My mind was racing. If my mom was trying to bind a demon to her or my father, she had to have known someone was after them. They both did. There was no other explanation I could come up with for it.

My parents weren't evil. They wouldn't be dabbling in black magic if they weren’t desperate.

Then again, I also didn't know that at least one of them had magic until now. It seemed that I had a lot to learn about them and a lot to learn about myself. Why was I just now discovering that I had powers?

I pulled away from Demetri, placing one hand on his chest to push him backward and out of the doorway. Having his body so close to mine was making it hard to breathe, let alone think.

"It is obvious you were not the creator of this casting." His voice seemed to darken with curiosity and suspicion. "It seems my little witch has secrets. What were you doing with another witch's spells?"

My head shook on its own as my mouth tried to find the words. I had yet to vocalize the truth past the statement for the police report. "It was my mother's."

I leaned forward just enough that I could take the paper from his hands without him being able to pull me back toward his body and returned it to its rightful place on the podium. It was going to take some time to get this room back in order, especially when I had no idea what half of this stuff was or did.

"I see." Demetri's black eyes watched me cautiously as if expecting me to break down in a flood of emotions. His tense shoulders and back were evidence that he was ready to run at a moment's notice to get away from the tears that I had been holding back. "And what, my little witch, was she in need of that casting for?"

I shook my head as I shrugged my shoulders but otherwise, did not turn to face him. Perhaps it would be easier if he were to just stab me in the back or cut my throat right now. It would save me a lot of pain and anticipation.

When he did not speak, I bent down and picked up a rather large crystal from the ground, placing it on one of the shelves to my right.

Call me a terrible host, but I spent the next two hours picking up the room and trying to organize it to the best of my ability. I was disappointed to not find any recognizable personal items belonging to my parents. While I knew everything in this room was theirs, I had no memory of them with it and was honestly a little scared of it all.

Demetri stood in the doorway, not wavering for even a moment as I flittered about the room. He never once gave a sign or word that he was hungry or thirsty, and I never offered. After the kitchen and what happened when he was explaining the spell, I was terrified to interact with him.

Everywhere I went in the room, I felt his eyes on me. It was like two magnets being held apart but desperately wanting to come together again. The draw to him was abnormal, yet exhilarating.

After the room was in decent enough order, I turned to face the demon in the doorway. It amazed me that even without the whites of his eyes, I could still tell what he was feeling by the way his eyelids narrowed or widened. The downward pull at the corner of his mouth also made it apparent that he was concerned.

Why a demon who was forced here would be concerned for their alleged kidnapper, I would never know.

"I don't know anything about magic, but I promise to do what I can to free you as quickly as possible." I made my way over to the book on the podium and pulled out my phone once more.

The book was several inches thick. I tried not to groan, knowing this would take forever. But, it was my mistake that had forced Demetri here away from his home and responsibilities, and it was my job to fix it.

"You have done enough for today, Seraphina." The use of my name had me looking up. I loved the way each letter of my name rolled off his tongue. "You don't seem to be in a hurry to be released."

His broad shoulders moved up in a casual shrug, but his wary eyes seemed to remain on me. "There is nothing to be done today that can't be done tomorrow."

My eyes narrowed at him, and I knew that there was more to it than he was letting on. "Why? Why are you not wanting to go back? If I were being held against my will, I would want to be on the first plane out of here."

His eyebrows pulled together, and I realized it was probably due to my referencing a piece of machinery that he was not familiar with. Yet, even as adorable as his look of confusion made him, I was still highly suspicious. The word 'mate' echoed through my head, and my stomach formed into a confused knot of butterflies and dread.

"I am in no hurry to return to my realm. There are several matters here that need to be addressed first." He stated calmly as I walked toward him, intending to move past him. I wanted to return to the kitchen to make lunch since I had missed breakfast in the chaos of finding out I was bound to a demon.

"Such as?" I asked as he surprised me and turned on his heels to walk down the stairs before I could approach him. I sped up, wanting to stay close enough that I could hear his response, even with his back to me. The door closed on its own behind me, making me jump, and I eyed it with irritation before chasing after Demetri.

It was going to take some time to get used to things like that happening, but hopefully, I would be able to control it a little better now that I was aware of the magic running through my veins.

"Such as the newfound knowledge that you are in danger." He turned when he reached the end of the staircase and continued down the next flight. "With your inexperience with magic, it is not certain that you will be able to break the connection just by breaking the bond. It would be a terrible shame for me to return home, just to drop dead because someone decided to end you."

His words sent a shiver down my spine, and I stared at his back wide-eyed as I followed him into the kitchen. The black markings on his skin seemed to vibrate against the surface, pulsing like a heartbeat.

While I wasn't happy about his answer, I knew there was more to it than that. "Someone decided to end me, or you decided to end me? And, that is only one reason. You said there were several. What else?"

As he reached the breakfast bar, he pulled out one of the stools and took a seat, his eyes returning to me as I joined him in the room. "I’ve have already told you, that I will not be killing you. The other is that I still need time to convince you that I would also be a worthy and powerful mate."

I did my best to ignore his statement, as well as his eyes as they watched my every move while I searched for my food. He seemed fascinated by what I was doing as I pulled out a premade meal from the fridge and threw it in the microwave."Do you eat?" I asked over my shoulder as I closed the microwave and set the cook time. When there was no response, I began to backtrack in the stupidity of my question. Of course, he ate. He was a living creature after all…at least, I thought he was. "I mean, what would you like to eat? I ordered a few options this week."The timer counted down as the food spun around in the microwave. The lack of response was distracting, and I turned to him, waiting to hear him respond. His black eyes felt hot when I saw them staring at me with an amused smirk on his soft pink lips."I do not sustain myself with that kind of meal." His words left much to the imagination. The image of him ripping into raw meat with his teeth, blood drip

We had to wait two days until my Aunt Isla was back from her trip to Greece. It seemed that even after her sister's murder, she was wanting to continue her trips to exotic locations. It didn't sit well with me, but everyone grieved differently. For her, it appeared that she wanted to stay active in society and travel around the globe.I had seen photos on her social media pages of her out and about over the past two months. Besides a phone call to see how I was holding up a month after I found the bodies, the funeral, and the visits to the lawyer's office to settle the will, I hadn't heard much from her.She had seemed irritated by the fact that she hadn't been left with anything, but when I asked her afterward, she stated that it was just how the family worked. She said she had expected it. Everything was passed down to the next generation, always. Not only was she linear to my parents, but she had no kids of her own.If she needed to get away and be alone to g

The looming white house was in pristine condition, with bright green vines growing along the side, covering from the dirt to the roof. The clean-cut lawn and perfectly trimmed rose bushes matched her personality. Bright and bubbly, with high standards.Everything she wore or owned, had to be top of the line. If it wasn’t name brand, it was personally designed just for her. Every time she visited my parent’s house, she would spend a solid hour a day nit-picking everything my parent’s owned or pushing them to hire help. She loved that, calling them ‘the help’. To her, other people existed in the world to serve her and her materialistic needs.I scanned the surrounding area one last time before moving toward the front door and pressing the bell. Nerves swarmed me as I was filled with a sense of deja vu. I could sense darkness in the house, something I had never been able to do before. There was something inside the house made me feel n

My tongue was tied as I stared at my aunt. Her lively summer dress and perfectly styled hair were contradictory to the words leaving her lips. Magic, let alone dark magic, still seemed so foreign. It didn't help that the only proof I had was the demon permanently bound to me. I had yet to see it for myself, let alone knowingly cast it. Perhaps this was all a hallucination from the stress and trauma I had endured when my parents died. I shook my head as I debated reality. The cup in my hand began to tremble against the saucer it was on as I began to shake. The sound of the porcelain clicking together filled the room. "Are you telling me that my parents thought I would grow up to be evil?" It was both a compliment and an insult at the same time. To be so powerful that I would be a threat, and yet, so untrustworthy that they would hide my powers from me, even as a baby. None of it made sense to me. How could you take a gift like that away from your own child? How could you not trust y

The trip back home was quiet. Demetri looked ready to kill me when I told him that I didn't ask my Aunt how to break the bond. I understood his anger, but I also knew it was for the best. He wanted to be free, but he also wanted it to happen after he found a way to trick me into being with him. There was just something about her or someone in her house that I didn't trust.I immediately made my way to the kitchen for a cold glass of water, needing a moment away from the brooding and dangerous man following behind me."This conversation is not over, my little witch." He growled out. I had been ignoring him most of the car ride, just needing time to think. How would I find answers now unless I sold myself to the devil and made a deal with one of Demetri's contacts? "You state that you could not trust her. If she is the threat, we need to eliminate her as soon as possible."I shook my head and placed the glass down on the counter. "It's not that simple, and

I received an unhealthy amount of pleasure watching Demetri squirm as we walked around the grocery store. After making him sit in the car while I purchased some clothes for him, I finally got him into normal-looking attire. It was fascinating to watch just how much he disliked it.The first shirt I got him in burned up, right off his body. He literally set it on fire without as much as a flick of his wrist. It reminded me that I also needed to get a new dresser or sand down the mark he had left behind when he first spoke to me in my bedroom. I had thought it was just dirt at first, but after a closer look it turned out to be scorch marks across the polished surface. After several tries, and his refusal to let me enter the store without him again, he finally gave in. His soccer dad look kind of worked for him, in an 'I'm going to rip your head off if you mess with my kid' kind of way. The constant sunglasses he wore, even inside the building, ca

"Ms. Hastings, that is a very serious accusation." Detective Sullivan grumbled at me, not seeming to care about the fact that I had just been in a car accident. His biggest concern was that I had ordered him out here and disrupted his day off. "I understand that! That doesn't change the fact that my parents were murdered a couple months ago, and now my brakes were tampered with!" My voice rose, and multiple heads turned. It seemed the police department thought it important to send out an extra patrol car or two since my family was one of their largest donors. Of course, I was considering cutting back on our annual donation the longer it went with a lack of attention on my parent's case. "We will need to have your vehicle inspected before we can make the claim that this was attempted murder." He added, and my jaw tightened. "And when will that be done? "You appear troubled." Demetri's voiced from where he stood in the doorway, breaking me from my thoughts, and I turned to face him. I rolled my eyes. Demons. They just didn't get it. "Yes, most people become troubled when someone tries to kill them." My voice was thick with sarcasm, and he narrowed his eyes at my tone. "That is not something I am familiar with. I am normally on the other side of this." His right eyebrow lifted, and a cough rattled through my chest in surprise. Did he just make a joke? The corner of his mouth twitched as I stared at him. "Ah, of course. How could I forget? You're the hunter, not the hunted." "See, now you're getting it." He gestured his head for me to follow him out of the attic. One Month Later"I'm sorry it didn't work," Meredith said from the seat next to me as I stared out the window, watching the passing desert to the side as we sped down the highway. "We'll find another way."We had tried everything short of digging a hole down to the underworld. A séance had fallen flat with a minor demon coming through instead, trying to have a little fun in the world of the living, only for them to immediately regret it when both Meredith and I put them in their place and shut the connection on them."It's okay. If he wanted to, he would have come back by now, at least to visit. Shit, he could have even sent Akuji to give me a message, but no. There has been nothing. Maybe I should just let it go." Meredith reached over and grabbed my hand, squeezing it."You can still try summoning him back." She offered, but I shook my head quickly."And risk either binding a different demon to me or end up forcing a man back into my life who doesn't want to be a part of it, to begi

Demetri's P.O.V.I groaned as I rolled over, feeling the heat of the sun on my bare back. Flashes of red with a large man towering over me came to mind. I watched as he smiled, the long pointed teeth seeming familiar but still unsettling to me. The large horns on his head were unlike anything that I had ever imagined."You wish to return?" He said his voice like a multilayered growl. I bowed my head respectfully as he stared down at me with amusement."Yes, Sire.""You have fallen in love with a human? That makes you useless to me." I held my head down as his voice grew louder, signaling that he was getting closer. It didn't matter how powerful I was. He was stronger than anything to be found in any realm.I could feel my magic pulsing beneath my skin as he drew near.Suddenly, a large splash of cold liquid doused my body, and I sputtered as I spit the mud from my mouth."Is he drunk?" Demetri's P.O.V. I couldn't say what I was feeling when I was ripped away from my mate and brought back to the home I had come to peace with never seeing again. It was true that I had missed my home, but as I was being torn away from Seraphina, I knew I would give my home up in a heartbeat for a life with her in it. I had fallen to my knees in the barren field that surrounded my castle. The loose dirt shifted beneath my weight as I realized that I couldn't help her. Time worked differently here. There was no way of saying if she was still in battle, if it was months later, or if she was even still alive. I could go to her, and visit the human realm again, but it would take time. By the guards quickly surrounding me, I knew I would be stuck here for the foreseeable future. There was no escaping notice now. "Your highness! You've returned!" One of the guards stated. The obvious announcement sent frustration through me. My wings broke free from my back as I took my true form. My nail

I moved slowly, keeping my hands down at my sides until I took my seat. He remained outside the room until I placed my hands, palm down, on the metal tabletop. After a moment, he came in and joined me, his watchful gaze staying down on my hands."I brought you some blueberry muffins. I hope you like that flavor. If not, I can bring you something else later." Even though he didn't respond, I still felt hope since he was willing to sit down and hear me out. "Detective, you saved my life, and I am eternally grateful for that. I don't know how to repay you, and I know nothing will be equal to the debt that I now owe you, but I will do my best to try."He looked quickly up from my hands to my face before back down again. "I like blueberry." He mumbled beneath his breath, and I let out a sigh of relief."They told me your kids have been coming to visit. I didn't know you had kids. How old are they?" His shoulders dropped slightly, and I could see him relaxing as he thought of his family. I

The hallway she brought me down was eerie and off-putting. The white walls were bare, and the off-white laminate flooring was scuffed and dirty. We passed several doors, but no people. I continued forward. My anxiety got significantly worse when a man in a lab coat rounded the corner ahead of us before turning off into one of the rooms, only for me to discover it was an office as we walked past. It made sense that they wouldn't keep their patients in the front of the building, but the fact that they had to keep them here against their will at all made me feel nauseous. "Is Detective Sullivan doing okay today?" I asked, and the woman looked over her shoulder at me with a small smile. There was a tightness in the corner of her eyes that told me I wouldn't be able to take her words at face value. "He hasn't been here long but is doing a little better every day." She lifted her hand, gesturing me to turn to the right as we reached the end of the hallway. There was another door we had to

It was amazing how quickly I recovered. Meredith had brought me a thermos of tea every day until I was released from the hospital. All I knew was that I needed to get far enough away from Isla that I could come up with a plan without her being able to hit me.The sound of the scuffle behind me made me pause, and I knew I couldn't just leave Demetri there. He was my mate. I loved him, and I would be damned if I let her take him from me without a fight. As I spun on my heels, there was a loud crash, and I looked up in horror to see she had thrown Demetri against the side of the house. The surface cracked and caved in from the impact. He flopped onto the ground, limp and unmoving. Instead of a scream of horror, a shriek of rage bubbled up. Isla looked over at me, a look of satisfaction on her face.
