But Luna couldn't look away. "But it looks like her. It sounds like her..."

"The Moonbearer has great potential," the figure—her mother’s apparition—said, her eyes glowing with an unnatural light. "But potential means nothing if you cannot control it. You are not yet worthy of the power you seek."

Luna shook her head. Her heart was pounding in her chest. “No. I… I am worthy. I can control it.”

"You're mistaken," the figure said, her voice rich with a profound resonance.

"Luna, you pose a threat to this world. You are its very foundation to ruin."

“Stop!” Alec shouted, pulling Luna backwards from the apparition that was getting closer to them. “This isn’t actually happening, Luna. It’s only a test. The Veil is testing you. Don’t believe in it.”

But Luna couldn’t look away from the shape of her mother. Those words pierced her heart. Key to its destruction. The exact words that had haunted her since learning about the prophecy.

“I don’t want this,” Luna whispered, the tears rising in he

“Who the hell are you?” Kade demanded, stepping forward, his blade raised:The figure laughed, a sound laced with bitter sarcasm. "You may call me Corvin. I've been waiting a long time for this moment to arrive."Luna’s blood ran cold. “Waiting for what?”"Then the truth shall come out," said Corvin as his hood fell back revealing a jagged angular face and piercing silver eyes. "And then you'll find out who your friends actually are."“What are you talking about?” Alec growled, his body tense.Corvin's eyes zeroed in on Alec and Jax, his grin spreading. “Oh, don’t pretend you don’t know. You know exactly what I’m talking about.”Luna’s heart pounded. “What is he saying?”Alec felt Luna's pain and shook his head. "Luna, don't listen to him. He's just trying to play with your mind."“Am I?” Corvin said, feigning ignorance. “Or am I simply revealing the truth they’ve been hiding from you all along?”Jax stepped forward, his jaw tight. "You don't know anything about us."Corvin raised a

Luna turned to Alec, her voice shaking. "What is he talking about?"Alec’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t answer.Jax stepped in, his voice calm but thick with guilt. "It's true. We swore to protect you, but... part of that oath was to keep certain things from you. Things about your parents and their connection to the prophecy. Luna, it's the same prophecy and truth that all these people are always referring to".Luna felt as if her heart was sinking. “You knew it? This whole time you knew it and said nothing. That is my pain”.“We didn’t want you to be burdened with it,–” Alec began with a pleading voice. “You already had so much trouble, Luna. We thought it was the correct decision to make.”“Right for who?” she snapped, her eyes blazing with anger. “For me or for yourselves?”Kade stepped forward. "Luna, they were trying to protect you. We all were. That doesn't make it right, but their intentions were good.""I don't care about intentions!" she yelled, her voice cracking. "I care abo

Corvin's smirk evapor, and for the first time, his face turned solemn. "The Moonbearer’s power is not a blessing, but a curse. To wield it is to become well beyond the norm, half the world more than likely would not recognize. It means sacrifices."“What sacrifices?” Luna demanded. He pointed to her friends. “The connections you’ve built. The life you’ve lived. The love you’ve discovered. It all could be lost.”Alec stepped forward, his voice resolute. "Luna, you need to listen to me. We're going to take on whatever we do together. Don't let him frighten you into the wrong choice."Corvin’s gaze flicked to Alec, and his silver eyes narrowed. “You say that now, but wait until she turns into something you can’t protect anymore. Something you can’t even begin to understand?”“I’ll take that risk,” Alec said without hesitation.Luna’s world turned to mud as she looked at the people who had shaped her world. Alec, Jax, Kade, even Morgana with her sick twist had been part of her story. And

“I already made my choice,” Luna said firmly.“Have you?” the figure asked, almost mournfully. “Your heart is divided. It carries the weight of loyalty, love, and trust. Yet beware—hearts that are divided cannot survive under the burden of the Veil.”Alec stepped forward, jaw set. “Leave her alone. She doesn’t need your cryptic warnings from some ghost.”The figure turned its glowing gaze toward Alec. "And you, Protector, what will you do when the Moonbearer's light burns too bright for you to stand beside her?"Alec’s expression darkened, but before he could retort, the figure turned its gaze to Jax. “And you, Guardian of the Spirit. For how long will you mask your insecurities with wit?”Jax flinched, his mask of confidence faltering.“And Kade,” the figure said, turning to the silent warrior. “Do you ever intend to release the shackles of guilt, or will it drag you down into the darkness?”“Enough!” Luna shouted, her voice slicing through the tension. “You don’t know us. "Thank you. All of you."Before anyone could respond, the ground beneath them trembled a bit and there was a faint sound of a distant drum.“Now what?” Jax muttered, drawing his weapon. The mist in front parted to reveal a huge stone door covered with delicate symbols that appeared to glow faintly.“The Veil’s core,” Morgana whispered, her expression uncharacteristically serious.Luna stepped forward, her heart pounding. “What’s behind it?”She caught Morgana’s gaze, and this time there was a sincere note in her voice that was unexpected. “The truth.”Her hand reached out to the door, without laying on it a voice as if it from nowhere pierced her heart.“Luna…” That was her mother's

"Then how do we pass it?" Kade asked, his voice tight with barely suppressed anger."We face it," Luna said, stepping forward despite Alec’s protest. Her voice steadied as she spoke to the figures. "If you’re here to test us, then let us prove ourselves. No more games."The figures all seemed to tilt their heads slightly, as if pondering her words. At last, one spoke. "Very well, Moonbearer, but know this: truth is a two-edged sword."The shadows receded a bit, but not enough to feel safe. The room changed again. This time, it was an oval arena with walls lined with mirrors. Each reflected a distorted version of their faces: anguish, rage, and despair."Choose," the voices said. "Look into the mirror that calls to you, and face what you fear most."Luna hesitated, her heart racing. The others were throwing worried looks around the group."This is insane," Jax said softly, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides."No," Luna whispered, matching his gaze. If it bleeds, we can kill it.”“It doesn’t have blood, Kade!” Morgana said sharply, tugging a charm from her pocket. “It’s a manifestation of the Veil’s power. Normal weapons won’t do any good.”“Then what will?” Jax asked, his voice edged with panic.Morgana looked at Luna. "Her association with the moon. That's the only thing powerful enough to cast it out."“Are you sure?” Luna asked, her voice wavering.“No,” Morgana confessed, narrowing her eyes. “But we don’t have time to doubt. Some magic trick to yank her out of the void?""Got a better idea?" Alec snapped impatiently.Just as Kade was about to respond, a faint light shimmered into view in the atmosphere over them, and there was silence as they watched the light shape itself into a form."Luna?" Jax whispered in disbelief, hope glimmering in his voice. But it wasn't Luna. The shape revealed itself to be a spectral entity, its face obscured by a hood."You have trespassed too deeply," the figure spoke, and its voice rang out like a choir of whispers."Who are you?" Alec asked forcefully, stepping forward."I am Guardian of the Veil," it stated, glancing at the group. "What you have done has upset the balance. The Moonbearer's interference has awakened dark forces that are beyond suppression.""Then bring her back!" A

Luna felt the chaos strike her with the force of a blow, an acrid air foul with smoke, blood, and fear, as villagers ran in all directions screaming, with shadow wolves leaping from the shadows.Alec was going on all fours with a howl that cut through the din. A call to chambers echoed to ready their allies."Spread out!" Ronan yelled, already in action as he hacked at a shadow wolf. "Protect the villagers!"Selene grabbed Luna's arm. "Stick close. Malachai wants you, and he'll not have you on our watch.”"I won't just stand by!" Luna said, clutching the shining relic."Then don't," Selene huffed, pulling release. "But don't make it easy for him to drag you close."A little more confidence; Luna nodded, holding faster to the relic, feeling warm to her fingertips but with an insistent thrum to it.Jax stood alongside her, with two daggers in hand. "You got this, Moonbeam," he said, handing a smile that was rare and sincere. "Don't be fooled, you have us." Before she could answer, a sh

Luna could feel them looking at her, waiting, anticipating. Taking a shaky breath, she said, "We can't fight them alone. We have to rally the other Packs."Ronan crossed his arms; it didn't show what he was thinking. "That's asking for a lot, Luna. Convincing Crescent Ridge Pack to help was one thing. Uniting all the Packs is a whole other battle.""Then we'll fight it," she said forcefully. "Because if we don't, none will survive."Ronan gave her a long considering look and slowly nodded. "All right. I'll send word out. But you had better be ready to lead. In order for them to listen to you, you'll have to show them." Luna nodded, determination hardening her heart. "I will do it."As the Packs was tending to their wounded and regrouping, Alec pulled her aside and searched her eyes."You good?" he softly asked."I don't know," she admitted, voice trembling. "That power felt like it wasn't just me that it was all about. Like it was bigger than me. Like the moon itself was guiding me."

Luna held her ground. "I think you do care about your pack. Enough to put your pride behind and do what has to be done."For a moment, both Alphas held each other’s gaze in a silent war of command. At last, Ronan huffed and took a step back.“Fine,” he said. “We’ll hear you out. But if this is a trick, there won’t be enough of you left to regret it.”Luna nodded, and relief washed over her, though she didn’t let it show. “Fair enough.”Ronan waved his hand to tell the wolves to stand down, and Kade whispered, “Isn’t he just so charming?”Jax nudged him with an elbow. "Let's just get through this without starting another war, okay?"The Crescent Ridge wolves led them to a large clearing where a huge bonfire burned. The Packs were seated in two separate clusters, separated by an invisible line of distrust.Ronan spoke to his Pack with a commanding voice. "Listen up. We're supposedly fighting shadow wolves and this—" he gestured to the relic in Luna's possession, "key to defeating them.

Kaelde crossed his arms. "Fine. Let's say she's right about the timing. That doesn't explain why Luna is this supposed savior. What makes her so special?"“Kade,” Alec warned, his tone low.“No, it’s okay,” Luna interjected, looking straight into Kade’s eyes. “I’ve been asking myself that too. I don’t have all the solutions or answers but one thing I am sure of: I’m not backing down. Not now.”Kade held her gaze for a moment before he looked away, his shoulders tense. "Hope you're ready to back it up."“Enough,” Selene said, her voice slicing through the tension. “We need to concentrate. If the eclipse is in two nights, we don’t have any time to waste.”Jax tilted his head and squinted as he thought. “We’re going to need allies. Shadow wolves can’t be any better than they sound, and we sure don’t want to face them alone.”"Who is going to help us?" Alec asked. "The Packs are scattered. Half of them don't even trust each other anymore."“What about the Crescent Ridge Pack?” Selene of

Whatever it took from you, we are here, and we aren't going anywhere."“Speak for yourself,” Kade muttered, earning a glare from Alec.“Kade, not now,” snapped Selene, stepping forward. Her voice was steady but had a sharpness to it. “Luna’s been through something and no one else is pointing fingers.”“Pointing fingers?” Kade narrowed his eyes. “I’m not pointing fingers. I said we’ve followed her blindly, and now she’s supposedly the heir to the moon? We deserve some answers, don’t we?”"I didn't ask for any of this!" Luna retorted, rising to her feet. Her voice rang in the cavern, silencing everyone. "Do you think this was my choice? Losing my parents, having my life turned upside down? I'm trying to figure this out just as much as you are!"The room fell into a heavy silence.Jax interrupted, his voice soft yet authoritative. "She's correct. None of us volunteered for this, but we all share the burden. Luna has been the

As Luna’s surroundings changed, the silver landscape faded away into the past. She was once again in her childhood home, where her mother’s cooking was all that could fill an empty room. The warm glow of the fireplace filled the room and she almost felt it for a moment.“Luna, sweetheart, can you grab the salt?” her mother’s voice called from the kitchen. She felt her chest tighten as she pivoted towards the sound. And there was her mother, alive and smiling, it was almost like the tragic night before never occurred.“Mom?” Luna’s voice cracked as tears welled in her eyes. Her mother turned, wiping the tears from her eyes with her apron. “What is it dear? You look like a person who has seen an apparition in daylight.”"I..." Luna faltered in her words. She wanted to run to her, hug her, and never let go but a flicker of doubt held her back.“Do you know where you are, Luna?” The wolf’s voice echoed faintly, far away yet close.Luna clenched her fists. That light and a bit of behavior it's reacting to it's warning you the power of the moon is unraveling and if you don't act soon it might take you with it."“Great,” Kade growled. “Another doom-filled prophecy. Just what we needed.”Selene stepped forward, her voice slicing through the tension. “Before we spiral further, let’s just take a moment to orient ourselves. We need to regroup and come up with our next move.”Alec nodded, keeping his arm around Luna. "Agreed. Luna's not in a state to make decisions right now. We need answers first."The group stood up, their surroundings slowly coming into focus. They were in an underground cave, the walls sparkling with wetness. Odd symbols were carved in the rock, meaning unknown."Doesn't anyone else feel like we're being watched?" Kade said softly, scanning the cavern with his eyes.“I’ve felt it since we landed,” Selene said, drawing her blade. “Stay sharp.”The air gre

The woman’s eyes sparkled with mirth. “I am merely a vessel, an echo of the relic’s authority. And in that, I speak for the moon's timeless knowledge.”Luna clenched her fists, raising her voice. “Stop with the riddles! If you have answers, just give them to me. Why are you doing this? What does the moon want from me?”The woman's expression softened, but she remained disturbing. "The moon chose you, Luna, because you are its essence in a human form. Its energy runs through your blood, mingled with the relic's enchantment. But such power comes with a price."“What cost?” Luna pressed, her frustration mounting."Sacrifice," the woman repeated. "The life you've known. The relationships you’ve built. Those would keep you here, but the moon wants freedom; to open its arms to you, you have to cut those chords."Alec’s voice broke the building tension. “She doesn’t have to do anything you say. The relic pulsed softly against her chest, its light feeble and intermittent. Shadows swirled around her as though animated, murmuring secrets that only she seemed to hear.“Luna,” Alec shouted, feeling relief rush through him. He stepped toward her, but Kade’s hand shot out and “Wait,” Kade warned, his voice low. “Something’s wrong.”Luna turned slowly, pale, and with tears down her cheeks. Her eyes were normally so bright but now they looked dull and haunted.“Luna,” Alec said again, his voice softer now. “What happened? Are you hurt?”She shook her head, her lips trembling. “I saw them.”“Who?” Selene stepped forward cautiously.“My parents,” Luna whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “And…” She faltered, eyes flicking to Jax.Jax froze, his face a mask of guilt.“An
