The realisation made Xander's heart race. They had lost the game. He scanned the magnificent ballroom for any indication of treachery. Though there was no concrete proof, his gut told him something was off. Still.
With his thoughts racing, Xander muttered to himself, "Natalie."
He turned to look at Natalie, who was standing across the room staring at Alexander. Xander couldn't get rid of the impression that she knew more than she admitted, even though her face was inscrutable.
He whispered, "Isabella, we have to move," and drew her nearer.
Her eyes flashed with anxiety as she said, "What's going on?"
Looking around the room for Marcus, he answered, "I believe we've been set up." "We must leave this place before things go wrong."
However, a huge crash reverberated throughout the ballroom before they could take any action. The audience let out a terrified gasp when the elaborate chandeliers above them trembled.
The room was suddenly filled with ominous shadows as the lights lowered. Alexander rose from his chair in the middle of the ballroom and spoke loudly above the commotion.
With glints of venom in his eyes, Alexander murmured smoothly, "Ladies and gentlemen, please remain calm." "I have a small surprise in store for everyone."
When he waved his hand, a number of armed men came out of the darkness, encircling the exits and caulking them shut. When the guests realised they were trapped, panic broke out.
Xander felt a sinking heart. Alexander had set them up for failure.
The Conflict
Like poison, Alexander's voice echoed around the ballroom. "You all believed you could defeat me? Xander, you underestimated me. A menacing grin curled on Xander's lips as his eyes met his across the room.Xander's hands clenched as his mind searched for a way out. He needed to think quickly. They couldn't simply let Alexander get away, but there were too many innocent people in the room to risk a firefight.
Isabella's hold on his arm became more firm. Her eyes were wide with terror as she muttered, "What do we do?"
Despite his doubts, Xander answered, "We stick to the plan." "However, we must track down Marcus and determine whether Natalie cheated on us."
The commotion in the room was silenced when a gunshot rang out just as they were ready to move. The sound's origin caught everyone's attention: Natalie was standing there brandishing a gun, aiming it straight at Alexander.
Natalie stated, "I didn't betray you," in a calm and icy tone. "However, I'm done following Alexander's guidelines."
Xander's gaze expanded. Although she didn't work for Alexander, Natalie had other plans. She always intended to defeat him, but only if she got her way.
The Reversal of the Tables
"Natalie!" Alexander's face lit up with rage as he spat. "What are you doing, in your opinion?""I'm going to end this," she said, her eyes cold. "Too many lives have been ruined and exploited by you. Alexander, it's over.
Xander noticed a flash of terror in Alexander's eyes for the first time. For years, Natalie had been his most reliable ally; now, she was the only one capable of defeating him.
Alexander, however, was far from vanquished. He gestured to his men with his uplifted hand. Natalie, do you really think you can stop me with a gun? One thing you're overlooking is that I own this city.
A number of Alexander's armed guards suddenly charged towards Natalie. She moved quickly, though. She hit two of them with her gun before ducking behind a pillar for protection. Screams and gunfire filled the ballroom as it burst into anarchy once more.
With their hearts racing, Xander and Isabella hid behind a table. They had to take quick action before things became even worse.
Xander commanded, "Isabella, go to Marcus and get the evidence." "I'll take care of Alexander."
Isabella nodded without hesitation and moved through the mob, staying low to be out of the line of fire.
Alexander stood calmly in the middle of the turmoil while Xander moved towards the stage. Although he had misjudged Natalie's treachery, he wasn't done yet.
The Last Gambit
Alexander's eyes furrowed as Xander got closer. "Xander, this is the moment I've been waiting for. Are you certain that you will prevail?"You're finished, Alexander," Xander said steadily. "The proof is available. You have no more place to hide.
Alexander's laugh was hollow and icy. "Xander, you're naive. Evidence is not at issue here. It has to do with power. And it has always been more abundant in me than in you.
When Xander realised Alexander wasn't merely discussing physical strength, his heartbeat sped. There was more to his strategy than the evidence they had collected. However, what?
Alexander took a little, black gadget out of his pocket before Xander could respond. The room was filled with a low hum as he clicked a button. With their weapons lowered as though under the influence of an invisible force, the armed guards ceased fire.
Alexander grinned smugly and declared, "I am in charge of everything." "Even those you believe to be loyal to you."
Xander's thoughts whirled. Alexander had been plotting this turn all along. He possessed some sort of power, something that might have influenced other people in the room in addition to his guards.
The ballroom's doors suddenly flew open, letting more of Alexander's soldiers pour in. However, they surrounded Xander, blocking his escape route, rather than pointing their weapons towards the throng.
Alexander grinned broadly. "Xander, you ought to have kept out of my way."
The Unexpected Deliverer
A loud blast and a harsh hiss reverberated through the ballroom just when everything appeared to be lost. A man appeared in the midst of the confusion as smoke filled the air. Marcus held the encrypted gadget with all the evidence on it."Enough is enough," Marcus snarled in a furious tone. "Alexander, you're not getting away with this."
Marcus quickly pushed a button on the gadget, causing a video feed to come to life on the enormous displays in the ballroom. It was evidence of Alexander's crimes—damaging video that they had found.
As the pictures of Alexander's extensive participation in organised crime, corruption, and murder played, the audience screamed. Before his eyes, his kingdom was collapsing.
Alexander's angry face contorted. "You believe that this will deter me?!" he yelled, his voice fragmenting in rage.
Marcus, however, did not give up. "It's finished."
Alexander understood he had lost at that moment. He was losing the power he had held onto for so long. There was nothing left for him to conceal now that the truth was known.
A King's Decline
Alexander made one last frantic attempt to escape as the ballroom fell into mayhem. However, Xander was quicker. When the authorities eventually arrived, he pinned Alexander down after knocking him to the ground with a quick blow.Natalie's expression was unreadable as she saw Alexander being carried away in handcuffs.
Xander whispered to her, "You did it."
Natalie's eyes were intense as she gazed at him. "Everyone did."
The battle's wounds would not go away, but the horror was finished. It marked the conclusion of one trip and the start of another for Xander and Isabella, one in which they would at last be free of Alexander's shadow.
However, the battle was far from over for Natalie.
Even if Alexander's empire was in shambles and the courtroom battle was still imminent, there was still work to be done. The collapse of one of the city's most influential men sparked an unrelenting media frenzy. Though rumours circulated about his secrets being revealed and his influence eroding, Xander, Isabella, and Natalie knew the narrative was far from ended.A chilly wind blew through the scene as Alexander was led to the waiting police waggon. Xander was relieved yet fatigued as he stood next to Isabella, his arm wrapped around her. From the corner of his eye, however, he saw Natalie leaving—quietly, as though vanishing into the darkness."Natalie!" As he jogged after her, Xander cried out.She didn't turn, but she stopped. With a flat, worn-out voice, she added, "You don't need to thank me." "I never wanted to save anyone but myself."Standing a few steps behind her, Xander scowled. "You saved us nonetheless."Her eyes were colder than he remembered when she finally turned to
As the flames blazed in front of him, Xander sat by the fireplace, his thoughts racing. His body and soul were permanently scarred by the remains of their recent conflicts. Isabella had dozed out, her features softened by the firelight as she cuddled up on the couch across from him. His mind cleared for a minute as he observed her serene demeanour. However, the impending storm could not be avoided. The scenario had gotten increasingly hazardous the further they had penetrated Alexander's criminal organisation. More levels of treachery and dishonesty were revealed every day. Their next course of action was still uncertain, as if they were pursuing shadows on an unending battlefield.Xander was aware that the last encounter with Alexander was imminent. He was more uneasy about the mounting doubt that was invading his thoughts than he was about the face-off that was about to happen.Slowly emerging from her slumber, Isabella's eyes flitted open and locked with Xander's. She sat up and pu
The room was suffocatingly quiet. Isabella stood still, her eyes fixed on the screen as she grasped the magnitude of her discovery. The "Alliance" was not merely a conspiracy; it was a worldwide network that had penetrated some of the most powerful organizations in the world.Xander had not told her about this. The weight of treachery was weighing down on her, and her heart was pounding. Unaware of the actual threats they faced, how could he allow her to fight in the dark? There was dread in addition to rage. What else was Xander concealing from her if he could conceal this? Was she able to trust him any more? She heard footsteps just as she was about to leave the workplace by reaching for the door. Xander. The door creaked softly as he stepped into the room. Though his eyes were instantly drawn to the open laptop, he replied in a casual tone, "Couldn't sleep either?" A moment later, his face changed."What are you doing?" His physique was stiff, his voice fierce.Isabella stood up st
The weight of all Selena had disclosed was like an anchor crushing down on Isabella as she sat in the silence of her apartment. Her thoughts immediately returned to the first time she had seen Xander. Had there been clues, times when she ought to have asked him questions? Had that trust been misplaced, all the times he'd begged her to trust him? With Xander's number highlighted on the screen, she glanced down at her phone. She might face him and demand the truth with only one press. But she hesitated at the concept. What if Selena had been correct? What if she was in danger if she confronted him?A sudden knock at the door startled her from her thoughts. Her heart racing, she quickly went to the peephole to see who was there. On the opposite side, Xander stood with a worried expression on his face. His voice was firm as he said, "Isabella, we need to talk," but she could hear the desperation in it.She inhaled deeply before opening the door and looking into his eyes. "I think we do."
Isabella stood by herself in the darkened room, the burden of the disclosures bearing down on her chest. The silence after Xander's departure sounded deafening. The world she believed to be her own was collapsing beneath her feet, and it wasn't just Xander who betrayed her. She had been living in the shadow of lies for years, and her parents had been killed because they were too near to the truth. However, the fog had now dissipated. The way forward was obvious: with or without Xander, she would destroy the Alliance. Nothing else was an option for her.A few of days later, Isabella was seated in a quiet café outside the city. Selena, the lady who had given her a lifeline but also rocked her world with the truth, sat across from her. As the one person Isabella could trust, Selena had played a crucial role in her parents' investigation years prior.Selena examined the room and murmured, "We have to move carefully," in a quiet voice. "The Alliance is watching everything. They'll realise
Isabella realised the seriousness of her choice as she saw the shaky invader get up and run from her flat. The Alliance knew she was officially in too deep to turn back now. The same way they had come for her parents, they would come for her.But she was prepared this time. She and Selena met early the following morning in a secluded area of the city where they wouldn't be overheard. They were on adrenaline, not sleeping, and constantly watching their backs, so the normal small conversation had been wiped out by the urgency of their position.Isabella sat into the booth opposite from Selena and stated, "They sent someone to my flat last night," in a steely voice.Selena's eyes grew gloomy. "Did they hurt you?"Isabella gave a headshake. "No. All they wanted to do was frighten me. However, it isn't functioning.Selena nodded gravely at her. "All right. Their weapon is fear, but if you don't allow it to rule you, they can't use it against you.Isabella produced the folder containing the
The ballroom glowed magnificently, the chandeliers throwing golden light over marble flooring and gorgeously clad VIPs. Conversations hummed like bees, with the occasional clink of champagne glasses. Isabella Monroe took a slow, measured breath, her gaze sweeping across the room. She didn't belong here anymore, but no one knew. Her black silk gown clung to her like a second skin, the type of clothing that drew attention while leaving much to the imagination. It was deliberate. Every aspect, from her outfit to her diamond earrings, was part of a meticulously planned illusion. Tonight, she was not the orphaned daughter of a bankrupt billionaire. Tonight, she embodied power. She surveyed the room, looking for the one man who mattered.Xander Blackwood. Even his name was enough to start a fire in her chest. The son of the man who had stolen everything from her. She would now annihilate this man."Miss Monroe, you look stunning tonight."Isabella recognised Gerald Palmer, a top executive a
Against the skyline, the Blackwood Corporation towered like a shining steel and glass stronghold. Xander Blackwood's stronghold on the city was evident from the street below, where it appeared unbreakable. Isabella saw the building as the stronghold she would enter, but to most, it represented his accomplishment. She would take him down from within its confines. With a fleeting glimpse of herself reflected in the glass, Isabella stood in front of the enormous revolving doors. She smoothed down the lapels of her blazer and adjusted it before entering. With the gentle buzz of activity in the background, the refreshing lobby air hit her like a wave. She felt as though she was travelling over a chessboard with each step she made in the direction of the lift. She would take a serious step today. She was having a negotiation with a top executive at Xander, one that would, if it went well, integrate her into the organisation. Once inside, she would work it out from the inside out.Her though
