XAVIER

Ares knew she was a wolf.

I could hear his voice, bellowing within me. She’s it. She’s it. I did not understand for the life of me what it meant. What is it?

Now I understood. Her wolf was his. They were linked at the soul.

It made sense now, why I had always been so drawn to her. Why, from the moment I had met her, I felt this unwavering desire to rest my lips on her skin. Why I had kissed her forehead the night she slept in my chambers, shortly after purchasing her from the shop.

Perhaps, it was this reason above all else that I was drawn to Valerie. Perhaps it was not entirely due to the fact that she was from Westshield. Perhaps it was not guilt that drove me to her, perhaps it was simply the way fate tied us together.

But something must have happened to the wolf within her. Something that cursed it to a deep, unbreakable sleep. It was unusual, after all, for a wolf to stay dormant within someone—unless they were Omegas, of course. And if that were the case and Valer

XAVIERAll at once, we turned to Alyssa. Two slaves?I could see the look on Valerie’s face, the question in it echoing my own. Perhaps one of them was Ava.Alyssa blinked up at us, shrinking back into herself at the sudden attention. “I…don’t know if it’s related,” she said, sounding hesitant. “But the two slaves were certainly strange. My father regarded them as sex objects, and most certainly played the part. I suppose that’s why he liked them so much. They didn’t put up a fuss. They just did all of the things they knew he enjoyed.”“How do you know of this?” I asked, feeling slightly appalled. Her cheeks heated, a light shade of pink. Then she shifted and fumbled with her fingers in her lap. “My father is quite open about his sexual endeavors. He does not tell these things to me, but I hear him when he speaks to his friends. I know all about his promiscuity.”“And the slaves?” I pressed. “What were they like?”“Different than any slaves I’d met before,” Alyssa said. “They were cer

VALERIEIt was no surprise that Xavier didn’t believe in the fourth prophecy. The validity of sorcery was still questionable at best, and even if it did exist, the whole thing was too ridiculous to believe in.He was right. Anyone could have been pretending to be a wizard. But if that really were the case, how would they have gotten a hold of the ring? Artifacts like those should have been tucked away behind a glass box in a prestigious museum. Or perhaps, sold at auction to the highest bidder. But the wizard did not look like a well-off man. He looked like a simple human—as far as I could tell. I did not, after all, know what was beneath the mask.“As much as I love the idea of magic and reading about sorcery,” Alyssa began, “I suppose that does sound like a bit of a joke. How would it even be possible? Not just to bring her back, but…to have the ability to end all of us? It isn’t like she’s a weapon of mass destruction.”“Perhaps not,” said Lucia. “But it could be that she has speci

VALERIE Dowson was dead. They led us to his corpse, and I did not expect such brutality. Such pure carnage as I looked upon him. Blood poured from an open wound in his neck. Another in his stomach. His eyes were frozen, wide in disbelieve. In horror. He laid in a puddle of his own blood, and something about the coppery smell of it was turning my stomach. Alyssa made a sound of distress at the sight of him and twisted away to hide her face in Ralph’s chest. He seemed unprepared for her reaction and hesitated, unsure of what to do but to let her hide there in his arms. She had probably never seen such a horror like this, but I had. I had lived it once before, and many times in my memory since then. The sight of Dowson’s corpse was nothing more than an echo of my family. Of what had happened to them that horrible night. Of the way their bodies looked once the violence had ebbed. I knew death too intimately to be shaken like Alyssa was. As we stood, observing the scene, a man was inv

VALERIEI stepped aside to allow Amelia into the room, surprised and confused by her visit. She hadn’t returned home yet? What had she been doing in the palace all this time?Regardless, she smiled warmly upon me and stepped into the room, a jar of something in her hands. “I thought I would bring you some antiseptic salves. I made them myself. They’re quite useful for treating wounds.”I took the jar from her, grateful for the offer. I did not have any injuries of my own, but I would have to use it to treat Lucia’s wrists. “Thank you, Mistress Amelia.” She did not seem set on turning and leaving then, so I stepped aside and gestured awkwardly. “Please, come in.”Her smile faltered a little and she stepped past me. She took in Xavier’s room—the grand accents on the walls, the shimmering chandelier above, and the heart to the side, which was still faintly ablaze with a small fire. Then she delicately folded herself into a seat on the sofa. “I heard about what had happened from Ralph. I’

XAVIERRalph and I had journeyed to the barracks to question the guards on the matter of Dowson. It was unacceptable to know that someone in our watch had turned a blind eye to such an important subject.Ralph had gathered them all into a line, and he was approaching each one individually. Looking them in the eye and asking, “What do you know Dowson’s death? Where were you when it happened? Did you see anything suspicious?”One by one, they insisted they knew nothing. And one by one, they seemed to be growing more nervous, more agitated by the interrogation.Amidst our questioning, the room erupted in accusations.“Oh, whoever knows something just say it!”“It wasn’t me! I wasn’t stationed at the time.”“Daniel certainly had reason to use the bathroom quite often.”“Shut up, Garett! It wasn’t me, either! I simply had an upset stomach.”Their shouts erupted into a loud raucous, and Ralph brought the room to a sudden halt. There was a way about Ralph that could strike fear into the hear

XAVIERWe moved swiftly, though the ride would be much longer avoiding the main streets of Oreheroad. We needed to stay inconspicuous. We needed to move like shadows among the city. Which, to Ralph, meant cutting through alleyways and creeping through residential districts., weaving our horses past food carts and pedestrians. The house of Duff was located in the Southeastern quarters of Orheroad. And as the city opened before us, I could not help but wonder why he had not attended the festivities. It was, after all, Reuben’s natural inclination to party. But I was not complaining. It was more convenient, being that he was far from the palace. Far from Caeser’s men.We had driven in a simple carriage, so as not to alert him of our presence, and I was quickly growing tired of the bumps and knocks in the road. Though cars were plentiful in the city, the palace did not own any relative to that of a commoner, or even a noble. Ours were distinct. Vehicles of high regard that could only be d

VALERIE That night, I dreamt of a woman with green eyes. At first, I thought I was seeing myself. But there were certain differences in our faces. Things that I could pick apart in detail if I looked at her long enough. She was a few years older, her eyes far lighter. And her belly bulged, large and telling as she ran through the brambles of a thick and endless forest. Yapping came from behind her. A sound that took me back to the night of the raid. I knew that sound better than anyone. It had not left my thoughts in years. The woman stumbled through the thickets. She ran, clutching onto trees with one hand and her belly with the other. She could not move fast with a child in her womb, and as she turned back, a trio of werewolves dashed through the slats in the trees. They were large. The size of horses, at least. And they were close on her tail. Still, she ran. As quickly as her legs would take her. She ran until pain twinged on her face and she felt her legs give. And even aft

VALERIE The next day, Xavier took me to his study. And she was there. I walked in and at the sight of her, it was like all the air was knocked from my lungs. Staring at Ava felt like a dream. It was her. I knew it was her. And she seemed to recognize me as well. If I had been holding anything at the moment, I would have dropped it. But instead I just froze there, staring at her. Wondering if I’d ever actually woken that morning, or if I was still steadily dreaming. And when I realized this was no dream at all, my heart quickened in my chest. “V-Valerie,” Ava mumbled, her eyes wide, her mouth parted. We did nothing but stand there, facing one another for a long while. Then tears hit my eyes. I stumbled to her, my legs numb beneath me, and wrapped her in my arms. We nearly went to the floor together, my knees buckling under me and Ava too weak to hold my weight. I hugged her tightly—too tightly, because Ava let out a groan. I released, feeling the high-risen skin on her back.

VALERIE Xavier led us to the sentry post before the sun had fully risen in the sky. The horizon was a brilliant lavender, the air crisp and chilly. There were no guards around, and carnage spilled upon the grass. Blood, fur, weapons and signs of struggle in the dirt. I supposed there would be a lot of violence from this moment forward. That this would not be the last puddle of blood I saw. I just hoped, with all my heart, that none of it would belong to Xavier. Distantly, Lucas stood beside the cab of a black sedan, patiently staring down the sunrise. We had but a moment to say our goodbyes, and I was afraid to start. The sooner I began, the sooner it would be over with. And I might never see Xavier again. When the time came, when I heard his voice whisper my name, “Valerie.” I did not hesitate. I threw my arms around Xavier and clutched onto him with all the strength in me. I didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to leave him here, but I knew I would only be a liability. Besides, h

XAVIERI watched Valerie’s sleeping face, her cheeks peppered pink from the warmth of the bed. My body was still on fire, long after the crisp of night swept into the old house and flushed out all the heat. The mark on Valerie’s neck glowed, red and angry in the dim light of an impending dawn. One single bite, not deep enough to break flesh, but deep enough to bruise it. Deep enough to leave the impression of every tooth. Beneath it, the soft red petals of kiss-marks peppered down her body, vanishing beneath the blankets. I shouldn’t have given in to my desires; she needed her rest, and I needed my focus. But I did not expect the way my body would react once I was biting down on her elegant neck. And I did not expect the way her body reacted to my bite. How potent her pheromones became once she was marked.I was not strong enough to deny her after that.I had kissed every inch of her until she begged me to take her, and I could not remember much else beyond the sound of her cry in the

VALERIE “What do you mean?” The fear and anger clenched so tightly in my chest, it felt like a rib would break. Stay? He was all I had and now we were being separated? I had just lost Ava. I was going to lose Xavier, too? “You can’t stay! I don’t want to leave you!” Tears pricked at my eyes—tears of rage this time. Not anger, not pain. Rage. Because it was just so unfair. After everything, it was just so unfair to lose them both. “No! I just lost Ava, I won’t lose you too!” Again, he kissed me, and again I could do nothing but kiss him back. It was the feeling of air in your lungs after a long time under water, and I loved breathing Xavier in. I loved the sweet warmth of his kiss, the softness of his lips. But I hated the way it quenched the fire in me. The way I felt…a little less angry. “Lucas will protect you,” he said as we broke apart, gently leaning his forehead against mine. I could hardly breathe. The tears burned like acid on my cheeks. I shook my head, pulling away f

VALERIE I woke in a faint mist. There was nothing around me but white. And in the distance, four shapes were coming closer, breaking through the tiffany clouds. Somehow, I knew I was meant to be with them. I trudged through the fog, my feet taking into a run as the shapes of them began to appear in the mist. My parents. Mathilda. Ava. They smiled, their arms extended, waiting for me to walk right into them. But I could not reach. It seemed no matter how far I ran, I could not get any closer to them. They grew further and further away, and then they disappeared entirely. They disappeared into the fog, like shapes erased from paper. “Wait!” I cried out. “Wait for me!” But they were gone. And I was alone, in that white, empty world. I crumbled to my knees and cried. “I don’t want to be alone. Don’t leave me alone.” Then I felt something with in me. A warmth. You are not alone, that familiar voice said. I ignored her, sobbing into my knees instead. I had been so close to them

VALERIE The room was suddenly electric. The look Caeser had given me did not settle. Rather, it curdled in my stomach like bad food. Suddenly, I was no longer hungry. The music had stopped playing, and the crowd had gone quiet, confused by the confrontation between son and father. But Xavier looked as composed as always. “If you would not mind taking a seat, father,” Xavier began. “I have more details to—“ Suddenly, a sound like thunder rolled through the entrance of the banquet hall. The tables turned their attention to the entrance door, where a guard stumbled inside. Something was terribly wrong with him, by the look of it. His eyes were glazed and distant, his lips turning blue. He stumbled in on weak legs and collapsed to the floor, veins scrawling up the side of his neck. Several guests leapt from their seats in fear. “What is going on?” a woman exclaimed. The man beside her stepped closer, crouching as if preparing to shift. Others joined him, taking a defensive stance am

VALERIE It was late into the evening when the guests began to make their way to the palace in hordes. I had been watching out the window when a gentle rapping came at my door. A guard stepped inside and bowed. “I have been instructed by Princess Alyssa to retrieve you for the banquet. Might you dress in something…a little more appropriate for the occasion?” I felt something light inside of me at the invitation. It wasn’t that I was necessarily excited for the banquet, but it gave me an opportunity to see Alyssa. And Xavier. I had been locked in my chamber for days now, waiting for Ava to recover from her…recent events. But I did not want to leave her be. Especially after what had occurred with the guards. I turned to look at her. She seemed…relatively normal today. Perhaps it wasn’t hurting anyone if I escaped for an hour or two. “Go ahead,” Ava said with a smile. “I’ll be here waiting for you.” I nodded to her and dressed quickly in the finest thing I owned—a gown gifted to m

  • Ravished By The Alphas (Reverse-Harem Paranormal Romance)   Chapter 116 Hell awaited them

XAVIER After my conversation with Lucas, I sat in silence for a long while. I was in an agonizing pull of pressure—one side mulling over the idea of telling Valerie the truth, the other considering a world where I ran away with her. Of course, this couldn’t happen. But it did bring me a moment of ease to imagine. No more chaos. No more responsibility. Just the two of us, running from this face as fast as our legs would take us. But that was a dream. Not the reality that spilled out in front of me. The truth was, I was casting her out of Orheroad, whether she liked it or not. I had no other option. And she would not be happy about this. But she would be okay. And that was enough. Eventually, my silent thinking came to an end when a knock rapped on the door. Before I would rise to answer it, Ralph entered with the injured guard from yesterday. As most wolves do, he had recovered quickly. “Sir,” the guard said, drawing down in a slight, pained bow. I waved a hand to ward off the f

XAVIER I stared at the phone for much too long. The small device—one of only a few left in the entire world—sitting in inanimate silence, and somehow still mocking me. It took all I had to reach for it, and even once I’d done that, I could not bring myself to pick it up. After several beats of hesitation, I lifted it in my hands and dialed the number to Saelmere Castle. It rang once. Twice. Three times. Then he answered. “Well, well, well. If it isn’t the long lost prince. What is it? Did you miss me too terribly?” At first, Lucas sounded joyful—maybe even a little humorous. And then suddenly, his tone dropped. All the smile fell from his voice and he grumbled lowly into the line, “I must say, It is about damned time.” I frowned at the sound of Lucas’s droll, irritable tone. After the security over the city was reinforced, no one had been able to call in or out. I wasn’t sure how many times Lucas had made the attempt, but by the sound of his hard-edged voice, he was angry. Whic

VALERIE The longer I stayed with Ava, the more obvious it became that she wasn’t the same as she used to be. Every time we spoke, she was becoming more of a stranger. Less of Ava. She seemed to have forgotten most of the time we’d spent together in the shop. Vague things came back to her now and then—the day her master purchased her. The view of the market district from the pane glass windows. But not much else. And though she remembered who I was, she didn’t remember Aunt Louise and Aunt Rita. She couldn’t name a single girl from the shop, and she didn’t seem to recall the talks we used to have, either. I didn’t sleep well that night. I dreamed instead…the strangest dreams. I dreamed of wild, vivid forests and the air billowing against my skin. I dreamed of running and running until my feet lost all feeling. I did not know why I dreamed such strange things, but I didn’t mind it either. I could taste the earthy scent of the forest around me. I could feel my heart thundering in my ch
