"When I see your faces next week, it had better be with your completed projects!" Miss Janelle said just as the bell went off for recess and everyone scrambled out of class and headed to the cafeteria.
Leigh took her time packing her bags, until the class was empty of students. Then, she walked up to Miss Janelle's table where the older woman was arranging files.
"Miss Janelle?"
The History teacher's eyes snapped up, surprised that a student stayed back after the bell had called for freedom. She knew most students didn't like her class as they preferred 'new stuff' to 'old stuff' but she loved her job and was bent on making her students see the beauty of the past. Hence, the project she had given them a couple of weeks ago, on Korean culture.
"Yes....."
"Leigh." Leigh prompted. "Leigh Raeken. Newly transferred," she continued in a bored tone.
"Right, Leigh. How may I help you?"
"I wanted to submit this." She pulled a blue file out of her cheery pink backpack and handed it to the teacher. "My history project." She explained when the teacher looked seemingly confused.
"Ah... you're done already?" There was a tinge of uncertainty and amusement in the teacher’s frilly voice.
"Yes ma'am." Leigh replied and turned to exit the classroom. She had gotten the printed question during her tour earlier in the week and completed the project within two days. Her grades were not the problem; they never had been. She had always been among the top of the class right from junior school and would’ve graduated with an amazing record if she hadn’t been transferred at the peak of high school.
Not wanting to think of the unfortunate events that led up to her transfer, Leigh shrugged off the sudden feeling of sadness and stepped out into the hallway.
The hallways were deserted just like she had wanted them to be. She wasn't one to eat in the cafeteria and always brought her lunch pack from home. She was heading towards the fields to find someplace cool and quiet to eat when she heard someone calling her name.
At first, she thought she was mistaken or had heard wrong as not many people knew her name with her being a transfer student and all.
"Leigh!!"
The voice sounded like it was coming from somewhere down the hall she had just come out from. Yet, she didn't know who it belonged to. Curiously, she stopped and waited for whoever it was to catch up to her.
She wasn't overly surprised though, when the person eventually turned out to be Mr. Hotshot.
"Hey," He greeted, coming to stand in front of her. "You walk pretty fast." His voice sounded just a little bit breathless and had Leigh wondering how long he had been chasing after her. Still, she didn't reply.
"Where are you heading to? The cafeteria is the other way." He pointed out, seemingly oblivious or not caring that she had not even acknowledged him.
Leigh rolled her eyes under her hoodie. He was going to have to try harder than that to get a response from her. She almost jumped out of her skin when suddenly, his face filled her vision. She hadn't even noticed that he was standing that close to her or that he had crouched to her eye level. Now, she could practically inhale him.
"Hi there beautiful." He said to her face, sporting an easy smile.
Leigh, uncomfortable with his closeness, took a step back and then another trying to put as much distance as possible between them. Willis however, aware of her retreat, advanced further until he had her backed up against a wall.
"I don't believe we have been properly introduced Miss Raeken. I'm Willis. Willis Reeler and it’s my pleasure to meet you." He was beaming at her now, long fingers stretched out, demanding a handshake.
Leigh felt a familiar tremor run through her body. The kind she felt when she was irritated at something like she currently was with Willis' cheesy moves. Her head still bent low, she did her best to make her voice sound nervous and shaky. Bad boys and players always fell for the shy girl. It was one theory she had researched and confirmed herself.
"I..I'm L-lei-igh."
"What? I can't hear you," he leaned in, so that his hot minty breath fanned her face.
"Leigh." She said, her voice a little bit stronger.
"There. That wasn't so hard." He commented, "Now, where were you heading to?"
"T..the field." She replied, trying her best to keep irritation out of her voice.
"Aren't you going for recess?"
She brought up the brown paper bag in her hand and practically shoved it in his face.
"You're going to eat in the fields?"
She nodded.
"Leigh, that is what cafeterias are for. Come on, let’s go." He grabbed her hand and drag--pulled her along with him back inside not listening to her mental string of protests.
Willis couldn't stop thinking of how small her hand was underneath the hoodie she wore. He felt like all he was pulling along with him was bones. She was so tiny and frail that he thought if he rattled her well enough, she would crumble and turn to dust. The thought had him slowing down his pace to match hers and releasing his death grip on her wrist since she had not even made any move to resist him.
He took a cautious look back at her. Though most of her face was still covered in the hoodie, he could tell she was displeased by how he was pulling her along.
Willis closed his eyes and sighed. Brilliant way to woo a girl Reeler. He berated himself. No girl wanted to be manhandled. He of all people should know that.
"Leigh?" He stopped and turned to face her. "Do you wanna go to the cafeteria? We could eat someplace else."
Now he's asking. Leigh scoffed inwardly. After dragging her half across the school. She weighed her options. Going back with him to the fields would mean both of them alone together. Not a wise decision on her part. Going with him to the cafeteria would mean being seen with him by the whole school. It would also make him feel like he had her wrapped around his little finger. Brilliant plan.
"C-cafeteria is good. I-I guess." She made a show of shrugging lightly.
"Do you always stutter when you talk?" He asked, one brow raised in question.
"No," She spat out a little too sharply. Then decided she would have to downplay her nervous act a little so Mr. Hotshot wouldn't suspect a thing. Not that he would ever find out her quest to break his heart but he might suspect that her 'shy girl' act was all a facade.
Quick to temper aren't we? Willis thought as he gave her a nod and resumed walking down the hall to the cafeteria. Good to know the Shy girl doesn't like been called shy. This was going to be a very satisfying Play. He smiled to himself.
The aroma of different delicacies hit Leigh the minute Willis pushed open the double doors of the cafeteria. At least Muddy had the decency to serve good food, she thought observing food trays as she walked past them.
The cafeteria itself wasn’t too bad either, it was set in standard school style much like how her previous school had been too. Each round table housed six chairs but had enough space to take up to ten when squeezed together. They were in varying colours of blue, green and white. The blue, Leigh quickly noticed, was occupied by the Juniors, the green by the nerds and 'unpopular' kids. This she could tell by the lack of vibe and number of empty chairs.
There had to be students like her who didn’t like eating in the cafeteria after all. She concluded, walking quietly behind Willis until they came to the white tables.
Now, Leigh thought, this was the lair of those who considered themselves the kings and queens of the school.
This, was where Willis was dragging her to. Most of the tables were already occupied by rich looking kids some of them typing away at their iPhones, others picking at their food or probably talking about whose Dad was richer or who bought the latest limited edition shoes.
Leigh couldn’t stop herself from scoffing. In her opinion, they were highest circle of delinquents.
She spotted the cheerleaders pretty fast given their uniform blonde hair -- yes, all of them had dyed their hair a shocking blonde-- and super tight crop top over jeans. Leigh wondered how anyone could breathe over something that tight, confining and damaging to the ribcage. She was still stewing over the damages of super tight tops to the ribs when she noticed one of the cheerleaders glaring at her.
Oh! Not one. All of them were literally throwing eye daggers at her. She followed their eyesight and discovered that they were really focused on where Willis' hands were clasped around hers.
Then, it dawned on her. They were jealous. Every single one of the girls were jealous and she could bet they were all dying to be in her shoes. The prospect made her want to throw back her hooded head and laugh. Laugh at their narrow immature minds. They should be grateful to her. Grateful that she was going to help them rid a player once and for all. Be happy that when she was done with him, he wouldn't have it in him to hurt anyone ever again. But then, they did not know what she was up to. They only saw what she wanted them to see. Willis' latest conquest. Oh, she was going to have so much fun this November. She snickered underneath her hood.
Finally, Willis stopped in front of a white table this one slightly bigger than the others and specifically designed for the basketball players. The striped brown ball sitting proudly on the table announced that just fine. Willis, oblivious or unconcerned about the stares and whispers directed their way, cleared his throat loudly till he had the attention of all his teammates at the table.
"Guys, this is Leigh Raeken or as you all know her, the new transfer student. Leigh, meet Saints Academy's basketball team."
Immediately, the table was filled with male voices calling out greetings to her.
"Hi there."
"What's up,"
"Yo!"
"Sup."
"Pleased to meet you."
"Welcome."
"Hi," She said simply when they were done. Lifting her head up slightly so they could make out her face under the hood.
"Sit next to me and Jer here." Willis said, pulling out a chair for her in a gesture that could only be described as sweet. Leigh however, didn't fall for it. Still, she smiled briefly at him before plopping down on the sit and placing her paper bag on the little space left on the table. Leigh didn’t have to look twice at the messy table to know that the boys had started lunch and they were giant eaters.
"Hi Leigh," A dark haired, dark skinned cute guy sitting to Leigh's right greeted in a warm voice. "I'm Jer, best friend to this knucklehead over here." He gestured extensively to Willis who was seated to Leigh's left.
Ah, so this was the Jer. The one with whom Willis had made the bet. "Hi Jer," She replied in a small voice and shook his outstretched hand. His hands were cold. Unlike Willis' which had been warm and big enough to swallow her small ones. This thought brought her back to the fact that she shouldn't be thinking of Willis' anything except his heart which was long overdue for heartbreaks.
"So tell me Leigh," one of the guys, a dark blonde this time, queried as she unpacked a sandwich from her paper bag. "Do you have a fetish for hoodies? I mean, you're always in one." He smirked playfully as the other guys around the table murmured words in agreement.
Always in one? Dude, I have barely been in the school three times. She rolled her eyes inwardly, careful to keep here expression blank.
"Or... could be you don't want us to see your beautiful face. Yeah?" Another of the guys said and earned claps on the back from his teammates.
"Guys!" One word from Willis had the table silent. It was one of the perks of being captain. He'd been watching her unpack her bag and was mildly surprised when she'd only pulled out a sandwich. No wonder she was all bones. He'd also noticed how her hand shook slightly when Cole had asked the question.
"Leigh here is a shy one." He explained in a steely voice that also clearly said 'She's mine, jackasses back off!' "She'll show her face when she chooses so don't throw questions at her. We good?"
"Yeah man."
"Whatever you say."
Most of the guys simply shrugged and acted like they'd lost interest in her after Willis had not-so-subtly claimed her for himself. Time to turn the tables around, Leigh thought, and show the bad boy a glimpse of what exactly he was dealing with.
"Actually," she began, her voice losing all hints of shyness. "I don't have a fetish for hoodies. I simply prefer them to other clothing." She made a show of pulling down her hood and lifting her curls away from her face.
"Whoa." If the guys ogling reaction was to go by, then her quick trip to the ladies to brush up her make up before heading out for lunch was a good idea.
"What?" She made an innocent face. "Omg! Do I have something in my hair?"
"No babe. Your hair is just fine. All of you is in fact fine." The blonde guy replied her not trying to hide the fact that he was checking her out.
Disgusting as it was, Leigh noticed that Willis had gone stiff and cold beside her like he had been dunked in ice then complimented herself for having done a very good job when he ground out a single icy word. "Cole."
"So you must be Cole then," She addressed the blonde guy who had questioned her. "I'm Leigh but you already knew that." She let out a breezy laugh.
"Yeah, I'm Coleman actually but everyone calls me Cole." He responded, still checking her out. She batted her eyelashes at him before moving her gaze to Jer.
"How long have you been Willis' best friend?" She asked him, careful not to act too curious. She knew she could have asked Willis himself but it was all part of her plan. 'Pretend to be interested in him by giving attention to another guy.' It worked all the time in bruising egos.
"Since sixth grade. We were both not so happy to be starting school then. Threw a fit and fists that had the teacher running out screaming for help. We've been friends ever since."
"That's awesome. So you're like practically brothers." She made sure her voice rose a pitch when she said 'brothers'.
"You could say that. What about you Leigh, where did you transfer from?" Jer asked suddenly.
He was a quick learner and a smart one, Leigh had to hand him that as she chewed slowly on her sandwich, drawing out her reply. Thankfully, the bell rang for end of lunch time just before she could answer.
"I'm sorry guys, but duty calls." She apologized and quickly left the table grabbing her paper bag along.
"I've never seen anyone that eager to get to class." Jer commented after she'd left.
"Not everyone has your lazy ass bruh." Cole told him, punching his shoulder lightly as he rose to leave the table like the rest of the guys already were. "See you at practice man."
"Yo! You okay?" Jer turned to his best friend who hadn't said a word since Leigh had started talking.
"Yeah man, I thought you said she was shy." He accused, almost pouting.
"Apparently she isn't. Is that a pout I hear in your voice?" Jer joked.
"Lay off man." Willis swatted Jer's hands away from his face.
"Come on bruh, we gotta get to class."
"Yeah, class sucks." But didn't suck as much as how he had felt when Leigh had suddenly transformed from Shy to Sexy in a millisecond.
Finally, classes were over. It was time to go back to her somewhat normal life as a teenager. One who didn't have to pretend to be someone else to the whole damned school. Leigh hurriedly packed her bags and skipped out of the school grounds amidst the flood of students. It was early November yet the sun still shone bright and hot like it had no intention of paving the way for winter. Then again, Leigh thought, raising a hand to wipe the droplets of sweat trailing down her forehead, the weather here was never predictable. She couldn’t wait to be out of the fiery heat and into her much cooler and quieter room. Students here at Muddy were loud. Scratch that, extra loud and lousy. As if to prove her point, a group of boys ran past her nearly knocking her down, shouting and laughing at the top of their voices. Yeah, Leigh affirmed to herself, she so couldn’t wait to be back home. Most of all, she couldn't wait to get on the phone with Thea, her best friend and fill her in on all the d
The rest of the week went by uneventfully for Leigh. She hardly saw Willis at all except the few times he would suddenly pop up behind her, say his greetings and disappear again. Leigh had a feeling he was laying it low till the party and she could barely wait for him to make his next move. Finally, the long awaited Saturday came. She had gotten up early, well much earlier than she did on weekends to get her things in order and by ‘her things’ her hair was the major problem. The curls just wanted to be let loose and bounce around as freely as they’d like. “Well, not today,” She told her curls through the mirror and mercilessly ran a hot comb through it again. Thea would be meeting her at her place in an hour's time so they could both prepare for the party. When Thea had asked if Willis would be picking them up, she had replied negative. He hadn’t even bothered to ask where she lived. He had however, later that week dropped a scribbled add
The house where the party was hosted was a huge contemporary mansion that stood out proudly among the neighboring houses and flanked by the tall heads of Oak trees. The blaring music which could be heard from several miles away had Leigh sympathizing with the many eardrums in the process of being damaged and preparing her own eardrums too to be damaged. Willis turned around the circular driveway several times before finding a spot in between two poorly parked cars. Then led the girls up and into the party proper. It was barely past seven and the place was already packed with practically everyone from school. One could barely take two steps without colliding with someone walking sloppily or being pressed against bodies of people who were either making out or dancing. Most people were already in the large outdoor pool, not caring that they were splashing water everywhere. Others were hanging around in groups, drinking a liquid substance from a red cup which Leigh suspected was booze an
The next morning, Leigh woke up to the chirps of birds as they sang out their lovely melodies, a god awful smell that was suspiciously like that of...burnt toast?Groaning, she rolled out and hit the floor with a hrummph, covers and all. Judging by how thick the smell was and that it had wafted through her closed doors, Leigh had no doubt that the kitchen would look a complete mess courtesy of her mother. Now, Samantha might be a whiz at adding up numbers but adding the right quantity of ingredients to make the perfect recipe was not her strongest suite hence, the kitchen failure. One thing was for sure though, be it adding up numbers or cooking terribly, Samantha never gave up on anything. She always believed that the longer she tried, one day she would get it. It was a notion that had Leigh subjected to weekends of terrible food and Samantha to another broken relationship. The thought of relationships had her thinking back to the party the previous night. It had been clear that Wil
Apart from the wild number of balloons and flowers on her doorstep, Leigh had not heard nor seen hide or hair of Willis since the party on Saturday night. Now it was Monday morning which also meant school. Unlike most high school teenagers who always grumbled about school and not wanting to go to school, Leigh actually loved attending school. The very act of waking up morning every morning, preparing for school, attending classes, taking notes, doing assignments, projects, pop quizzes, everything. She enjoyed the routine and rigor of school life and it didn't bother her in the least that she was attending school with a whole bunch of pretenders and assholes who only cared for themselves. Leigh had never for once in her sixteen years of schooling, encountered bullies. She had always stood straight with her head held high and given whoever crossed her path a piece of her mind which was a lot. The last guy who had tried, was much to her satisfaction, not going to be walking for the next
The student body of Saints Academy parted like the Red Sea to Willis' tall, handsome frame as its six foot of male and muscle made its way gracefully towards Leigh's homeroom. He had barely waited until practice was over before sprinting out, still in his uniform, to search for her.Her. He had been surprised when she had come to practice earlier, certain that she had come for him. He had even started to think back to that morning and if she had left anything behind in his car that she might want to retrieve. His surprise had tripled when she had instead, called for Cole. When she totally ignored him and called Cole out, his blood had boiled in his veins and not from the toil of practice. He could feel the simmer of heat slowly awaken now as he came closer to her homeroom. He needed to ask her, needed to hear from her what her business with Cole was. Was she interested in him? He saw red. No, he told himself very calmly, she couldn't be involved with Cole. Of all people, Cole was an o
By the time Willis got to the car, Leigh was nowhere to be found. For a second, he felt a cold reeling sensation lick at his gut. Had she left? She had been really willing to let him take her to that ice cream shop. Had she changed her mind and then decided to leave? He had not known her long enough to know if she would take spontaneous actions like that but he really hoped she hadn't. Maybe she had been tired of standing in the sun and had gone to find shade somewhere. Yes, that had to be it he thought, going around the length of his Chevy with hopes that he might get a glimpse of wherever she went to. "Looking for someone?" Willis almost jumped at the sound of her voice. He had not heard her come up behind him. She really had quiet feet he was thinking now as he turned to face her. She was standing with her back to the sun, her face cast in the late afternoon shadows. The wind had blown her hair out of its ponytail so that it was now dancing f
It was already dark by the time Willis parked his Chevy in the underground parking lot of his sister's apartment. Since he had a falling out with his parents, which had involved a lot of shouting, broken china and a furious storming out, he had taken to living with his sister Willa in her fancy apartment right at the edge of town. Like him, Willa had also been tired of their parents 'bullshit' as she liked to put it and had decided to live alone. Willa Reeler was a twenty-four year old certified lawyer who worked at a reputable law firm with the dream of one day owing hers. She was usually busy most of the time, had practically thrown herself into work when she had left their parent’s house and so gave Willis the space and freedom to do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. Willa's only rules were one, no partying in her house and two, no touching of her beloved Ferrari. They were rules that Willis could live with, not that he did not want so badly to test his hand at the F

She ran. Even when her heart broke into shards and all she wanted to do was scream and scream, She ran. Past the elevators, past the gate, onto the busy streets, yet she kept on running. She could hear him behind her, the heavy footsteps that pounded the pavement just behind her could be none other than his, So she ran. She would not let him catch up with her, she would not let herself be drawn back into his arms. She ran. When her legs felt like logs of wood on fire, she did not slow down not even for a breath of fresh air her burning lungs so desperately craved. Running was all that was left, was all she could do. She had to get as far away from him as she could. She had spent her last bit of courage telling him that story, she had none left. How could she bear to face him now? She ran. She heard shouts, screams, someone was calling her name, saying something, telling her to stop. Throu
THE FINAL CHAPTERLeigh woke up to the intense feeling of pleasure coursing through her body. She turned, expecting to roll back into Willis’ arms but instead was yanked back by her hips which refused to budge. Confused she peered one eye open, then another and found quite shockingly, the reason for her pleasure and discomfort. Willis was down there. Right there between her legs and he was…Even as the realization of hit her, her body peaked sending her soaring and clearing every last trace of sleep. By the time her breathing had returned to a somewhat normalcy, she found him propped up on his elbow, smiling at her. What in the world? “What were you—why did you—what the…?” she trailed off unable to bring herself to finish the question, and glared at him with indignation and embarrassment. To her surprise and annoyance, he laughed. Willis threw his head back and let out his deep, rich la
“Don’t hold back Willis, give in and give me everything.” “You know I had a plan,” Willis began, voice deceitfully calm in a stark contrast to how his hands were racing along the fine lines of her body as he guided her or rather stumbled with her back into the penthouse.“Mmmm, you did?” Far from calm herself, Leigh struggled to keep her voice light and playful.“Sure I did,” they were more or less swaying together to the soft music now. “I was planning to seduce you with dinner,” he nuzzled her neck and she almost melted against him. “A little stargazing.”“I think…” Think straight Leigh! “I think we did stargaze.”“Mmmm, maybe. Then I thought if it wasn’t too cold then the pool…” He was nibbling on her throat now, tasting the sweet flesh just above her collarbone where her blood beat franti
"Oh my Gosh!" Leigh exclaimed, staring wide eyed at the really tall building in front of her. Willis was driving through the parking lot of the elaborate building. It stretched upwards for as far as she could see through the window of the car. That had to be some dope building Leigh thought, her mouth hanging open in awe."Where in the world are we?" She asked when she finally recovered from staring in wonder."We are at the Luminous Hotels." He announced like it was the most obvious thing in the world."The what?" Now, she stared at him in disbelief."Luminous." He provided. "Luminous Hotels.""The same one that won hotel of the year in the country?" She still couldn't believe it. She knew cause they had been given homework to write an essay on it and she had done her research."How can you.... Did you have this planned before hand?" No. He couldn't have. She knew that even when one made a reservation months in advance, they still had to wa
By the time they eventually made it inside, prom was well under way. The large assembly hall had been redecorated into a fancy dance hall for the prom. There were banners, confetti, posters and decorative pieces everywhere. Bright lights flooded the room from hanging tiny bulbs that splayed different colours and made the hall look like something out of a fairytale. About a dozen bouquets of flowers of gumdrop pink and cheery yellow were scattered carefully along the raised podium where an elaborate banner read Saints Academy Senior Prom! In bold letters that matched the colours of the flowers. Leigh tried to absorb everything at once and could only think of how dreamy it all looked. The DJ had on a classic song and there were a few people already dancing on the makeshift dancefloor. Some were at the food stand which really was just a long table that held a large bowl of fruit punch, small chops, pastries of all kinds, small plastic plates of chips and packs of bottle water. Knowing th
"Oh my gosh! You look absolutely radiant Hunny," Sam said, her eyes tearing up when Leigh came down the stairs."I didn’t look half as beautiful as you do now when I had my own prom years ago and I still totally killed it." She continued, moving over to check Leigh out more closely."Thank you Mom," Leigh said, feeling elated.Following his mother's footsteps, Tommy also took baby steps over and giggled at Leigh, clapping his hands in glee."See? Even Tommy thinks you look beautiful."She bent over to pick her little brother up. Throwing him on the air and rubbing her nose to his. "Thanks my little man.""How come you never told me thanks when I told you just how pretty you are over and over again upstairs?" Thea whined, coming down behind Leigh.Leigh rolled her eyes at the whine in her best friend's voice. "I thanked you Thea, but you wanted me to say thank you for every time you commented," Leigh pointed out, balancing Tommy
"Get your ass moving!" Carol grunted, pushing Leigh out of the car since she was sitting right by the door and refused to budge. "We’re going to miss the game!" She said fiercely, giving Leigh another hard push. She might look all small and petite but the girl was solid and as much as Carol pushed, she didn’t budge an inch. "Oh, come on. What is wrong with you? Are you having stage fright or something? You're not even going to be on stage," Carol let out a sigh of frustration. She would have gone out through the other door but Thea was busy retouching her make-up and refused to budge either. Did they both have something planned and were not letting her in on it? "Chill out Carol," Leigh told her. "Let's wait for Thea, then we can all go together." She reasoned. "Nah, don't wait for me. You guys go ahead and make sure we get the best seats in the house." Damn Thea and her big mouth. Did Thea not see that she was deliberately stalling here? Carol shot her a look and said "See? Even
Meanwhile, Willis was having after hours’ practice with his co-captain and best buddy Jeremy. It was barely two days to the biggest and final game of the season. As much as he wanted to get his head solely focused on the game, thoughts of Leigh kept popping up in them like the balls he was bouncing around Jeremy now. He knew she was out shopping and doing girly stuff with her friends but he also wished she would call him. He ached to hear her voice, to touch her, to feel her lips slide against his, to....Snap out of it Reeler, get your head in the game."You okay?" Jer asked when he shook his head for the third time in the space of minutes."Yeah..." Willis replied, bouncing the ball once and throwing it into the basket. It went round the rim once and dropped in the net.Unconvinced, Jeremy snatched the ball and went through basic routine with Willis. "That don't sound like you're okay man. Something's up?" Jer persisted, he knew if he pushed just
