and I couldn't have enough of them. I had a little chat with our father while Rayne dressed upstairs in her room. When she came down dressed in a lovely casual top and jeans with a baseball cap, I cheered because we had unknowingly worn the same thing.Janet crawled up to me, and she lifted her body making an attempt to stand but her feet wobbled and she fell but I caught her in time. She giggled and raised her hands up for me to carry her. Nathan came by and after

Zia’s POVI didn't say much and let Lucinda do her stuff. She presented the paperwork from the court to the head officer and I was free to go. Nothing felt better than leaving the mental hospital. It was a breath of fresh air. I had all sorts of emotions come to me. It was a mix of relief, anxiety, and uncertainty. Lucinda let me into her car and flashed me a sly smile. “Get in,” she said with an up tone. “We can catch on what we have missed on the way. I want to know everything.” I scoffed and entered the vehicle. “You wish, old witch as if I would ever tell her anything. Like I would ever tell you anything. You deserve nothing but total hatred from me,” I thought, faking a smile at her. She drove as I sat in the car and the image of the mental hospital gates getting distant made me want to fly to the moon. I didn't trust her so I let the questions fly around to be sure. “How did you know I was locked up in an asylum?” I asked, my eyes fixed on her body movements to detect if sh

Zia’s POVMy body grew numb as I lay in the cold room. My mind became foggy as I Lost my sense of time. I hoped Sarah was able to make it far away. She could always find a way to help me but how she would go about it bothered me. My teeth chattered uncontrollably and I couldn't feel my fingers or toes. White smokey gas came out of my nose and mouth anytime I breathed out in my vain effort to warm myself. I clutched down to the side of the room, with my hands folded across my knee.I was about to give up and pray for death so I could end it all, but the door creaked open and a worker stepped in. I raised my head and he looked at me with disgust. There was no hint of flinch of pity in his eyes. “Well, well, well. Look at what we have here,” he said, mocking my situation. “If it isn't the little troublemaker? How do you feel? Do you want to escape or perhaps you want to create another show?”I shivered and tried to maintain eye contact. Every time I tried to speak, my mouth felt dry and

We worked for nearly two hours and the room was almost completely clean. I wiped the sweat on my forehead with the back of my hand. We rested a bit as we finished the work. Sarah lay beside me panting. I whispered to her. “What do you say about getting the hell out of here?”“You don't mean..?” Sarah whispered back, her gaze still fixed on the ceiling. “Yeah, leave her for good,” I answered. “How are we supposed to do that? The hospital thinks we are crazy and it would take a long time to convince them that we are sane enough to be discharged, we came here because of a crime,” Sarah replied. “I wasn't talking about convincing anymore. And for all I know, I am pretty sure they can tell we aren't crazy. We have to escape,” I said confidently.Sarah shivered and sat up immediately to think. “That would be

I got to her table and carefully sat on the opposite seat so as not to aggravate her in case I was wrong. “Hi,” I said, smiling. I looked around to make sure none of the nurses, doctors or any officials were watching. “I'm Zia,” I said, giving her my hand for a polite handshake. She looked at me with a hint of curiosity then at my free hand and she slowly let out her hand and shook mine. “Hey, I'm Sarah and I am not crazy.” She said calmly but in a happy voice. “Glad to see someone else has their head right. I was worried you would…” I said, but was unable to finish the words, afraid it would come off as offensive to her. “Koo Koo. Nuts missing and screws flying. Nah, I'm fine. I just act along sometimes so I get to be left alone and not poked with annoying needles all the time,” she explained. She was a chatty one and I liked that. I needed

Zia’s POVThe prison room was cold as I was alone in my room. I glanced at the toilet from my small bed. The bed was only large enough to carry only me. I felt devastated, angry at Rayne but pity for myself. How did I move from the queen of the business world to this? And Elliot? That bastard had betrayed me. I had betrayed him first but it still didn't give him the right to leave me like this.I had spent a month in this disgusting cell, the prison room was neat and I was lucky for someone to pay for me to stay alone after a week of torture and bruising from the other prison mates. I had begged the warden for a phone call to call my Dad, Rayne's father but he didn't respond to any of my calls. Maybe, it was Dad but I was moved to the upper-class prison cells where I could stay alone and not have to worry about fighting for where to sleep with five roommates for the night or being woken up with kicks. The inmates were cruel and I was subjected to slavery. I began to feel how my maid
