ATHENA
It was as though the world had titled on its axis.
I could not catch my breath and he kept his eyes on me as though waiting for me to say something.
But what could one say when a man makes a promise to kill for you.
“I-” I sputtered, clearing my throat slightly.
“We are here” He announced.
He got out of the car and circled round to hold the door open and help me out of it.
The moment was already broken but I could not stop thinking about what he said.
He followed me into the bar.
Did that mean that he meant to meet with me? Or he was merely curious as to what was wrong with me or both.
A waiter greeted us with a smile on her face and so did the receptionist.
“Mr Hall, it has been a long time since you graced us with your presence.” She commented right before turning to me.
The smile dropped from her face.
There was no doubt she used to harbor feelings for Rafael and probably thought me a competition.
“This is Athena and we will be having the special”
The girl smiled again as she turned him and called for the attention of the chef, not acknowledging the introduction that had been made between us
“Such a rude bitch” I commented.
“Let us sit” He said not responding to my comment.
He chose the end of the room where a single table and two chairs sat. I noticed that some of the people in the bar greeted him but other than that, there was no fawning over him and no overreaction at his presence.
I found it weird seeing as he was a popular billionaire.
“If you want to stand while eating then I will humor you” His cutting voice brought me out of my thoughts.
I slid into the chair he held out, my eyes dark.
“As you know I do not even want to be here with you so pardon me if I am not showing as much enthusiasm as the receptionist.”
He sighed.
“She is someone I used to know… we both attended the same school”
“I did not ask for a break down of your life or that of the people you know so you can spare me the knowledge, Mr Hall” I mimicked, scoffing.
“Then why are you acting like a bitch?”
I scoffed, eyeing him.
“Of course you will think that because I am not groveling at your feet and worshiping the ground you are walking on.”
He leaned forward, his lips turning up in a smile.
“I did not ask you to but it would be nice”
“In your fucking dreams” I snapped.
His smile only grew wider as I said this.
That absolutely beautiful and infuriating smile,
It made my knees weak just by flashing in my direction.
I shook my head.
Athena, you are not weak and the only reason you are reacting this way is because you are pregnant. Your emotions and feelings are very heightened so I do not blame you.
I tried to reassure myself while we waited for food.
“Tell me about yourself” He changed the subject.
“I do not want to” I countered.
“For fuck sake, woman… you do not have to be so difficult all the time, you know and I was merely making conversation”
“If that is the case then tell me about yourself instead” I smirked, folding my arms across my chest.
“Very well” He murmured.
“My name is Rafael Hall as you well know and I was adopted as a boy of fifteen.”
I did not know that, I thought.
“You were an orphan?” I asked, my interest suddenly piqued.
“I was kidnapped when I was twelve and so I have no idea about my family”
What the fuck, I thought.
“Are you messing with me?” My eyes narrowed.
He did not look like he was telling a joke and I felt suddenly sorry for him. He was kidnapped and then what happened? I did not think any story like this was in the media.
“What happened after your kidnap?” I asked
“I do not remember but one day I was in the streets and taken to an orphanage and the next week, I was adopted by some rich family. The last thing I remember is the kidnap” He smiled sadly.
Three years of his life and he could not remember a thing, now that would drive anyone fucking crazy.
“I am sorry” I told him.
“There is nothing to be sorry about” He raised his head, the sadness in his eyes gone.
“Is that why you want this baby so much?”
“That is partly the reason why and the second is I do not believe in abortions. Athena and if I must have a child, it might as well be you.”
“Now, what the hell is that supposed to mean?” I glowered at him.
“You are presentable… your facial features are not bad in any way”
I should feel offended if I wasn’t feeling giddy at his somewhat praise of my beauty.
I tried to feel offended but I could not.
“Facial… presentable?” I scoffed.
I was just about to launch into a detail of myself from high school where boys chased me around but we were interrupted by the arrival of the food.
It was a large meal.
“Thank you, please make sure we are not interrupted” He smiled, putting some dollar bills in the hands of the waiter.
The man’s face lit up like a Christmas tree and he bowed his head as low as he could before dashing off to no doubt fulfil Rafael’s command.
“You sure know how to get them moving” I commented, picking up my spoon.
The meal tasted like heaven and I dug into it with a gusto that surprised me while he watched, picking at his food.
He had something on his mind judging by the way his eyes never left me.
“I do not eat too much on a normal day” I defended.
“I am sure you don’t, Athena” He mocked.
“I really do not” I countered. “I think it is the baby needing more and more from me”
He chuckled at this.
“It doesn’t matter how much you eat… I am very capable of taking care of you and my baby”
I tried not to blush but my cheeks reddened considerably.
Who was this man? I thought.
I wanted to think that since he was holding me against my will minus the contract I had signed, I could have been long gone from here but I wasn’t moving.
He had peaked my interest quite alright and it wasn’t so easily peaked.
I patted a hand to my stomach, rubbing it gently.
I felt it then, a kick.
My face lit up with excitement.
“What is it?” He asked me, his eyes filled with concern.
“I think the baby just kicked” I answered in wonder.
“Really?” He smiled.
I nodded vigorously, patting my stomach lightly again then rubbing it. There it was… another kick.
I reached for his hand instinctively and placed it to my stomach so he could feel the next kick.
It did something to him when he felt it… the facade for a moment stripped away and my skin crawled at the cold and empty look in his eyes.
ATHENAI am sure I imagined it, I thought. The goosebumps coating my arms at the moment however would say otherwise.I had felt it… that chill and hate about him. It almost made me whimper in fear.“I did not know they kicked so early” He commented, his hand still on my stomach. There was a slight smile on his face now, nothing like what I had seen.“Yeah, the doctor did say anytime now” I told him.He nodded slightly, removing his hand.“Are you not going to eat anymore?” He asked.I stared at the food, my appetite suddenly gone.“I think I am full” I told him.“Shall we leave then?” He rose to his feet, putting a hand out to help me.I took it without saying a word in protest and allowed him lead me out of the restaurant and back into the car.He must have noticed something was wrong because he spurn me around, his arms coming to my shoulders.“You are suddenly awfully quiet” He commented.“I just do not feel like talking after eating” I told him, taking a breath.I was unable to me
RAFAELAm I losing my fucking mind?Maybe that would be the reason I am so disturbed by her.How many times do I have to remind myself that she is the enemy and the plan is to destroy everything she holds dear?Maybe she wasn’t the enemy but the apple never falls far from the tree and her father was my nemesis.Imagine my surprise when I had learned about her identity and the fact that she was the daughter of the man who had kidnapped me as a child. The man who had ruined my life and who still plagued my dreams.I sunk into my chair in the study, not wanting to be around her any longer.I had almost let down my guard today at the restaurant. For a brief moment when I felt the baby kick, I had been reminded of Rachael… so full of life who had been pregnant too at the time I was kidnapped. She did not tell me how she came about being pregnant but she was also experimented upon and died in the process.Athena’s father is a doctor you see, one of the most top performing surgeons in the co
ATHENA“What do you mean by you don’t know where he is?” he asked me,He looked overly concerned as he asked and completely surprised by the fact that I didn’t know where my father was. This didn’t take me by surprise though because who wouldn’t be surprised by that fact. How would one not know where their own parents are?Sometimes it even surprised me and I found it very funny on other days, days such as this. A little laugh escaped my lips, an uncomfortable laugh. I found the fact that my father took off without me absolutely hilarious, given the fact that he always treated me like the best part of his world but then I guess the best part of his world did not belong in his world anymore.I shouldn’t be as shocked by his disappearance though, this would not be the first time that he would up and leave for months on end but then, something about this time felt extremely different. I had the feeling that he wasn’t planning on coming back.He had been radio silent all this time and all
RAFAELThe clattering of the books as they fell off the desk was very loud as I flipped the table over almost immediately as she walked out the door. I was extremely furious at everything that she just said. What does she mean by she doesn’t know where her father is?I knew he had dropped off the radar for some time now and I had no idea where he was. I had been tracking him for some time now before he suddenly disappeared without a single trace and all my trials to find him had proven to be unfruitful. Her appearance in my life had given me renewed hope and now that hope had just been dashed by the fact that she knew nothing. The thought that she was probably lying about it flashed in my mind but then I remembered the look she had on her face when she was talking. That was the look of someone that was hurt by what they were saying. She really had no idea where he was but just to be safe, I was not going to just rule out the fact that she could still know. She was his daughter, he lov
ATHENA“Who are you?” the woman asked, as she looked in my direction.I immediately froze in place, completely unable to say anything or even move as I tried to figure out who she was. She looked much older than Rafael so I wasn’t sure if she was one of his love interests or just a casual person. She had this calm elegance about her, as her eyes bounced from me to Rafael who was standing in front of her.“Who is she?” she asked him this time,“She is-” he began to stutter, struggling to explain who I was.A similar question danced in my thoughts as I wondered who she was. Her green eyes continued to look at me as she awaited a response from Rafael which didn’t seem like it was coming anytime soon.I saw a smile form on her face as she no doubt noticed how nervous she made me and how nervous even Rafael was.“I didn’t know you had a girl over.” She said, with a slight chuckle. “Why didn’t you tell me?”She hit him across the shoulder with a friendly, loving demeanor.“I wasn’t sure how
RAFAELMy mother’s visit had been an unexpected surprise but then it was still a welcome one. In a way I had missed her extremely much and the only reason why I had not been to see her was really work and how busy I had gotten trying to use all my resources to track down Hermes King. Even though it had taken me completely by surprise, I was still happy she was there.Explaining to her that I had kidnapped the daughter of the man who had kidnapped me when I was much younger and she was expecting a child for me would be too much work. It was better for me to just play along with what she thought in her mind. For now she thought me and Athena were a thing and most likely in love and that’s just how it had to seem at least until it wasn’t possible to keep up that facade.I pulled out my phone from my pocket as I closed the door and dialed Charles’s number. Charles was the private investigator that I had hired to help me carry out business. He was the best tracker that I knew and if there
ATHENAHe kept on stealing stares and glances at me all through the dinner and for some very weird reason I found it cute that he couldn’t take his eyes off me. Our eyes met a couple of times and there were times he held my gaze before I averted mine and continued the conversation with his mom. There was something different about the last look we shared though, I could feel the intensity of his eyes bearing down into me like he was trying to bore a hole through me.This made me entirely uncomfortable and I started stuttering my words when I was talking to Christine. Even at that, his eyes were still completely fixed on me and I could get that vibe once again. That sinister aura which I had felt at the dinner and in the car back then, there it was in full force once again and this time I couldn’t possibly just dismiss it as nothing.I looked at him questioningly but that didn’t deter him even a little bit, if anything, it spurred him on even more. This made me extremely uncomfortable a
RAFAELI flung the cup of whiskey on the wall as soon as I entered into the study and I watched it shattered into a million pieces.“Fuck!” I yelled out, thinking about how stupid I had been. She had been deceiving me all this time and for some weird reason I hadn’t seen it. I had given her the benefit of doubt and a part of me had started to believe that she actually had no idea where her father was but then, there was no explanation for that photo. He was in it, which meant he was in close proximity with her and knowing Hermes, there was no way he would be that close to her and not reach out. It was totally impossible.I sat down on my chair, as I thought about everything. My reaction to everything had been extremely stupid. I had felt I would be able to keep everything in but when I had confronted her about it and she lied, a switch inside my head had flipped. At that moment, all I could see in her was her father and it made me sick to my stomach. She no doubt suspected that someth
EPILOGUETHREE MONTHS LATER“He is so beautiful.” Athena said, as she lifted up their baby and spun him around in the air.The past months after the baby had come had been nothing short of magical. She couldn’t stop staring at the baby and she thought about how different her life was now from how it had been just a couple of months ago. They were at a point of peace and Rafael had magically transformed into the sweetest person on the earth. She now saw him smile a lot, especially when he played with Jaden. They had both chosen the baby’s name together after a lot of arguments. It had been a funny scene to witness but at the end of the day, they had settled for Jaden and it was a name that suited him so well.“He has my eyes so of course he is going to look beautiful.” Rafael said, as he emerged at the door of the room.He had been standing there for a while watching his mother and Athena without them knowing. They were startled at first, but at this point they had gotten used to the f
RAFAEL“Watch your step.” I said, as I held her hands and led her into the house. She had absolutely refused my offers to carry her. In her words, she felt I had done enough. On the contrary, I felt I was yet to do enough. I was not sure if I could ever do enough to compensate for everything that I had put her through in the past few months. I felt it in my heart though, I was definitely ready to make amends for everything. That was the plan. The doctor had finally agreed to discharge her from the hospital and we got back to a welcome party from my mother. She had been extremely happy over the past few days. Ever since I told her the news at the hospital about how the baby might actually be mine, I realized that the glow which she had the first time she found out that Athena was pregnant had actually returned to her face. I couldn’t be hundred percent sure if I was the father, not until the baby was here and we were able to carry out a DNA test.I could feel it in my bones though. It
ATHENAMy eyes fluttered open, as I came to. A faint beeping noise continued to ring in my head, as I steered wondering where it was coming from. My equilibrium was still off and I had no idea what was going on around me. My mind felt like it was covered by a thick fog and it was very hard to get it clear. My eyelids felt extremely heavy and it was like they were being weighed down by invisible anchors. Finally, I was able to pry them open. It took some time for my eyes to get accustomed to the lighting in the room. There was a light which shone soft and dull right above my head, casting a pale glow across the room I was in.I looked around as it took me a moment to adjust, to process the white walls of the room it was in. There was the hum of machinery all around me, that was where the constant beeping sound was coming from and that smell. It was a very distinct smell which I recognized immediately. I had spent enough time in hospitals during my mother’s hospital to be able to recogn
“Athena!” Rafael yelled, as he rushed over to her side.He had watched her fall when he came out of the car and this had taken him completely by surprise. He knew that she could already tell exactly what had happened from the moment he stepped out of the car. The stench of failure was no doubt all around him and he had thought about it all through the drive to the house. He thought about how he was going to tell her that her father was dead and he had watched as Hernandez put a bullet through his head as he was unable to do anything about it. The mere thought of telling her such a thing troubled him so deeply and it showed on his face immediately he stepped out of the car.Without him saying a word, she could already tell that the worst had happened. The look in his eyes told more words than he could ever say. Athena had felt like she was going to cry, as if a great burden had just come upon her shoulder. A burden which was too heavy for her to bear. She felt like she was going to cru
RAFAELWe finally pulled up to the house and my mother was right outside to greet us. She was so happy that we made it out, as I watched her hug Athena deeply. She checked her to ensure that she was fine while she led her into the house. I could see a deep sadness on Athena’s face even though she tried her best to hide it for my mother’s sake. I could tell that she was greatly troubled about what happened to her father. Her words in the car kept on ringing in my head. She had asked me to help him and there was only one way I knew how to.Walking past them, I headed to my room upstairs and went straight to my wardrobe to bring out my box. This was where I kept my suit and weapons which I used when I raided Hermes’s warehouses. Every time I wore it, it meant that I was about to do something which I was not essentially going to be proud of. I stared at the box for a couple of seconds as I contemplated whether or not to open it. Questions danced around in my head as I wondered if doing th
The whole room seemed to be in a sort of chokehold, as everybody’s eyes bounced around. Hermes’s arrival had been quite unexpected to all of them and they had no idea what any of this meant or what he was doing here. From the way that he had burst in, his intentions could be told to some degree though. He was standing in between his two guards who had come into the room with him and he had a smile as he stared at the meeting which was going on at the table. Rafael most especially was very surprised by all that was going on. He wasn’t sure what to make of all of this as so many questions ran through his mind.He got up and walked over to Hermes as their eyes met.“What the fuck are you doing here?” Rafael asked,“And here I was thinking that you were an honorable man that I could trust, Mr Hall.” The investor said, as he sat up and adjusted his suit. “The last thing I was expecting was that you would bring the enemy right to my doorstep after you were the one that asked for this deal t
RAFAELAll through the night leading up to this, I found myself completely unable to sleep. This was certainly not a new phenomenon for me. Sleep had managed to elude me a lot during the past few days and I desperately hoped that I would finally be able to find rest when all of this was in the past. When Athena and the baby were safe and sound, I would finally be able to rest and think about everything. I had desperately avoided thinking about what Rachael had told me the other day. This whole time, I had not even considered the possibility that the child that Athena was carrying could be my own in any way. Initially I had seen it as a means to carry out my revenge on Hermes.Raising the child the way which he had raised me, that was what I had planned to do. That plan had since left my head, but then, I still had never considered the possibility of the child being mine. All I had thought was that the child was Athena’s ex’s and this had pissed me off so much for a reason that I was s
ATHENAEven as I sat bound to the chair with a bag over my head impeding my vision, the whole scene at the restaurant kept on playing in my head. I had seen the bullet go through Rachael as she slumped to the ground along with the gun which she had trained to my back. The whole thing had happened so fast and even though I had tried my best to get to Rafael, especially after hearing him screaming my name out loud, I wasn’t able to. I couldn’t get to him before the van pulled up beside me and the men tossed me in. As I sat in the room, I could still feel their presence all around me. I wondered who they were and nobody had bothered to tell me anything ever since we got to wherever this was. They had not spoken to me directly despite all the questions I threw their way. I was in a world where I knew no one and I struggled so hard to comprehend what was going on.I was sure of one thing though, these were completely different people from Rachael’s men. When we first got here, I had though
RAFAELWe all rode in silence as we headed to my house. Rachael was bleeding in the back seat and I had instructed one of my men to tend to her wounds. She kept staring at me without saying a word, but I could tell from the frown on her face that she was not pleased by anything that was going on. When I had offered her my assistance when she lay on the floor bleeding, she had initially tried to fight me. It had not been so much of a fight as her hand was not of so much use. The bullet was still lodged in there and I had already called the family doctor to meet me up at the house to perform a quick removal of it. The wound didn’t look entirely nasty and I was sure she was going to live through it.Hermes was not too pleased about my decision to keep her alive and he made this expressly clear. Even when I tried to place her in the back of the car, he expressly denied and insisted that he was not going to ride with someone who had been responsible for putting his daughter in harm. I coul
