Mia’s POV:
I hurried inside the house and locked all the doors. Luckily, Jaret was on the night shift. He waited for me to come home before leaving Oliver.
My mind skipped Davon. After clearing the table and tucking Oliver in bed, I went to my room and got ready to sleep when Davon suddenly appeared like dust being dragged near the notebook again.
“Davon!”
“I can feel the notebook is slowly sucking me in, Mia,” his face gloomed.
“So you’re free in the morning and trapped in the evening? Is that how your curse works?”
“I have no idea, but this is better than staying in the dark for fifty years,” Davon watched the sun goes down as his body slowly pulverized and sucked inside the notebook.
I flipped to the last page and asked Davon if he had found his pack. He didn’t. But he found his land and the tombstone his pack built to commemorate him and Laura. I feel sorry for him. This isn’t the world he used to live in, but I hope I can help him find his pack.
I slept with Davon and Nixon, clouding my brain. My day was full of surprises and engrossing occurrences. I hope I know how to handle it furthermore.
The following day, I woke up with Jaret’s raucous rants. I wonder how mom endures it all. If the reason is love, damn, I don’t want to be in love! I mean, mom has a choice. Even proof to send Jaret to jail, but she just let him be. If she’s afraid of his threat, well, he can’t touch us if he’s behind bars. Sometimes I think being a parent makes us dumb.
“You slut! I should have let you starve to death with your impertinent daughter!” he yelled and cussed at my mom.
I saw Jaret heading to his car and found mom crying in the stock room. Did she really think she could hide her tears from me?
“Mom?”
“Mia, are you going to go to work now?” she went to the kitchen and packed some food for me, “Here, have some breakfast on the way.”
“Will you be okay?”
“Yeah, I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me,” mom touch my cheek.
I hugged her before I went. She needed it, I know. I hurried out, holding back my tears. One day, we will leave this house and go somewhere safe, away from Jaret’s shadow.
“Are you okay?” Davon showed up out of nowhere. I almost forgot. Morning is Davon’s freedom time.
“I’m fine. Get used to it if you want to hang out for a while,” I looked away to hide my tears. Davon went back to the house where he found his tombstone. Waiting for his luck to see his pack.
Since I am not motivated to go to work, so I go with him to meet Laura’s grave and his. Maybe that will talk some sense to him that his pack has probably moved on and forgotten about him. That it’s time for him to move on as well.
“Wow, isn’t it creepy seeing your own grave?”
“Not at all. But the pain of the past is terrifying. Can’t escape it.”
Seems like his pack visit once in a while. The grass is trimmed, and the flowers are adequately cared for. That’s a fresh start.
*******
The days passed without Cheska. We missed her so much, but I know she enjoys her time with her parents. They barely come home, so Cheska makes the most of their time together whenever they are around.
“Mia, my aunt is cooking later. She’s inviting you to come over,” Theo went to school early. He knows Cheska will still be absent and doesn’t want me to be alone.
“Really? Oh, I love your aunt. Sure!”
“Great. Did you find a job?”
“Nope. Still searching.”
“I’m waiting for my friend to call. Hopefully, it’s good news.”
“I will pray for that.”
Since Cheska was not around, Nixon sat on her chair unexpectedly. He seems persistent in becoming our friend.
“You guys want to hang out later?”
“Where?” I glanced at Theo, who looked as surprised as I was. I hate Nixon Bronx. But now, it slowly changed. Did he realize all he did, and this is his way to make amends with us, especially to me?
“My place. My parents are not around, and also, I need help, Theo. You’re the only student who got an A in Physics and Geometry. Could you help me with that? Will you?”
“Of course! No problem, man.”
I’m sure Theo saw me glaring at him to turn down Nixon’s invitation. But because it was so cool for him to hang out with the most popular guy in school and probably become his friend, he pretended not to see me.
“I hate you. Cheska won’t like this. Did you think about that?”
“She doesn’t need to know,” Theo said firmly.
“Seriously?”
“Damn serious, Mia. Do you want her to hate us?”
I didn’t answer because Theo got some points, but as much as possible, I didn’t want to lie to my best friend.
“I guess so.”
Nixon was waiting for us outside in his car. I don’t want the games he is trying to play, but Theo is on. I kept thinking about her aunt’s cooking. It would have been better than hanging out with Nixon teaching Physics and Geometry.
Nixon prepared food for us. It looks like he already anticipated us accepting his invitation. He lived near Cheska’s mansion. Unlike her, Nixon got his relatives to live around their house. It’s like a small community, but they have the biggest house, and shockingly, he got a lot of maids. He looks up to him like their king and does whatever he asks. Although that is what maids do, their gesture is so weird. Like he is some ranking official or something.
Theo did well in teaching Nixon, or I doubt he didn’t know the subjects. He seemed like an intelligent guy. After the teaching session, Nixon offered some movies to extend our stay. He said he would sleep alone in the house since the maids also have their own homes. But I don’t have plans for a sleepover. Not in the man we barely knew.
But Theo was excited and insisted that we stay a little longer and watch the movie he picked, which I knew he watched countlessly. He was busy taking pictures of him and Nixon hanging out. He would brag about it on his social media account for sure.
Halfway through watching the movie, my phone rang, and it was my mom.
“Mom?”
“Mia…,” mom’s voice cracked.
“What happened? Hello?”
She hang up. I knew something was wrong.
“I need to go home,” I quickly grab my things.
“What’s wrong?” Nixon asked.
“It’s mom.”
“Okay, I’ll drive you home.”
Since the movie was canceled, Theo decided to go home as well. When I arrived home, I saw my mom in the kitchen sobbing. She got some bruises on her arms, and her lips were bleeding.
“I’m going to kill him!” I blurted out, taking a knife.
I thought Jaret was gone. Usually, he goes out for a drink after their fight, but this time he stays. He heard me, came out from the back door, and grabbed my neck, pinning me to the wall.
“How dare you disrespect me in my own house, you ungrateful bitch! And what is this?” he twists my wrist and retrieves the knife.
“You’re going to kill me, huh?” he laughs and slaps my face. I felt my cheek burn.
“Jaret, no!” Mom tried to pull him, but he was strong and bulky. I didn’t move a muscle and stared into his eyes without fear. I have had enough of his mistreatment. I will not let him kill me without giving him a good fight.
“Please, Jaret. Let her go, please,” mom pleaded, crying.
“Coward!” I fired back as soon as he released me, “You only raise your hand to a woman. How pity!”
“What did you say?”
“She didn’t say anything. Jaret, please,” mom blocks his way, but he shoves her to the side. Jaret seizes my arm. I struggled to break free, so I kicked his balls. He crouches in pain. I was about to run away when he caught my hair. Pulling me backward and tossing me on the floor.
“I own you and your mom! Say that again, and I swear I will let you watch while I cut your mom’s throat!” he spits.
“Dad? What are you doing to Mia?” Oliver heard the commotion and came down. Mom quickly covered her face with her hair and folded her arms.
“Nothing, buddy. We were just…I was teaching her some self-defense. Why don’t you go back to your room and sleep? You still have school tomorrow.”
Oliver stared at mom and me confusingly.
“Okay,” Oliver kissed mom goodnight and came to me, “Goodnight, Mia. I love you,”
“I love you too, baby,” I suck my tears. Jaret went upstairs with Oliver to put him in bed. I immediately grab my bag and run outside.
“Mia!”
I heard my mom call, but I didn’t stop or look back. All I wanted was to get away from that place. To my surprise, Nixon was still outside.
“Get in!” he said and drove off.
Mia’s POV:There was a long silence between us until we reached his house. I couldn’t help but let out my frustrations and wail. We were on the patio drinking wine while I screamed and cursed my life in the air. Moments later, Theo came and hugged me. Nixon told his family driver to pick him up to join us to cheer me up.“I hate my life.”“Cry it all out. Everything will be fine. One day, you will have the courage to fight Jaret and end your misery,” Theo refilled my glass with wine.“I think it’s about time, Mia,” Nixon took a picture of my neck. Jaret’s hand left a mark around it and on my arm.“Nixon, I can’t. Not with my mom and brother still in that house. He’ll hurt them.”“Then when? When? If he kills you and your mom?” Nixon threw her phone on the table, pissed. He was gritting his teeth angrily.“Trust me, not now. I will when I know it’s safe.”“I sure hope it’s not too late by that time!” Nixon exclaimed, retaliating on the table.I was so baffled by how Nixon cared so much
MIA’S POV Nixon called me mate. Additionally, Davon mentioned that word. It was a thing about werewolves like partners or lovers, and I am confused why Nixon calls me that.“You called me mate. What do you mean by that?” I pretended to be curious upon hearing the word. I wanted to know if he knew what it meant and why he said that."Well, a mate is someone that you adore.”“Adore? Are you telling me that….” “Yes, Mia. I adore you,” Nixon interrupted.I don’t know what to answer, but I don’t believe him. Adore? Me? He bullied me all the time, and suddenly he’s being nice and calling me his mate. Did he ever forget that he dropped me off a few meters away from school because he was so afraid to be seen by his friends?“Are you kidding me? Do you think that word is a joke?” I shook my head and walked away.“Mia! Hey,” Nixon blocked my way, “I am not making fun of you. I mean it. I adore you.”Why should I believe a guy who doesn't want his friends to see him hanging out with me? I glare
MIA'S POV I woke up from Jaret's voice bossing my mom and remembered he would stay home in the morning. Mom is going to work now. "Shit!" I jerked off my bed. "Good morning," Davon greeted. He looked so fresh already. I could smell my shower gel all over him. "Davon! You need to go now. I'll meet you outside when I'm done preparing myself," I pushed him near the window. "Why?" his body stiffened, refusing to move. "Because Jaret is back. If he sees you, we're dead. Wait for me in the woods. I'll bring some breakfast. Go!" Davon slowly crawled out the window, staying low. He went to the bushes and continued into the woods. I felt relieved immediately. I went to the door and unlock it when mom suddenly came in. "Mom!" "Jesus, Mia! Don't startle me like that!" Mom was taken aback, seeing me standing by the door, "And why are you still in your pajama?" "Sorry, mom. I woke up late." "Packed your food before I go to work. Jaret is here," mom urged. I followed her dow
MIA'S POV "Work? What do you mean?" "I have decided. I will find a job so I can help you, and I will start tomorrow." I see the determination in Davon's eyes. "Hey, let's have a deal. Study first. Please read all the books in the library about humans and everything in our world. Only then will I help you find a job? How's that?" Davon thought of it. "Deal," he propose a handshake to seal our deal. That was how they do it in his pack. ******* It's been our daily routine. Davon got up early, bathed, and left before Jaret came home. I made sure I woke up early and packed food for him while he was outside waiting. I felt like a married person. Like what my mom did. Taking care of us. Mom was intrigued why I suddenly became an early bird. I make Jaret an excuse. She knows I don't want to be around him. Every day, Davon checked his grave and went to the library. I gave him all the books he needed to study. He was eager to learn, and because the library was free, he could spend his
MIA’s POV "I~I forgot to call. That's why I came. Sorry," I glared at Davon. "Don't worry. Your friend said he would cover your shift today while you rest. You've been up all night. How's your mom?" "She's fine now. Ah, Mrs. Olsen, could we have breakfast first? My friend is hungry, and I forgot to eat mine hurrying." "Oh, I don't mind. You go ahead. I'll watch the library." "Thank you, Mrs. Olsen." I treat Davon at the fast food. He got the extra-large burger and fries and deserves it today. What he did for me was overwhelming, and I am speechless. It was amazing. "How did you come up with that idea?" "I just thought of it. I got your back, Mia. Now that I am here, I won't let anything bad happen to you." His words mean a lot to me. He melts my heart. It was nice to have someone to watch over you. "Mia? I thought you were on duty. Who's the guy?" “Theo! This is…my….” “Hi, I’m Davon. I’m Mia’s friend,” Davon interrupted, shaking hands with Theo. “Friend? How come
MIA'S POV"His eyes, his eyes!" Theo's voice quivered, panic-stricken him. I pulled him up, but he stepped back, moving away from Davon. He was shaking in fear."I fell on my bike, Davon. I was being careless.""Be careful next time," Davon caresses my cheek, "I know some herbs to put on it.""What the fuck?! Mia, what is he? And you?" Theo stuttered. I blinked my eyes, warning him not to talk. Davon could hear him.We didn't notice Davon started into the woods. He looked back at me and urged me to follow him."Yes, I'm coming," I answered and told Theo to go home, "I'll see you at school tomorrow. I promise I'll explain everything.""You should. Will you be okay alone with him? Because I can come if….""I'll be fine, Theo, and please don't tell anyone what you saw," I ran away and chased after Davon. Theo didn't leave and waited for me to catch up with Davon. He watched us go. He has a lot of questions right now, but I need time to think. If I tell him, Cheska will get mad at him too
MIA'S POV"Then what is he, Mia?" Theo demanded an answer. I know he needs clarification, but I cannot risk divulging the information in school. It can wait. Our classmates arrived, and so as Professor Callahan. I settled in my chair."Later," Theo said, going back to his chair.I am left with no choice but to confess to Theo. If he chooses to tell Cheska, I will accept the consequences of my action. After all, I stole the notebook and hid it from her.Professor Callahan talks about our town legends. Where werewolves used to live in our land along with humans. Humans and werewolves co-exist. But as the years go by, werewolves depart our town for no reason, and since then, no one knows where they are now or do they still live up to this day.Weird. Professor Callahan was so fascinated by legends, especially werewolves. Has he seen one before? And why did werewolves leave our town? In Davon's case, he was left behind. Fifty years in the notebook, who would have dared to wait for him?"Hu
MIA'S POV Mom heard a loud crash and hurried out. Their room was across the corridor, and my brother Oliver was in the center. Oliver didn't hear him. He's probably playing video games and on the headphone. But who wouldn't hear Theo? He's almost six feet tall and medium built. His weight is enough to shake our entire house made of wood. Mom saw him lying unconscious on the floor. "Oh, my God! What happened to him?" "I don't know, Mom. He just fell." I stood next to Theo, shaking him using my feet. Pulling him alone is impossible. He's so heavy. "Help me pull him." Thank God, Mom proposes. We pulled Theo inside my room. Mom laid an extra bed on the floor, and we placed Theo there. She told me to get Vicks Vaporub and smothered him. His skin was cold and pale. "Watch him and call me when he wakes up. Is he sick? Why did he faint? He looked fine earlier." "I have no idea, Mom. Maybe Theo wasn't feeling well already. Who knows," shrugging, I move to the bedside and close the not
DAVON’S POVMia is the only person who could tell me about Vera. If she’s back, I have to be really careful and hide. Not only she could do harm to me but also to Mia. Theo told me that she would be discharge in the afternoon. I went back to the hospital dress as a utility personnel. I stole the uniform in the locker room of the stuff when I used the back door. Covering my face with a mask, I took a map and a pail, and clean the hallway on the floor where Mia was confined. I waited for a few minutes for Jeffrey or Elon, but I didn’t see their shadows. Moments later, I used the cap I found inside the utility uniform’s pocket and wears it. I went to Mia’s room and check the toilet. When it was clear that she was alone, I immediately approached her. “Mia, is it true that Vera is back?” “Davon? Oh, my God!” Mia glanced at the door, “If my Dad sees you you’re dead.”“I know that’s why I made sure they aren’t here. Is it true that Vera is back?” I checked the door every second. “Who t
DAVON’S POVTheo narrated after I left. Mia’s struggle to forget me, our past, and our love. I now know why she hated me, and that made me wonder if I deserve her. “That’s sad, but let’s here Davon’s reasons. We cannot jump into conclusion without hearing his side,” Aunt Criselda said, waiting for me to talk. I explained everything to Theo. He was silent the whole time, contemplating on my story. If he deny me, I don’t know who else to approach to help me with Mia. “Bro, if you lost your phone, you should have visit her. I know it’s a long drive and very tiring, but at least that way Mia will know the problem.”“I know it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have assumed that she would wait for me and understand my situation without telling her. I was just caught up with the responsibility given to me, and I thought I needed to improve myself so I could catch up with this world.”“Catch up? Why, are you a caveman?” Aunt Criselda urged to eat the muffin, “There you have it Theo. Can you he
DAVON’S POV“Elon Lucas. What a pleasant surprise?!” I was playing it cool, but deep inside I was terrified. Elon Lucas is mot a fan of my kind and yet here he is, in my house. Elon smiled. “Indeed. Actually, your presence in the hospital shocked me. I’m sure you already know why I am here.”“Hmm, coffee? Wine?” Elon chose wine. Preferably cognac. Fortunately, Victor set up a mini bar and filled it with all kinds of wine. It paid well. I told Alfred to serve the wine and joined them in the living room. I was rehearsing my answer in my thoughts just in case Mia already denied me.“Tell me about it,” Elon demanded, thanking Alfred for the wine. “It was a big mistake. Mia and I are not together just to make it clear. Well before, but its all over now.”I was studying Elon Lucas’s face. A wrinkle formed his brows which means he is not satisfied with my answer. That is up to him. I stated the truth. Nothing more, nothing less.“That is great. Not anymore that only prove to me that you
MIA’S POV“He is not!” I sit up, objecting. “Then what is he talking about?” “Look, Mr. Lucas, it’s a long story but if you let me. I will explain….”“Davon, that’s enough! Will you please just go! You are not invited here,” I shamed him. With Dad around, I don’t think it’s a good idea to dwell in the past. Davon left in silence. For everyone’s peace of mind, Nixon left too. Dad doesn’t want any werewolves in my room, and I know he will not back off. “I brought you some flowers,” Jeffrey place it on the table, setting aside Nixon and Davon’s flowers, “How do you feel?”Jeffrey touch my forehead. I slapped his hand and move away. “Baby girl, he is only concern for you,” Dad defended him, and because of that, I lost my interest to talk to him. Obviously, I don’t like Jeffrey, but he’s pushing it. “Okay, what happen? How did you end up here?” Dad asked. I turned my back on them, so Mom explained everything. I am not going to pretend anymore. Jeffrey is not welcome in the family and
MIA’S POVWhat is happening to me? I felt so weak. Vera was in front of me shouting. Then she gave me water, forcing me to drink. I took a sip and close my eyes. After a few seconds I felt my stomach grumbled and puke. God, that felt better! Vera check my eyes and poured something in my mouth. “This will make her feel better. She’s dehydrated. Did you have a drink last night?” “Yes, Aunt Vera, just a few drinks.”“That’s why,” Vera told the housekeeper to cook some soup and demanded to do it quickly. She came back and check my pulse then check my eyes. I feel better, but my head still span when I move. “She’s regaining color. Give her the soup and let her rest. She needs more sleep and water. I suggest your friend shouldn’t drink alcohol when she’s anemic. It’s too dangerous.”Cheska stood beside the couch with her hands on her waist. She shook her and took her phone. “Is she stress lately? Because if she is then your friend must be suffering from poor sleep which causes her hem
MIA’S POV“Jeffrey? What the heck are you doing here?” “This is a public place. I can be wherever I want. Now, if you please,” Jeffrey drink his wine and put the glass in the table, “Before this guy shifted and rampage this place, we better go. You don’t want to be here if the Legion comes.”“What are you talking about?” “Questions later,” Jeffrey held my hand and pulled me. I immediately pulled back and meddled with Nixon and Davon. Jeffrey didn’t leave and watched us with mockery in his eyes, while Nixon and Davon were sizing each other. My friends came to help me, but none of them broke their stares. “If you do not stop, Dad would be here with his entire Legion and I would be force to marry Jeffrey!” I yelled. “What? Tell me you’re joking,” Davon turned to me confusingly. “I am not. So you two stop this nonsense or I will never talk to any of you ever again!” I walked away. Theo and Cheska followed me. I urged them to go home and leave the place before Jeffrey report everythi
MIA’S POV When we got home, Mom quickly went to the kitchen and opened some wine, drinking it straight from the bottle.“Mom, are you okay?” “I’m fine, just go to your room.” I nodded and turned away, heading to my room when I heard Mom called me again.“Mia, forget what your Dad said. He’s delirious, and I don’t want you going to that place ever again.” I couldn’t agree less with Mom, but Dad’s announcement didn’t bother me for a moment. I was more concerned of their confrontation. Dad was downhearted hearing those words from my Mom. As if she regret their relationship. She regret falling for him. “There’s only one person to blame,” I fisted. The next morning, I searched for Jeffrey Henderson at the Japanese restaurant. I know most of the members of the Legion hang out there, and I was right.“Jeffrey! I need to talk to you now!” “Do we have something to talk about? I am enjoying my tea can’t you see?” he answered rudely. How could Dad set me up with the guy like him? “Yes we
MIA’S POV“What are you talking, Dad?” I uttered softly.“You heard me right. Jeffrey is one of the members of Legion. He can protect you. Besides, he already confess his interest on you yesterday and he was very sincere.”Everyone congratulate us. I let my Dad’s words sink in to my perturbed mind. He already planned my marriage without asking me. Dad called Jeffrey and invited him to join us in the center stage. He was smiling widely waving to the crowd. He was about to hold my waist but I eluded him. “Don’t touch me,” I said and walked out. “Mia!” Dad called out, but I left swiftly, leaving my bike in Jeffrey’s car. I kept running without direction. All I wanted was to getaway. I thought meeting my father again was a good thing. Why would he want to betrothed me to a man I don’t love? Is it enough that he and Mom didn’t end well being in the same secret society. I stopped running and realized that I reached the bay walk. It was packed with tourist enjoying the beach. Sitting u
MIA’S POV I was breathless seeing Davon entered the classroom. Our eyes met, but I immediately retracted. He introduced himself to the class and moved to a seat at the back. Davon dress expensively like his brother Victor. Confident and proud. Different from the Davon I once knew. City life changes him big time. What do I expect? He left and didn't bother to look back and forgotten us. That is how money could do to you. His eyes didn’t left my sight, but I pretended not affected by his presence. Davon is nothing to me now. He no longer exist in my life. “Welcome to our school, Mr. Maddox. I hope you enjoy your senior year here. If you have any questions or you need some guidance, my office is open to all students,” Professor Callahan said with full of enthusiasm. He was always been proud of our town, but knowing Davon as one of the oldest family living in this town, he found his new prospect to trade stories about this place’s history. “Thank you, Professor. I appreciate that.”
