What the hell is he doing here again?

We all stood up to welcome him as he entered the room, each of us eager to make a good impression. I felt my heart race as his gaze swept across the group, finally resting on me. His expression was blank, as if I were just another face in the crowd. Seriously?

“Welcome, everyone,” he said, his voice smooth and authoritative, as he gestured for us to take our seats.

I swallowed hard, my pulse quickening Why was my heart racing so fast?

My boss cleared his throat. “Thank you for being here today, Sir Astor. I’m excited to discuss potential collaboration with your company.” My boss said and Jake nodded, his eyes studying the room.

As the meeting commenced, I tried to focus on the presentation, but my mind kept lingering to the past, the moment I woke up beside him, the way he walked out on me.

'What were the chances?' I had shared something intimate with this man, and now he was sitting across from me as if we were merely colleagues. It's obvious he sleeps with different ladies, because why the hell does he not remember me?

“Every partnership needs to ensure mutual benefit,” he said, his tone steady and confident as he turned to my boss. “I’m interested in what your team can bring to the table.”

My boss turned to me and I felt my breath cease. “Alice, why don’t you present our recent market analysis? You’ve been working closely on this project.” Perfect. Just perfect.

“Sure,” I replied, my voice steady despite my nervousness and the whirlwind of thoughts in my head.

I stood up, clutching my notes tightly, and began to speak. As I detailed our findings, I could feel his gaze on me, but it was different now—observant but distant. Like he still didn't recognize who i was.

“...and we believe these insights could significantly impact our strategies moving forward,” I concluded, trying to maintain my composure. I glanced at him, searching for any hint of recognition, but his expression was neutral, as if he were listening to just a random employee.

“Very insightful,” he said, nodding. “I appreciate your analysis, Alice. It’s clear you know your stuff.”

A rush of warmth spread through me at his compliment, but it was tinged with disappointment. 'Did he really not remember me?'

JAKE ASTOR'S POV.

I walked into the room, my eyes landing on a familiar figure. Her. The one girl who I had prayed never to come across again. Ever since I walk out of that house, I can't seem to get her off my mind. It's weird that I don't know why.

Maybe it's because I feel bad for her. Her husband dumping her for her bestfriend. How cruel is that? Or maybe it's the sex. The way she moaned, Her soft delicate skin, the sound of her gentle voice mixed with her alcoholic breath, or maybe it was her slow movement. No! Get it together.

I walk into the the conference room, my eyes leaving her to the rest of the people in the room who had stood up to welcome me. I can't afford to let my guards down.

ALICE'S POV.

The meeting came to a close, my boss practically buzzing with excitement. We had a chance to close a deal with one of the wealthiest and most successful CEOs in Los Angeles. That was a big deal, and I should have felt proud.

“I'll definitely get back to you. It's nice to see you Mr George,”

“I will be waiting on you, Mr Astor. Oh! And it's nice to see you too,” I overheard both their conversations as I step out of the door, my file clutched to my chest as my mind raced with thoughts.

Why do I have to feel bad? I mean, what was I expecting? I clearly told Mia i didn't care about who he was, and I never thought of seeing him again. Bu—but, why do I feel this way? Why do I feel heartbroken?

******

It was closing time already. I began to pack my items from the table, putting them into my black handbag. I zipped my bag closed but hesitated, unzipping it again to retrieve my lip gloss. I wasn’t a makeup expert, but I loved the way my lips looked shiny. it was a thing for me.

As I stepped outside, waiting for my cab, a sleek white Bugatti pulled up in front of me. The window slid down, revealing Mr Jake once more.

What the hell is he doing here again?

“Get in,” he said, his tone firm. I raised an eyebrow, caught off guard by his abruptness. “Excuse me,” I shot back at him. “I said get in,” he repeated, his tone unyielding. “Why do you have to be arrogant about—?” I couldn't even finish my statement when he drove off, just like he had the first time. What the hell is wrong with him? It wasn’t long before he reversed the car, pulling back toward me. “It’s late; let me drop you off,” he said, rolling his eyes as if my presence was a disturbance to him. Even though I didn't ask him for a ride. But despite the stunt he had just pulled —and the one he had pulled weeks ago—I found myself slipping into the passenger seat. He turned the car around and drove off. While in the car, he said nothing, his focus on the road. I tried to speak, but my tongue felt heavy. What should I possibly say? “Uhmm, you didn’t respond to my question the other day at my house,” I finally said, breaking the silence. “What question?” he asked, his brows

I hesitated, staring at Ethan’s name flashing on my screen. My heart raced. What did he want now? I watched as the call ended, hoping that would be the last of it. But then it began ringing again. I rolled my eyes in annoyance; the ringtone seeming louder than usual, as if urging me to answer. Taking a deep breath, I picked up, trying to keep my voice steady. “Hello?” “Alice,” he said, his tone sharp. “What do you want?“ I asked. “Who was that guy you were with at the restaurant?” I frowned, taken aback by his question. “Why does it matter to you? We’re done, remember?” “I just want to know. Tell me who he is,” he pressed. “You didn’t mention you were seeing someone.” “Look, it’s none of your business,” I shot back, frustration boiling over. “You lost that right when you decided to cheat on me with my best friend.” “Alice, wait—” he began, but I cut him off. “Goodbye, Ethan.” I hung up, my heart pounding in my chest. What was that about? How dare he? The next day, I sat in

I took a deep breath, willing myself to regain composure. “Alice! Are you okay?!“ The sound of Jake’s voice was filled with concern. I leaned against the sink, staring at my reflection as if it held the answers I desperately needed. My heart raced, and my mind spiraled with questions. What if I was pregnant? I wiped my mouth again, the metallic taste lingering. I couldn't afford to let this thought consume me—not now, not when everything was so fucking uncertain. “Congratulations, Mrs. Alice, you’re pregnant!” The words kept looping in my head all night. I tried to force myself to sleep, but I couldn’t. Not even my sleeping pills helped.I woke up the next day feeling weak and exhausted. I hadn’t slept at all; instead, I cried until dawn.---It was Saturday, and Mia had come over as usual. We sat across from each other in the living room, watching TV when I heard her voice.“Alice, you don’t look good today. Is everything okay?” Mia asked, breaking me out of my thoughts.I hadn’t told her yet. In fact, there was no way I could tell her now. I wasn’t sure I could handle her judgments, let alone whether she was ready for the burden that was about to befall us.Growing up in the orphanage, I remembered the first day she arrived. She looked pale and sick because she had been crying for days. At six, she lost her parents in an explosion; luckily, she had been at school when it happened. She didn’t even get the chance to say goodbye.I remember wal

Taking a deep breath, I walked toward him, my heart racing.“Good day, Mr. Jake,” I greeted, attempting to sound casual. “What brings you here?”He smiled, a charming smile that made my insides flutter. “Can I come in?”I hesitated, my mind racing. Would he notice? The pregnancy was still in its early stages; maybe he couldn’t tell. Just as I was about to say yes, Mia chimed in from behind me.“Yes! You can come in!” she exclaimed, her eyes wide with admiration as she took in Jake’s good looks. I turned to her, momentarily stunned by her enthusiasm.Mia had always had a thing for handsome men, and Jake was no exception. I felt a mix of awe and annoyance, but I couldn’t blame her. I returned to the living room with two cups of coffee on a tray.He sat slouched back on my couch, legs crossed, his phone in his hands as he scrolled through it.When he noticed me approaching, he sat up, a smile on his face that made his green eyes light up.God! I hadn’t had the time to sit back and reflect on how a man could be this beautiful and yet so nonchalant about it. It was almost unfair.Maybe he did know; there was no way he wouldn’t. But the fact that he didn’t act like he knew made him even more charming. He was absolutely stunning.I placed the tray on the coffee table. He dropped his phone by his side and reached forward to take a cup while I took mine as well.I settled into a seat just across from him, watching closely to see if he liked it.He blew some air into the cup before taking a sip. My brows raised as I waited for his reaction.“Hmmmn,” he groaned, “nice coffee,” he complimented. I smiled at him, contented with his reaction, before taking a sip from mine.“

It felt like I had crossed an invisible line, and now I was the one feeling awkward. Was I pushing him too much? His body language shifted; he leaned back, arms crossing over his chest. It was a sign that he didn’t want to dive into that part of his life. And i wasn't ready to push him either.“Sorry, I didn’t mean to pry,” I said, my voice softening as I searched his expression. “You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”His eyes flickered back to mine, and he nodded slowly, a small smile returning. “Thanks. ALICE'S POV. TWO WEEKS LATER: It was Saturday, two weeks later. I sat alone in the living room, Seated on my couch, watching TV. But despite the show playing my mind drifted away from it, lost in thoughts of Jake. Why hadn’t I heard from him in two weeks? The Thought of it made me confused and anxious at the same time.
