Incoming StepBrother

Don’t give me that look. I was just trying to be nice, but you ruined that one.

“I’m surprised you actually made it, Declan. I thought you would be out, you know, drinking, or partying, or doing one of your stupid ideas with your friends.”

His glare intensified, and his lips parted like he was going to say something. His father cleared his throat and sent him a stern look. Mom did the same to me, and I shut my lips.

Throughout the rest of the night, we sent each other glares from the opposite sides of the table. Mom and his dad were off talking about something irrelevant to me, so I drowned them out for most of it.

“So, Declan, have someone special in your life?” Mom asked.

“No, not currently,” Declan responded.

I let out a throaty laugh.

“Have you ever had anyone special in your life?” I asked and gave him a smirk.

His jaw clenched, and his bicep muscles tightened.

“Yes,” he said through gritted teeth.
