“In other words, I will be ruined?” Oliver asked almost to himself than to Anne.
“Yes, we will be ruined,” Anne made it official.
Oliver felt his breathing lose its calmness again. He felt his world begin to crack. It was crashing down before his eyes. He had never once thought that a day like this would come. What had he done to deserve this fate?
“What’s causing it?” Jeff asked, breaking Oliver out of his thoughts.
It was when he asked the question that Oliver realized he had not thought of asking that same question. If they knew what was causing it then they could find a solution to it. Maybe, just maybe, he would not have to be ruined after all.
“Apparently, you’re a monster and you disrespect women,” Anne announced.
Oliver narrowed his eyes at her as if she had said something that made sense to no one in the world.
“I remember the reporters outside kept yelling things like that to him,” Jeff added. There was a small frown on his face as he remembered the way they attacked his boss.
Oliver remembered it himself too but he still had no idea where they got their information from. Who could have spread such a nasty rumor about him?
“What did I do to warrant such accusations thrown at me?” Oliver finally asked.
“I think telling you won’t work. I have to show you,” Anne said and gestured at Oliver’s office. Both Oliver and Jeff followed Anne into the space.
She found Oliver's desktop computer and opened it. Since she was his personal assistant and she had been with him for as long as he could remember, she knew everything that had to do with his life. Including his passwords. If she ever wanted to steal from him, then she would have easily done it a long time ago. Oliver trusted her with his life and he knew what she was capable of doing.
She typed and clicked on certain things on the computer and successfully brought up a video. She stopped and stared at the men to be sure she had their full attention, she was satisfied with what she saw. Both their eyes were on her and she could sense their anxiousness from where she stood. Anne turned back to the computer and played the video.
“Don't do this to me Oliver. I love you. I care about you a lot. I can't live without you. It's okay that you cheated. I will overlook it. I only want you!” a woman pleaded in the video.
She was in tears. She looked as if she had been badly hurt at heart by Oliver. It made Oliver look like a cold hearted monster.
Oliver stared at the video in shock.
“Get the hell out of my life! I don't want your filthy body in it!” Oliver yelled.
The woman moved towards Oliver and went down on her knees to hug him. She pulled it off and continued begging.
“Oliver, please, believe me. I truly love you. No one else can love you like I can. I can give up my life for you. I can sacrifice it all for you! Please Oliver!” The woman screamed.
The Oliver in the video stared down at her in disgust. He wanted nothing to do with her and it could all be read on his face. He looked like a cold hearted monster.
Immediately, he pushed her off his body and she landed on the floor harshly. She cried out in pain. “You hurt me!” She lamented.
“You deserve this much. I just want you out of my life for good! I don’t want any part of you in my life. I want nothing to do with you!” Oliver screamed.
At that, the video came to an end. Oliver gritted his teeth. His anger was slowly rising now that he knew the root of his suffering.
“Vanessa,” he spat with all the hatred he could manage to channel in that one word.
“I always knew she was up to no good,” Jeff muttered under his breath.
“I should have listened to you sooner. Look how she turned my life into a joke? A reputation I worked so hard to build, she destroyed it within hours,” Oliver cried out.
“Yeah she posted it last night and it went viral. The video broke the internet. There’s no one out there who hasn’t seen or heard about it,” Anne explained.
Oliver got to his feet and stared out the glass walls of his office. The reporters had started to reduce but he was sure it was all a camouflage. They were probably waiting somewhere for him to show up so that they would attack him.
“But why did it affect the sales this much? It's my personal life? Why do people care so much about what I do? Shouldn't they be more interested in what I have to offer?” Oliver demanded.
“People like gossip. Asides that, once people love you, they are willing to buy whatever you offer them. Even if it’s a piece of crap,” Jeff explained.
Anne nodded in agreement. “Also, you sell out more to the women. Females are your greatest customers. They have great influence. They never tire of jewelries and they can make men buy these jewelries. But they’re also very sensitive. You hurt one woman and you’re capable of losing all of them,” Anne explained.
“Like the saying goes, never underestimate the power of a woman. They can bring down the President if they want to. They have the great power of persuasion and men easily fall prey,” Jeff went on.
Everything they kept saying did not make Oliver feel any better. Instead, he only felt more doomed. How was he supposed to free himself from this problem? Was there even a way out of it?
“This just shows how doomed I have become. The women have hanged up against me and all because of a lie. Vanessa obviously manipulated the video in her favor yet I get to be the one to suffer,” Oliver complained.
“We have to find a way to prove your innocence,” Jeff whispered.
“If we could get the original footage. The full thing,” Anne thought out loud.
“Knowing how far that woman can go, I do not think she would be careless enough to leave the footage behind for us. She would have erased all traces of it,” Jeff pointed out.
Oliver let out a very pained and heavy sigh. He turned to face them. “Why did I ever get myself involved with her? She was the one cheating. Not that I care since I did not love her or have any form of feelings for her. I made it clear that it was just been friends with benefit. Yet she always clung to me. She’s been after my money the entire time and now that I caught on her, she brings this up!” Oliver exclaimed.
“She was cheating?” Anne asked, surprised herself.
“Not only was she cheating but she was plotting with the man to come after me and steal all that I have. Who knows? Probably she was also toying with that man’s feelings,” Oliver revealed.
“That’s really shallow of her. She never looked it. I never saw it coming. This is what I warn you about every time. I keep telling you to find one woman to love but you insist on playing around!” Anne scolded.
“Please Anne, not now. You can’t possibly scold me now. We’re at a crisis. The company is coming apart and you talk about love. Love that is not real but a mere illusion. An illusion that once it disappears, it leaves the one in love miserable until it drives them to total madness!” Oliver exclaimed.
His tone made Anne flinch. She went quiet immediately. Maybe she had crossed the line. She knew just how much he hated the theory about falling in love yet she had mentioned it at this time of crisis.
“I’m sorry,” Anne apologized. Oliver only nodded his head and turned to face the glass wall again. “Where are my manners? I haven’t even offered you anything. I’ll go get you some refreshments,” Anne said and excused herself. As she left, she signaled at Jeff to cheer him up. At this point, only Jeff could get to Oliver.
When Anne was gone, Jeff got to his feet and approached him. He came to a stop beside him and also looked out the glass window.
“We’ll work it out,” Jeff began.
Oliver tilted his head at Jeff. Those words from him meant a lot. It felt like Liam was standing there and telling him those words.
“You think so?” Oliver asked.
“Definitely! I mean, you've been through stuffs way worse than this and you survived them. This should be a piece of cake,” Jeff assured him.
Oliver let out a short chuckle. “And how would you know that? I have never told you about my life and it's down times before,” Oliver pointed out.
“You don't need to mention it to me sir, I just know,” Jeff added.
“You just had to ruin the romantic moment by calling me sir,” Oliver complained.
They both broke into laughter. When the laughter died down, Oliver turned to Jeff and wrapped him into a big hug.
At first, Jeff flinched but slowly, it began to feel right. It felt like that blankness in his mind was complete. Once Oliver broke off the hug, the blankness was back again.
“Thanks man, for always been here. For always keeping me sane,” Oliver spoke and it came from his heart. He meant it.
As if on cue, Anne knocked once and walked into the office. She had a tray on her hands which housed a bottle of fresh water and soft drinks. The moment Oliver noticed what she brought, it put on a frown but it was more like the frown one would give his mother when she was being too motherly.
“Make that face all you want; I’ll never bring you alcoholic drinks to the office. You can save the alcohol for the clubs and your fun places. In here, we keep it clean!” Anne scolded and served them the drinks.
“I’ll rather just have water since you refuse to spoil me with alcohol,” Oliver whined like a child.
Jeff chuckled as he watched the exchange between Anne and Oliver. Sometimes, Oliver revealed the child within him and sometimes, it was the playboy. Another side was the CEO and the true side of him, the real him; was the soft side. He was a good person but he did not like to reveal that side to just anyone.
“If only you had a wife, then she would have bailed you out of this. She would have cried to the press and told them Vanessa had been stalking you,” Anne said in an hopeless voice.
But those words hit differently in Jeff’s ears. His mind began to work all the possibilities and how it could work in their favor. Then he stared from Oliver to Anne.
“Jeff? What’s on your mind?” Oliver asked as he noticed his expression.
“Get married,” Jeff dared to say it out loud.
“What?” Oliver asked, confused and shocked.
Anne widened her eyes too as she took in the news. She understood where Jeff was heading. “A fake marriage with a fake wife. Only a wife can bail you out. She’s a woman, they would listen to her. Especially when they see her tears,” Anne blurted out with excitement.
“You’re both crazy,” Oliver managed to say. “Where will we even get a fake wife? What if she double crosses me as well?”
“That's why we need to find someone who really needs the money. There are women out there. I'm sure we can find a trustworthy one. Besides, my gut always tells me if someone is good or bad,” Jeff assured him.
“Jeff, start by taking him downtown, the population is lower there. This means there will be low chances of running into a reporter. Take him there now while I begin the search for the fake wife,” Anne instructed.
Oliver only watched them in disbelief. He had not even accepted to the fake wife plan but they were already working towards it.
“You'll be fine,” Jeff assured him.
Oliver had no choice but to believe him. There was no other way.
How was Zara going to save Kelvin? How was she going to arrange the money?Zara stepped out of the hospital. Traces of dried tears were evident on her cheeks. The cold air hit her body and she felt an involuntary shiver run down her spine. She suddenly felt so alone. She felt like she was losing the one person who had always been with her through the hardships that she had faced. She wanted support. She wanted a shoulder to cry on.Zara did not want to go to her mother or father. She had no idea what condition they were in. They were probably still shaken by what happened to her father earlier that day. If she told them what had happened, it could get her mother sick. The last thing she wanted was another sick person on her.Zara took in a deep breath. Wearing the pity like it was a garment, was not going to help her. She had promised Kelvin that she would find a way to save him. If it meant begging on the streets then she was going to do it.She checked her bank balance on her phone
"So the question is, will you, Zara Lawman, accept to be my fake wife?" Oliver demanded.Zara froze. She felt so many emotions yet she could not identify any of them. Her breathing quickened. She felt her heart begin to pound so loud that she almost went deaf. A solution to her problem had been presented to her but what it required was quite hard. She had to marry another man to save Kelvin. How was Kelvin going to take the news? How was she going to live with herself?Oliver saw the hesitation in her eyes. He did not want to pressure her and at the same time, he did not want to let her go. She looked like the perfect person for the job."You do not have to give me an answer right away. You can go back to the hospital. Have a chat with Kelvin and call me when you make your decision. Is that okay with you?" Oliver asked her.Zara finally felt herself begin to calm. "I think this is a better idea. I should talk to Kelvin first," Zara agreed."Here's my card. You can call me when you ma
"Yes. Yes it is," She answered.Oliver felt his heart skip a beat. He had not expected her to call this soon. Jeff who was resting on the couch beside Oliver turned his attention to Oliver as he noticed the change in his mood."I did not think I would ever hear your voice again," Oliver muttered the moment he regained his voice."I have spoken to Kelvin," Zara continued. Oliver caught the hope in her voice. She did not sound as defeated as she sounded when he spoke to her earlier.Jeff kept staring at Oliver as if staring like that would help him hear everything Zara had to say."And?" Oliver asked. It was when he caught himself breathing heavily that he realised he was nervous. He threw a short glance at Jeff and Jeff rose his brows at Oliver in response."He wants to see you first. He wants to be sure he can trust you. If you can convince him that he has no reason to worry then yes, I'll do it," Zara explained.Oliver nodded his head as he took in the information. It was something
Marriage was supposed to be between two people who loved themselves dearly. But instead, people were getting married for different reasons which did not include love. At least, Zara’s reason included love. She was trying to save the man she loved. Oliver could still try to claim that his reason was also for love since he was trying to save the one thing that meant the world to him after everyone else abandoned him— his company. Maybe in doing so, he was also protecting other people's love. Maybe so many lives asides that of Kelvin’s were depending on this marriage. Which was why they had to make it work no matter what. They could not screw it up.Both parties were seated opposite one another. Kelvin and Zara sat together on one side of the table. Oliver, Jeff and Anne sat on the other side of the rectangular table. They were seating in an office Anne had managed to arrange. Even Oliver wondered how she pulled it off but he decided not to ask any questions. The marriage documents wer
Kelvin watched Zara step into the space he was waiting in.For some reason, he was unsure about the whole dilemma and he cursed himself under his breath, for having such a diagnosis. As she got closer, he stood up as she gestured it was time to leave.Jeff stopped them abruptly, he definitely had something to say. Kelvin was so impatient as he rolled his eyes wondering what it could be.Ignoring Kelvin’s attitude, he turned to Zara. “I have to drop you off and take you to the park after you are done. The contract has begun and we can’t afford to create another scandal.”Kelvin raised a brow trying to decipher what that truly meant.Zara knew he was going to make a big deal out of it, she quickly chipped in to avoid misunderstandings. “Kelvin, the contract starts today and I have to move into Oliver’s house. I told him I have to tell my parents about it, so that’s where we are headed first.”Kelvin was not happy with this arrangement and he tried to raise a protest. “Does it have to be
A knock resonated on the door. This broke Zara out of her trance. She stood up without hesitation as she had been awake a while ago. She pulled the door open and was met with a beaming Maya.“Good morning, Mrs Russel. You look lovely," she began as she gestured at her clothes. She helped herself into the room and stopped in the center to face Zara again.Zara blushed as she subconsciously looked down at her outfit. She had chosen a blue sweatshirt which tightly fitted her body, a pair of harbor jeans that seemed as if they were made only for her and a pair of white sneakers. Her dark hair was tied in a ponytail. She looked beautiful without even trying so hard."Good morning and thank you, ma'am," Zara chirped and dipped her head in the process.Maya tilted her head at her before clearing her throat. "Maya, that's my name," she corrected.Zara raised her head at the head maid and smiled. "I have a better idea. If you call me Zara, then I'll address you as you wish," she laid out her
“Oh. . .I’m sorry I’m late,” Anne began as soon as she came in.She looked like she was going for a magazine cover photoshoot; on the category, '30 and made.'She had all shades of purple on. Her blazers fitted perfectly on her well tailored pants. Her stilettos and her clutch bag were the same shade of purple, a darker shade compared to her clothes. She finished with pearled jewelry and everything soothed her well.Zara had to stop herself from gawking like an idiot. It was even stranger that she was working with the exquisitely dressed woman standing before her."It's okay, I finished my breakfast a few minutes ago," Zara muttered a response.Anne nodded in response before continuing. “We have a number of events lined up and here is our schedule for today.”Anne handed over a tablet to her. Zara accepted it and stared at the scream cluelessly. She wondered if she would be able to play her part well.“I’m not sure if Mr. Russel has briefed you. We are going to shoot a video, if you s
Was she still dreaming?Anne led Zara to her car and drove her away from the fashion house. Inside the car, she decided to play soft music. She usually streamed all her songs on Spotify and she had her favorite playlist set. She moved her head slowly to the music as she drove and she noticed that even Zara moved her head to the rhythm.Zara stole a glance at Anne. She was unsure of their next destination. She guessed that it was where they would make the video but she also thought that there perhaps was another stop to make first. In the end, she decided to voice out her thoughts, only then would she get answers. "I'm guessing we're going to make the video," Zara pointed out while staring at the cars that drove past them. She had not yet gotten to the live uptown. It was almost as if everyone who lived here were always in a hurry to meet someone."We sure are, I hope you've memorized your lines?" Anne asked without looking at her. She made a turn to her left effortlessly and continue
This was very bad. Cold sweat broke out of Kelvin's body as he worked a thousand scenarios of how today would end. Was this the end? Had she found out? Was Oliver's company and reputation going to plummet down the drain? He was very certain that the woman in front of him was Vanessa Willow. Of course, she was the one, the one that had caused problems earlier for Oliver. If she was here, it was bad news for him, it was instant death. Kelvin nodded his head at Vanessa as he greeted her. He looked at Rita as she smiled at her and he wondered what signal he could give her to back off from the crazy woman in front of him. How could someone so beautiful be as evil as the press portrayed her to be?“Kelvin!” Rita called out. She noticed that he had been staring out into space for a long time. Kelvin greeted Rita briefly and turned to Vanessa. "I hope we are making you comfortable ma'am," Kelvin said politely and wore a smile on his face. "How about we give you a feel of our VIP spaces
Vanessa stared at the restaurant bewildered. She had expected it to be a small restaurant where she could just grab her grubs and leave at the speed of light. But they had something going on here. Vanessa stared at the description of the restaurant and looked back at what stood before her. The front of the restaurant was true glass, but at the same time, it offered privacy to its customers. Vanessa slowly stepped out of her car and looked at the glowing name on the signboard.“ZAMAN'S GRILLS,” she spelled it out. It looked like she wouldn't be able to get in without a reservation, although there were chairs outside, but she didn't want to be hijacked by the media. Vanessa made up her mind and entered the main restaurant, the interior was even better, with the makings of a 4.5-star restaurant. She settled into a chair and stared at the servery, where a middle-aged man and woman were working. Those middle-aged people were Paul and Rita Lawman. “Uh hi, I wanted to make a reservation
Kelvin stared at the name Paul had scribbled on a pad for the restaurant. He suppressed a laugh in him and looked at him. "Don't tell me," Kelvin laughed. They were all seated. In the Lawmans' new home. Paul jokingly hit Kelvin, “Oh please, what is wrong with Zaman's Grills?” He turned to his wife waiting for her response. Rita held her forehead and turned to Kelvin. “Paul is more obsessed with his daughter than I. It is all his doing, not like I have a better name yet," Rita saidKelvin adjusted himself in his seat and took in the living room. Oliver had taken his time decorating his house. God knows how much he had splashed into the project. "You should have seen Zara when she came in some days ago, she has grown up," Paul started. His eyes gleamed as he talked about Zara. "Really? In what aspect?" Kelvin asked with renewed interest as he clasped his hands. "Well, for one. Zara has always been a grown up but it seems like she grew up again! Zara found it hard to convey her fe
Zara sat cross-legged in front of her parents. They sat in their new home, and she had decided to visit them. She preferred breaking the news to them face to face, rather than on the phone. She had left Jeff in the car outside while she talked to her parents inside. And besides, it had been a while since she had seen them. "Dad, we are getting you a shop."Those words hadn't been digested completely in Rita and Paul's ears. One could say they had trouble processing it. They seemed to be lagging, at times. Zara sighed and rested her hands on her thighs. She uncrossed her legs and sat more comfortably. She used that opportunity to look at the house very well. She could see that Oliver had taken his time to furnish it well with high-grade furniture. Wasn't he doing too much, too much to be comfortable?"Zara, what are you saying?" Paul asked first. He seemed to have processed it faster than his wife.Zara sighed and stood up. "Mum, Dad, remember those times when you used to say you
Zara felt something ominous as she stared at her phone. Vanessa's video was trending, and she wondered what she was up to this time. Thankfully, she wasn't her problem. Oliver would deal with her sooner. She sat in the garden and looked up at the sky. The sun was high up in the sky, but it was mild on the skin because of autumn. She looked down at the flowers and thought about talking about the plants to Oliver when her phone rang. Zara stared at the ID and put it to her ear immediately. "Yes, Mom?" Zara answered. Kelvin must have already told them about it by now. She just hoped her mum wouldn't throw hard questions her way. "My baby girl, you have gotten us what we have always wanted," Rita's voice broke out as soon as she picked up.Zara sensed happiness in her mother's voice. It has been forever since she heard her mother sound that happy. She could also hear soft sobs at the end of the receiver. "Oh Rita, are you going to start on the call and keep sobbing?" Zara heard her
Vanessa had become quite miserable. In fact, "quite miserable," was an understatement. She had reached the point where she had completely embodied Squidward's point of view, that famous miserable character from that legendary kiddies show. Her reputation had plummeted downwards, she couldn't even go outside to buy her groceries because of the way people looked at her. Her suspension at work was still ongoing, she didn't even expect to be called back after what had happened. Oliver Russell. Vanessa grabbed a ceramic vase from the bedside table and flung it at the wall. It shattered into a million pieces, with the sound bouncing back and forth in the large room. She grabbed her bare knees and looked at the mirror. She was losing it. Oliver Russell. Vanessa stood up and rested her hands in front of the dressing mirror. Her eyes were puffy from not getting enough sleep and she had gained some mass from staying at home, lazing around since last week. "Oliver, I will crush you!" Vane
Oliver smiled back at Zara with his hands in his pocket. Zara slowly stood up and shook her head. It was impossible, why was he going that far? He was getting too involved with them. "No, I can't accept that," Zara shook her head. "You can cut off my bonuses, I barely use them anyway. You can use the money and pay for the—" Oliver cleared his throat and Zara stopped talking. He looked down at her and cocked his brow. "Tell me the truth. If I left it to you, you wouldn't have been able to do it, even with the bonuses. Are you a masochist? Can you even repay me?" The smile on his had disappeared. Zara looked to the ground and held her palms together. She felt her palms were the only ones warming her up in front of Oliver's cold stare. "I—I—""You can't. So instead of partying with the money I have, or going to the brothel, I want to help your family, and you are not stopping me," Oliver paused. He saw that he had been coming a bit too strong there. He watched as Zara's body tensed
"We need to talk."A sentence with four words. It sounded more intense than it was intended to, partly because Zara was trying to avoid Oliver. She hadn't forgotten what had happened on the rooftop that day. She knew it. She had almost kissed Oliver. "We need to talk."She simply stared at the message that was displayed on the screen. It had been there since morning, and she hadn't even bothered to reply. “Curse you, Oliver,” Zara flustered. She had successfully ignored Oliver for the last few days after that incident. She beat herself up every time she remembered it. What killed her the most was that she could not tell Kelvin about it. How would she even start? She knew it was almost an act of betrayal. Kelvin himself had been very busy for the past few days, his cafe boomed well. He was very happy. No way she was going to spoil it for him. Zara straightened her dress and heaved a deep sigh in front of the mirror. Her face stared back at her. She looked less confident than the wa
Oliver flexed his fingers in front of his laptop. The tech seemed alien to him. How many days had he missed work? Four days? Two days? Well, none of that mattered since he was—Anne barged into the office and shook Oliver out of his thoughts. Oliver blinked several times at her and she simply stared back at him. Oliver thought he would have another episode of severe scolding for dumping his work on her. "Oliver, I found what might become a problem later," Anne dropped her laptop on Oliver's table. She had taken Oliver by surprise. He thought he would have gotten scolded again. "What are you talking about?" Oliver raised a brow in confusion. Anne slapped her forehead lightly. She had forgotten that she had left Oliver out of the loop since Vanessa's last show. "Okay, let me place it like this since you have not been around for a while," she flashed Oliver a frown and he swallowed. He raised his hands in submission and Anne continued. "I ended up putting myself in Vanessa. More lik
