Rhys' POV

The knocking wouldn’t stop. Each pound on the door was a hammer to my skull, sending waves of pain through my head. I groaned, burying my face in the pillow, trying to block it all out but the knocking persisted.

“Go away!” I mumbled, my voice barely more than a croak.

“Rhys, open up! It’s Duncan,” came the reply.

I squinted at the sliver of light streaming through the curtains, each ray a needle in my eyes. What could Duncan possibly want at this hour? And why did my mouth taste like an ashtray?

“Duncan, leave me alone!” I shouted, immediately regretting the effort as pain shot through my temples.

There was a pause, and for a moment, I thought he might actually leave. But then the door creaked open, and there he was, standing in the doorway, looking annoyingly fresh and awake.

“We don’t have time for this, Rhys. You’re already an hour late,” he said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation.
