Chapter 67

 Max’s Point of View

The door to my office slammed shut behind me, the sound reverberating through the silence as I paced back and forth. My chest heaved, anger coiling like a snake ready to strike. The audacity. The nerve of Samuel Graves to waltz back into the company and demand control like he’d earned it. My fists clenched tightly, the rage within me building with each passing second.

The board’s decision echoed in my mind a three-month ultimatum. Three months to prove myself, or risk losing everything I had sacrificed for. My reputation, my position, my legacy it was all hanging by a thread.

My gaze shifted to the vast skyline beyond the glass wall of his office, my thoughts racing as i tried to quell the storm of anger rising within me

The sharp click of the office door opening broke my thoughts. I turned swiftly to see him Samuel Graves, the man who had the audacity to challenge me in my own company. His expression was calm, almost smug, as if he relished the turmoil he had just unleashed.

“What do you want?” I snapped, my voice cold and cutting.

Samuel closed the door behind him with deliberate ease, his every move calculated to provoke. “I came to check on you,” he said smoothly, the hint of mockery in his tone unmistakable. “You seemed... rattled in the meeting. I thought you might need a moment to collect yourself.”

I laughed bitterly, the sound harsh and devoid of humor. “Don’t play games with me, Samuel. You didn’t come here to check on me. You came to gloat.”

He raised an eyebrow, the faintest smirk tugging at his lips. “Gloat? No, Maximilian. I came to offer you a piece of advice. Pride is a dangerous thing. It blinds even the sharpest minds and leads to their downfall. You’re teetering on the edge, nephew. Don’t let it consume you.”

I stepped closer, the distance between us narrowing as I glared at him. “Spare me the lectures. You think you’re some savior, swooping in to save the company from disaster. But you’re nothing more than a parasite, feeding off the chaos you’ve created. You don’t care about the company or the people who depend on it. This is about you and your insatiable hunger for power.”

Samuel expression hardened, the mask slipping for a moment to reveal the man beneath the man who had been waiting for this opportunity for years. “And you think you’re any different? Do you believe your leadership is flawless? That you’ve made no mistakes? The cracks are already showing, Maximilian, and the world can see them.”

“Enough!” I barked, my voice reverberating through the room. “You’ve been waiting for this moment, haven’t you? Waiting for a chance to swoop in and claim what you think is yours. Well, let me make one thing clear you’ll never get it. This company is mine, and I’ll fight tooth and nail to keep it.”

Samuel took a step closer, his calm demeanor now replaced with a cold intensity. “You’re blinded by your arrogance, Maximilian. You think this is about power? About revenge? No. This is about the future of our family’s empire, an empire you’re driving into the ground. If I don’t step in now, there’ll be nothing left to save.”

“Save?” I scoffed, shaking my head. “You’re delusional. This empire was thriving under my leadership until you crawled out of the shadows and started poisoning the board against me. Don’t act like a hero, Samuel. You’re a coward who hides behind manipulation and deceit.”

His jaw tightened, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of something in his eyes anger, perhaps, or maybe frustration. “Coward, am I?” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “Do you know what it takes to build something from nothing? To claw your way up when the odds are stacked against you? You inherited this empire, Maximilian. You didn’t build it. You don’t understand the weight of carrying it, the sacrifices required to keep it alive.”

“And what would you know about sacrifices?” I shot back. “You abandoned this family when it needed you most. You turned your back on everything and everyone. You don’t get to lecture me about sacrifices.”

Samuel's expression darkened, and he stepped even closer, his voice now a quiet growl. “You think you know the whole story, don’t you? You think I left because I was weak, because I didn’t care? You have no idea what I’ve endured, what I’ve done to protect this family what I’ve done to protect you.”

I froze for a moment, his words hitting a nerve I hadn’t anticipated. But I quickly shook it off, refusing to let him gain any ground. “Protect me? Don’t make me laugh. Everything you’ve done has been for yourself. Don’t try to rewrite history, Samuel. You’ve always been in it for your own gain.”

He sighed, his anger momentarily giving way to something colder, sharper. “Believe what you want, Maximilian. But mark my words I’m taking back what’s mine. The board sees it, the investors see it, and soon, even you will see it. This empire belongs to the Graves, and I will reclaim it.”

My fists clenched at my sides, the weight of his words settling over me like a storm cloud. “You won’t take it from me,” I said, my voice steady but filled with unyielding determination. “I don’t care what schemes you’ve concocted or what allies you’ve gathered. I built this company into what it is today, and I’ll be damned if I let you tear it apart.”

Samuel smiled faintly, a cold, calculated smile that sent a chill down my spine. “We’ll see, Maximilian. The clock is ticking. Three months. Make the most of them.”

With that, he turned on his heel and walked out of my office, leaving me standing there, seething with rage and resolve.

I stared after him, my mind racing with thoughts of the battle that lay ahead. He thought he could take everything from me, but he underestimated one thing I wasn’t just fighting for a company. I was fighting for my legacy, my pride, and my family’s name.

Three months. That was all I had. And I was determined to use every second of it to ensure Samuel Graves regretted ever stepping foot back into my life.

I stared at my whiskey glass, then slammed it down so hard I thought it might break. Some of the drink splashed onto my hand, but I didn't care. All I could focus on was Eva sitting in that corner with *him*.The bar was dark except for the weak yellow lights hanging from the ceiling. Through the haze of cigarette smoke, I watched them. She looked beautiful tonight, her black hair falling past her shoulders, her red dress hugging her body just right. But it wasn't her beauty that was killing me. It was how happy she looked with that guy. Even his smile made me want to punch something. He kept putting his hand closer to hers on the table. Every time his fingers moved an inch closer, my jaw clenched tighter. The way she smiled at him, the way she leaned in when he talked it was like someone was twisting a knife in my gut. That

Finally, she stepped closer, her heels clicking against the tiled floor, the sound echoing in the tense office space.“What if I was?” she asked, her voice soft but laced with venom.
