Chapter 43

Sara's Point of View

The morning sun pours through our windows, making bright spots on our living room floor. I'm sitting on the couch with my legs tucked under me, just like I used to do when I was small. Mom's next to me, and her coffee's getting cold on the table. We can't stop watching the TV.

The news guy keeps talking about the fire at the prison, and then he says it - Eva Brown is dead.

"She's really gone," I whisper. I'm playing with my shirt hem, twisting it around and around in my fingers.

Mom smiles, and it's not a nice smile. It reminds me of how our cat looks when it catches something. "Finally," she says, sounding happy, "that pest is out of our lives."

Something inside me feels warm and dark, like a shadow coming alive. I remember all the times people compared us. "Why can't you be more like Eva?" they'd say. "Eva would never do that." Eva with her perfect grades. Eva with her perfect smile. Eva, who everyone loved more than me. Eva, who made me feel small a

Chapter 44MAX POINT OF VIEW The sun is setting outside my study. Its light makes long shadows on my floor. I sit at my desk, tapping my fingers on the wood. The quiet in here feels heavy, like it's hard to breathe. My eyes keep going to her picture in the corner. Eva's picture. No one has touched it since everything happened. She looks so innocent there, with her bright eyes and soft smile. I was such a fool."Look at you," I say. The words come out ugly and bitter. "You're dead, and here I am, stuck cleaning up your mess." My voice bounces off the walls, harsh and angry. When I first heard she died, I felt happy. I know that's wrong, but it's true. Then I got angry because even in death, she got away easy. "You got off too easy, Eva," I say through clenched teeth. "You should have suffered more."I get up and walk to her picture. Those eyes that told so many lies. "You think it's over? You think dying makes everything okay?" My heart pounds hard in my chest. "You ruined everything!

Chapter 45: Eva's Point of ViewThe afternoon sun shimes through the curtains of the big living room, casting warm patches of light on the floor. I sit on the plush sofa beside my grandmother, her hands knitting quietly, the rhythm of the needles soothing. I take a deep breath, feeling the weight of everything that’s happened lately, but for a moment, I feel safe.“Eva, dear,” Grandma says, her voice soft and kind. “You’ve been through so much. You should let yourself rest.” She looks at me with those wise, loving eyes, and I can’t help but smile.“I’m okay, Grandma,” I reply, forcing my voice to sound light. But inside, I’m not sure. “Just a little tired, that’s all.”Grandma puts down her knitting and takes my hands in hers. “You are strong, but even the strongest need help sometimes. It’s okay to lean on family.”Her words make me feel warm inside, like a hug wrapped around my heart. “I know,” I say, squeezing her hands back. “I’m grateful for you. I really am.”We share a comfort

I wanted a fresh start, away from everything that reminded me of my past. The day we got on the plane was full of mixed feelings. I held my grandmother's hand tightly. I felt scared and excited. The plane's engines hummed as we took off, leaving behind the painful parts of my life. Grandma smiled at me, her eyes bright and encouraging..“You’re going to be okay, Eva,” she said, her voice calm. “This is a new beginning for both of us.”I nodded, trying to believe her. “I just want to do right by the kids,” I whispered, lookin

Chapter 47Eva’s Point of ViewIt had been six years since my life changed forever. My babies, who were once tiny miracles, were now lively five-year-olds, full of energy and laughter. As I watched them play in our bright, cheerful living room, my heart swelled with pride. Each of them was unique, not just in looks but in abilities that set them apart from other children. The boys look exactly like Max while Mia was the exact replica of me."Look at me, Mom!" shouted Leo, the eldest, as he balanced on one foot on the arm of the couch. His tousled blond hair bounced with every movement. "I’m a superhero!""Be careful, Leo!" I called out, a mix of worry and amusement filling my voice. He was always trying to show off, and I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of anxiety whenever he attempted his stunts.“Yeah, Mom! Let him be!” chimed in James, my youngest son with his big brown eyes sparkling. He was painting a masterpiece with her crayons on the coffee table, completely absorbed in hid ar

Chapter 48: Sara's Point of ViewI can't sleep again tonight. My head's pounding from all the crying, and the wine isn't helping anymore. The clock on my phone says it's 3:27 AM. Another sleepless night, thinking about Max. Always about Max.The bathroom light feels too bright as I stare at myself in the mirror. God, I look awful. My eyes are all puffy and red, mascara everywhere. There are seven empty wine bottles on the counter now I've been counting them like they're keeping score of my bad decisions. Twenty five bottles for seven days of trying to forget what happened last weekend. But I can't forget. I never can. It's been six years since Eva died. Six years, two months, and fifteen days, to be exact. Yeah, I keep track. Pathetic, right? But that day changed everything. I really thought... I really believed that maybe, finally, Max would see me. Really see me. Not just as his friend, not just as his shoulder to cry on, but as someone who could love him. Someone who already did lo

Chapter 49Eva's Point of ViewI couldn't sleep again. Not that anyone could blame me today was the big day. Standing by the window, I watched the early morning sun peek through our faded curtains, painting the room in soft gold. Six years. It had been six whole years since I left the state to London. Now here I was, getting ready to go back.My hands shook a little as I hugged myself, trying to calm my nerves. The sound of soft breathing made me turn around, and just like that, my fear melted away. There they were my four reasons for living, all sprawled out in their beds.Leo was hanging halfway off his bed like usual, his SpiderMan blanket twisted around his legs. Sam had somehow managed to surround himself with all his stuffed animals, like a tiny guard of furry protectors. James lay perfectly straight, neat even in his sleep, his precious sketchbook clutched to his chest. And little Mia, my baby girl, was curled up in a tiny ball, her wild curls covering her face."Just look at

Chapter 50: Eva's Point of ViewMy hands were shaking a little as we drove up to Grandmother Helena's estate. Even after all these years, the place still took my breath away. The iron gates slowly opened, and I heard the kids gasp from the backseat."Oh my gosh, Mom! Look at how huge it is!" Sam pressed his face against the car window. "It looks like those fancy houses we see in movies!"He wasn't wrong. The mansion was massive, sitting there like something out of a fairytale with its perfect gardens and sparkling fountains. The evening moon made everything look magical, casting silver light across the marble statues."Mama, are those real flowers?" Mia's eyes were wide as she pointed at the rose gardens. "There's so many colors!""Those are all real, baby." I smiled. "Your great-grandmother loves her flowers."We pulled up to the front steps, and my heart did a little flip. There she was Grandmother Helena, standing tall and elegant as ever. Even at seventy-five, she looked like sh

Chapter 51Sara's Point of ViewThe evening sky was turning dark as I waited for Max in his study. My heart beat fast, nerves curling in my stomach, but I pushed them down. Tonight, I’d say what I’d held back for so long. Tonight, I’d make him see that I was ready to be everything for him, if only he’d let me.Finally, the door creaked open, and Max walked in, his face as cold and unreadable as ever. He barely glanced at me, his attention locked on some papers he’d brought in.“Max,” I said, voice soft yet steady. He looked up, clearly caught off guard. “What is it, Sara? I thought we discussed everything earlier.”But I shook my head. “No, Max. We haven’t discussed this,” I replied, stepping closer. I gathered all the courage I could, knowing I couldn’t keep living like this, clinging to some fragile hope that one day, he’d love me. “Max, I… I think it’s time we took the next step. Let’s get married.”The silence that followed was thick and icy, chilling me down to my bones. Max's fa

Chapter 100Maximilian’s Point of ViewThe air in the boardroom felt thick and heavy, pressing down on me like an invisible weight. The tension was almost unbearable, crackling in the silence like a storm waiting to break. I sat at the head of the long oak table, my fingers gripping the armrests of the chair tightly, trying to steady myself. Around the table, familiar faces stared back at me, their expressions a mix of doubt and suspicion. These were people I had worked with for years, individuals who once respected my decisions, trusted my leadership. Now, their eyes held something else judgment.I took a deep breath, but it did little to ease the discomfort in my chest. The room seemed colder than usual, the sharp scent of polished wood mingling with the faint aroma of coffee cups left untouched on the table. The faint hum of the air conditioning was the only sound breaking the silence, and even that felt intrusive.“Mr. Graves,” one of the senior board members, Harold Whitman, bega

I sat behind my desk, staring at the sprawling view of the skyline, but my mind was consumed by the chaos of the morning. The memory of the reporters, their voices like daggers, still clung to me. Their accusations echoed in my mind, each one sharper than the last. My fists tightened against the cool wood of the desk. No matter how absurd their claims were, they had planted a seed of doubt in the public’s mind, tarnishing everything I’d worked to build.A knock on the door snapped me from my thoughts. “Come in,” I barked, my voice harsher than I intended. My secretary, Maria, stepped inside, her usual composed demeanor faltering. She held a tablet in her hands, her expression tense. “Sir, I thought you should see this.”“What now?” I growled, leaning back in my chair as she approached.Maria placed the tablet on my desk, her fingers trembling slightly. “

Chapter 98Max’s Point of ViewThe flash of cameras hit my eyes the moment I stepped out of my car. The usual buzz of morning traffic was drowned out by the chaotic frenzy of reporters swarming outside the company gates. A sea of microphones and questioning voices surged toward me, their questions sharp and relentless.“Mr. Graves, is it true you and Sara conspired to kill your grandfather?” one voice shouted, cutting through the noise.“Do you have any comments on the evidence emerging that implicates you in the murder?” another chimed in.My jaw clenched, my hand tightening on the strap of my briefcase as I fought to keep my expression neutral. The accusations were absurd, yet the weight of their words struck something deep within me—a mix of anger, disbelief, and the faintest twinge of fear.“Mr. Graves! Is the recent media rise linked to you framing eva as the culprit for your grandfather death?” a third voice demanded, forcing me to pause mid-step.I turned sharply, my glare enou

The dim lighting cast a golden hue over the room, reflecting off the crystal decanter on my desk. Beside it sat two half-filled glasses of wine.“Cheers to a small victory,” I said, raising my glass toward Josh, who lounged on the couch across from me.Josh gave a wry grin, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he raised his glass in response. “Small? I’d say this was a significant blow to them.” He took a sip, his gaze fixed on me with a mixture of admiration and curiosity. “You’re playing this game better than I expected, Eva.”I took a slow sip of the rich, crimson wine, letting its warmth spread through me. “It’s not about playing the game, lJosh,” I replied, setting the glass down gently. “It’s about justice. About proving the truth.”Josh arched an eyebrow, leaning forward slightly. “And you think the public turning ag

My mother paced the floor with the ferocity of a caged lioness, her heels clicking against the hardwood with each sharp step. Her face, usually a mask of icy composure, was twisted in fury, her eyes blazing with unrestrained anger.“I have never,” she hissed, pausing mid-step to glare at the space as if her words could strike down an unseen foe, “been humiliated like that in my entire life.”She spun around, facing me. “Do you know what it feels like, Sara? To be reduced to nothing in front of the entire world? To have everything you’ve worked for trampled on because of someone else’s incompetence?”Her voice rose with each word, cutting through the air like a whip. I flinched but kept my gaze steady, though my heart pounded in my chest.“It’s not my fault,” I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper.“Not your fault?” she repeated, her tone dripping with disbeli

Beside me, my mother’s face was a pale mask of fury, her lips pressed into a thin line as her sharp eyes flickered between the screen and Maximilian. He stood by the window, his broad back turned to us, his posture as rigid as the tension in the room. Behind that calm facade was a woman just as shattered as I was.“They’ll be out there,” I murmured, my voice hoarse from a night of restless tears.Mom adjusted her scarf, her movements measured and deliberate. “Let them.
