“Girl, you’ve been through a lot.”

Candice slurped her ramen noisily, twirling the noodles around her chopsticks with practiced ease. Beside her sat a can of flat Diet Coke just the way she liked it. Don’t ask me why. She’s just weird like that.

I sighed, rubbing my temples. “I don’t even know what to say, Candice. The whole thing is just so… bizarre.”

Leaning in, I tugged her ear playfully. “Promise me you won’t tell anyone about this, okay? Just between us.”

Candice snorted. “Girl, you think I’d go around spilling your Blackwood mansion drama? Please. Everyone already thinks you’re living the dream over there. And honestly?” She jabbed a chopstick at me. “It kinda looks like you are.”

If only she knew.

Two weeks. That’s how long I’d been trapped in that house since Nadia’s bizarre suicide, suffocating under the weight of grief and secrets I still didn’t understand. Nadia’s sudden death had left a heavy silence in the estate, the room she was discovered in, permanently sealed like a

We pulled up outside a bar in the Bronx. The place had an old, worn-down feel—flickering neon signs, scratched wooden floors, and the lingering scent of whiskey and regret. A slow, bluesy tune hummed from the jukebox, setting the mood. Behind the counter, a guy in a denim apron and nothing underneath, moved with the practiced ease of someone who’d seen too much. Braxton. Candice’s long-time, on-and-off boyfriend. The moment he spotted her, she gasped dramatically and launched herself at him. “Baby!” she squealed, arms wrapping around his neck. Braxton caught her effortlessly, chuckling. “Skipped work again, huh?” I rolled my eyes and let them have their moment, absently twisting the ring on my finger. A silent reminder of everything I’d signed up for. But tonight, I was off-duty. Slipping the ring off, I ran my thumb over the slight indent it left on my skin. As if on cue, my phone vibrated inside my purse. Again. Orbot. A long list of missed calls filled my screen,

“Alexander freaking Blackwood.” Candice let out an ear-piercing squeal, spinning on her heel like she was about to launch herself at him. Whatever she was trying to do, gush over him, maybe… went horribly wrong because she promptly lost her balance and crashed onto the ground in a heap, her short skirt riding up to expose black lace underwear. Jake, still processing the shock of everything, blinked before bending down to scoop her up. She slumped against him, mumbling something incoherent, completely oblivious to the tension crackling in the air. Alexander, on the other hand, hadn’t moved. He just stood there, his silver eyes locked onto mine—unblinking, unreadable. He wore a loose brown shirt with long sleeves and matching pants, an almost careless contrast to his usual sharp attire. I was surprised he wasn’t with his bodyguard. And suddenly, I felt it. Embarrassment. No. Humiliation. I was standing in a grimy alleyway, surrounded by drunk idiots, outside a rundown bar

I woke up with a pounding headache, my body sluggish and my mouth bitter as if I had swallowed regret overnight. What a stupid day yesterday was. Rolling out of bed, I shuffled toward the bathroom, my movements slow and mechanical. The cold water shocked my senses as I brushed my teeth and stepped into the shower, letting the heat loosen the tightness in my muscles. By the time I emerged, wrapped in a towel, the morning had fully settled in. I walked into the dressing room, scanning my options before settling on a long-sleeved blue dress with buttons running down the length to my legs. Simple, but elegant. Sliding into it, I glanced at the time it was already past eight. I checked my phone hoping to see a reply from candice but I didn’t get anything. I was going to have to call her soon afterall that’s what a real friend would do after leaving her in the arms of a typical stranger last night. Obviously, Alex is gone by now. That thought brought a small, relieved smile to my

Hello, Mom.” I stepped into the hospital ward, my voice soft as I took in the familiar sight. The open window let in a warm breeze, carrying the faint scent of antiseptic and fresh air. The couch in the corner. Mom looked cheerful, her cheeks slightly flushed as she chatted animatedly with the nurse. “Isla!” She beamed, lifting her arms toward me. I hurried over, embracing her tightly before pressing a kiss to her cheek. Gently, I placed a bouquet of daisies her favorite on the bedside table. “You look well,” I noted, watching the way her eyes sparkled as she batted her lashes, trying to look cute. Classic Mom. She was happy. She had no idea why I was really here. I had come to tell her about the Dubai trip—an announcement handed down by none other than my contract husband. And there was no way in hell I was going to agree to his condition. Still… maybe Dubai wasn’t such a bad idea. I needed the escape. After all, I was the one who had been assaulted by Drew an

Her frail hands trembled in her lap, clutching the hospital blanket as if it were the only thing anchoring her to this moment. I sat there, stunned, trying to process the words she had just dropped on me. Triplets. I was one of three children? The weight of it crushed me, and I felt an unfamiliar pit in my stomach. Everything I thought I knew about my past… about myself… was shattering. “It’s okay, Mom,” I whispered, reaching out to smooth the strands of hair falling over her forehead. But even I knew it wasn’t okay. Not really. Anger simmered beneath my skin… not just because of what she had endured, but because she had kept this from me for so long. If I hadn’t found out on my own, would she have ever told me? “What did you do, Mom?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Did you agree to his deal? Did you give him your children?” She met my gaze, eyes full of sorrow, her voice cracking as she spoke. “No, Isla. I didn’t.” She coughed weakly, and I instinctively p

There’s a saying: What you don’t know can’t hurt you. But that’s a lie. Ignorance isn’t bliss… it’s a slow death, creeping in the shadows until it swallows you whole. As the words left his mouth, he froze. His entire body went rigid, his breath halting as if he’d just swallowed something sharp. “What did you just say?” My voice was a whisper, but it cut through the air like a blade. Alex’s hands clenched into fists before one flew to his mouth as he mouthed the word “fuck” as if trying to shove the words back in. Regret flickered across his face, but it was too late. “Tell me, Alex. What did you say?” He turned to me, exhaling harshly. “Look, I’m sorry, okay? I’m so sorry about all of this. The whole damn situation.” I grabbed his arm before he could pull away, and he flinched at the contact. “She was screwing Drew, wasn’t she?” His silence was deafening. “Beatrice was fucking Drew.” I tightened my grip on his chin, forcing him to look at me. His usual steel-like compos

“This has to be a joke, right, Alex?” My voice wavered as I spoke, but Alexander didn’t look at me. Instead, he lowered his gaze to the documents in front of him, flipping a page with calculated indifference before signing. Then, standing, he walked around the desk and handed the signed document to the man claiming to be my father. Alex didn’t even glance in my direction as he returned to his seat. “I don’t understand. What is going on here?” My chest tightened, but I forced my voice to stay firm. “I’m your father,” the man repeated. I shifted my gaze to the woman beside him. My stomach twisted. “So that’s the bitch who tried to kill my mother. And I’m guessing she’s your wife?” My words dripped with venom. At that, the man smiled a knowing, almost amused expression. “No,” he corrected smoothly. “This is my sister, Felicia.” Felicia. The woman’s crimson nails glinted under the soft light as she smiled at me like I was some long-lost treasure. Where was his wife? The

Calling me an idiot right now? Completely valid. Honestly, what else do you call a girl who just discovered she has two birth sisters? A girl whose supposed husband….no, contract husband married her just to hand her over to a father she never even knew? A girl whose mother lied to her every single day of her life? Whose sister is a suspected maniac that possibly murdered someone in the same house she’s still living in? A girl who’s standing in the same room with the man who kept all these secrets— And kissing him? I didn’t even ask how he got to know about me. Didn’t stop to think about how much he already knew. I wasn’t asking the most reasonable questions, like: Where is Beatrice now? Is she being tracked by the authorities? Do they even know where she is? Does Beatrice know I’m here to replace her? Of course she knows. She must. Because that’s what I am, right? A stand-in. Kissing him. Pointlessly. Stupidly. To the point where his hands were

“If you strike with ease, it’ll land just where you want it… See?” Alex’s voice was low, almost bored. He swung his club smoothly, sending the golf ball sailing across the trimmed green. It landed near the flag without much effort. Of course it did. Because nothing ever missed when Alexander Blackwood was the one swinging. He stood shoulder to shoulder with a sharply dressed man whose name had flown over my head the moment we were introduced. He had a sharp accent, a polite smile, and a name that my Bronx tongue had fumbled within seconds. So I called him what I could in my head. ASIAN DUDE. Now, you might be wondering what the hell I was doing on a golf course at 5:30 in the afternoon, playing trophy wife to a man who barely looked in my direction unless it was for business. The answer was simple. Appearance. Turns out, the so-called “Asian dude in the suit” was no ordinary man. He was Alex’s late father’s personal lawyer. And judging by the stiff way Alex’s jaw ha

“If you don’t let me out this instant…” “Ma’am, please, you’re making this harder for yourself.” I spun around so quickly, I nearly bumped heads with Lucy. I had been trying to go see my mom at the hospital, but they wouldn’t let me leave the house. What the hell? “So I can’t leave this place? On whose orders? Oh, let me guess… Alex?” I asked, sarcasm dripping from my voice as anger bubbled up inside me. Who does he think he is? After everything, they’ve locked me in the same place where someone tried to kill me, and now I can’t even step outside? “Boss gave us strict instructions not to let you leave the house. Orbot isn’t around at the moment, so you’ll have to stay inside,” one of the guards said stiffly. “We’re sorry, ma’am. We’re just doing our job. We don’t want Boss to get angry.” With eyes blazing i focused on lucy. “can you see this?” I asked in disbelief. She kept her head bowed. “Ma’am, I seriously can’t do anything about it.” My voice cracked with accusati

“Have they found out who did it?” I asked, my voice low and scratchy as I strained my neck from the pillow, trying to sit up. A dull ache tugged behind my eyes, but I ignored it. I caught sight of Lucy emerging from the dressing room, dragging the hoover behind her like it weighed a ton. She avoided my eyes as she walked past the bed, heading toward the door with her back to me. “It was dark, from what I heard, ma’am. The person who drugged you… they turned off the power.” I frowned. “But how is that possible?” My voice was sharper now, edged with confusion. “They’d have to know this place inside out to even figure out where the breaker is.” Lucy paused at the door, hand gripping the frame, then looked over her shoulder. “Don’t stress yourself too much, ma’am. I’m sure Mr. Blackwood is sorting everything out with your father.” My stomach twisted. “Can you stop calling him that?” I muttered. “I only just found out he existed a few days ago, and you saw how that parasite of a sis

Something creaked open. I wasn’t sure if it was the door or a drawer, but I felt the subtle shift in the air, the tug at the edges of the room. Then, without warning, a burst of brightness spilled through my closed lids, painting the back of my eyes in a blinding orange hue. My face tensed, and my eyes squinted instinctively, trying to protect themselves from the light. But the curtains… they were open now. The light streaming in was soft but persistent. “Good morning, ma’am,” a familiar voice said gently. Then a warm hand settled against my forehead pressing gently across my skin, as though checking for a fever. The gesture was so careful it made something ache inside me. My lashes fluttered as I fought the pull of sleep. My eyes opening slowly, adjusting to the soft glow of daylight. crouched beside me was lucy. The sight of her made something inside me loosen. Her round face, slightly tired but full of concern, was framed by her brunette hair, now styled differently.

My legs moved before my thoughts could catch up. I sprinted down the hallway, heart pounding louder than my footsteps, past rooms filled with quiet groans and nurses who turned too slowly. The further I went, the heavier my chest became. She wasn’t in her room. She wasn’t in her room. She wasn’t—Oh God.“Where is she?!” I yelled, but no one had an answer. Not the nurse with trembling fingers, not the receptionist who suddenly couldn’t meet my gaze.A growing noise rang in my ears as an unbearable pressure built in my chest.I don’t even know how I got there. Maybe I flew. Maybe I fell. Maybe I ran with so much desperation that my limbs forgot their limits. But I found myself pushing past the familiar white door that led to the hospital’s back garden. It smelled like damp soil. And there, through the trimmed hedges, beyond the faded wheelchair ramp—Was a form.A pale form lying still in the grass. My breath caught in my throat.No.No, no, no please. My feet made a muffled sound agai

“Did you kill her because she chose Mr. Drew over you?” The question came with a loud snap of a camera, followed by a chaotic chorus of shutters and shouting. The reporters descended on us like vultures. “We just need one statement, sir!” A ginger-haired female reporter shoved a tiny mic into the partially open car window, her eyes wild with the thrill of a potential headline. When Candice had sent that message, I hadn’t even gotten the chance to show Alex. We were already pulling into the estate’s driveway—and then the swarm hit. Flashbulbs, voices and Chaos. These people should really give it a rest. “You okay back there?” Alex glanced at me from the front seat, his voice way too calm. “Yes, I guess,” I said. No, I wasn’t. The lights were blinding, relentless. Reporters kept closing in, waving mics like weapons. The guards were barely managing to hold them off. “Is it true you killed her to punish Drew for taking your inheritance?” “Were you in a passionate rela

His hand was still on my waist, warm and grounding, as his breath brushed the side of my neck.“What was she like?” I asked in a whisper, my eyes fixed on the ornate patterns carved into the door in front of us. My heart pounded softly. He didn’t hesitate. “She was… a handful,” he murmured, voice low. “But Father loved her.”A strange tightness twisted in my chest. The thought of him being madly in love with her and still sleeping with Celeste made my stomach churn. But then again… Beatrice had been sleeping with Drew.“We met in Bangkok,” he said, his voice barely above the hum of memory. “When I took over Blackwood Holdings. But even then, I was already doing business with the Martin Muir. So when I found out Martin had another daughter i was… shocked. I’d only ever known Celeste, and I realized she wasn’t a fan of bragging about being a twin.”He paused. The silence between us stretched thin.“It turns out Joseph never really put her in the spotlight,” Alexander said quietly, his b

“You should stop me,” Alex murmured, his teeth tugging at my nipple, making a strangled hiss escape my dazed mouth. Yes, I should, I thought to myself, but how could I? How could I stop him when there was this strange heat pulling me toward him…. toward the sinful place where his suit-clad thighs now rubbed gently against my body? I was an idiot. A total fucking idiot. My hands instinctively tangled in his thick hair, still damp from the shower he definitely took on his way here, the strands not fully dried. I could feel the wetness against my fingers, and it only made everything more intense. He suddenly moved his mouth away from my nipple with a soft pop, raising his face to mine. His silver eyes were now a deep blue, glazed over as he took me in. His gaze burned into me. What did he see? Did I look dazed with desire like him? I wouldn’t know. The next moment, his warm breath seized my jaw, and his lips crashed down onto mine, kissing me with a heat that made me shiver. The
