Isabella stood by the window, gripping the phone more tightly than she had the previous evening as the morning light came through her blinds. She kept thinking about Xander's warning. There had been genuine concern in his voice, and his words had been more than a threat. More than anything the Alliance had done to date, it shook her.
She couldn't stop now, though.
Selena was already setting stuff downstairs. The damaging files were only a day away from being made public. When the news broke, the lawyers they had contacted guaranteed complete security, and journalists from a number of reliable publications lined up.
Isabella came down the stairs with a knowing expression in her eyes, and Selena looked up. "Didn't you hear from him?"
Isabella's throat was dry as she nodded. Last night, Xander gave a call. He cautioned me. instructed me to retreat.
Selena squinted her eyes. "So he's also trying to frighten you."
Isabella mumbled, "Maybe," as she looked down at the table with the evidence folder on it. However, it sounded more than just a threat. He sounded anxious.
Selena crossed her arms and reclined in her chair. Whether you're worried or not, Xander is too involved in this disaster. He is untrustworthy. People like him always select their own skin in the end, and he is playing both sides.
Isabella put her fingers to her temples and sighed. "I am aware of that. However... I simply have no idea what will happen next. One thing he is correct about is that the Alliance will not remain motionless while we expose this.
Selena's resolve was greater than ever, and her voice was firm. "For this reason, we must move quickly. Once this narrative gets out, they won't be able to stop it.
Though suspicion gnawed at the corners of Isabella's thoughts, she wanted to believe her. The Alliance was more powerful than anyone realised, and the battle was only getting started when they were exposed.
The mood remained strained for the remainder of the day. As Isabella and Selena finished their last preparations, every minute seemed to drag on forever. To make sure that nothing could be ignored, they kept backup files in several places and had reliable contacts on call. However, Isabella couldn't get rid of the feeling that something was going to go horribly wrong as the hours passed.
The first indication of problems came in the late afternoon. An incoming message from an unidentified number buzzed through Isabella's phone.
We're watching, even when you believe you're protected. Don't claim that we didn't alert you.
She felt her tummy tighten. Selena looked at the message with gloomy acceptance as she showed it to her. They are merely attempting to frighten us. They are becoming desperate.
Isabella gave a nod, but her thoughts were racing. What if it wasn't merely a danger? What if they were actually one step ahead of the Alliance?
A knock on the door cut her thoughts short. The two women froze, looking at each other suspiciously.
Selena signalled to Isabella to remain back and groped for the revolver she had stashed under the couch. "Leave this to me."
With caution, she opened the door, but a familiar face emerged on the other side in place of the enemy they feared.
Michael was the one.
With an enigmatic expression, Michael stood in the doorway. After the altercation that made Isabella doubt his loyalty, he had been out of their lives for weeks. And now here he was, a phantom of the past, standing in front of them."Why are you in this place?" Selena enquired in a suspiciously piercing voice.
With his eyes fixed on Isabella, Michael lifted his hands in submission. "I'm not here to stir things up. I'm available to assist.
Isabella took a step forward, frowning. "Aid? Why now?
With a groan, Michael combed through his hair. "Because I was wrong." My involvement with the Alliance was a mistake. I'm not like them, though. As much as you want to stop them, so do I.
With her finger still poised above the trigger, Selena sneered. "How can we trust you?"
Michael glanced to Isabella, and his eyes softened. "Because I owe her it." I had to tell her the truth.
Isabella paused as she recalled the night of the gala, when everything had gone completely wrong. Even though Michael had participated in a lot of wrongdoing, there was now a glimmer of regret in his eyes.
"What truth?" she questioned softly.
With a low, eager voice, Michael entered. "The Alliance is aware of your plans. They have already set up a trap, and they will ruin everything if you follow through. They will blame you for everything.
Selena squinted her eyes. "How are you aware of that?"
Michael paused. Since Xander informed me. Isabella, he's trying to keep you safe, but he can't do it by himself. They will frame you for the crimes and corruption if you go public with this without a plan. They will bury you.
Selena gave a sour laugh. Do you honestly believe that we'll fall for it? They encourage us to doubt ourselves and put off our plans, and this is exactly what they want. We're not going to back down.Isabella wasn't so sure, though. The threat from Michael sounded too real. The Alliance possessed the means to eliminate everyone who stood in their path, and they had been untouchable for years. Did she just step into their trap?
"Please, Isabella," Michael begged in a frantic tone. "This cannot be carried out as you had intended. We require an alternative approach.
Isabella glanced at Selena, who gave a firm shake of her head. "He is telling lies. We follow the plan. We have the proof; once we reveal them, they are powerless to harm us.
But Isabella was plagued by doubt. But what if Michael was being honest? What if Xander was genuinely attempting to keep her safe? And what if she was going to ruin everything she had battled for by racing forward?
Isabella found herself alone with Michael a few hours after Selena had gone to see how one of their last connections was doing. The history they shared was as heavy as the tension between them.Michael whispered softly as he stood at the window, looking away, "I know you don't trust me." "But I'm not against you."
Isabella's voice was harsh as she crossed her arms. "You were employed by them. You assisted them in hiding the deaths of my parents. How am I supposed to trust you?
Pain darkened Michael's eyes. "Back then, I had no idea what they were capable of. It was too late by the time I realised. However, I'm working to put things right.
Isabella gazed at him, caught between wanting to believe him and worrying that it would be her last mistake.
She whispered, "Why should I give you another chance?"
Michael's voice was rough as he turned to face her. "Because Isabella, I adore you." And I'll do everything in my power to protect you.
For the first time, Isabella noticed the vulnerability in his eyes as his confession lingered between them. He was more than a piece in the Alliance's scheme. He was a man who had made bad decisions but was frantically attempting to turn things around.
Isabella inhaled deeply as the decision's weight weighed heavily on her. At this point, she had to choose between two options: one would take her into certain danger, while the other would lead to an uncertain alliance with a guy she wasn't sure she could trust.
In any case, there was not much time left.
As Isabella took in Michael's words, her heart raced. With the weight of prior betrayals and the urgency of the present, the room felt too small and too tense. She hadn't anticipated Michael confessing his love, but she didn't have time to worry over feelings at this point. Every choice felt like a step towards either salvation or doom as the clock ticked away. She turned her back on him and gazed into the encroaching dusk outside the window. "What is your strategy, even if I do trust you? You stated that we require an alternative approach, but what do you propose? How can we defeat them without endangering ourselves? Michael's voice was steady but urgent as he approached but maintained his distance. "I've been operating internally. I've observed how they function and their areas of weakness. They can be exposed, but it can't be by a direct attack. They will launch a retaliation if you expose those files now, leaving you helpless. First, we must cut off important Alliance members' su
They became separated by Xander's quiet. As Isabella waited for his answer, she could feel the tension building and her heart pounding. Although she had always been suspicious of Xander's tendency to keep things to himself, she now needed him badly, and his choice would determine everything. At last, Xander's tight voice broke the silence. The one thing that has kept me alive is what you want me to betray. You're asking me to ruin all of my hard work."Isabella steadily maintained eye contact. "I want you to act morally." Horrible things have been done by the Alliance. You are aware of their potential. This is about all the lives they have destroyed, not just about us.She thought for a second that Xander may go as he tightened his jaw. He turned away instead, his hands clenched. "Are you sure they'll let you live? They have eyes everywhere, even if we take them down. They will pursue you."I don’t care," was her stern response. "I've stopped running. I would rather die fighting if I
Footsteps grew louder as they reverberated along the little corridor. While Xander wrote frantically in an attempt to finish the transfer before they were caught, Isabella's heart raced as she and Michael exchanged nervous looks. Michael gripped the door handle tightly and murmured, "We have to move." With a tense yet focused tone, Xander answered, "Just a few more seconds." Isabella's thoughts were racing, trying to find a way out. They could be captured if they stayed, but they were too close to give up the task. As she looked at the screens, her breath caught—there was just one confirmation and one number left. The door squeaked open, and a guard entered abruptly. He went for the radio on his belt as his eyes widened in shock. Isabella moved forward without thinking, snatching the guard's arm and bending it behind him. He moaned in agony as the radio clattered on the ground. Before he could sound the alarm, Michael hurried over to assist her in calming him down. "Xander, go!"
There was a heavy hush in the room as Selena's door closed behind her. Isabella felt a mixture of frustration and shame as she gazed at the place where her best friend had just been.Michael's cool voice disturbed the quiet. "She will return."Isabella dropped into a chair and shook her head. "This time, I don't think she will."Xander folded his arms, his normally composed demeanour beginning to waver. "This is not something we have time for. We can't expect the Alliance to wait. We must maintain our focus."Attentional?" Isabella fired back. "Xander, our squad is disintegrating. You want to discuss emphasis because Selena just left?Xander's face became stern. When the Alliance comes for us, do you think they will be concerned about our issues? They won't allow us to reassemble.Michael held up his hands in a soothing motion. "Everyone, take a deep breath. We cannot afford to be disloyal to one another.Isabella tried to relax by running her fingers through her hair. Since Selena ha
Isabella and Xander exited a heated board meeting as the sun was setting over the Blackwood estate, casting golden light over the gardens. They were silent for a long time, and Xander could see Isabella was upset. His phone buzzed before he could ask the question."Who is it?" Isabella muttered.Xander looked at his computer screen. They had hired an investigator weeks prior to investigate Alexander Blackwood, his estranged father, and it was an encrypted message from him. "Urgent," the note stated. Evidence was gathered. You must view this right away.Xander escorted Isabella inside his study and shut the massive oak door behind them without a word. The fragrance of mahogany and old leather filled the dimly lighted room. His phone displayed a single image and a mysterious audio file as he swiftly linked it to the big screen. Isabella gasped as the image loaded. It was a grainy picture of two people standing outside a tiny, brightly illuminated house. Although the pair appeared elderl
Chapter 46: Revealed SecretsDust and rubble fell as a gunshot broke the strained reunion. Isabella and Xander were rushed by their parents to the rear of their modest home. Their formerly tranquil cabin became chaotic due to the eerie shadows cast by the flickering candle light."Go, Isabella! No time! With a roar, her father threw open a trapdoor under an old rug, exposing a narrow, dark tunnel. Xander, who was accustomed to risk, grabbed Isabella's hand and prodded her forward.Bella, have faith in them. We must relocate! Isabella felt frozen, her legs heavy, but his solid, soothing voice cut through her dread and confusion. She had just been with her parents again, and now she was stuck in a bad dream. There was another gunfire, closer this time. Their guide, Abiola, was standing by the front door, looking out at the trees with his pistol pulled. With worry in her voice, her mother murmured, "They found us." "They're going to capture us all, so we have to leave now."Isabella paus
The ballroom glowed magnificently, the chandeliers throwing golden light over marble flooring and gorgeously clad VIPs. Conversations hummed like bees, with the occasional clink of champagne glasses. Isabella Monroe took a slow, measured breath, her gaze sweeping across the room. She didn't belong here anymore, but no one knew. Her black silk gown clung to her like a second skin, the type of clothing that drew attention while leaving much to the imagination. It was deliberate. Every aspect, from her outfit to her diamond earrings, was part of a meticulously planned illusion. Tonight, she was not the orphaned daughter of a bankrupt billionaire. Tonight, she embodied power. She surveyed the room, looking for the one man who mattered.Xander Blackwood. Even his name was enough to start a fire in her chest. The son of the man who had stolen everything from her. She would now annihilate this man."Miss Monroe, you look stunning tonight."Isabella recognised Gerald Palmer, a top executive a
Against the skyline, the Blackwood Corporation towered like a shining steel and glass stronghold. Xander Blackwood's stronghold on the city was evident from the street below, where it appeared unbreakable. Isabella saw the building as the stronghold she would enter, but to most, it represented his accomplishment. She would take him down from within its confines. With a fleeting glimpse of herself reflected in the glass, Isabella stood in front of the enormous revolving doors. She smoothed down the lapels of her blazer and adjusted it before entering. With the gentle buzz of activity in the background, the refreshing lobby air hit her like a wave. She felt as though she was travelling over a chessboard with each step she made in the direction of the lift. She would take a serious step today. She was having a negotiation with a top executive at Xander, one that would, if it went well, integrate her into the organisation. Once inside, she would work it out from the inside out.Her though
