Three Years Ago
My father's voice jolted me awake. "Smile, darling. You look like a corpse," he whispered with a touch of irritation. I managed a forced grin, hoping to appear joyful at the Full Moon celebration. As the Beta's daughter, attendance was obligatory, but after enduring eighteen years of the same festivities, it had grown painfully monotonous.
I observed the dance, music, and merriment unfold with a sense of detachment. Lucas, the current Alpha, sat beside his Luna, Lyra.
He was handsome, they said, but I never found him attractive. I didn't have a particular spec. I was content to let fate decide my mate. I have seen members of our pack live in peace with their mates even without falling for them. I wanted more than that, I wanted a strong connection with my mate, I wanted to crave him as much as he would crave me.
Looking up at the full moon, I silently prayed, "When will I meet him, moon goddess? Please, let him be handsome, kind and very strong." But the moon offered no reply.
My father's glare snapped me out of my thoughts. "Falling asleep during the ceremony, Audrey?"
I blushed and mumbled, "I'm not sleeping dad. I need some fresh air."
Without waiting for my father's approval, I stood up and hastily left the celebration. Shaking my hair free from the ponytail I had packed, I ventured into the woods behind our pack house. To many, it might have appeared creepy, but to me, it was a safe haven, especially under the full moon.
I knew I shouldn't worry so much about finding my mate, especially since I had only shifted a few months ago. But the worry nagged at me. What if I ended up like those she-wolves in their thirties who never found their mates? What if I never had one? Would I grow old and lonely without a mate?
Suddenly, my wolf, Silver, became restless, scraping at the surface of my consciousness. "Run," she urged.
I glanced around, confusion in my eyes. "Where am I running to?" I asked in confusion.
"Run," Silver repeated, the urgency in her voice driving me to take off. A surge of adrenaline raced through me as I sprinted through the forest, my feet pounding on the ground, and the crunch of twigs and leaves beneath echoed in my ears.
Silver's agitation nearly brought laughter, fueling my exhilaration as I ascended the trees and leapt from one to the next. When my wolf finally calmed, I eased my pace, leaning against a tree with my chest heaving, catching my breath.
A short distance away, nearly half a mile, I spotted a river. I immediately ran towards the water hoping to wash my face. As I got closer, a figure emerged from the water, a male, and he was completely naked.
Gasping, I froze in place, stunned at the naked body before me, silently cursing my wolf for bringing me here. The man had a strong, muscular body, illuminated by the moonlight, giving him an aura of darkness and mystery. My gaze drifted downward, captivated by his form.
I had lived a sheltered life, thanks to my father's watchful eye, and had never been so close to a man's naked body. It wasn't an entirely unpleasant experience.
"Mate," Silver said. I was shocked. I could feel her leaping. Maybe she had sensed our mate. That's why she asked me to run.
"Stay put," his voice sliced through the stillness of the night, and I gasped, my heart racing; I was caught. Ready to bolt, he added, "Don't move."
Approaching me, I stammered, "This was an honest mistake."
"Of course," he responded, a sarcastic smile dancing on his lips. "And you didn't mean to... See me naked?"
My face flushed, and I struggled for words. "I'm sorry," I muttered.
"So polite," he murmured, his fingers delicately grazing my skin. His touch, surprisingly gentle, stirred my wolf as his thumb brushed my lower lip, and I shivered. My eyes closed as his lips met mine, a slow and then more insistent kiss that parted my lips, his tongue brushing against mine. The night air echoed with my moans, and my wolf grew restless. But as I tilted my head and immersed myself in the kiss, the man suddenly broke it off, stepping back with his fingers loosening around my throat. I stared up at him, my mind still hazy from the kiss.
I think he felt the connection too. His eyes widened as he looked at me in shock. He turned away, taking steps that would lead him into the trees. I released a breath I hadn’t known I had been holding and leaned back against the tree.
I ran my fingers over the healing bruise on my neck, a mixture of pain and lingering pleasure making me groan. I needed to return to the pack house.
Dread clawed at my insides, anticipating my father's countless questions about my tattered dress and the fading mark on my neck.
Fingers crossed, I could only hope that the man who had ignited these unfamiliar desires within me was indeed my destined mate.
My heart raced, not just from the kiss but from the fear of the unknown. And as I made my way back to the pack house, the moonlight bathed my trembling form, leaving me to question the depths of my desires.
Three weeks later, I wandered through the thick woods, the crisp night air gently touching my skin. A mix of excitement and anxiety surged within me. It had been three weeks since my last venture into the woods, encountering that peculiar young man.
Moving further into the woods, the moonlight filtered through the dense treetops, casting enchanting patterns on the ground. The memories of our meeting echoed in my mind, growing more pronounced with each step I took.
Confusion and longing mingled in my thoughts. The undeniable, potent attraction he wielded over me transcended reason. The yearning to see him again consumed me. As I arrived at a well-known clearing, illuminated by the moon's silver glow, a sense of anticipation charged the air. My heart raced, acknowledging that I stood where it all began.
Breaking the silence, his voice emerged, startling me. "Well, look who we have here," he drawled from the shadows, causing my heart to leap in surprise.
Taken aback, I stepped away, meeting the gaze of the young man lounging on a tree branch above. His intense stare sent shivers down my spine, and I realized I still didn't know his name."Do you live in the woods?" I questioned, my voice carrying a mix of curiosity and a hint of exasperation."I own a condo in the city with a breathtaking view. But I had a feeling we'd cross paths again," he responded, descending from the tree with a feline grace."I'm Magnus Kade," he introduced himself, extending his hand. "Audrey Smith," I replied, accepting his hand.Standing in front of me, his tall figure cast a shadow, evoking a mixture of emotions—fear, longing, and intense curiosity.I looked up at him with nervousness. "What brought you here the other day?""Avoiding fate," he responded, leaning against a tree and observing me. "It becomes exhausting trying to force my own happiness. And you?"I paused, trying to find the right words. "I usually come here for some quiet time," I said defen
"Why didn't you mark me?" I inquired, confusion evident in my voice."I want to do this the right way," Magnus replied, his gaze fixed on some distant point. "We'll announce our bond tomorrow and have a proper mating ceremony. How does that sound?"I nodded, a smile playing on my lips. I snuggled closer to him, relishing the warmth and safety of his arms."That's perfect," I whispered, contentment washing over me.When I woke up the next morning, Magnus' side of the bed was empty, as though he had never been there. The lingering scent of our passion filled the air, and I found myself revisiting the memories of the night before. The day had just started, and our love story was unfolding.Little did I realize that the challenges and adventures we would encounter were not yet complete. Our journey had only just begun, and I was eager to discover where it would take us.********************Present DayMagnus appeared vastly changed from the person I once knew. Days went by, filled with the dull routine of being alone and the constant replay of my own thoughts. One morning, I walked into the gardens, hoping to find comfort among the greenery. Out of nowhere, a voice broke the silence, catching me off guard."Hey, Audrey, right?" he said, smiling at me."Yeah, that's me," I replied, turning around to see Jaxon, Magnus' ally, the Alpha of the Blue Moon Pack."How are you holding up?" he asked, looking concerned."It's been tough, you know? But hey, I'm surviving," I said, trying to keep things light with a small smile."Surviving is a good start. I'm Jaxon, by the way," he introduced himself in a friendly way."Nice to meet you, Jaxon," I replied, feeling a mix of curiosity and caution."Umm, where are you headed?" he asked, still looking concerned."Nowhere in particular, just taking a walk," I said, glancing around."Is it okay if I join you?" he asked politely. I shrugged, trying to seem indifferent, and said, "Sure."As we walked, Jaxon's
Another night, another nightmare. I woke up once again with a start. To be fair, I had no right to call my blissful memories with Magnus a nightmare. But it always ended with him accusing me of betraying him.Since I was up already, I decided to take a stroll in the garden and hope the scent of fresh leaves would lure out Silver. I was due for a run in the woods, but after yesterday's incident with Magnus, I didn't want to push my luck.“What's happening?“ I noticed activity in the house. I pulled aside one of the omegas in the pack house.I could tell she didn't want to talk to me, but I was still their Alpha's mistress. “Tell me.“ I commanded with a confidence I didn't feel.“Alpha Magnus wants to see everyone in the square.“ She said curtly before scurrying away.I could tell Magnus wanted me to be late for the meeting, so he could make a fool of me in public. I was once the only woman in his eyes. Tears welled up in my eyes at the unfortunate change in our relationship.I could s
CHAPTER SEVEN.MAGNUS' POVHis question caught me off guard. Why does he want to know about Audrey? I hope for his sake he wasn't getting any idea about Audrey. She was mine!“Why do you ask?“ I said in a hard tone.“Nothing.“ He tried to cover his curiosity with nonchalance, but I knew better. “I just want to know why you made her your mistress while you still sneak around with other girls."“What I do in my free time is none of your business.“ I set him straight. “We have an alliance. As long as I'm not doing anything to jeopardize our alliance, you'll keep away from what's mine. Audrey is none of your business.““Chill out, man!“ He laughed and flopped down on a seat. “It was a harmless question. I have a little sister, you know? She reminds me of my sister, that's all.““Hmm.“ I gave him no response after that. Audrey was the love of my life, there was no doubt of that. Yes, we were mates, but I'd like to think that we had a connection aside from the mate bond. I would still love
ALEXA'S POVTHE NEXT MORNING:The car dropped me off in front of a magnificent building. I assume this is the pack house. I was told I could find my brother here.“This is your stop.“ The driver muttered. I carried my things and alighted. As expected, I was greeted with stares. I am a beautiful woman and I pride myself on that fact.“Hey, you.“ I pointed to one of the omegas cleaning up leaves in the compound. He rushed over quickly. “Where is Alpha Jaxon?““I'll take you to him.“ He bowed and offered to carry my bag, but I'd rather my arms fall off than let his dirty paws near my bag.“Just take me to him.““He's in here.“ I nodded and shooed him off. I knocked and heard a gruff response. That was not my brother. I sashayed in, and I was immediately arrested by a pair of curious gray eyes watching me. For a moment, I lost my hearing and forgot to speak.Luckily, my brother came to my rescue.“Alex!“ He stood up from opposite the delicious man and hugged him. I robotically hugged hi
AUDREY'S POV. After the conversation I overheard, I locked myself in my room until I could think of a plan. Another part of me was hoping Magnus would send for me and explain himself, but he didn't.That night, I made a decision. I was going to leave Magnus. I won't ever stop loving him, but I am done being his doormat. I sought out Jaxon. He's the only person that can get me out of this hellhole. He's an Alpha too, so I'm sure he has somewhere I can stay hidden. “Audrey ? What are you doing here?“ He was visibly surprised to see me.“Can I talk to you?““Sure.“ There was no hesitation in his voice. I suspected he had feelings for me but this just confirmed it. He was the only one that actively made an effort to speak to me. “Come in.““I need your help,“ I said bluntly.“Anything. What do you need?““I need to leave this place.“ He went still for a few minutes.“What…what do you mean?““I mean I need your help with running away from this place. You're the only one that has enough r
AUDREY'S POV.“Magnus? Why is he calling you?“ I instantly went into panic mode.“Relax.““No.““Audrey, calm down. There's no way he's found out already.““Yeah?“He quickly parked the car before receiving his call.“Magnus, what's up?“I couldn't hear what he said, but he relaxed, letting me know that it was not what I was thinking.“No, she's okay with it. Yeah.“He dropped the call.“So?““It was just some pack business. He wanted to know if Alex was okay with the whole marriage shenanigan.“Oh, I shouldn't have asked. “Are you okay with it?“ I asked.“Yeah. I mean, they're both unmated, and they'll figure it out if they both ever meet their mates.““I see.“ “Plus, having a Luna would help solidify the alliance and let other packs know that he's not alone. It's a win-win for everyone.““Nice.“ Luckily, he stopped talking about it.*****Roughly 20 minutes later, we got to the house, and it could easily be missed if you weren't looking for it. “Here we are.“ He parked and retrie
