The Elder’s Bargain
The elder stood tall at the door, her stature was impressive. Her silver hair fell around her shoulders, catching the faint light of the room to appear almost iridescent, and her eyes were a pale luminous that boar through Luna with intensity. Alec, Kade, and Jax all tensed with various expressions of caution and respect. And Luna recognized that this woman was the real deal, and felt her instincts status from within her—she was not to be trifled with. “Who are you,” Alec demanded, steady but cautious. The elder's eyes flicked toward him; her expression elusive. "I am Seraphina," she said, her voice silky and authoritarian. "And I'm here because I want to hang out in this place for a bit." Luna swallowed. She trying to think and be serious. "You are the one? The one they said might know how to stop the Nightborne?" Seraphina's eyes returned to Luna. "Yes. But knowledge does not come without a price." Luna's heartbeat quickened. "What kind of price?" Seraphina moved into the room, her form was fluid and latent. "Knowledge is never shared without contingencies." "Of course there are," Alec muttered under his breath, yet he did not stand against her. Seraphina's gaze was keen in her search through the room. " I have heard a whisper of a moon bearer, of untapped power. I have stood face to face, yet was tricked into thinking you fear. The Nightborne have shown interest and in turn disturbed the balance. The consequences are mine." Jax crossed his arms, showing weighty interest enveloped in frustration. "We have no time for games. What is it you want? " “Your focus is on a place where I can see the potential.” Seraphina's gaze rested on Jax a moment longer before shifting it once again back to Luna. "You want protection. I will give you this if you are willing to support me instead." Luna raised her brows in surprise, “be of support? with what?” Seraphina's gaze turned sharp. For a brief moment, Luna could see a flicker in her being—treasonously ominous and ancient, violent at heart—all the signs of its power. "There is a relic possessed deep within the forest inside the ruins of an old temple. And the relic is powerful, but lost and I need it—again—for the balance to remain between our world and the Nightborne." "Why in Trell's name would we help you?" Kade joined the conversation and pushed forward. “We don’t even know if you’re trustworthy.” Seraphina’s gaze met his, and there was a brief pause before she spoke. “It is not like I leave you a choice. The Nightborne are closing in, and if you don’t act quickly, then your fate will be sealed, along with Luna’s.” Luna felt a trickle of sweat go down her forehead. “What happens if we don’t get the relic?” Seraphina’s lips twisted into a thin smile. “The power of the relic may demonstrate equilibrium, or lead to chaos. Without it, everything will favor the Nightborne, and you will be at their mercy. The choice is yours: help me and hope for a chance to survive, or don’t help me and surely perish.” Luna looked to Alec, Kade, and Jax, searching their faces for reassurance of any kind. Alec’s eyes conveyed both concern and determination while Kade looked grim and resigned and Jax’s expression was a hard line, showing something serious that she was not altogether used to from him. After what seemed like an eternity, Alec finally said, his voice strong, “We’ll do it. But you have to tell us everything, no more secrets.” Seraphina inclined her head slightly, her expressions neutral, “Very well. I will help you, but understand that the journey is dangerous, and you should prepare yourself for whatever lies before you.” Luna took a deep breath, trying to center herself. “Tell us everything we need to know.” Seraphina was intense, almost piercing as she began the explanation. “The temple you seek is hidden deep in the forest and protected by wards. You’ll have to bypass those wards to gain access to the relic. However, know this: the Nightborne are not the only concern. There are beings bound to the relic’s powers, and they will not be happy about your interrupting their presence.” "Wonderful," Jax muttered. "Just what we need." "Yes." Seraphina stayed dry in his response. "All you and the others need to do is to navigate the multiple twisting, winding passages of your temple and face whatever guardians the ancients have left to guard the relic. I will not be with you but will offer a map and directions." She removed some old parchment from her cloak, and carefully took her time to get it fully unfolded, and with experience laid it out flat on the table. The map was filled with all sorts of odd symbols and markings - enough to make Luna's head dizzy. "This map will show you where to go - It won't follow you all the way there," Seraphina explained. "In the end, you will have to vet instinctively to move forward, along with your rising power." Alec examined the map closely. "This has a lot to compete with too. We have to prepare for this - this is a full-scale operation." "Prepare how you feel fit," Seraphina replied. "But please, do not delay - Time is of the essence." As Seraphina turned to leave, before she got to the door, she turned and glanced back over her shoulder at Luna. "One more thing," she stated, with so much weight - "the power you seek to control is not simply defensive. It can quite literally change the core of your entire being - Watch how you wield it." With that, she left, and her presence returned to the night, as she disappeared into the darkness. The room fell deafeningly quiet. Luna stood and stared into the map - Her mind racing and overwhelmed at the enormity of what they had agreed to. Alec, Kade, and Jax were continuing a conversation about the preparations they would need - Their voices lost in the somewhat quiet in the room. She felt a hand on her shoulder, and turned to find Alec, as he gave her a serious look. "We need to talk," he said, quietly. "Come with me." Without waiting for her answer, Alec striding past her and led her out, away from the others inside. The cold night air was a refreshing contrast for her to the overwhelming tension inside the cabin. They walked a little ways to a small opening in the trees behind the house, where moonlight filtered down through the scattered branches and leaves. "Do you want to talk about it?" Alec said softly, but it still conveyed concern. Luna took a breath and tried to calm the nerves bubbling up by planting her feet firmly on the ground. "I'm not sure I'm ready for this. I mean, how can I face risking myself for something this powerful? Especially with everything that's been going on." Alec's gaze remained unwavering, which was reassuring at this moment. "You are a lot stronger than you think Luna! We've already seen what you can do! You have the power, and you have us! We'll do whatever it takes to thrive." Luna looked up at Alec, with her heart clinched in uncertainty. "What if I fail? And we are not able to get the relic in time?" "Then we will keep fighting," Alec said strongly. "We will do whatever it takes to protect you, or to stop the Nightborne. But we have to believe we can do it, if we don't, then we are already lost." Luna found herself nodding along, recognizing her fortitude. "Okay then, let's do it. Find the relic, and stop the Nightborne." Alec softened a bit and placed a hand on her shoulder. "We will make it through this, together." As they walked back across around the cabin, she felt her resolve return again. There was no denying that the road ahead would be fraught with danger and uncertainty, but she had by her side Alec, Kade, and Jax, and they would tackle that road together. As she lifted her gaze to the moon, it shone its sickly light on the forest, and she couldn’t get rid of the notion that something darker was hiding even more in the shadows. And as they prepped to leave on their dangerous journey, Luna was certain of one thing: The real conflict had just begun. The early first distill of light barely touched the forest floor as Alec, Kade, Jax, and Luna packed the last of their supplies. There was tension and buildup for the impending journey ahead. They had laid out the map that Seraphina had given them on a makeshift table, its odd symbols and characters, looming darkly over them whilst they packed.Alec rolled the map up and locked it up in a waterproof tube. “We should head now,” Alec stated confidently. “The sooner we start, the sooner we can get it done with.”Kade echoed in as he nodded, crossing his arms. “If we've got food, water, and maybe some basic gear... we can only hope that it is good enough.” Jax was penning in the rest of his items; his movements were deserving and pristine. “We just need to be careful. Seraphina was not out of her mind about the dangers.” Luna had secured her pack on her shoulder, took a deep gentle breathing process, re-entering a deep level of breathing. She knew this journey was going to be another ch
The forest was alive with morning sounds as Alec, Kade, Jax, and Luna wound their way back to the cabin. The early light filtered through the trees and cast pockets of shadows on the ground. Before long, they had returned to the cabin. The warmth and security of the little shelter was a welcome change from the oppressive silence and threat of danger in the old temple. They regrouped in the main room, the glowing relic sitting heavy and silent in its case on the table. Alec paced, his mind processing what had so abruptly closed the door behind them. Kade sat against the back wall, watching the relic. Jax leaned against the wall beside the fireplace, staring into the fire.Luna dropped into one of the chairs at the table, needing the support behind her and the extra comfort it could provide. She let out a ragged breath, her body and mind wanting to collapse entirely. The relic shimmered slightly in the reflected firelight, and she had to squint a little against its glow. It was beautifu
A shadowy haze enveloped the sky as Alec, Kade, Jax, and Luna arrived on the outskirts of the forest where they were supposed to perform the ritual. There was a tangible tension among them. Only two days remained until the full moon, and that basically meant that all their hopes were hanging on the unlocking of the relic power to stand a chance against the Nightborne. The place they decided upon was an ancient clearing in the interior of the forest. The clearing was, as they were told, a place of power, an ancient sacred site of rituals centuries old, where the wolves of yore had interceded. As they stepped into the clearing, the air seemed almost to hum with digitized energy, and it felt as though the very ground had recognized its intended purpose. The sun illuminated the trees while long shadows traversed the floor, all knowing that the full moon was about to rise."This should be a good spot for the ritual," Alec said, with a low and thoughtful voice as he took a look around.Luna
Morning unfurled across the forest, yet the unease of the night before had not left Luna. The clearing buzzed with life as she stepped out of her tent. The serious, hushed tones of Alec and Kade's exchange filled the air. Jax was a little farther away, sharpening the blade of a knife while watching the perimeter; it was a ritual that had always seemed to calm him when it felt like trouble was brewing.Luna felt considerably weighted down by what she had talked to Jax about the previous night. His vision of that forest burning, her vanishing, gnawed on the inside of her like an insistent whisper of doom. As much as she wanted to dismiss it, the fear of a ritual getting out of hand bore down on her."Morning." Alec's voice interrupted her thoughts as he stood some distance away, offering her a reassuring smile. "How do you fare?" Luna half-heartedly ducked her head, trying to shake off her anxiety. "I didn't sleep much.""None of us did," Alec said, unsparingly. He waved his hand towar
Luna Rivers narrowed her glare at the heavens, observing as dark clouds obscured the last semblance of the dying sun. The light faded quickly, throwing long veins of exploring shadows through the dense forest that flanked her new home. In her current surroundings, she had yet to see another living soul, which felt remarkably jarring, though also oddly… right. The old cabin sat at the end of a forgotten road and was entombed somewhere deep in the mountains; it was some… five miles from the nearest town. The cabin was bequeathed to her by her parents; even as they were alive they had not once brought the property to her attention. Luna only discovered the deed after their untimely passing and it was buried in the drawers of her mother’s desk as though it was a family secret taken to the grave. And here I am, in front of the cabin with my suitcase at my feet, both apprehensive and hopeful. Luna's life had gone through a rough patch of unfortunate events. She had lost her parents in a fr
Luna’s heart raced as she stood frozen in the middle of the cabin. The name "Ronan" echoed in her mind like a bell, a chill of fear washed over her. She didn’t know who or what Ronan was, but the fear in the man’s voice was undeniable. “Who is Ronan?” Luna asked, timidly. Silence. The only sound came from the noise crackling in the fire. That warmth felt very far away from the danger she suspected was outside.Another knock, softer this time, then the voice returned. “Open the door, Luna. We need to talk. We don’t have a lot of time.” Her fingers tightened around the blankets around her shoulders, tightening all the fear swelling inside. All her instincts screamed for her to run, but she didn’t know where to go. She didn’t know the forest. The nearest town was miles away. These men or whatever they were seemed to know her, and if they knew her name, what else had they figured out? Luna swallowed hard. Her mind raced through the options she had. Maybe she could get out the back and
The night air hit Luna like a cold slap as she stepped out of the cabin, her backpack slung over her shoulder. The trees appeared tall and dark with their branches twisting like skeletal arms against the bright full moon. She could feel the men walking behind her, the footfalls quiet but powerful.Alec walked ahead leading them into the thick of the forest. Jax was still close to her, scanning their surroundings with his eyes, and Kade walked last, maintaining silence that only added to the tension. Luna felt like she was walking into a trap, but wether it was the truth or not, staying at the cabin was just as dangerous. Maybe even more dangerous. She glanced at Jax, catching him looking back at her with a smirk. "Do you expect me to develop fur and howl at the moon?" He grinned teasingly, his tone earnest but light-hearted.Despite her erratic heartbeat, Luna was able to chuckle shakily. "I am trying not to think about it.""You really will get used to it," Jax replied with a smile,
The woods closed in as they moved deeper into them, the moon continuously spreading silvery rays across their pathway. She did her best to stay tight to Alec, trying to block out the trembling that ran through her body with each step. Whether the trembling caused by the cold or the remnants of the adrenaline that ran through her body from the fight, she could not tell. It smelled rich of pine and earth, but buried beneath it was something dark—something deadly. After what she thought was hours, Alec finally slowed. In front of them, the trees began parting. On the other side of the trees was an opening, with a large stone structure in the middle, with other smaller structures that blended in with the woods. The cabin was grand, rustic, and reminded her of some sort of imagination, and it felt as if it was ancient, sunk within the earth. "This is it," Alec said quietly, breaking the silence. "Welcome to our land." Luna's eyes widened as she took her surroundings in. The structure was
