CHAPTER 4

The elevator doors opened like welcoming arms as Liam Right crossed the marble floor of the office building in Lower Manhattan. Not having to wait for an elevator during the Monday morning rush was always a good sign. It was going to be one of those great days when everything went his way.

When the doors opened again to deposit him on the twenty-fifth floor and the “CareShields Ins. Group” offices, he was already moving.

         Life has never been better!

After four years of hard work for the most prestigious insurance company in Downtown New York City, he’d had a few subtle hints dropped his way about a vice presidency coming vacant when Eric Hall retired.

Liam was now more than ready to be the youngest Vice President in the company’s history.

As he strode to his office, Liam enthusiastically greeted his private assistant.

“Good morning, my dear Robyn.”

“Good morning, Liam.”

Robyn Loggins was one of the most efficient private assistants he knew inside the company. In her early fifties, she was the one keeping him with his feet on the ground and eyes on the prize. Robyn was probably the closest to a stroke of sheer luck he’d ever had in his career.

They respected each other’s work ethics, and operated as an efficient team, a true “Dream Team”, and Liam knew that one day when he was president of “CareShields Ins. Group”, she’d still be his right hand.

A partnership like that doesn’t come along very often.

They were a match made in heaven… professionally speaking, of course.

“Listen, I know you’re not a fan of last-minute changes, but I had to make a couple to your schedule today. The ‘Zurich Financial Group’ asked if you could make it at two instead of three. I said yes, and I shuffled some things around, so you could meet them.”

“You did great! Thanks, Roby.”

He scratched his nose. It was itchy with sunburn after a weekend sailing where he’d played hot doctor with a steamy nurse from Philadelphia who’d kept him too busy to think about using sunscreen to protect his skin.

Well, too busy to think at all.

She just went on and screwed his brains out.

“Oh, and you had five phone calls from a woman named…”

Robyn made a suggestive break before giving him the last part of the information.

“Jazzy.”

“A new client? Did Jazzy leave a last name?”

         Robyn smiled thinly.

“Let me put it this way… ‘boss’: I don’t think this Jazzy character is interested in an insurance policy… At least, not that type of insurance, if you catch my drift.”

“Jazzy… Jazzy... Oh, ‘that’ Jazzy!”

She was a flight attendant he’d had some fun with, ‘helping’ him enjoy the mile-high club for the fifth time that month, but who clearly, wanted more from the relationship than he was willing to give.

“I don’t know why she called here. I specifically told her not to call me at the office.”

He never gave out his office number to women he hooked up with, but it wasn’t hard to track him down. A simple G****e search did the trick.

“If she calls again, tell her…”

“Oh, no, no, honey. You know very well that I’m not playing this game with you. It’s stipulated in my contract. So, if ‘our’ valiant Jazzy calls again, I’ll put her right through, and I’ll let you handle your own mess… ‘Comprende… jefe’?”

“Ok, you’re right… I have to talk to her myself…”

“So, just for my own fun, enlighten me… This weekend, you didn’t get sunburned with Jazzy, right?”

“Nope. I sailed with a gorgeous blonde named Adriana,” he replied, chuckling in memory. “She’s got the body of a model, but she’s a nurse, and she is a lot of fun… As a matter of fact, I will…”

Robyn was looking over his shoulder and suddenly interrupted him.

“I’m so glad to hear that, boss. There’s no wonder you two clicked the way you did!” she exclaimed. “She is quite a doll. Trust me, you two are the perfect couple. Your fiancée was made for you, believe me.”

If Robyn was talking so much and so enthusiastically about ‘his fiancée’, it could only mean one thing, which was confirmed when an older man’s voice hailed him.

“Hello, Liam! Do you have a minute? It’s been a while since we had a conversation.”

Liam turned to greet Howard Shields, the President and CEO of the insurance company.

“Of course, Howard. Come on in, please.”

“You’re sunburned,” the older man remarked. “Where were you and your fiancée off to this weekend?”

Liam felt Robyn’s eyes burning into his back like twin laser beams of disapproval. Sure, it wasn’t a good idea to tell lies to the big boss, even if they were just little white ones, but Liam was confident his reasoning was sound.

“In the Hamptons, Howard. We went sailing. The weather was absolutely magnificent, so we took advantage of it.”

He led his boss and the CEO of the company into his office, where they settled around a small conference table. Liam kept his space shipshape. The only personal touches were his framed MBA degree, his current insurance industry designations, and on his desk, a photo of him lovingly hugging a blonde beauty.

The only thing people could see was the back of her head, but Liam was laughing into the camera, and they were clearly having a good time. Howard gestured to the photograph.

“And how is that lovely girl of yours? I trust everything is good?”

Liam had been talking about ‘his fiancée’ for months, ever since he’d heard rumors of Hall’s imminent retirement. He knew that “CareShields Ins. Group” had an unwritten rule: no one, male or female, got promoted to the position of Vice President of the company if she or he wasn’t married.

The vice presidents were expected to entertain clients both at home and abroad, and for that reason, Howard and Gregory, his brother, who ran the company, preferred that the vice presidents, both male and female, be part of a couple.

Liam figured he’d fudged the lines on a few rule books, and he was determined to do the same with this. So, he’d started mentioning things about ‘his fiancée’. Casual mentions. He’d come to work on a Monday and talk about the weekend he and his lovely soon-to-be wife had spent in San Francisco. Or the quick trip they’d taken to the Barbados.

“More than good. She is just wonderful, Howard,” he answered, smiling. “So kind and so loving. She gives my life new meanings. And how about Amanda and the kids? Are they in good health?”

“Just perfect.”

They chatted for a while about college decisions for the twin boys and a new path away from the insurance world for the youngest member of the Shields family.

“Liam, listen,” Howard said, “we would like to celebrate your engagement. As you know way too well, we are a family business and, let’s face it, we are all involved in each other’s lives, especially at the executive level. We’ve got a board dinner coming up. I want you to come along and bring your wonderful fiancée with you.”

For Liam, to be invited to a dinner with the members of the board was a huge honor and an extremely important sign. It meant he was being looked over by the board members before he was offered the Vice President position. Yes! It was really happening… He was going to be the youngest Vice President in the history of “CareShields Ins. Group”! And that’s when Liam got it. It wouldn’t be him under scrutiny. Howard and the board members wanted to make sure he was marrying the right kind of woman, the perfect one to become a “CareShields” vice president’s spouse. Liam considered himself a glass-half-full kind of guy, but right now he felt like that glass had fallen off the table and smashed to pieces on the floor, spilling all his hard work and dreams of promotion with it.“An engagement dinner?!” His voice sounded a little higher-pitched than usual as he frantically tried to think of a way out.“Yes, Liam. We’ve never met your

“I’m going to see Billie… Finally!” she mumbled and took a deep breath. Maxima paid the cab fare and started walking quickly toward one of the most exclusive bars in the Upper East Side. Manhattan was not her favorite spot to have a drink and decompress after a shitty day at work, but having a drink and a chat with her best friend in the whole white world was all she needed. This was their first meeting in four years and the excitement was significant. Since she came back from Italy, all Maxima tried to do was to find some sort of balance between two aspects of her reality: her new job and her new life. But all her attempts were doomed to fail. She hated her boss, a pompous ass who didn’t know the first thing about great food, and she hated her rented apartment. But, most of all, Maxima hated being back in a city so different from Florence. The only thing brightening her return to New York, has been getting in touch with Billie Right, her ‘sister from anoth

‘I must find the perfect fake Mrs. Right or kiss my promotion and my job goodbye.’ Liam was pretty good at staying cool under pressure. In his experience, things usually worked out fine. Maybe he needed to work a little longer, push a bit harder, find a way around a blocked path. But, in the end, the solution would come out. Nonetheless, this was different. He’d stretched out the date of the engagement dinner as far as he could, but it was fast approaching, and the main character was still missing. Having to produce a suitable fiancée in a few days… How was he supposed to do that without stumbling across a magic lamp or selling his soul to the devil himself? And not just any girl would do. This one would be under scrutiny from the top brass, the board, and their spouses. Liam had mentally reviewed every woman he could think of, scoured his social media, his personal contact lists, and his old ‘black book’, but none of the women he

That name… For the past four years, Maxima’s face and last words kept hunting his dreams from time to time. That last night, before her departure from Scarsdale, he did the most absurd things of all. After the party and after taking a shower, still a bit drunk, he went to her house, kissed her, and asked her to stay, acting like a damn fool who had just had some strange epiphany. She said no… obviously and kicked him out of her house. But those words she said to him, her disapproval, her refusal to come to New York with him, dug a large hole in his very essence, in his male pride, making it hard for him to find the perfect woman… the perfect ‘Mrs. Right’. Liam never told Billie or anyone else about Maxima’s refusal or about the kiss they'd shared. He never saw a reason in opening his heart and mind to the women in his family, allowing them to see the damage that the young woman, his sister’s dull friend, had been capable of accomplishing with ju

“So? Am I a genius or what?” Billie exclaimed, sounding ridiculously pleased with herself. Another long second of silence passed. The coffee shop was busy with midmorning traffic, moms with kids in strollers, older folks with crossword puzzles, and a large noisy table that seemed to be some walking club. The steaming hiss of the espresso machine punctuated the babble of voices.“What did you just say?” Maxima finally managed to respond. She’d spent the morning looking at two hopeless places to rent, one where a cat came to greet her at the door and her eyes started watering before she could even cross the threshold, and the other with a supposed non-smoking roommate who seemed to think that joints didn’t count. They’d met at a coffee shop in the area. Billie looked pleased with the purchase of an old cookbook filled with recipes for dishes from all over the world, a gift for Maxima. Maxima Davenport, the chef recently returned to the States after spending the last four years in Italy. Liam had no idea what she was like now. ‘Yes, Liam, it is. Tougher than you can possibly imagine.’ Maxima couldn’t believe she said those words out loud. Liam looked so hurt at her words that she wanted to take them back. Say something else… a white lie, maybe. But Maxima was essentially an honest person, and tough didn’t even begin to describe what it was going to be like to spend an entire weekend with Liam when everyone thought they were an engaged couple. It was bad enough to share an apartment that he was rarely in. What would it be like if they had to share a room? Or the same bed? The kiss was still tingling on her lips, and in truth, she’d barely tasted the food she’d worked so hard preparing. All Maxima could taste was Liam. If she could turn the experience of kissing him into a flavor, she’d be the most successful caterer in history. Who could resist the taste of passion? Why hadn’t she said ‘no’ when this ridiculous charade was first suggested

Max, this is fantastic,” he said thickly. “I kinda hated crab… up until now.”“Thank you! I’m glad you like it,” she said, taking a sip from her glass. “So… my presence was a success… Great!”“They all loved you. Howard is convinced you’d be the perfect hostess at any company function. He’s beside himself with excitement.” Howard Shields wasn’t the only one beside himself with excitement, and Liam got the feeling his fake future wife had picked up

“Honey, I’m home!” Liam felt like an idiot announcing his presence in his own house, but he didn’t want to startle his temporary roommate. He stepped inside and felt his nostrils quiver. What was that amazing smell?“Hi, Liam!” a cheerful voice answered him. “You’re home early.” He put down his briefcase. He’d never thought of his home as cold before, but walking into it now, Liam noticed a huge difference. The space felt warm, lived-in, and whatever that woman was cooking, his stomach wanted some. Dragging his tie off, Liam moved closer to his kitchen. He had never thought a woman could look so sexy in an apron. The image reminded him of moms and old ladies at Christmas dressed as Mrs. Claus. But on Maxima? The red-and-white striped apron was about the sexiest thing he’d ever seen. Liam stared in amazement. Never had there been so much activity in his kitchen so long as he’d lived here. He’d grilled the odd steak, and a woman or

Four days after she’d moved into Liam’s place, she was already experimenting, cooking with recipes she knew as she got comfortable with the stove and playing with the ingredients to try new, original combinations.“Girl, you are a freaking food genius!” Billie swallowed, trying to control herself, and gave in, reaching for another tartlet.“I know you needed a guinea pig, and I was happy to help, but this is my last one. That was it? ‘Okay’? Maxima had no idea why, but she kinda felt let down. He hadn’t tried very hard to argue her out of her position. And not that she’d have caved, but it would have felt good to know she was so desirable he’d make an issue out of wanting to sleep with her. She supposed he’d find another willing partner to play his games easily enough that not getting into her bed wasn’t going to bother him very much. How depressing… She hadn’t even been entirely honest. She’d slept with men she knew she didn’t love, but she’d always felt more than mere friendship, she supposed. And more than simply lust. And Maxima hadn’t been sharing living quarters with them at the time. Fortunately, since she couldn’t think of anything to talk about and her companion didn’t seem interested in starting a new subject of conversation, the cab pulled up in front of a wonderful building on the Upper East Side. The area was quite nice, and full of up
