Vincent

Anne’s presence increasingly brightened my mood from the moment she walked in through the door until now.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been feeling so frustrated and handicapped. My patient diagnosed with cancer has been getting worse and my efforts to help him came out futile.

I can’t ascertain the reason for my mood change. Maybe, it’s the aura she exudes or how clumsy she gets. Whatever it was, it left me wondering.

After the food we had, I had gone up to tidy Andrew’s room because I knew the storm wasn’t abetting anytime soon. I also knew she would be more comfortable staying in Andrew’s room where she’s more familiar with, rather than the guest room.

I straightened Andrew’s bed and took my time to remove all his clothes lying around, then walked down the stairs to summon Anne.

On reaching the living room, I noticed Anne was no longer sitting on the couch.

I looked around but there was no sign of her.

I didn’t hear her come upstairs and the storm was still raging, so she couldn’t have left.

Movements on the couch caught my attention, but the headrest shielded my view, so I had to move closer. The sight I met on reaching the couch rooted me to the ground.

My heart tightened and my protective instincts ignited.

There on the couch, Anne was resting her head on the armrest, sound asleep, with the lower part of her legs on the table.

She had her arm folded underneath her head for support. She just laid there, looking so fragile and vulnerable.

She had on a plain yellow t-shirt and loose jeans but that did little to conceal her slender waist and curves which I’d been forcing myself not to look at since she came. But now, her top had ridden up, exposing her smooth, caramel flat stomach. Her jeans were low enough to make visible the upper part of her rounded hips.

I just stood there and stared, trying to figure out what was wrong with me.

I felt like shielding her as a brother would, but at the same time, I thought of what it'll feel like to run my hands along her smooth skin, exploring those soft curves.

I shook my head at my ridiculousness and proceeded to slowly pull down her clothe to cover the exposed part, then I gently raised her legs from the table and straightened them on the couch.

I went back to Andrew’s room upstairs to retrieve a blanket. All my intentions were to make her feel comfortable with things she was familiar with.

Moving quietly so as not to wake her, I pulled the blanket gently over her body.

The next thing that happened almost drove me crazy.

As I made to tuck the blanket underneath her, she suddenly shot out her right hand and grabbed my hand. I had thought she was scared and was awake but to my surprise, she was still sleeping. She wriggled her body to face the back of the couch, taking my arm with her.

She cuddled my entire arm. With my palm as her new head support, she rubbed her face against it, making satisfying moaning sounds.

My other hand, on reflex, balled into a fist and pounded on the couch behind her, wedging me from falling on top of her. She left me stooped in an uncomfortable butt-in-the-air position, still struggling not to trip and fall face flat on her.

“I’ve missed you, mum,” she whispered to my hand.

I couldn’t stop the smile that crept to my face despite my inclined position.

I was so close to her face that if she just decided to turn her face towards me, our nose would touch.

She wasn’t making things easy for me. A part of my arm was secured comfortably in-between her two breasts. I could feel her softness pressing against my arm, then her lavender scent decided it was the best time to infiltrate my nose.

All these made my groin tighten painfully, giving out a dull throb.

I shook my head again to expunge the illicit scenes invading my thoughts, then slowly, I removed my hand from the almost strong grip Anne had on it.

Why I didn’t think of waking her up was far from me. Well, on second thought, if she had awoken to see me hovering over her, it would have been a different, unappealing scenerio, taking a resemblance of the initial encounter with my brother. I didn’t want that.

I breathed deeply like someone who just went through hard labor, and fell back on the glass center table.

I then thought of carrying her to Andrew’s room but decided against it, partly because she might wake up midway and freak out. That too I didn’t need. Another reason was the freaky desire to watch her sleep.

I chose the latter.

Anne

I opened my eyes and immediately knew I wasn’t in my room.

I rubbed and squinted my eyes to adjust to the dimly lit room.

I checked my phone on the table and it was five o’clock in the morning which meant it was still dark outside.

Sitting up, I stretched my muscles and realized I had slept well despite sleeping on a couch.

I noticed the blanket which wasn’t there last night. My mind went straight to Vincent. He must have covered me because I don’t remember doing it myself.

‘How sweet.’

I felt all good and bubbly inside.

He should be sleeping up in his room I had thought, but imagine my shock when I turned to the side of the couch and came face to face with the most angelic, peaceful face I’d ever seen in my entire 21 years on this earth.

I had almost screamed out when my foggy mind hadn’t registered the figure at first and had held my hand against my mouth to stop myself from screaming out.

He was resting his head on the headrest in an uncomfortable position.

I stared endlessly at his beautiful face, fighting the urge to pinch his smooth cheeks, or run my fingers against his brows, eyes, lips, everywhere.

‘it’s sealed, I have a crush on Vincent.’

The jingling of what I presumed to be keys, drove me out of my reverie and I shot my eyes towards the door, where the sound was coming from.

‘Andrew.’

I returned my gaze to its former and found a set of clear brown eyes staring back at me.

I jerked back and almost fell off the couch.

The eyes followed my movement, wrinkling at the side as if they were smiling. When we had the jingling again, he too looked towards the door.

I followed his gaze back to the door which opened to reveal Andrew who was bent over, removing his shoes.

“These shoes are done for,” Andrew asserted, carrying his sneakers that looked like they were run over by a trailer into the house.

It was when he entered and looked up that he noticed us.

He paused, stared from me to Vincent then back at me. For a second there, I could have sworn I saw a flash of something in his eyes. I couldn’t make out that emotion because it left as fast as it came.

He then broke into a gorgeous smile and ran towards me.

“Anny, I’ve missed you!”

He lifted me off the couch and gave me a bone-crushing hug that left me gasping for air.

“Hey you,” I chirped breezily.

“Sorry I didn’t get back to you last night, the rain was terrible,” he expressed.

“It’s cool. We don’t need you drowning now, do we?” I said with a lopsided smirk, earning myself one of his award-winning smiles.

“No, I am really sorry you had to spend the night with my boring brother,” he mocked, giving his brother a side glance.

Vincent who has been quiet stood up and smacked the back of his head.

“Shut up, freak,” he said and ambled towards the kitchen.

“Boring and bully of a brother!” Andrew retorted after the retreating back of Vincent while rubbing his sore head.

I covered my mouth, giggling at Andrew’s expression.

“And you!” he said, turning to me and picking me up easily, then threw me over his shoulders.

I squeaked, struggling to get off.

“Put me down this instant!” I yelled when my struggle came out futile.

“Nope. Weeeeeeeeee!” He sang and ran around the room. Jumping up and down.

“Andrew Benedict Sawyer, I swear if I get down, I will kill you!” I threatened, exhausted from all the jerky movements.

“You sound like my mum,” he said thoughtfully, “I’ll tell yours you swore to kill me,” he said mischievously.

“That’s if you’ll still be alive…Drew please, I’m getting dizzy,” I begged.

“Only cause you asked nicely,” he said, dropping me gently on the couch.

I shot out my hand and gave him the middle finger. On seeing it, he slumped to the floor, laughing hysterically.

Just then, Vincent walked down the stairs putting on grey track pants and white polo, with a small towel over his shoulders.

He must have gone up during the gambol with Andrew.

“Hitting the gym, these babies need maintenance,” he announced, tapping his abs.

‘Hmm cocky, that’s new.’

“Show off,” Andrew sneered from where he lay on the floor.

“Hater,”  Vincent retorted, sticking his tongue out, then turned and sauntered towards the gym room.

I grinned, staring at them bicker like old women.

“Oh,” Vincent stopped and turned, “Mum invited Anne to dad’s party," he said and continued to the gym.

“Really!” Andrew yawped. “Anny bear, you’ll be my date!”

“Umm… Andrew, I don’t know if I’m going…”

“Shush!” He said, “You can’t say no.”

“I wasn’t going to….” I said, biting my nails nervously.

He laughed, not at all convinced by my reply.

I don’t know how they held their parties but somehow I knew this one was going to be grand considering it’s theirs.

Again, I’ve never met face to face with their mum. Though she seemed nice over the phone.

But the most pressing problem was the fact that I had nothing grand-party-worthy to wear to the, you know, grand party.

‘yikes.’

“Don’t worry, you’ll love my mum,” Andrew assured, coming to sit beside me, flinging his arm over my shoulders. “She’s too sweet and definitely going to spoil your tooth.”

“Shut up,” I said smacking his arm off my shoulders.

He threw his head back and laughed.

“You’ll come, right?” He pouted.

“Yeaaaa.” I drawled.

“That’s my baby.”

Anne I tried once again to draw my brows but ended up drawing a map to the treasure island. At least that’s what I thought it looked like. “It’s no use, I’ve messed up my face,” I sighed, looking up at my two stunning, gorgeously dressed roomies. They both gasped on seeing my face. “Anny! What have you done? You just couldn’t wait, could you?” That was Jane, the make-up artist. The party was today at 7 pm and It was 5 pm already. “Yikes, Jenny! Come on, it’s already five!” I wailed. Jane laughed at my nervousness and came over to do my hair and makeup. Andrew had invited Jane and Pamela to his dad’s party and they were so psyched about it. I was happier because I would be seeing more familiar faces other than that of Andrew and Vincent. With my friends, real fun was assured. They had both returned to school for the party and we went shopping a week prior for dresses and shoes to match. There, they helped me pick out a dress. Anne ‘What just happened?’ I stared at nothing in particular. Andrew has led me off the stage after our almost kiss. His phone had vibrated and he had left in a hurry after seeing the caller ID. I wondered what would have happened if he didn’t receive the call. Would I have let him? I found my seat and collapsed on it, my mind reeling. What was going on between Andrew and me? He was going to kiss me and I would have let him. Was that what I wanted? I glanced around the room. Jane and Pamela were really enjoying themselves with their partners on the dance floor. Dr. and Mrs. Sawyer were moving around, smiling and talking with their guests. My eyes landed on Vincent who was dancing, well more like moving rigidly with the Barbie on the dance floor. The lady on his arms was all smiles, exposing her annoyingly beautiful dentition. I wondered if he would have been moving like that if I was the one in his arms. As if reading my mind, his head turned to me, and our eyes met. He sur

Gotta go help mum," he said looking down at me, those emotions almost gone from his eyes. He brought up his hands, held both sides of my face, then slowly bent over and slightly brushed his lips on my forehead. I held my breath in an attempt to stop my rapid breathing and my heart that adopted a new rhythm of missing beats. I nodded swiftly before he stepped back and walked towards the exit. I turned towards Mr. Sawyer's office and saw Andrew standing a few feet away from the office with the brightest smile I've ever seen. He walked, more like ran towards me. AnneAndrew’s flight was in the evening, so he had picked me up earlier to spend some time with him before he left. He also wanted me to help cheer Vincent up. Vincent's been cooped in his room since the previous day. According to Andrew, Vincent’s patient with cancer wasn’t getting any better. The male patient had decided that the best thing was to stop his chemo and all the drugs that made him sick. He was going to spend his last days with his family. Vincent was trying to recuperate from all that event, but all Andrew could see was his brother’s deteriorating mood. He was dreading leaving him in that state. We entered the house and headed straight to Vincent's room. I had imagined his room to be razor-sharp neat with everything in place. It was pretty close if not for the few books scattered all over the reading table and the rumpled bed where Vincent lay beneath the covers, with his eyes closed. His room was set in white and black contrast, the same as the living room. Anne Downstairs, Andrew had already put the rice on the stove and was cutting the vegetables when he caught sight of our presence in the kitchen. He turned to us with a huge grin on his face. “Finally, you have managed to get that log of wood out of the bed,” he teased. Vincent picked up a frying pan and held it up in a threatening manner towards Andrew, daring him to say more. Andrew, on seeing this, raised his hands in surrender, then went back to his chopping with a mischievous glint on his face. Anne “Not bad,” Vincent acknowledged as we walked side by side along the empty road away from my hostel. This was the area we called the sambisa forest due to its underdevelopment, but the school recently had it revamped, giving it a tourist worthy landscape. Though it wasn’t a place filled with long grasses and sand anymore, it still retained its name and unpleasant memories. “Told you,” I beamed. He removed his blue Jean jacket and held it down on his left hand, leaving just his signature white polo and a black pair of jeans. “How’re your studies?” He asked, staring ahead while swinging his jacket back and forth. He looked so relaxed it made my heart swell. “Stressful as always,” I answered. He chuckled and glanced at me. “Yeah!” I emphasized. “Hmm,” he moaned, pouting his lips thoughtfully. “Well, you signed up for it.” “I know! Anne I felt a hand slip into my PJs and began walking its magic there. A moan escaped my lips as sensual pressure built in my core. I was lying on our king-sized bed with white sheets and a duvet, in our large bedroom. I’m too sleepy or maybe lazy to describe it. Just take this though, the walls are white. The side tables holding up the bedside lamps are also white but with golden designs along the edges, matching that of the bed frame, which has extra huge golden spirals on the tall headrest just above my pillow. By the corner, a long wooden cabinet that holds several drawers is attached to the wall. On top of the cabinet are different figurines and sculptures, then close to it is a magnificent white dressing table that houses my very few beauty products, and an equally magnificent mirror with the same golden design on its edges. There are two walk-in closets on opposite sides of the room. One is for Vincent and the other, mine. A second door closer to my closet lead to the bathroo

Vincent The heavens grumbled like an old giant before I began feeling splatters of droplets on me. I glanced up at the skies and smiled. It was as if it knew how I felt inside. It was a thunderous feeling. I sped past cars on Andrew’s bike, squinting to see clearly as the rain had begun pouring with reckless abandon. How didn’t I see it? How could one be so close, yet so far away?! I felt what I felt, but I just couldn’t see what I was supposed to see, simply because of amnesia. Now it’s all coming back to me! Like a waterfall crashing against the oceans, my memories came flooding in. “I’m coming, Anne. Just wait, okay? I’m coming,” I breathed, maneuvering through the impending hold-up that the rain caused. ‘Slow down you dumb-a**’ my mind warned. I listened to it and went slower till I was off the traffic and onto the small road leading to Anny’s. My heart pounded against my chest as I neared her apartment. The gate that’d had been there when I rented the place for her was un

Vincent Arya made it sound like I had the best of times with her. She may be right because the feelings I had for her couldn’t have been created by mere moments. We must have gone through thick and thin for me to have realized what I had and cherish it. Arya made me to almost desire to stay back and savage the little I could from all we had left. I couldn’t. Because I was hurt. I lost my memory. I couldn’t remember any of my time with her, or even her face, yet I couldn’t get myself to make love to any other woman. She had all the knowledge. She knew all the bits and pieces of our trials and tribulations, but the moment I step out of the picture, she finds solace in the arms of my brother. Now, she has a baby for him. I couldn’t live with that. Her love for me didn’t nearly match the way I felt for her. I couldn’t fight when she’d already given up a year ago. Why didn’t she come after me? Why didn’t she make plans to make me remember slowly? She only comfortably devised plans

Anne The knock on the door made me jerk and involuntarily drop the scissors outside the bathtub. Andrew couldn’t have been back so early, and definitely won’t be knocking gently. Pamela wouldn’t too. Who could be knocking? My dead heart arose and, like a diver, dipped into the pit of my stomach as the thought of Vincent being the one at the door entered my head. It couldn’t be, could it? He should be in the airport now if he wasn’t on the plane already. I didn’t really care to check the time since Andrew left. Is It possible that Andrew had talked Vincent out of leaving? That’ll be if he saw him on time. I didn’t want to ignite my hope only to watch it explode in my face yet again. I’d wanted to wait a bit to see if the caller would go away, but then the knocking would wake Lucia, who’d begin crying and wake my mother. That thought made me hurriedly step out of the bathtub. My legs were wobbly from all the fear and trepidation of what I’d decided to do. I gingerly put one foot i

Finally, the time has come. I made sure I locked all the doors for the night before heading to my room. Pamela had come earlier and suggested staying with me till Andrew comes or calls. Andrew must have called her to come. Well, I refused all her persistence and almost got angry at her stubbornness. She’d grudgingly accepted to leave. In my room, I took out a pen and scribbled down a few thoughts of mine. I hadn’t time to write a full epistle because I was hurting badly. If I did have the time, I would have written long notes to every one of the people I know who would be hurt by my actions. I’d wanted to live for Lucia, but seeing her face, eyes and long hair reminded me so much of him. One would think that wo

There was peace, followed by fear, then agitation, trepidation, fury, and what have you? It was strange. Her name held so much power, yet I couldn’t still remember.
