Chapter 4

last update Last Updated: 2022-01-22 08:31:14

Minerva can’t get off of the look on the face of that accountant in her mind.

She exhaled, and inhaled. The passing cars of the city are a cacophony to her ears. But she guessed, this is much better than knowing the fact that her late partner left her with a bunch of debt. Not just a bunch, but a pile of stacked debts.

She tried to shove those thoughts into her mind’s trash can if there is anything left to shove.

She’s broke now. Well, at least financially.

Her baby kicked again, as if the life inside her was also furious at what Derrick, her supposed fiancé, did to her—did to them.

They’re in debt and in need of money. The thing is, the bank wouldn’t allow them to lend money as long as they haven’t yet paid half of the previous debt—Derrick’s debt. She even thought about selling her car in order to sustain her life and her life as an expecting mother.

“Where will I go now?!” She uttered as she opened her car’s door with a powerful force, nearly hitting the man in the bank earlier on the chest.

“Are you okay?” It was the man who asked her instead of her asking him.

“Do I freaking look okay?!” Minerva has now unleashed her anger upon seeing this man. It seems the face of any man would remind her of her late fiancé’s face. The fiancé who died because of gambling and who also left them millions of debts due to gambling.

“The accountant told me of your current financial status. Care to talk with me?” He then gestured his head towards a nearby restaurant. With its vibrant red colors and ephemera, it seems the restaurant is a Chinese one.

‘Great! The Chinese restaurant seems sumptuous if not for the fact that it was also the restaurant in which Derrick proposed to me…’  Minerva thought and glared at him. From head to toe. From the outside and on the inside—inside the apparel that he wore.

“Ehem!” The rich and handsome man cleared his throat.

“Ahh—I was just kind of…kind of surprised as tha—that place is the place my late fiancé proposed to me…” Minerva was visibly stammering. Her eyes on the ground, refraining to look at the billionaire by the eyes.

“I see…” He yielded a pitiful expression. “If you don’t want, we can just—”

“No! I mean…” She sighed, before speaking again. “Don’t mind me. I’m just okay to eat at that restaurant. Past is past and never to discuss. It’s time to fully move on.”

The billionaire nodded and offered a hand so they may walk together.

In less than a minute, they are now sauntering towards the Chinese restaurant.

***

The smell of the food made Minerva filled with hunger. She suddenly remembers that she only had oatmeal for breakfast since the last few days.

The smell of that beef tenderloin could send Minerva sprinting towards the kitchen and gobble all the food in an instant.

Luckily, a few part of her conscience and self-discipline were still clinging on the last thread of her patience.

She is hungry; famished is the much precise word for what she is feeling right now.

And Minerva couldn’t help but gobble and feast on the food; setting aside any feeling of embarrassment and the judging eyes of the people in the restaurant.

A smile was plastered on the face of Darwin Gray as he scooped a spoon of egg soup to his mouth.

***

The numbers in the lottery seem to beckon her to spend more, to gamble further.

Their lives had been a misery ever since her mother went with another man, leaving her heart-broken father to solely raise and love her.

“I guess you shouldn’t waste your money further, Minerva.”

That voice. It only belongs to one person only. The coldness in that voice resonates to the owner’s personality.

Minerva turned around to find her mother grinning. To be frank, it was more of a sneer than a grin.

For others, it looks like a smile. But to her, it was a pitiful smile of a fake, fake, fake, and very fake person.

Minerva often wished that she rather had no mother than to have this woman in front of her as the person who birthed her.

Every time she saw her mother’s face, it was a torture. The bitch never knew how much pain her father had gone through when Rhea left them to be with a much well-off man—to a billionaire.

“Here’s a thousand dollars for that pitiful sad face of yours,” her mother said as she patted her on the cheeks then handed her the 1000$.

If Minerva was not in need of money, she could have refused it. But her father was sick…again. And this cash, this ‘gift’, is pretty much vital for her father’s wellness, especially to his expensive medicines.

“Thank you.” That was a genuine gratitude from her.

Her mother’s smile grew wider, and in embarrassment, she just smiled back as well.

That smile could’ve made her smile genuinely if it wasn’t for her mother’s gaze averting to the person behind her—to William Reeves, her mother’s new husband.

“Hello there, Minerva! It seems that you grew even more beautiful each time we met; more beautiful than the other sixteen-year-old girls like you,” William praised as he removed his coat.

“Thank you very much. I’m flattered, Mr. Reeves,” she said while refraining to look him in the eyes.

The man, Rhea’s new husband, could’ve been kind if it wasn’t for the lustful look that he gives to Minerva everytime the two met. Truly, a lustful and sex-loving man he was, he is, and he will always be. Utterly disgusting.

“Here’s 5000$ more, honey. I’ve heard your father was sick so I thought, I mean we thought that we could share a bit of our blessings to those people in need; especially to you, Minerva Miller.”

William said as he glanced from time to time to his wife while speaking to Minerva.

         Minerva gave her thanks ‘wholeheartedly’.

‘I wonder what will be the payment for this help, his help,’ she thought.

William Reeves is always the unlimited source of money for Rhea. That 1000$ obviously was supposed to be for the bags and shoes and apparel of Rhea but just chose to ‘give’ it to her as if she was a thoughtful woman, thoughtful mother. Pathetic.

Minerva looked at her cheap wristwatch and then bid her farewell to the two. Her father has probably been waiting for the medicine she bought since an hour ago.

She walked fast, very fast. Her phone rang; surely knowing it was her father. She instead ran for the taxi that she called rather than answering her phone.

Suddenly, she  bumps into someone. He was a handsome, charismatic man.

“I’m truly sorry, sir.” Minerva then offered her apology to the well-clothed man. He looks very much professional—perhaps a manager, or an executive director, or probably a C.E.O.

Her smile then vanished when she realized that upon bumping, she spilled the man’s coffee in his own clothes.

Panicked and irritated towards herself, she handed over to the man the 1000$ that her mother gave to her.

“I’m very, very, very sorry, Mister. Here’s a thousand dollars for you to buy clothes and change. I’m pretty much sure you’re going to a meeting.” She said while quickly giving the money then ran to the taxi without even bothering to look back.

The man, who was also shocked and confused whether he’ll be angry or irritated or remain silent, just accepted the money that the young girl handed.

He then watches the lass get inside the yellow cab.

Darwin tried to read the letter twice. He had received this letter just an hour ago from his half-brother. He smiled as soon as his secretary handed it to him; not because it came from his estranged brother, but because it was enclosed in a smooth, gold envelope and had even a luxurious fragrance of a perfume still on it. “He badly needed my help, if this is how he gave the letter to me,” Darwin muttered as he opened it with a letter opener, the knife glinting as the fluorescent bulb cast its light onto them.Dearest Brother,

Minerva had just one big realization: Darwin Gray was the man who paid for her groceries back when she was still grieving of her father’s loss. After their dinner ‘date’ at that Chinese restaurant, she was offered to meet up in this hotel yet again; to discuss certain things that will clarify Minerva’s mind about Darwin ‘taking care’ of Minerva Miller. Minerva agreed to meet here. Not because he was anxious to know what Mr. Gray is going to discuss with her. Instead, it was because of the sumptuous food of the hotel and the luxurious drinks. The restaurant already has nice, warm, expensive interiors; how much more a specialty restaurant within a high-end hotel itself? “How long have you been here, Ms. Miller?” Minerva

“Minerva!” Before Minerva could turn around who called her, she was seized by someone who has powerful force and a well-built body. He grabbed her by the arm and brought her back to the street that almost tore her right arm apart. “What the freak are you doing? You’re gonna killed yourself and your baby!” Minerva was panting, catching for breath. She was shaking, quivering and still processing why she ended in the middle of the street in the first place earlier. “I…I—I got lost. I was so boiling in anger inside that I did not manage to think that I was already one step closer to death.”&nb

She parted her lips first. But Darwin pulled her back into his lips. Yet, she refused. “Let me talk first,” Minerva said while she was catching her breath. “No. Let me talk first,” Darwin countered. “I-I am sorry…for that. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings, Minnie.” Finally, Minerva smiled—a sweet, angelic one. “You did not. You just told me the truth.” He raised his hand to her lips. “I know you will be a good wife. And I will be a good father to your little one as well.”&

Minerva bounced up and down into Darwin as if she was riding a horse. She was definitely hungry for this man; yearning for his body is the precise term. “Is it okay for you and the baby?” Darwin asked as big drops of sweat flow from him, not to mention the fluid that is also flowing from inside him to Minerva’s wide opening. This is their second round now; heaven knows what has gotten to Minerva but all she knows she will set aside those debts and problems and Derrick-ness. She will focus on Darwin tonight—to him and to his body only. She did it slowly as her child was still inside her womb. Darwin also understood this and thrust slowly but surely inside her.&nb

Minerva’s body was indeed swollen due to last night’s bed session. Darwin already left for work and even gave her a sweet, wife-y kiss first before closing the door. She had been folding her apparel, ironing her undergarments, and washing his dirty clothes; like what a housewife should do. But Minerva wasn’t a housewife—not a wife either, not yet. She was only doing this as she had accepted the fact that from now on, she will be staying in this penthouse—she will be living from this moment with Darwin. She had swept the floor, washed the dishes, and even wiped some dusty things inside despite her condition. She doesn’t know why. She’s uncomfortable ju

“You see now, Minerva,” Darwin patted the back of the newly awakened Minerva on the couch. “There is always good in everybody. No matter how despicable they are…” “I know.” Minerva’s tears were still wetting her face early in the morning. “Is that only your reply, Minnie?!” Her head was still bowed down in sorrow despite his echoing voice. “It’s the same words you kept on uttering since last night!” She abruptly turned her head towards him and pointed a finger to herself. “Can’t you see I’m having my moment? Please, Darwin. Just let me cry for today. You know that pregnant women are particularly overly emotional…”

  • Paid to the Billionaire   Author's Note

So, this is my second book. My second book is one hell of a billionaire romance. *unbelievably screaming* I would never imagine writing a billionaire romance. Because, first of all, my focus is only for fantasy and paranormal and everything in between. But when I started writing billionaire romances, I realized that I should write more of these; that writing this genre is a delight and a challenge. So thank you my dear readers. If you’ve been able to read this part, thank you so much. If you’ve managed to read only a few of my book’s chapters, thank you as well. Thank you from the bottom of my heart—because an author would never be able to be a writer without even a single reader. Love you all

  • Paid to the Billionaire    The End is the Beginning (Bonus Scene)

In the Eyes of MinervaCyrene and Damon were finally bound together through the holiness of matrimony. It’s a delight, and a blessing to witness this glorious event—especially when Hemera Lou Miller-Gray, who just turned one year old, was sleeping like a lamb in my arms. The reception had ended and they were on their way to their consummation, which made me grin as the memories of the night of post-wedding love-making of me and Darwin made me blush. “How’s my little Hemera Lou Miller Gray?” Darwin asked as he brushed a kiss on my hair. “She’s sleeping soundly.” I looked up to my man, to my husband. “They are twins, darling.” Darwin’s face was flooded with joy and delight. “Really, babe? Yes!” “And they are both boys,” I added. He tried to hoist me from the ground but I insisted not to as he’ll wake the baby. My honey pie sweetheart just kissed me. But kisses are always the start of vigorous

  • Paid to the Billionaire   Chapter 50

Minerva’s POVThe reception is beyond beautiful. Though I was still panting due to me and Darwin’s long lips-to-lips fondue, the place felt as if we had finally entered the final circle of heavenly paradise to where His Holiness resides. Shades of sky blue and pink bathe the whole reception. One could mistake this as a lavish debut celebration due to the colors. But I don’t give a damn. This is my wedding. Our wedding. A fucking wedding and, whether one sees it as a teenage birthday party, I don’t care. Everything feels like a dream, everything feels as if I am walking in my own dream. A place that I thought I could only see when I slept. But with this…money can buy happiness truly. Upon entering, we are greeted with a man-made white chocolate fountain atop a water fountain, waters flowing down like a waterfall. Flowers play a huge role in this sophisticated scenery. Every inch of our wedding reception has flowers and candle lights and other glitter

  • Paid to the Billionaire   Chapter 49

Minerva’s POV“It’s about to start!” The maid of honor is more excited than the bride, than me. “I see handsome Darwin the billionaire waiting at the end of the aisle and he’s just as nervous and anxious as you!” She wiggled my nose before handing me the bouquet of flowers which consists of red roses, violets, lavender, pink carnation, and purple orchids. Gosh, I felt like holding the heavenly garden in my hands. “Go, marry him now,” Mariella did come back to me just to whisper that in my ear. “If you don’t, I know plenty of women, both young and old, who would.” I cackled, making my make-up artist frown for almost ruining her masterpiece in my face. Fifteen minutes later, as I was standing where we rehearsed yesterday. The priest finally came out and asked everybody to stand. All eyes are on me, which made me have another internal screaming episode. The flower girls lined the path with pink rose petals as the music started. I only took

Darwin’s POV“Look Lushan! You look like that fish!” Holding my fifth beer of the day, I immediately turned around to see Mariella teasing Lushan as she quickly pinched his cheeks. I never expected the two to see them here, the place where I ‘cloistered’ myself from everyone who knows me by drinking and weeping and plunging myself into deep thoughts, then drinking again. But with Mariella and Lushan’s presence…God, I never felt out of place as today. I pretended that I didn’t—I wasn’t in the bar in front of the large aquarium where several sea fauna were swimming before everyone’s eyes. “Oh really?” Lushan challenged. “You look like that puffer fish over there.” Mariella nudged his elbow. I am not single. In fact, I have a fiancée. But why the hell do I feel so goddamn small and lonely and unloved compared to these two? I’ve been a coward. I know that. I also know that I have been a jerk towards Minerva during our company out

  • Paid to the Billionaire   Chapter 47

Minerva’s POVShe was engaged to Damon, my soon to be father-in-law. I glanced at Cyrene, who was under the flowerless tree. In her arms was my child, Hemera Lou. It has been three months since I've been admitted to the hospital and I just managed to be discharged an hour ago. The sky is gray, as gray as the stone that rests atop the bed where Derrick eternally rests. I don’t care if it’s drizzling. I don’t care if I get wet as long as Cyrene and Hemera don't. I don’t give a damn if it will rain because, in my eyes, the world has long since been raining. Even with Darwin’s sunshine smile and moonbeam eyes, you can never keep rain from coming in my life. That no matter how bright the world is, one can never stop a rain from pouring. For after every rain, there is sunshine. And in every bright sunny day comes a cold and chilling rainy afternoon. People keep saying that I should move on. Yes, I have moved on. I definitely have a

Cyrene’s POVThe camera is still on and everything is recorded live. E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. Everything was unexpected, disheartening, and a shitful, goddamn surprise. Jocelyn was full of surprises, as she had always been. But her tearful confessions earlier…it’s like watching a telenovela that I didn’t even anticipate to watch. I watched her vanish on that door and checked the comments on my live stream that I even forgot to turn—it was a good thing also that I didn’t, frankly speaking. It has reached a fucking two hundred thousand views in just a matter of hour. I was astonished, flabbergasted, and gaping that even an elephant could fit in my mouth. I pressed stop and ended the live stream. I closed my laptop and grabbed my phone while I dial a number. Yet, I was confused on what number I should call. Should I call Darwin? Damon? The police? The mental hospital? I should probably call Minerva for a warning. “Hello?

Cyrene’s POVI got to start booktubing now. My fellow bookworms are waiting for me to talk live about the book I recently read, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I fixed my camera and the light, as well as other things I need to set up as I am new to this bookworm world. I only used to stand naked and have sex on camera back to the days when giving and providing pleasure is the reason why I manage to prepare a food on my table every meal and every day. I am glad I was able to escape from that living prison and I am now finally doing what I love and what seems ‘acceptable’ to the society. I clicked live and started filming. I greeted my audience first and stated my objectives for this live video as what I’ve read on a blog article. I may look like an idiotic whore who is forcing myself to be a booktuber but I am doing everything I could. I am exerting efforts that I cannot even imagine to give. I am willing to learn everythin

Minerva’s POVMariella is bearing little Hemera in her arms. I just recently woke up after a day and a half, and I immediately saw the two of them. I looked to the left and I found Darwin sleeping soundly on the coffee-colored couch. “How’s little Hemera?” I asked. Mariella Chu’s brows rose. “Hemera?” I tried to sit up but my head ended up falling back to the pillow. “Yes. Her name is Hemera Lou.” A shock look on her face made me cackle. “Why? You didn’t expect that we’ll name her sooner?” We because Darwin and I named her. In fact, it was only him who named her. I just added Lou as her second name, derived from my favorite young adult book series, Serpent & Dove. I glanced at him and I forced a smile. “How are you after that—“ I took a breath, a pause before continuing. ”That rejection of your offer?” Why do I make it sound like Mariella is offering me a huge business deal and I simply jus
