- Ch 10 -
Sebastian and Dorin ran.
At the back of the North Dormitory, there was a small garden that opened to the woods, past that were several small buildings, one of which was a wooden cabin with a sign 'Photography Club' posted on a plank in front. Hanging on top of the double doors was a banner saying '5th Annual Photography Club Summer Camp'. Several people were standing around a table by the entrance.
"Please sign here for attendance!" It was Anastasia. She brightened up when she saw Dorin with Seb and waved them closer. "Good morning Dorin! Good to see you made it on time."
"Good morning!" Dorin said beaming. "Is the class about to start?"
"In a couple of minutes, just sign your name here..." she pointed to a blank space in a list that was almost filled with names. Dorin signed the attendance sheet and turned around to thank Seb for taking him to the Photography Club when he noticed his friend signing his name too.
"Okay, you guys can go right in," said Anastasia.
"You got in, too?" Dorin said delightedly.
[I've got my ways.] Seb wrote in reply.
The two stepped inside the cabin. There was a lecture hall inside, standing on a platform in front was Josiah, the Photography club president, fixing small rectangular strips into a round contraption. There were about 24 students inside the room, Dorin and Seb included. Dorin found two free seats in front and dragged Seb there just in time as Josiah tapped his pen on the table to call their attention.
"Good morning fellow students, and welcome to the Photography Clubroom," Josiah said after clearing his throat. "As you all know, this is the 5th Annual Photography Club Summer Camp. My name is Josiah Simpson, Science department year 7, Major in Geography. I guess most of you already know about me, so with no further ado, let us start with our lecture..." He signaled Anastasia who turned off the lights and turned on the round machine. Dorin gasped. He almost jumped out of his seat as he stared at the 3D images that seem to fill the room.
"Woah..." he mused as silent as he could, nudging Seb with his elbow, "is that another technological contraption? I can't feel any magic from it!"
Seb nudged him back, harder.
"Now, a short history on Photography..." continued Josiah, ignoring the murmuring from Dorin's direction as he showed several images to the class.
“Nowadays,” he continued, “we seldom have the need to develop pictures since the advent of digital photography. We can now take photos even with our cellphones..."
"You can?" Dorin asked, looking at Seb. "Can you take pictures with your phone, too?" he asked again. Seb ignored him.
"Ahem..." Josiah cleared his throat. "As I was saying, with digital photography, you can take pictures, anytime, anywhere, with a device that could fit on the palm of your hands. You can also view your pictures in a matter of seconds, even movies..."
"But," Josiah added, "There is no longer the trill, the real passion of catching a single moment in the blink of an eye, that could never be repeated! To catch the best pictures you could compose! Pictures that you can not view until you have toiled in a dark room to have them developed!"
Josiah has his fists clenched in the air. A murmuring came from the room, even Seb was nodding his head in agreement.
"So now, we come to our main topic," click "Our main theme is 'Analog Photography', using Film Based Cameras. In this year's Photography Camp, we shall be discussing how to use 'single-lens reflex' or SLR cameras." Josiah signaled Anastasia to turn the lights on. "I expect everyone here is already familiar with the parts and uses of their cameras... Unless you have any questions?"
Seb looked at Dorin, waiting for the newbie to ask questions, but the other simply took out his camera, removed the lens cover, and started adjusting the lens. Seb shrugged, took out his own camera from one of his coat pockets, and heard Dorin gasp beside him.
"Oh, it's a Leica M6 camera!" Dorin suddenly said excitedly. "Can I see it?" Seb looked at his companion and reluctantly handed his camera. Dorin held it with both hands, removed the cap from the lens, and focused it. "Is there film inside?" he asked.
[Don't use it.] was Seb's written reply. [Have you seen a Leica before?]
"Yup. In your book last night." Dorin replied absent-mindedly. "Look, that one's a Spotmatic, and there's a Bronica and a Mamiya too!" he looked at Seb, "You think they would let me look at their cameras?" he asked.
[Go ahead and ask them.] wrote Seb.
He watched as Dorin did as he told him. Some of the students smiled at him - Dorin's grin really is contagious, a girl even took his photo, to Dorin's delight.
"Now, people, please settle down first," said Josiah, tapping the table.
Anastasia went in front holding a digital camera. "Let's take a sample shot to see the difference in aperture..." She connected a cable from the DSLR camera to a desktop computer while Josiah sat in a corner. "Now, I need a volunteer..." Dorin's hand shot up immediately. "Yes, Dorin, can you please stand in front with your back to the class?"
"Yes, ma'am!"
"Now smile!" Anastasia took a picture and checked the screen on the computer. The picture was blurry. "Oh, let's try that again, won't we?" She took another picture, but still, the photo won't show his face clearly.
"Hmm..." Dorin looks at the screen thoughtfully, "Perhaps the camera is broken?"
[Take mine instead.] Seb offered, standing up.
"Oh, okay." Anastasia took Seb's picture which showed up properly on the screen.
"Hey, how come..." protested Dorin, but Seb simply pulled him back to their seat.
Anastasia went on with the lesson and showed the class about shutter speed next.
"Now, let's go to practical application," Josiah said after the lecture.
He took out 2 boxes full of small toys. "You are to find a partner and take photos using first, wide and narrow aperture, then experiment with your shutter speed. You are to take pictures using the props from these two boxes."
The students approached the platform to choose their props, Dorin was about to do the same when he noticed Seb aiming his cellphone at him.
"Hey, did you take my picture?" he asked with a grin, "Let me see!" They both looked at the camera phone. The photo, like the ones earlier, was blurred.
"Again!" said Dorin with a frown, keeping as steady as he can.
Seb took another snapshot with the same results.
"What gives?" Dorin wonders aloud.
[You probably have an anti-photo charm on you.] wrote Seb.
"What for?" the other asks.
[Ask your mom] Seb replied on the slate. Before Dorin could say another word, Seb went to the boxes to take the only remaining props in the box. A toy snare drum with sticks tied to the sides, and a creepy wind-up monkey with an evil sneer on its face.
"Hey, you're Sebastian, right?" called one of the students to Seb. "Do you have extra film on you?"
[What type?]
"135 film please, 12 shots," the guy replied. Seb reached into one of his inner pockets and pulled out a small box of film. "Thanks," said the guy, handing him some money.
"Do you have all kinds of film in there?" asked Dorin, eyeing Seb's coat which didn't look bulky in any way.
[Yup. I also have slides, the older, the more expensive.]
Just then Josiah called for their attention. "Please note that you will be submitting a total of 4 photos today; 2 pictures to show the difference between wide and narrow aperture, and 2 pictures to show the difference in shutter speed. You can take as many photos as you want and choose 4 from the stack after we get them developed."
"Oh, we get to develop them today?" asked Dorin. Josiah ignored him."
"You have 2 hours to take pictures," the lecturer continued, "you may take it here inside the room or you may step outside. Your subject for today is the toy you chose from our boxes. Anastasia and I will be available if you have any further questions."
"We will have our lunch break at 12 noon,” said Anastasia “but before you leave, please put the toys back in the boxes. The class will resume at 1 pm"
[Let's go.] wrote Seb.
The two decided to step outside to take pictures under the natural light. Seb placed the creepy monkey on a wooden fence, the woods as the background, and started taking photos.
[Take the drums and play behind the sneering monkey.] he told Dorin, writing fast.
"Like this?" he asked while Seb took pictures of the monkey with him playing in the background.
Dorin took a couple of pictures of the monkey too, then of Seb, then of a curious red fox peeping between the trunks of 2 beech trees in the woods.
[Don't take too many pictures, your film might run out.] wrote Seb. [You also took photos last night, right? There are only 36 shots in that camera. You can't just put in a new one since we need to develop the roll later.]
"Oh, I still got... 17 shots remaining," said Dorin, looking at the frame indicator. "Can you stand under the sun with the drum?" Seb did as he was asked and gave a drum roll as Seb took some pictures. He focused on Seb's hand as it beat the drum, the sun behind him.
"I heard there’s a photo contest after the camp?" he asked Seb.
[Yup. 1st place is a high-end twin-lens reflex camera.] wrote his friend, [Reason why I joined.]
"Woah, a vintage camera, huh?" Dorin mused, "That would be nice, but I'm already content with my SLR." he grinned. “Besides, a new digital camera would be of no use to me back home where there is no electricity.”
[Are you finished? We still got about 2 hours before lunch]
"Then, how about a trip around campus while we look for somewhere to eat?"
Seb nodded in reply.
They made their way, following a path leading away from the cabin, out of the woods, and into an area that Dorin recognized.
"Hey, this is that place last night where we left Margarette near the gates!" he looked around and ran to the side of the wall. "It's my tiller... you planted it!" he touched the branch of laurel. New leaves were already sprouting from it. Seb watched him closely.
[That is a branch of a golden bay laurel tree. It only grows in the southern lands.] he wrote.
"Yeah, my mom brought a twig once and planted it in our garden. I see you have planted it as well." he touched the branch again, "It's deeply rooted in the ground, I'm guessing you're a wood element?"
[Something like that.] replied Seb.
"So you can help plants grow? I bet you have a great garden back home."
[A herb garden for my spell ingredients.] Seb wrote, [I have been wondering how you used the branch to fly, it hasn’t been embedded long with power, you mentioned a rudder?]
"I just needed something to sit on while traveling, and it helps with turning directions, less stress on the wind magic."
[You were using pure wind magic to fly?] Seb asked.
"Yup, wanna see?"
[Yes, please.]
Dorin gave a whistle. The air started to stir. Another whistle and a gale lifted him up to the air. Seb held on to his coat. With a third, higher note, Dorin started to move around, first one direction, then the other, and soon he was flipping in the air.
"Wow, the charm aunt Agate gave me really works wonders! I feel so light and my magic is flowing out regularly!"
[It's a wonder you can fly at all. The whole university grounds has a magic suppressor of its own. Most students can't work magic inside the campus, particularly here, inside the inner walls.]
"Really?" Dorin asked, "How about you?" Seb was motionless for a while. He raised a hand. On his palm, water started to accumulate and overflow. He closed his hand and the water was gone, evaporating into the air. Perspiration dripped from his chin.
[That's the most I can do.]
"But the plant..."
[It was already flowing with your energy, all I had to do was focus on it to grow.] he wrote, [I would like to do some tests to gauge the magnitude of your magic, would you consent to that?] he asked.
"Sure, why not?" Dorin replied with a friendly grin, "But you need to show me around campus first!" he quickly added, "Besides, I'm starting to get hungry!"

The two went on their way. From the main gates, they went straight ahead to the main school building, a vast castle which housed the business offices of the University, professors' dorms, and faculties for the 3 major Divisions, namely Military and Sports Division, Science and Technology Division, and the Magic and Arts Division. They turned to the left then, on a clockwise direction, where the main Military grounds lay. Most of the University's west side was for this division, including training grounds and sports fields which lay under the Military division. This includes horse tracks, soccer fields, basketball courts, Olympic size pools, gymnasiums and the likes. The West Dormitory is a large western style building used as barracks for the students with rooms housing as many as 60 students each. They could see 2 of them from a distance, side by side to separate the male from female soldiers. To the north was the Science Department's main building, a massive buildi
The three passed the Science department to buy some snacks on their way to the military department. The Science building had several food dispensers located in front and Dorin bought a lot of snacks from each. His satchel was near bursting when they finally went on their way to the shooting ranges. "How come we don't have food dispensers in our dorms?" Dorin asked, popping some candy inside his mouth. [Magic students kept messing around with it, the food inside always disappear in the morning] Seb with a wafer stick hanging out of his mouth. "Really, you two, hurry up and finish your snacks." Mar said with a frown, "Eating is prohibited in most areas in the Military department, particularly in the training fields." [Roger] Seb gulped his wafer. Dorin placed the rest of the candy in his mouth and chewed vigorously. "We'll be passing the Sky Gate." Mar pointed at a gatehouse with 2 guards standing in front. The grounds of the
"Sebastian!" Mar ran to her friend's side. "Are you okay?" "What the hell is going on out here?" yelled someone from behind. People in the barn rushed outside to see what all the commotion was about. "Major General Muller!" saluted Drill Sergeant Robinson, his face turning pale, "There's been a weapon malfunction." "Sir." Mar stood in attention, "A civilian has been injured by a weapon malfunction." The general approached and looked at the crater where the target used to be before checking on the two students on the ground. "Would someone tell me what happened here?" he demanded, when Dorin suddenly looked up. "Dorin?!" the general said with a gasp. "What are you doing here?!" Dorin stared at the general wide-eyed, thoughts swirling in his head. He looked down at his friend, unconscious in his arms. "Marcus," he said, staring back at the general, "my... friend... is hurt." Major General Marcus Muller stared at
"You sure you'll be okay?" Margarette asked for the umpteenth time. Sebastian nodded beside her. "If you're really sure..." "Don't worry Margarette, I'll take care of Seb," said Dorin. They were standing in front of the entrance of the East Dormitory. Sebastian's bandaged right hand hangs from a sling around his neck. It was a good thing that only the tips of his left fingers got injured. Mar looked at Seb one last time and sighed. "I'll see you guys tomorrow then," she said, turning around, "my training ends at 2 PM, I'll go to the Photography Club room as soon as I can. I'll keep in touch." The two were left in silence. They made their way to their room, not saying a word. Dorin placed his bag inside his closet and changed into a shirt. Seb took his coat off and was about to climb up his bed when Dorin stopped him. "Seb," he called to his roommate. "I want to apologize again for what happened." Seb nodded and proceeded to go up to his bunk b
Dorin woke up early the next day. He took a quick bath and hurried to the kitchen, leaving Sebastian snoozing on the top bunk. The kitchen was still under renovation, so he made his way outside to the canteen. It was still closed. He sighed, stifled a yawn, and waited for the cook to arrive with the key. He was getting hungry. Good thing he brought some snacks. He was humming while he ate, squatting on the ground, when a pair of rugged sneakers stopped in front of him. "What are you doing there?" asked a frowning guy in a frayed shirt and faded jeans. "The canteen won't open till 7 am." "Oh, I'm here for kitchen duty," Dorin said with a smile. "Do you have the keys?" he asked. "Only the head cook has the keys," the guy said, squatting on the ground away from Dorin. He had close-cropped reddish dark brown hair, a dark complexion, and sunburnt arms. "You aiming for scholarship too?" he asked, eyeing Dorin's new clothes. "Scholarship?"
- Criteria Finally, Josiah accepted the invitation. The 4 of them walked past several other clubhouses, mostly art and music-related. As they walked, the woods seemed to go deeper, the trees closer to each other, soon the light of the sun was covered by the trees. They followed a paved road which led to an archway, on top of which was the sign 'Magic Division Main Campus'. By the side was a sign saying 'Only bonafide magi are allowed to enter'. The group went straight through. As Dorin did, he felt as if he passed a kind of membrane, but the professor held his hand, as well as Josiah's, and they were able to make it inside the grounds. They walked for a couple of minutes more until a grand castle come into view. The castle stood in the midst of a vast clearing, surrounded by a wall of trees. Its grey walls looked ancient with moss and lichen growing from its cracks and covering it with vines. There was a veil of
Dorin and Seb sat in the lecture room with the rest of the students as the judges went around to see the photos. "What do you think will win 1st prize?" Dorin asked Seb. [Hard to tell.] Seb answered, [We might have our favorites, but it would depend entirely on the judges' discretion.] "But if you were to choose, which one would you pick?" ['Shadow lace', How about you?] "I like that photo of the moving lights, I'd like to capture something like that soon..." [Hmph. Something like that is already common here in the city. Shadow lace is more interesting. The composition is unique and the lighting was perfect.] "I guess so... How about my work? What do you think about my brick oven?" Seb looked at the picture, the flames dancing inside the oven, the steam from the newly baked bread. [It's good, looks fit for a bakery commercial.] "Commercial?" Dorin looked at him, questioning. "Oh, the judging has begun!"
The small group made it to the Magic Dorm's outer kitchen just before 5. The cook, Mrs. Cooper, let them in the cafeteria but was on the way out herself. "Professor Dupont," she greeted the teacher, "It's been a while since you came by." "Hello Mrs. Cooper!" replied Professor Dupont, "I just came from a class and heard that Dorin here is quite the cook, I decided to try some of it out myself." The cook laughed. "Well, if he could keep himself from blowing up my kitchen, I'd say he's quite the good cook!" Dorin looked embarrassed. "Get in the kitchen boy," she added, "you can start peeling the potatoes while I go out to buy something." [Perhaps I can be of assistance?] Seb showed her his slate. "Not unless you have some baking soda up your sleeves." Seb was silent for a while, then shook his head. [I can buy it for you] he writes. "No thanks. I know how high your 'service charge' is..." Mrs. Cooper waved him off.

Farewell, `till we see again, this had been your author, Psynoid Al signing out :D I hope you will continue to support me by visiting my k
It is true that it is hard to believe the words of a person who have betrayed you. But someone was ready to believe everything about Elazar, even if he was so against ‘her’ when she was still Eirian.[How I wish I had a chance to talk to Elazar before he disappeared!] Sebastian wrote to Dorin when they got back to the dorms one day. [If I only knew he was my ancestor, I would have asked him hundreds of questions about being a silver tongue!]“Question is, would he have answered your questions truthfully?” Johan said after reading his slate. “
News of a terrorist that infiltrated the University spread the next day. The name of the people involved and details of the actual event were withheld from the public due to security reasons, but almost all students in school already knew that it was about Dorin and his friend.“Wait, what was the name of his friend again?” they asked each other. “The real pretty one who had a different hair and eye color each day?”“I think it was Ariel?”“No, wasn’t it Ellen?”
Blinding light surrounded Eirian, as well as thick smoke as the lightning found it’s target.“Did we get her?!” asked Johan who stood on top of a raised dais made of bedrock. He raised himself just in time to evade Dorin’s lightning. “I... I think so...” said Xander who was trying to see through the dust and smoke.“Wind!” Venet called, blowing the smoke and debris away. “How annoying.” They saw Eirian climbing out of a thick glass bauble. “Are you really that vehement to stay here, Dorin?” “That’s right Eirian, and it’s not like I could leave, anyway,” replied Dorin. “Didn’t mother tell you that I can’t leave without graduating first?”“Psh,” she snorted. “That would be easy. I could just tell the Dean to give you a diploma. Problem solved. No need to wait for years just for senile old men to decide if you’re good enough to pass.”“I don’t want that, Eirian. I want to learn.” “I can teach you everything they know, and more.” “Yet you would only show me what you want me to see.”
“Fools! Do you honestly think that you could put one ever me?!” Eirian said with a haughty laugh. “On me, who have lived all these years without being commanded or controlled by any other being?! I have waited millennia just for this chance to come, and now that it’s here, do you really think I would just let insects like you foil my plans?” ‘What does she mean by that?’ thought Benette who held Dagon tightly in his arms. ‘Just who is she? And how old is she supposed to be?’“E-Eirian... you promised!” Dorin said as he crouched on the ground, trying to push himself
Johan gasped when Dagon fell unconscious in his arms, the remainder of a half eaten chocolate bar, falling to the ground. “What did you do to-” “Stop.” The force of command in Eirian’s voice made everyone’s body quiver. No one moved. No one could even breath. “You think a mere dragon child would be enough to stop me?” Eirian said with amused laughter. “Now listen to me,” she said, only then did the people around her take a gasp of breath. “No one tells me what to do. I give all the commands here, and you will simply o-” She was surprised when Johan suddenly struck his hand out towards her. She tried to jump back, but wasn’t quick enough. The fire mage quickly grabbed her mouth and covered it with a rough, calloused hand. “Got you, you bitch,” he snarled with Dagon dangling on his left arm, still sleeping. “You think your tricks can work on me? I’m used to dealing with double crossing bastards like you, and I’ve got experience!” He looked back as someone touched his shoul
Benette concentrated on the quivering body in front of him. He knew that as long as there was still warmth, as long as there was a spark of life in the cells within a body, that he could spread that life to create something new. When he was younger, he didn’t know how to heal, he simply knew that a living thing should live, and so wished it. It was so simple and obvious that he just knew that is should be. Just like how the lungs keep on breathing and the stomach digesting and the heart beating. Now that he is older and more knowledgeable of the parts and functions of a living organism
The first time Patrice Francoise Benette used his healing powers was when he was four years old.Coming from a strict, military family, his parents both demanded absolute obedience to rules and utmost respect to the highest authority, which was his father. As soon as he learned to talk, he was taught to call the Benette patriarch ‘Sir’, and told to act accordingly in a disciplined manner. Toys were limited to practical educational materials.
Chapter 112- I Admit Defeat ‘Is that the best you can do?’ Mordecai’s voice taunted Dorin in his mind. ‘I’ve already seen all your attacks, may it be wind, water, fire, earth, and lightning. So what else can you do?’ Dorin didn’t answer. He tried his best to chase and hit the medic, but none of his attacks can seem to touch him. He wanted to release everything, drown in the power of his lightning as before... ‘As before?’ His opponent was a powerful mage from the capital, He didn’t need to worry about holding back or a possible overkill. He can just have some fun again. ‘Again?’ He looked up at the sky and called to the darkness, calling pillars of thunder down upon Mordecai. Still, the attacks didn’t work. ‘Still not good enough.’ Mordecai laughed inside his head. ‘Useless. Should I proclaim myself as the winner now?’ Dorin’s eyes shone golden. He no longer cared what happened before or here after. ‘Not yet.’ he entered Mordecai’s mind. And he had a feeling as well that
