“Not used to vampires?” Mathias looked quizzical.

“I only found out you existed yesterday, when I arrived here.” He raised an eyebrow at me. “I was told before then, but...I’m not sure I believed it.”

Mathias shrugged “That sounds like a reasonable reaction, honestly.” I looked back at him; he smiled

“Had my family and I not been forced to turn by a very present vampire guard, I doubt I’d have believed either.”

“Forced?” I murmured at him. He smiled weakly.

“The Queen decreed that her court and all staff at the castle would turn along with her.” He glanced at the door then continued, bitterly “I suppose there is no point in forfeiting your life to the devil for a throne if every one of your subjects will die.” Then he looked up at me “Forget I said that”

I just stared at him, horrified “I can’t forget...but I won’t mention it” and he nodded gratefully, before turning to fetch me a desk from the viewing balcony. My mind was reeling – Carlotta might not have made a good impression

Plus she is my family. I bear her no ill-will”Lars scoffed. I'm going to end up murdering him myself. “For what reason do you wish to speak with the Queen?” I sighed “Otto, you cannot stop us. We are here to discuss Leda” “We have a leader! The Queen is impressive.”“This is why we wish to speak to the Queen and not you, you dimwit” Lars interrupted and I rolled my eyes to look at the sky.I didn’t need to look at Otto to see his reaction. “What?!” “My Lady, Miss Leda has left for a few days” “Yes, I heard you, I just do not understand. She was told she was not to leave until a cure was found.” The maid simply backed away, cowering. “Mathias!” I screamed. “Yes, My Lady?” Mathias entered the state room in a hurry. “Where is the Chosen One?” “My Lady?” The fool had the audacity to look genuinely confused. “I was advised that I was not required to guard her today. Was this incorrect?” I was seething. I had made it clear that she was not to leave until a cure had been found. She was the Chosen One – whatever that meant. It should mean that she knows how to cure this thing. Or to stop my subjects dying from it anyway. It’s bad enough she didn’t immediately recognise the symptoms but wanted to ‘research’ it. Magnus and Sebastien were both convinced she was special but I’m not certain it’s that she’s the Chosen One. I stood abruptly from the sofa and stamped my foot. “And who ‘advised’ you that you would not be

This ‘meeting’ was nonsense. Leda had barely stepped back in the country, let alone the castle and Carlotta was down her throat wondering why a cure hadn’t been found. I knew she wouldn’t be letting her live her life alongside this task. I tuned my cousin’s nasally voice out, puzzling over how I could get Leda out of their clutches. I’m sure her good will won’t last if this is how she’s treated. Torstein had said she and Brandt were close. I must have put it to the back of my mind because I hadn’t realised quite what he meant. I’d always considered myself a patient man but the way Leda smiles at him has me itching to lean across and rip his throat out, the pompous twat. I took a deep breath, steeling myself and looking away. I don’t know what’s gotten into me but seeing them together...I’m having a hard time keeping my human face on. I tuned back into this meeting, such as it was. It seemed more like General Magnus wanted a break from being the sole recipient of the Que

“Weeks!” Carlotta shouted across the table at me. She was right, I had been here for nearly 6 weeks and so far, I didn’t seem to be any closer to finding out how to stop this plague. I thought it was a little unfair to expect me to just know, but Carlotta evidently thought otherwise. I managed to resist rolling my eyes. I was back in the war room, as I found out the place, I’d first met the Vampire Queen, was called. I was here with Seb, Magnus, the Queen and Rasmus too. It was strange, but with Rasmus here, I found Seb less appealing. I shook my head, I’d consider that later, right now I had to focus on avoiding being stung by the Queen, who seemed to be feeling particularly waspish today. “I’m sorry Your Highness” I answered “I feel as though I’ve only just been made aware, and I am trying to find something which matches all the symptoms in each case” I explained “And I feel-” Carlotta sneered “That you have forgotten what you were told when you first arrived. You. Are. Not

“Are you sure no one noticed you?” Mathias whispering distracted me from the latest book I’d picked up. None of this made any real sense to me and I was beginning to wonder why anyone had ever thought I’d be able to help with this. I turned in my seat to see Mathias talking in hushed tones with a honey-blonde woman. He’d mentioned a family before, maybe this was his wife? That meant it wasn’t my business, so I turned back to the book, hoping something would jump out at me. “Miss Leda?” Mathias broke through again. “Leda, please Mathias.” “Leda, I’m Annalise.” The honey-blonde woman beamed at me. Hair tied back in a long braid, and pulled over her left shoulder. She had on a dark grey gown. It was a very pretty satin-like material but the colour reminded me of the guards’ uniforms. “Oh.” I looked questioningly at Mathias. “Hello, nice to meet you” I stood to meet her extended hand and shook it. How very formal; she had a firm handshake and I got the impression she was

That lazy fucking bitch. I swirled my index finger round the rim of my glass. I wasn’t sure if it had blood or wine in it anymore. Whatever it was, it wasn’t enough. And Sebastien had killed my favourite toy. Bastard. It’s been almost three months now. Adelaide doesn’t seem to have found a single thing. Every update I get, I’m told what it isn’t. I can’t placate my people on negatives! She is so fucking inconsiderate. So much for a ‘Chosen One’. Maybe this is all a ruse? Perhaps it was put in place by Bragi? Some infinite double bluff to make me doubt myself? She’s the first person to go into that library in decades and she can’t find whatever it is that’s killing my people?! I looked up as a warrior entered the throne room. He stopped mid-way across the room, a few feet from the edge of the dais where I sat. Then he knelt on his left knee, right fist across his chest. “My Queen” he stated, looking down. “Speak” I answered him He removed his helmet, and I would recognise th

“Hello?” I stopped in the entryway to the library. Mathias just about fit in behind me, but he didn’t seem bothered by the huge boulder of a man perched on the chair by my desk. Boulder-man looked up at me and grinned. Well, I assume he grinned; most of his face was covered in a huge flame-coloured beard. But his cheeks went up, along with his moustache; his beard inching up his barrelled chest. His eyes seemed to twinkle as they took me in. He stood to greet me, bowing his head and I saw his hair, tied back in a French braid, was just as long and orange as his beard. “Hello” His baritone voice blasted across the room, despite his evident attempt to whisper. “It is an honour to finally meet you, Miss Leda.” “This.” Announced Mathias, striding across the room to meet the stranger, “is Lars Grimmor” he finished, just an eye-blink before two hearty slaps on the back rung out across the still room as the two men greeted each other. I smiled, Lise spoke highly of this Lars, and Ma

“The library is far more impressive.” Rasmus’ voice cracked through the heavy silence. I couldn’t help it – the sob ripped from my throat; Lars opened his arms and I flung myself into them. There was a pregnant pause, then, a perplexed Rasmus spoke once more “I’ll...give you two a moment.” My face was buried in Lars’ barrel chest; his beard tickling my face, but I didn’t care. I’d immediately felt at ease in his presence. Now that made sense. I couldn’t see Rasmus; he’d sounded confused, but still, no footsteps indicated that he had left. “She is... Leda is... my niece” Lars managed to choke out as he stroked my hair with his spade-like hands. There was a sharp intake of breath. Then, silence. After a few minutes, I managed to retrieve my face from its hirsute harbour. Pulling myself away, I gave Lars a watery smile. He wiped the tears from my cheeks. “Neither of us are alone.” he whispered, poking my cheek gently upwards in an attempt to make me smile. I glanced ove

(THIS CHAPTER TAKES PLACE TWELVE YEARS AFTER CHAPTER 61) LEDA POV Rasmus calmly walks through the door to the suite, and I look at him, annoyed. “Why do I let you do this to me?!” I huff, as I bounce on a medicine ball. He grins “Mmm.” He pretends to consider the question as he stalks over to me “Because you love me” he announces confidently. He places his hands on my cheeks and turns my head up towards him; pecking me gently on the lips. I narrow my eyes at him, as he saunters back over to the other side of the room. He looks back at me, notices the look on my face, and gives me a smug, triumphant grin. “Less and less by the second” I tell him, bouncing harder He laughs “Funny. I seem to remember you saying something awfully similar last time.” he settles on the armchair’s arm. • Queen   EPILOGUE ONE - TEN YEARS LATER

RASMUS POV Ten years. It passed in the blink of an eye. Leda took to the role of queen like a duck to water, not that anyone but her ever had any doubt. She still hasn't opened her own bakery and she's still got an unhealthy obsession with Greggs pastries. She took her knowledge and skills from the university and got a degree in psychology. She's been helping with those vampires who struggle with their rebirth. She's still the most perfect creature in existence. The biggest obstacle we've had to overcome has been the 'council'. Because Leda was right, of course. Some of the council ‘men’ – I sneer at the thought – seemed to assume that Leda would be a queen similar to Carlotta. It started with inappropriate comments. I thought I’d shut them down well enough but then Orm decided to corner Leda after a meeting. I grit my teeth as I walk along.

The two of us remain silent. A hush descends over the crowd. “King Rasmus.” Harald addresses me directly before turning to Leda “Adelaide” he smiles indulgently as she scrunches her nose up. “Will you take Adelaide to be your wife? Will you take King Rasmus to be your husband? Will you love each other, comfort each other honour and protect each other, and, forsaking all others, be faithful to each other as long as you both shall live?” “We will” Leda and I respond simultaneously. I catch Leda smile at me from the corner of my eye and I reach out to squeeze her hand. Harald coughs and I retract my hand quickly. He nods. The crowd titters. “I understand you have your own vows? King Rasmus if you would like to read yours first?” I take a deep breath and turn to look at Leda. She smiles at me and reaches out to hold my hand. Harald coughs and she tuts at him, shooting him a glare. He rolls his eyes and shakes his head with a smile; giving up, just like that! “Leda” I whisper. She squ

I wanted to surprise Leda. I’m not sure if the new law was the way to go about it. She just looks... confused. “Come.” I tell her “I have one more surprise for you.” I just hope she’s less confused about this next surprise. I lead her through the castle corridors to the royal suite – it's been completely redone since Carlotta’s death. It was one of the first things I did – try to rid the place of any and all Danneskiold stains. “Did you... did you enact that law for me?” Leda suddenly asks. “I did. Well, with you in mind. Nothing will ever take away what I did to you, Leda.” I sigh “But also, Carlotta forced people to turn – I can’t conscience that. I don’t know what I was thinking when I did it to you, but I –” “Thank you” she interrupts and takes my hand. I smile down at her, squeezing her hand gently. We reach the suite and I open the door and step aside, so Leda can enter first. She steps in and I hear her short intake of breath as she looks around. Ca

  • Queen   CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE – LEDA

It’s been eighteen months and Rasmus has finally given in. Today he will officially be crowned king in a big ceremony with loads of droning ‘councilmen’ who think they know best because they voted him in. Even though he was born to the role and has been doing a better job of it than anyone else for almost three hundred years. I told him to let them have their time and then pass a law disbanding them. He looked at me like I had six heads. I still think it’s a good idea considering how much stress they’ve caused him. I’m about to knock on the door, I know he’s practising some speech but... I just want to see him. “Are you sure about this Ras?” “Yes. I have to make a stand. Leda suggested I just disband them all; I think this is better.” I swear I hear Torstein shrug. “Maybe you should ask Leda?” Lise is in there too!? “Huh?” I choose that moment to push open the door “Ask Leda what?” “We’ll let Rasmus explain!” Lise quickly squeaks, then grabs hold of Torstein

I pull on his hair, tugging him back up toward me. He obliges, and our lips meet in another fiery kiss. This time, I manage to hook my toes over his waistband and tug down his trousers and boxers in one go. His cock bounces free. I look down in anticipation and am momentarily stunned. A good 1.5 inches thick, his cock is oozing precum already. Standing to attention, it’s about seven inches long – verging on too big. I swallow. This is mine now. I grin and lick my lips. Rasmus smiles at me indulgently, as he reaches over to the bedside table. “What are you doing?” “Uh... I put these here a while back...” he mutters sheepishly as he pulls out some condoms. “Condoms?” He looks at me, eyebrow raised “I know I admitted to being a prick, Leda, but I’m not completely irresponsible.” “I - I guess I never thought about it.” I mutter. Suddenly feeling a bit ill about all the unprotected sex I had with Sebastien. Rasmus notices my change in mood “Leda? Are you OK? Would

I broke the kiss. We were both breathing heavily. As soon as I broke away from him, I wanted, no, I needed his lips back on mine. Where they belonged. Instead, I opened my stupid mouth. “I’ve got an idea.” “Mmm?” Rasmus moved back slightly; giving me space to speak and again, I wondered why I’d broken the kiss. Neither of us need to breathe now. We could have just stayed like that forever. “Maybe you could use that vampire super power of yours and take off all my clothes?” I whispered to him, reaching out to take hold of the collar of his top and pull his face back to mine. I thought I was being coquettish, but it doesn’t have the desired effect. Rasmus takes a step away from me. Definitely not what I was going for. “My vampire superpower? I... I don’t understand?” “I thought you could... y’know... use it to, er, spice things up?” I try again “Maybe? No?” He just looks so utterly confused. I probably deserve that. She sticks her tongue out at me and I resist the urge to turn and bite it. *** I pull up on the side of a little street. Leda looks around confused “Are we still in London?” “Yep.” I smile at her. “It’s a little off the beaten path...” “You're not taking me to a local place for local people, are you?” I laughed and got out of the car.
