Five

Three days later

A frown creased Marcus's face as he gazed out the window. It had been three days and he had not heard anything from Lilian.

She did not call him or even send him a text message like she always does, which was very unusual of her.

Marcus's mind during the drive home. As he arrived, he didn't hesitate, getting out of the car and walking into the house with a sense of purpose.

It was quiet which was not normal.

Marcus walked into their room, he had not slept there for a while and this was the first time he was entering here after a long time.

It was unexpected that Lilian was not inside the room.

“What trick is she playing this time? What I gave her is plenty for her to live a comfortable life for the rest. Does she think that’s not enough? So greedy.” He thought with a slight frown between his eyes.

He scoffed at the thought of this. This annoyed him and made him wonder why he was still thinking about that scheming woman.

He turned and was about to walk out of the room when his eyes suddenly saw the papers on the table.

Marcus stopped and walked towards it.

Marcus flipped it open, he felt like his heart quivered when he saw her signature on the divorce papers.

Her handwriting was beautiful but not for this one. He wondered if she cried or if her hand shook when she was signing it.

Marcus's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched as he gritted his teeth. A vein pulsed in his temple, betraying his growing irritation. The signature seemed to choke him.

He couldn't believe he actually thought it would take a while to convince her to sign the contract.

"It's all about money."Marcus smiled mockingly.

Marcus's gaze dropped, his shoulders sagging as he exhaled slowly. He was supposed to be happy that he was right but somehow he had a strange sense of loss in his heart.

He naturally ignored and refused to think of other possibilities, blamed on the fact she didn’t tell him she signed the paper for this mixed feeling.

“Why did she not tell me that she had signed it?” He found it irritating.

He dipped his hand into his pocket for his phone to call her.

That was when he saw those missed calls on his phone.

“Hello?” Marcus called the unsaved number back, thinking it might be her.

“This is heritage hospital, how can we help you?” A voice said on the phone.

Marcus tilted his head slightly with puzzlement. He was confused by the unexpected call from the hospital but he really needed to talk to Lilian first.

“Hello, did Lilian contact you?” Marcus called his assistant and the call was picked up immediately.

“Yes, sir. She turned down all the property you offered, mansion, money, shares.” His assistant answered.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Marcus was mad.

"I'm sorry, sir, but I was required not to report anything about madam." His assistant said cautiously.

Marcus's eyes widened as the memory hit him - the conversation with his assistant, the explicit instructions about his wife, every move he made to isolate her from him. He tightened his grip on the phone, trying to gather his jumbled thoughts with everything flashed back.

But that didn't mean she had the right to do that. How could she leave without telling? Why did she not accept anything from him? Was it some kind of new game she played? To make him feel not right?

Marcus's pace faltered, his feet dragging as if rooted to the spot. The silence of the house enveloped him, a physical presence that pressed upon his chest, making each breath a struggle, the oppressive silence of the house enveloping him like a shroud, making every step feel like a struggle.

Her smell used to be everywhere before, her voice calling him and trying to please him. But now it seemed very quiet like the house had been abandoned for a long time.

This was the result he wanted, why is he feeling sad now?

He had no idea why he was feeling this way, maybe because he was already used to her?

Marcus's brow furrowed, his thoughts consumed by a mix of emotions he couldn't quite untangle, like a knot he couldn't loosen.

“Find her,” Marcus commanded coldly before he hung up the call.
