Tears streamed down my face as I whimpered, yet he remained still, observing me.

I stumbled closer to the creature, trying to hold back my sobs. Fear gripped me tightly.

"It's alright, puppy. I promise I won't hurt you."

He was enormous, larger than any dog my mother had ever allowed me to encounter, and his fur was as dark as the night sky.

He stood his ground.

He wasn’t trembling with fear like I was.

His gaze was fixed on me, and his silver eyes sparkled with an otherworldly beauty.

"I'm scared, puppy." I sank to the ground in front of him, my sobs escaping in waves.

The dog remained there, patiently watching.

I reached out, yearning to feel his soft fur. He was truly magnificent.

Finally, the puppy approached me, and the moment I wrapped my arms around his neck, a sense of safety enveloped me.

Suddenly, I jolted awake, gasping for breath. The room was dark, but a faint beam of light allowed my eyes to adjust. It had been a dream. The puppy had transformed into a wolf,

S U M M E RJulian drove me back to my car in silence, not asking a single question. There were no discussions about the future or any plans laid out. Yet, he tenderly cupped my face and pressed a kiss to my forehead.I could almost believe he had the ability to read my thoughts. His gentle butterfly kiss felt like a reprimand, a prelude to the consequences I would face for deceiving him.As I extracted tissue samples, I was acutely aware of the agent's watchful gaze, which only heightened the unsettling nature of my task. I mentally cataloged the chemicals that could amplify the DNA, but acquiring them would be a challenge, especially without addressing a multitude of questions I couldn't answer. The odor this time was more intense than before. It wasn't just the smell of death and the metallic tang of blood; it also carried the scent of earth—dirt, sweat, and moss. It reminded me of the forest. Perhaps that was where he had been partially devoured.I noticed that their faces remaine

S U M M E RThe agent was already seated in the restaurant when I arrived in the parking lot. There was something unsettling about stepping into an empty diner at such a late hour. A Waffle House near campus had been a familiar spot for me and my friends during the rare occasions when Daniel was in a good mood and could babysit. Those nights often ended with us sipping coffee and devouring waffles. This situation was different. There would typically be at least six of us, with four being guys. There’s safety in numbers, especially with a potential serial killer on the loose, and here I was, meeting her in a sketchy part of town. She was tucked away in the back. Did she really think no one would notice us? I didn’t even spot anyone behind the counter. A chill ran down my arms, intensifying the eerie sensation that we were being observed. I had checked to make sure I wasn’t being followed, but the feeling lingered. But surely, the creatures of the night were lurking in the woods, right?

J U L I A NMost people would struggle to recognize the distinct scent of a wolf, and they would be completely unaware if one was tracking them. They felt safe until they ventured too close to a wolf's den or near its young pups.Typically, wolves have little interest in humans, especially as a food source. While they prefer not to feel threatened, they lead fulfilling lives, relying on their sharp senses for protection.Wolfen share similar traits. Our senses are exceptionally acute, allowing us to detect our kind from several hundred yards away. We possess night vision, exhibit extraordinary strength often seen only in films, and can outrun the average human male. However, tonight was not about observing a family of Wolfen enjoying their cozy homes with large-screen TVs, perhaps tucking their children in for a busy school day. This night was dedicated to a hunting mission aimed at uncovering any signs that might confirm my mother and the council's growing anxiety. In my younger days

J U L I A NThe notion that their behavior changed due to the full moon was ridiculous, yet the bright illumination offered some comfort from the countless shadows. As anticipated, my vision was significantly sharper than it had been just a few days prior. The thrill of the hunt surged through me, my adrenaline pumping and my heart racing."I missed this," River remarked as we reached a clearing."Same here," I replied, taking a deep breath and glancing around. "We're getting close.""I can smell them. Four, maybe more," he said, his senses on high alert."We need to tread carefully.""Hey, man. Careful is my middle name."Even in this precarious situation, he managed to crack a joke. I appreciated that about him. "Right. I'll remind you of that when you pull something reckless.""Like what? By the way, I think we should lure them out into the open." Without waiting for my input, he let out a wolf howl that echoed through the forest, instantly silencing all the nocturnal creatures. On

Melissa's cheerful voice made me want to hurl my pillow across the room. The truth was, I was still rattled from the sight of imaginary werewolves leaping out from behind every building and tree on my way home. It was all in my head, but it scared me senseless. My mind had been racing, fueled by exhaustion, confusion, and yes, a healthy dose of fear."I let you sleep in, but I have to get to my first appointment soon. I can't believe you actually made it home," she said."Yeah, me neither.""Uh-oh. Did Mr. Prince Charming turns out to be a toad?" Melissa teased with a wink.Pounding my fists against the pillows only made her laugh harder. "No, I had a work commitment.""You deal with the deceased. J U L I A NThe morgue.Throughout my life, I had visited several facilities, compelled to identify the remains of friends and a cousin from years past. Yet, it had been quite some time since my last visit. I had hoped to find Summer, but my search had been in vain. Before coming here, I had driven past Summer's house, hoping to catch a glimpse of her car. I wanted to ensure she was alright and uncover any secrets she might be keeping. From this distance, I couldn't read her thoughts or figure out her whereabouts or reasons for leaving. Still, I had my suspicions. Her car was absent from the facility, but Daphne's was parked outside. Perhaps my niece would be willing to share some insight into the situation. As I entered, I was immediately struck by the sterile scent of fresh antiseptic, almost overwhelming in its intensity. The morgue was different from what I had anticipated; the well-lit areas benefited from natural light streaming in from somewhere. It was eerily quiet, a silence

J U L I A NParker was the only person I permitted to enter my office unannounced. Or without knocking.I wouldn’t even let my brothers interrupt me like that.Still, I had been expecting him since he had called me twice and sent two texts."Is this about something within the company or something else?" I had been standing by my window for the past thirty minutes, trying to figure out how to approach Summer about what was happening. I hadn’t pressed Daphne either, but I might have to if I couldn’t find the woman who had captured my interest far too much.As a medical examiner, there were countless reasons that could explain her delay; perhaps she was tied up with the autopsy of a recent murder victim. If that were the case, she must have been absolutely terrified. It made sense why she had mentioned the wolf the night before.I had a sinking feeling that whatever she had gotten involved in could put her in danger."Don't mess with me, buddy. My pussy was still aching from the rough round of sex, but I wanted more.I craved everything the man could and would give me.“That’s tough around you, little wolf,” Julian said in a low and husky voice, easily finding the bedroom in my tiny house. Once inside, he struggled to close the door without slamming it.He’d ruined my panties and I had a feeling that was a habit I’d need to break him of. As soon as he tossed me onto the bed, he yanked down my skirt, pitching it aside within seconds. His needs were insatiable, more so than before. Do they always glow in the moonlight?”“I honestly don’t know.”“I think they’re perhaps the most beautiful pair of eyes I’ve ever seen.”“Do you want to talk about my eyes?” I was still burning for her, even more so now.“Not really,” she mused.“Good, because I need to devour you.”Her lips parted as if in a blatant invitation, which I took. But I do have a dishwasher.”Only after finishing washing the last plate and placing it in the dishrack did I turn around to face her. The shorter skirt accentuated her long, tan legs, the flimsy tee shirt unable to hide her fully aroused nipples.I yanked the dish towel into my fingers, wiping my hands as I allowed my gaze to fall. “I thought I’d keep myself busy while you were getting Britney to bed.”Summer walked further into the room, taking a deep breath as she did so. “You are quite the hit with my daughter.”“I am, huh?” I returned the towel to the spot where she’d hung it over the stainless rung on the microwave and leaned against the

S U M M E RThe day was insufferable. My mind was frazzled. My heart ached. What could be a worse combination?I was on my way to my daughter’s birthday party, my little girl being chauffeured by my best friend instead of her own mother. I was a horrible mom, but I’d wanted to head to the lab to start a few tests, a few I had to send off to a friend of mine back in Chicago who would keep quiet. Or so I prayed.I’d found some surprises for my baby girl downtown, happy with my purchases. I’d been headed to the party when I turned down the wrong street.Passing the tarot card reading shop. While I’d done my best to ignore the draw, I couldn’t seem to help myself. It was as if my willpower was gone now that I knew… That I assumed…“No. You won’t go there. Not yet. S U M M E RWolves were definitely real and super dangerous. This one looked like it could end my life and have me for dinner. Something inside me said I needed to face this beast before my time was up. I dropped to my knees, trying to steady my breathing while I searched for something to use as a weapon. Luck was on my side for a moment, and I found a sturdy piece of wood. But I was running out of time. In a last-ditch effort to escape, I took off in a different direction, sprinting as fast as I could. I didn’t even notice I was heading back toward the driveway until the bright lights came into view. I felt a wave of relief, but it quickly faded when I turned around. I had seen that video too many times—the guy coming back to life. The blurry footage had shown me enough horror and fascination as I watched him grow larger, his spine twisting. But those white lights wrapped around the trees gave me a chilling realization.I could no longer hide behind science. The high-pitched howl

S U M M E R“What are you doing?”The wind wailed like a mournful wolf, whisking my words away into the night. I pressed on the sharp edges of pebbles and stones biting into my worn tennis shoes. Despite my cautious escape, I quickly felt lost. My heart raced, adrenaline coursing through me, keeping my mind sharp for the moment. But I wondered how long that clarity would last amidst my swirling emotions. Suddenly, I stumbled forward, losing my footing on a smooth stone. The sounds of rushing water surrounded me, leaving me uncertain of the river's depth. Damn it, I had lost my way in the darkness. Clearly, my eyesight was no match for a wolf's. Shit. I felt the urge to shout out one of my favorite movie lines at the top of my lungs.“Why can’t I have a normal boyfriend?”Instead of a savage wolf.It was ridiculous to think that way, but my mind was incapable of processing it any other way. I’d just seen the most bizarre yet insanely gorgeous eyes that were entirely those of a wolf.
