Mary Lou hears the sound of someone knocking on the door to the apartment she shares with Eliza and Fay but chooses to ignore it, opting instead to stay in her room and avoid any form of interaction. However, when she hears footsteps approaching her and the sound of a knock on her door, she knows that she cannot avoid this.

“Mary Lou,” Fay says as she slowly pokes her head into the room. “There’s someone here to see you.”

“Who is it?” Mary Lou asks.

“A man,” Fay answers with a whisper. “He has flowers.”

Mary Lou groans. Not that she is not a fan of flowers. Quite the opposite. In fact, she is a sucker for such gestures but she knows who that man is most likely to be – Logan. Logan Michaelson, the theater director who was initially rude to Mary Lou when he met her at his audition and then invited her on a date after she stood up for herself.

She has been avoiding him ever since the date. Her excuse was that there was a bigger issue to focus on – the possibility that Stanley w

It has been a week since Eloise told her husband that she is pregnant and things have been going smoother than she expected. She has been able to hide the pregnancy from everyone although doing so from her friends was a bit of a chore. It was hard convincing Mary Lou, Eliza and Fay that the conversation she had with Stanley simply ended when he told her the truth about what he has been up to. However, when she revealed nothing more, they chose to take her word for it albeit with some skepticism. Every night since then, Stanley has returned home earlier and exceedingly happy. As a form of ritual, he would pick Eloise up when she opens the door and spin her around until she screams at him to put her down. Then he would drop her gently on the couch, stare longingly into her eyes and place a gentle kiss on her forehead and then her tummy.Eloise always protests and acts as though these playful but sweet acts of his annoy her but in their repetition but she enjoys it so much that she alwa

“How are you, dear?” Phyllis goes to Eloise first and pulls her in for a half hug before turning to face Stanley. “And you think that it’s a good idea to just keep your wife standing here? I guess there are no such things as gentlemen anymore.”Stanley rolls his eyes and holds Eloise’s hand, leading her towards the dining area while Phyllis follows them. Despite the show of friendliness and affection from everyone in the family so far, Eloise cannot help but still feel a bit out of place. Maybe it is some residual felling from the hostility that they have shown her in the past or a part of her still feels like this is all a ruse but Eloise just cannot feel herself fitting in to this scene. “How have you been, Eloise?” Phyllis asks after they are seated at the table with an obviously irritated Charlotte. “We have not had a proper conversation since you returned from your honeymoon.”The question throws Eloise off. Does Phyllis Bradshaw really want to know how she has been or is she j

While everyone else is drinking, Eloise excuses herself and goes to the bathroom. There, she finally lets out a breath that she did not even realize that she was holding. Of course, a dinner with the Bradshaws will be a rollercoaster of emotions. Fear, joy, apprehension, relaxation; they know how to give a person an entire spectrum of feelings. Just as she turns around to leave, the door opens and Charlotte walks in, looking at her with a smirk on her face.“Hello, Charlotte,” Eloise says. Charlotte is maybe the only member of the family that Eloise has barely interacted with but Eloise has always gotten the sense that the younger woman does not like her. She has always come across to Eloise as just a younger version of Phyllis Bradshaw. “Nobody says no to a glass of champagne,” Charlotte says with arms folded, standing between Eloise and the door. “Not even when they are dying from an infection.”“Well, I happen to take my doctor’s orders very seriously.” Eloise intends to stand by

That night when Mary Lou returns to her apartment, she ignores Fay and Eliza who are barraging with questions and heads straight to her room where she plops on the bed and falls asleep in minutes. When she wakes up the next morning, memories of the previous night and the conversation floods her mind like intrusive thoughts. Although when she was having the conversation with Logan, she had been proud of herself for being strong enough to say exactly what she wants. Now, she wonders if she made a rash decision. Maybe she should have given him a chance. Maybe other opportunities in the theatre will arise but not ones in a romantic relationship. It seems to her that she lost on both sides.Mary Lou walks out of her room to the living room where Eliza and Fay are seated, each one of them holding a magazine in their hand. Fay appears to be reading a style section while Eliza is solving a crossword puzzle. When she walks to them, they both look up from what is open in front of them to look

The moment that Stanley walks into his parents’ house and childhood home, he can already tell that he is about to hear something unpalatable. Maybe it is the way Mildred tells him that his parents are waiting for him in the living room or the way they are both seated in silence, looking at him as he walks into the living room.“Father, mother, what’s wrong?” he asks them.“Have a seat, son,” James says. Stanley takes a seat opposite his father. He cannot help but feel like he is on trial and his offences are about to be read to him.“From our interaction with Eloise at dinner,” Phyllis begins. “Charlotte and I have come to the conclusion that your wife is pregnant. Did you know that?”“Yes,” Stanley says, keeping his expression hard and unshaken. On his way, he thought about the possibility of this conversation happening and he has prepared himself to not express shock. “You do realize that her pregnancy is coming at a bad time for us, don’t you?” James asks.It takes most of Stanle

“My mother?” Eloise shifts in her seat. There is not much that she has heard about her mother other than the fact that she died during Eloise’s own birth. Even when she was younger, her father never brought her up and Eloise had no other family that she could have gone to for more information. “Yes, dear, your mother,” Shirley repeats. “What about her?” Eloise asks even though she is terrified of the answer that she might get. It seems to her that all the conversations surrounding her mother seem to be one traumatic thing or the other. “Your mother is not originally from Blue Creek. I mean, I am but I moved away when I was much younger to the far west in California.”Eloise smiles in surprise. “You travelled?”Shirley smiles too and has a look on her face as though she is staring into the distance and seeing her youthful days. “Oh, I was the definition of wanderlust. From the moment I saw all of Blue Creek, I knew that I could not wait to leave it. So, I left and I travelled and st

Stanley sits and listens intently as Eloise narrates what her grandmother, who is currently sleeping in the guest room, told her. Eloise is standing in front of him, pacing as she is talking. On his way home, he had been thinking of how he would tell her all the ridiculous things that his parents said to him, but when he got home, she had pulled him quickly and told him she had something to tell him. Now, he is hearing things about California and some inheritance. His whole day feels terribly like a fever dream.“So, now I am really confused,” Eloise says as she completes her rambling. “Let me get this straight,” Stanley adjusts in his seat. “You have a lot of money just waiting for you in California and you have to go there to get it.”“Yes,” Eloise groans. “What do you want to do?”“I don’t know.” Eloise sits next to Stanley. “What should I do?”“I cannot tell you what to do, Eloise,” he says. “It’s your decision.”“Oh, come on, Stanley! Mary Lou quickly drops her bag to the side and goes to join some girls who are reading their lines. It has been three days since she started showing up at the theatre and she has since realized that she has absolutely nothing to worry about as far as Logan’s professionalism is concerned. So far, he has been nothing but an upright director towards her. Sure, he is lenient to her mistakes than he is to most people and some people already even call her his favorite, but who does not want the director to excuse them from constant tongue lashing. Logan does not talk to her directly the rest of the reading. The only times that he addresses her are when he does so to the group. At the end of the day, she is shocked when he comes to stand beside her as she is packing her bag and getting ready to leave.“Is something wrong?” she asks.“Come with me to my office,” he says and then walks away from her. "Dad," Stanley says, his voice barely above a whisper. A mixture of shock and confusion flickers across his face. "What are you doing here?" James smiles, a knowing, almost condescending smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. He strides forward with the confidence of a man accustomed to being in charge, and comes to stand beside Sebastian. "Stanley," James greets, his voice smooth and measured. "I see you've met Sebastian. We've been in touch for some time now, discussing matters that concern both of us—and, by extension, you." Stanley feels a rush of emotions—anger, betrayal, and confusion—swirl within him. His mind races to make sense of this unexpected alliance. "What is going on?" Stanley demands, his voice stronger now, fueled by the simmering anger. "Why are you here, and what are you both up to?" His mind is a whirlwind of thoughts, primarily centered on the man he is about to confront, Sebastian Flores. As he navigates through the busy traffic, he reflects on the events that have led him here. The revelation of Emily's orchestrated scheme to drive Eloise to the brink had been a shocking blow. But it had also brought to light deeper, more sinister undercurrents. Who else had been involved? And why? The questions gnawed at him, fueling his determination to find answers. The cityscape gradually gives way to the sprawling suburbs, with their neatly manicured lawns and tree-lined streets. Police officers surround them and their presence is a comforting assurance of safety. Before they walk forward, Eloise looks to Stanley who gives her a reassuring look. The lead detective knock gently and after a short while, the door swings open to reveal Emily. As always, she is poised and elegant in a short black dress and black heels. The streets of New York City are just as busy and lively as they usually are but to Stanley, they feel distant and muted. The crisp air bites at his skin, a stark reminder of the approaching winter. The sky is a heavy gray, threatening snow that hasn't yet begun to fall. The wind whistles through the tall buildings, carrying the scent of roasted chestnuts from a vendor just a few feet away and the sharp, metallic tang of cold concrete. Stanley pulls his coat tighter around himself. As he walks, his breath is visible in the cold. The city's sounds—the honking of cars, the chatter of pedestrians, the distant wail of a siren—blend into a background hum that he barely registers. His mind is elsewhere, consumed by the revelations of the past few days. He thinks about the pieces that have fallen into place, the clues that led him to understand who is responsible for the turmoil that has gripped their lives.
