EMILY’S POV

I look up to see the person who came all of a sudden to block this stranger’s path.

Justin.

I’m surprised to see him. Justin is Carlos’ best friend. What’s he doing here?

I freeze as I look at him. My grip tightens around my spoon. His expression is nothing like the friendly Justin I know. His usually calm demeanor is replaced with a look of barely contained anger. His eyes flick between me and the man.

"Emily," he says in a hard tone. "What the hell do you think you’re doing?"

I blink at him, confused. "Excuse me?"

Justin crosses his arms. From the look in his eyes, I could tell he was judging me…hard.

"How could you sit here and have dinner with another man?” he says.

“What do you mean?” I say in confusion “What are you even doing here?”

“I came here to get lunch for myself. To my surprise, I saw you sitting with this guy over here. How could you do this? You’re here having fun while Carlos has been drowning himself in alcohol for days because of you. Don’t you feel gu

EMILY’S POVThe car ride home is tense. It’s filled with the heavy scent of alcohol as Carlos sways beside me, his body radiating heat. His fingers brush against mine, tentative at first, but then he grips my hand as if clinging to something solid in his drunken haze.I sigh, gently pulling away, but he’s persistent.“Emily,” he mumbles. His head lolls to the side, landing heavily on my shoulder.I stiffen. “Carlos, sit up,” I murmur, nudging him, but he only groans in protest.I glance at his face. He looks flushed from the alcohol, and I can’t help but feel worried about him. He never drinks this much. Could it be because he had an argument with Lina? Or was it because of our last fight? When he leans in again, I don’t push him away this time. I let him rest against me, feeling his warmth, his presence. My heart clenches at the memory of better days, when this closeness wasn’t so complicated.By the time we arrive at the house, Carlos is barely able to stand. I drape his arm over my

EMILY’S POVThe warmth surrounding me feels so familiar, so safe, that for a moment, I forget where I am. I blink my eyes open, only to find myself nestled in Carlos’s arms. His scent lingers around me. My heart clenches painfully as I realize how close we are. His breath fans over my forehead and his body is warm against mine. His strong arm is wrapped around my waist, holding me in place as if he never wants to let me go.I swallow hard and slowly tilt my head up, only to find him staring at me. There’s something in his gaze, something unreadable yet so tender that it takes my breath away. It reminds me of the past—of mornings when we’d wake up tangled together. How long has he been staring at me? and why is he?"Good morning," he murmurs. His voice is deep and husky from sleep. The sound wraps around me like silk. His voice alone sends shivers down my spine. It stirs up emotions I wish I could ignore. For a second, I allow myself to bask in the illusion that we’re still us, that we

EMILY’S POVThe air between us is thick as we sit at the dining table. I barely touch my food. Carlos sits across from me. His eyes are filled with exhaustion.I prepared something light for him this morning, knowing alcohol always upsets his stomach. A bowl of oatmeal, a few slices of toast, and some fruit. Nothing greasy. Nothing heavy. He eats mechanically. His jaw is tight and his fingers grip the fork a little too hard.I take a deep breath. "Carlos, we need to talk about the divorce agreement."His hand freezes midair, the fork hovering just above his plate. He exhales sharply and sets it down, rubbing his temples like he already has a headache. "Emily, not now.""If not now, then when? We can’t just keep avoiding this."His jaw clenches. "I’m not avoiding it. These things take time.""I understand that, but we need to decide when we’re telling our families," I press, "My grandmother will ask questions. So will your family. We need to be prepared."He lets out a humorless chuckl

EMILY’S POVI can’t believe Carlos acted like that at the ball. The moment we step into the house, the silence between us is thick and suffocating. Neither of us speaks a word. I don't even spare him a glance as I head straight to my room, shutting the door with more force than necessary. The next morning, I wake up with the events of last night still fresh in my mind. The frustration is still there, but there’s also something else—confusion. I don’t understand why Carlos acted that way, why he seemed so violent.Pushing aside my thoughts, I go through my usual morning routine, determined to act as if nothing happened.Breakfast is a quiet affair. The clinking of utensils against plates is the only sound filling the air. Carlos sits across from me, his expression unreadable as he eats. I refuse to look at him, focusing instead on my plate, even though my appetite is nearly nonexistent. Then, without a word, Carlos reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small box. EMILY’S POVWhen I wake up the next morning, Carlos is nowhere to be found. Again. The cold emptiness of the apartment makes me sad.I sigh, rubbing my temples as I sit at the kitchen table. My fingers absently trace patterns on the wooden surface. My mind keeps drifting back to last night. Not just Carlos storming off ,but also Alexander—the man who, despite everything, had stepped in at the banquet and taken a hit for me.Carlos broke his nose. And now, I can’t help but wonder how he’s doing.I pull out my phone and call Bridget, my friend who was also at the banquet. It rings a few times before she answers.“Emily?” Her voice is laced with curiosity. “What’s up?”“Hey, Bridget. I know this is random, but do you know Alexander?”“Alexander Hamilton? The one your husband beat up last night. What went wrong?”I sigh “It’s a long story. Do you know how he’s doing?”“I heard he was taken to the hospital”My eyes widen in surprise. Poor guy.“Which hospital?” I ask.“I heard he’s at St.

My phone vibrates on the countertop, and when I check, his name flashes on the screen.Carlos: Come to my office. There’s no greeting, no pleasantries. Just a direct command. A part of me should be irritated, but I’m not. Instead, I stare at the message, feeling a strange weight on my chest. This is it—the moment I’ve been waiting for. The moment where I finally get to set him free.I glance at the clock. 11:47 AM. Almost lunchtime. Before I leave, I want to do one last thing for him. I send him a message.Me: Have you eaten? The reply comes almost immediately.Carlos: No.Just like that, my decision is made. My fingers tighten around the phone, and I push away from the counter. There is something triumphant in her gaze, as if she has been waiting for this moment."You poor thing," she sighs, tilting her head as she looks at me. "I almost feel bad for you. Almost."I narrow my eyes at her "What are you talking about, Lina?"She steps closer, lowering her voice. "Carlos and I... we were meant to be together. You do know that, don't you?" Her words drip with false sympathy, and my stomach knots painfully. "If it weren’t for his family—your grandmother, to be precise—he would’ve never married you."My breath catches in my throat. "That’s a lie."She chuckles. "Is it? Let me enlighten you, Emily. Years ago, I was forced to leave Carlos. Not because he wanted me to go, but because his family demanded it. I was sick. Weak. CARLOS' POVThe screen behind me lights up with the final slide of my presentation. It's a clean detailed graph that shows our revenue climbing steadily over the past two quarters. I let the room fall into silence for a few seconds, savoring their anticipation before I speak again."—and if we follow this trend, introducing the Phoenix Expansion Project next month as outlined," I say, "we're projected to increase profits by an additional eighteen percent before the end of the quarter."I click the remote once more. Another graph appears. This one highlights our competitor’s sluggish growth in comparison. Quiet murmurs spread through the boardroom.I glance at the long table, where the board members sit in their dark suits. Some are leaning forward, some sit back with their arms crossed — but all with their eyes glued to me. And then, my gaze drifts to the man at the head of the table — my father. He isn’t leaning forward or sitting stiffly; he is relaxed with a small rare smile tuggin

For a moment, I think I’m seeing things. What the hell is she doing here?My mouth is dry and my heart is hammering so loud I can barely hear anything else. She stands there in the doorway like she owns the place, hips cocked to the side, perfectly manicured nails tapping against her tablet. Her red dress clings to her body like it’s painted on. Her hair falls down her shoulders in perfect, glossy waves.I force my voice to work. "Lina? What... what are you doing here?"“Lina?” Bridget echoes in confusion.Lina smiles. That smug, superior smile she’s perfected so well. It’s like she’s drinking in the chaos she’s just unleashed, savoring it. She catwalks into the room as if she belongs there.Around me, the board members shift uncomfortably. I hear low whispers.Bridget, from the side of the room, mutters under her breath, "Oh, you've got to be fucking kidding me."Victori

EMILY’S POVThe trip to Paris was great. Alexander’s driver drops me off at home. I didn’t have anything to drink but for some reason, I feel hungover.I’m barely through the front door when my phone buzzes again. A maid opens the door for me.“Good day, Miss Emily” she greets.“Hi” I say to her with a smile “How are you?”I go in, slipping out of my shoes, and glance at the screen. It’s an email.I tap it open, expecting another promotional message or maybe something from the clinic — but when I see the subject line, my heart leaps into my throat.Partnership Proposal: Maison de Lune Fashion House.I blink once. DANIEL’S POVI sit at my desk. My fingers are tapping on the table as the monitor in front of me flashes search results. Lina. Lina. Lina. Dozens of articles. Hundreds of names. None of them her. Each time I think I've found a lead, it slips through my fingers like smoke. A "Lina Morales" in Boston — no match. A "Lina M." in Los Angeles — wrong face. Wrong age. I close each tab one after another. With each second, I get more frustrated."She's a ghost," I mutter under my breath. Not even a damn traffic ticket. Not a whisper of scandal. Nothing. And that, in itself, is the biggest red flag of all.Nobody's that clean. Not unless they have a reason to scrub their past.I know nothing about her apart from the fact that she was married which I find absurd.I lean back in my chair, running a hand through my hair. Why are you hiding, Lina? What the hell are you so desperate to erase?I can't shake the feeling — that itching intuition that something big is sitting just beneath the surface, h

CARLOS’ POVThe sun is too damn bright.I squint as I step out of the car, watching Lina prance ahead of me toward the massive baby boutique like she’s heading into a candy store. Her heels click confidently on the pavement and her hand waves behind her as if to say come on, slowpoke. I catch up because I have to—not because I want to.Truth is, I feel like I’ve been dragged here. Like a leash has been tied around my neck, pulling me along with every smile, every “Carlos, this’ll be fun,” As the glass doors slide open, I hear the sound of lullabies inside the store. Everything is shiny. Expensive. The kind of place where cashmere blankets are folded like art and cribs cost more than some people’s rent.“Isn’t it beautiful?” Lina’s voice is sugar. She spins on her heel and takes my hand, tugging me forward. “I’ve been dying to come here.”I give her a faint smile. “Isn’t it a little early to be shopping?”She waves me off. “It’s never too early. We’re gonna be parents, Carlos! We nee

CARLOS’ POVIt’s nearly midnight by the time I pull into the driveway.I don’t move.My hand rests on the steering wheel. My fingers are clenched around it like I’m hanging on to something that isn’t there anymore. I stare at the door. The light above it is on—of course it is. Lina always waits up. Whether it’s out of care, obligation, or suspicion, I still haven’t figured out.I lean back into the seat and close my eyes, trying to breathe through the weight that presses down on my chest.Emily.Her name slips into my thoughts. No matter how hard I try to shove her into some corner of the past, she always finds a way to creep back in. Her laugh. The way she used to greet me at the door in those big, fuzzy slippers with her hair pulled back and a smile that felt like home.God, I’m such a damn idiot.I divorced her. Why?Because it started as a contract. That’s what I keep telling myself. It was supposed to be transactional. Practical. We were never meant to feel anything.Except we do

Emily’s POVThe silk of the green dress shimmers under my fingertips as I smooth it down over my hips. I stare at my reflection one last time. The sweetheart neckline is modest yet elegant. The dress is perfect. Absolutely perfect.I snap a few pictures, biting my lip as I angle my phone just right. Then I hit send—to Bridget and Helen, because of course I have to. Almost immediately, my phone buzzes.Bridget: Girl, are you trying to end him? 😍🔥Helen: You’re a goddess. If he doesn’t faint on sight, I will.I laugh out loud. With one last spritz of perfume and a shaky deep breath, I step into the hallway and make my way down the elevator.Alexander is waiting in the lobby. The moment his eyes land on me, his eyes widen in surprise. He straightens to his full height. His eyes are locked on me like I’m the only woman in the world. EMILY’S POVBack at the hotel, I slip off my shoes and finally exhale. After a quick shower, I pull on an oversized t-shirt Alexander gave me and crawl into the ridiculously soft hotel bed. I grab my phone and snap a couple of photos—the city skyline glowing from the window, the luxurious bathroom, the impossibly fluffy robe hanging on the door.I send them to Bridget and Helen.Bridget replies almost immediately: You’re one kiss away from falling for this man.I snort. Not gonna happen. He’s just… being sweet.Helen sends three heart-eyes emojis. Sweet is a slippery slope.I toss my phone aside and lie back, staring up at the ceiling. The room is quiet. I should feel relaxed, but instead, my mind won’t shut off. I’m grateful, absolutely. This whole surprise trip is thoughtful and generous. But not romantic. Not for me. And yet…I wonder if I’m being unfair. Am I giving Alexander the wrong idea? Should I have drawn a clearer line? He’s sleeping in the next room, probably thinking thi

But the fact that Alexander brought me here is still surprising to me. I mean, what guy takes you on his private jet to Paris all because you were having a stressful time? It says a lot about him and I don’t know how to process it.I rub my belly, smiling down at my child.“Hey baby” I whisper “We’re in Paris”As we step off the plane, the cool night air hits me.
