Mara’s POV

Our footsteps echoed in the cavernous place and the further we walked in, the nervous I became.

“How long have I been away,” I asked, feeling a bit lost on all that had been happening.

Rhys pulled me behind him and I struggled to follow, favoring my leg. As the door swung closed, the lights became a diminishing silver. The mall smell of marble and rot, but the wind swept away the worst of it, whistling in through the shattered floor

“I fucking knew it!” He scowled running a hand through his hair as he placed a hand on his sides, with his eyes glued to the floor. Mara's heart pounded in her ears. The cavern was a labyrinth of shadows, and with each creak and groan of the building, her anxiety spiked. She glanced around, trying to commit the darkness to memory, in case they needed to retrace their steps.

"What do we do now?" she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. She was aware of Rhys's intense focus, but she needed him to speak, to reassure her. The silence was deaf
