Chapter 46: Revealed Secrets
Dust and rubble fell as a gunshot broke the strained reunion. Isabella and Xander were rushed by their parents to the rear of their modest home. Their formerly tranquil cabin became chaotic due to the eerie shadows cast by the flickering candle light.
"Go, Isabella! No time! With a roar, her father threw open a trapdoor under an old rug, exposing a narrow, dark tunnel. Xander, who was accustomed to risk, grabbed Isabella's hand and prodded her forward.
Bella, have faith in them. We must relocate! Isabella felt frozen, her legs heavy, but his solid, soothing voice cut through her dread and confusion. She had just been with her parents again, and now she was stuck in a bad dream.
There was another gunfire, closer this time. Their guide, Abiola, was standing by the front door, looking out at the trees with his pistol pulled. With worry in her voice, her mother murmured, "They found us." "They're going to capture us all, so we have to leave now." Isabella paused, caught between the impulse to find out and the need to go away. Mom, Dad, what's going on? Why are they attempting to murder us?Christine Munroe looked up into Isabella's eyes, her face a mixture of resolve and grief. Bella, we created formidable foes. But we did everything for you, I swear.
Isabella was dragged down by Xander as the trapdoor creaked. No additional explanations were needed. The front door exploded open, and Brad Munroe closed the hatch behind him. Heavy footfall and muffled cries resounded above, but as they ran, the noise was muffled by the underground tube.
As they sped into the tunnel, Xander's torch shining on the uneven walls, the air was musty and moist. Isabella had a lot of questions. How had her parents gotten into such a risky situation? Why was everything she valued in their past at risk?
The tunnel went on and on until Isabella could find no way out. At last they came out into a bush on the edge of the village. The moon was obscured by clouds, casting a shadow across the countryside.
Abiola, who had chosen a different path, motioned for stillness while looking around the forest for potential attackers. He said, "A car is waiting a couple of miles down this path." "We must act swiftly."
Isabella looked at her parents, who were both breathing heavily. Her voice was shaking with rage and dread as she asked, "Can you please explain what's going on?" "You gave me the impression that you were dead for twenty years, and now you're shooting me for something you did. I'm worthy of knowing the truth.
With a look of sadness on his face, Brad and Christine exchanged glances. "We know you're upset, Bella," he said in a raspy voice. "However, there are things we did to keep you safe that you weren't supposed to know."
"Keep me safe?" Isabella repeated, disbelieving. "I thought I was alone growing up! I believed you were dead, therefore I had to battle for everything! Christine moved forward, her eyes sparkling with tears. Bella, we were hunted. via those who would have turned you against us. For your sake, we had to vanish.Their comments made Isabella's heart hurt, yet treachery still hurt. "Who are these individuals? Why now? After all these years, why are they still pursuing us?
"It's due to what we discovered," Brad said somberly. "A plot by large corporations to take advantage of Africa's resources." Those who stand in their way are either killed or worse. We made an effort to stop them, but they came after us when they saw we were about to expose them.
Christine gave a nod. "To keep you safe, we had to pretend to be dead. However, they just found out we're still alive. and they won't give up until they complete the task at hand.
Isabella's thoughts were spinning as they walked into the woodland. The odd reports she had come across throughout her studies, the clues of wrongdoing that led nowhere, all made sense. At the heart of it all had been her parents' efforts to reveal the wrongdoing. Their adversaries, however, were resolved to eradicate them now that they had reappeared.
Xander strolled next to her, lost in contemplation. Although he was always aware of the dangers of greed and power, he had not expected to face such vicious opponents. In a wordless promise to keep Isabella safe at all costs, his fingers closed tighter around hers.
At last, they came upon a tarp-covered, dilapidated old SUV. After leading them inside, Abiola turned on the engine and drove quickly through the forest on a dirt road.
Isabella reclined, fatigue threatening to overwhelm her. She muttered, "Where are we going now?"
Abiola said, "To a safe house." It's far from the people who are hunting you, deep in the bush. Your folks have been hiding there.
Isabella's heart was heavy with conflicting feelings as she gazed at her parents. They were together for the time being, but so much was still unknown. That was plenty to sustain her.
The moonlight was obscured by the thick canopy as they drove farther into the bush, leaving them in complete darkness. The only noises were the distant cries of animals and the hum of the motor. Nevertheless, Isabella experienced an odd feeling of hope despite the stress. She was not alone for the first time in years.
Abiola's eyes narrowed as he abruptly slowed the car. "There's a problem," he whispered. "This is where the guards were supposed to meet us."
Reaching for the revolver concealed beneath his jacket, Xander stiffened. "Remain vigilant," he said. "There may be a trap here."
But before they could respond, the area was inundated with dazzling spotlights. They were surrounded by cars, making it impossible for them to flee. With their rifles aimed on the SUV, men in black tactical gear rushed out.
Through a megaphone, a voice said, "Get out with your hands up!" "You're surrounded by us."
Isabella's pulse raced as she saw her parents' terrified expressions. This was the point at which everything would either come together or fall apart. She had to decide whether to fight, run, or give up.
With his eyes burning with resolve, Xander said, "We're not going down without a fight."
However, as Isabella's thoughts raced, she suddenly recalled what her father had spoken to her during their desperate flight. The safe home had a hidden passageway that led to an ancient system of tunnels beneath the ground, as well as a secret room. They could have a chance to get away if they could make it there.
"Follow my lead," she urged Xander in a whisper. "I've got a plan."
Isabella's eyes glowed with renewed determination as the armed men drew closer. She was prepared to do whatever it needed to regain her life, and the battle was far from done.
Xander stiffened and grabbed Isabella's hand.
The ballroom glowed magnificently, the chandeliers throwing golden light over marble flooring and gorgeously clad VIPs. Conversations hummed like bees, with the occasional clink of champagne glasses. Isabella Monroe took a slow, measured breath, her gaze sweeping across the room. She didn't belong here anymore, but no one knew. Her black silk gown clung to her like a second skin, the type of clothing that drew attention while leaving much to the imagination. It was deliberate. Every aspect, from her outfit to her diamond earrings, was part of a meticulously planned illusion. Tonight, she was not the orphaned daughter of a bankrupt billionaire. Tonight, she embodied power. She surveyed the room, looking for the one man who mattered.Xander Blackwood. Even his name was enough to start a fire in her chest. The son of the man who had stolen everything from her. She would now annihilate this man."Miss Monroe, you look stunning tonight."Isabella recognised Gerald Palmer, a top executive a
Against the skyline, the Blackwood Corporation towered like a shining steel and glass stronghold. Xander Blackwood's stronghold on the city was evident from the street below, where it appeared unbreakable. Isabella saw the building as the stronghold she would enter, but to most, it represented his accomplishment. She would take him down from within its confines. With a fleeting glimpse of herself reflected in the glass, Isabella stood in front of the enormous revolving doors. She smoothed down the lapels of her blazer and adjusted it before entering. With the gentle buzz of activity in the background, the refreshing lobby air hit her like a wave. She felt as though she was travelling over a chessboard with each step she made in the direction of the lift. She would take a serious step today. She was having a negotiation with a top executive at Xander, one that would, if it went well, integrate her into the organisation. Once inside, she would work it out from the inside out.Her though
A world different from the chilly, lavish hallways of Blackwood Corporation was Isabella's flat. It was a sleek, uncomplicated room with a minimalist décor and a long, panoramic view of the city, hidden away on a quiet street. This was how she liked it. Less personal attachments are preferable. Like her, everything in this place was planned and useful. She lowered herself onto the couch, letting go of her heels and feeling her body relax. It had gone better than she had anticipated for the meeting at Blackwood. She had established herself solidly in their world and laid the foundation. Still, she couldn't shake the unanticipated presence of Xander Blackwood. He had been observing her all along, his eyes calculating and razor sharp, like a predator sizing up its prey. It was disconcerting. She had anticipated interacting with his lieutenants and avoiding him as much as possible. However, it appeared that the rules had altered. Things got more tricky because Xander was more involved tha
Isabella positioned herself in front of her bedroom's full-length mirror, her gown's smooth, silky fabric flowing down her body like liquid midnight. She fiddled with the neckline, her fingers grazing the fine embroidery at the corners. This wasn't just any old dress. It was armour, carefully selected to leave a lasting impression, to disappear into the environment she was going to enter, to stand out just enough to let everyone know she was a formidable opponent.Though Isabella had anticipated this moment, the invitation had only arrived a day and a half ago. Someone like her wouldn't be allowed to go unnoticed by Xander Blackwood. He was interested in getting a close-up look at her, testing her, and maybe even trying to figure out any secrets he suspected she was hiding. That was not something she could let happen. The annual gala served as a showcase for the corporation's strength and influence, and it was a Blackwood tradition. It would be attended by everyone who was anybody. Th
Warm light filled Isabella's penthouse as morning sunshine filtered through the curtains. With a cup of coffee in hand, she sat by the bay window thinking back on the gala the night before. It seemed like the event went nicely. Xander Blackwood was present as Isabella maintained her ground while mingling with the wealthy and influential elite. Still, she felt uneasy about their indisputable bond. Xander was passionate and mysterious, unlike anyone she had ever met. He could get beyond her barriers in a way that others could not, therefore his influence carried a danger. Her thoughts were interrupted as her phone buzzed on the table. When she saw his name, Xander Blackwood, she momentarily froze. She reluctantly clicked on the message. Xander: Today's lunch. Only us. The location is your choice. I'm going to wait. She gave him a stern look, which was typical of Xander. Still, there was something fascinating about his candour. "Just the two of us." This was no ordinary busines
The sound of the city buzzed around Isabella as she sat in her penthouse, staring out at the skyline. The lunch with Xander had left her more unsettled than ever. A marriage contract? It was absurd. And yet, the offer lingered in her mind like a tempting whisper, coaxing her to consider what could be gained—and what might be lost.Isabella had always been methodical, precise in her plans. But Xander had thrown her off balance, introducing an element she hadn’t accounted for: him. There was something about his proposition that went beyond business. It was as though he saw her not just as a rival but as an equal, someone worthy of standing by his side in a world where few dared to challenge him.She clenched her jaw, her mind racing as she weighed the possibilities. A marriage contract could give her access to Xander’s world, to his power, his resources. It would bring her closer to everything she needed to achieve her ultimate goal: revenge. But it could also make her vulnerable, expos
Isabella stood at her apartment window, the city lights a blur as she read through the contract for the third time. Each word on the page seemed heavier, and each clause was more binding. This wasn’t just a business deal but a merger of lives. Every decision, every move she made, now revolved around one choice: signing this contract with Xander Blackwood. It was simple legally but complex in every other sense. The terms were clear—a marriage meant to stabilize their respective empires, a calculated union to ward off their rivals. Yet she knew Xander’s motives went deeper than that. He wasn’t just after a business arrangement; he wanted control. And the one thing Isabella despised was being controlled. Her phone buzzed, his name lighting up the screen. Without hesitating, she answered.“Isabella,” his voice, cool and steady, filled her ear. “Have you decided?”She took a deep breath, gripping the document. “Yes, I have.”“And?”“I’ll do it. But there are conditions.”A pause, then a lo
As Isabella exited the limousine with her arm wrapped in Xander's, the night was filled with camera flashes and curious whispers. The crowd's shout and the paparazzi's dazzling lights welcomed them, anxious to document every moment of the new power couple's first public appearance. With his palm lightly pressing on her lower back, Xander muttered, "Smile." "We are the centre of attention tonight."With a beautiful smile that had been on countless magazine covers in her previous life, Isabella raised her chin. However, the stakes were bigger this time. The city's elite circles were already hearing the rumours that followed their abrupt marriage: why had they been married so soon? What did they have to conceal?Isabella felt as though a hundred eyes were watching them as they made their way to the enormous ballroom's entrance, each one attempting to solve the riddle of their union. Even though she had planned for this, she couldn't help but feel a peculiar mixture of excitement and appr
