“Mack, what are you thinking about?” Haven asked, bringing him back to the here and now. He looked over at her as she looked at him.
“One of the best days I had.” He replied with a grin forming.
“Oh, really?” she asked as she looked at him, “What day was that?”
“Your birthday.” He said as he watched her search for her memories for the day. “Sweetheart, it is fine. You don’t have to remember it so much.”
Mack was handed his phone from the pocket of his uniform after she dug around in his bag for it with his belongings. She gave it to him, and he made the call knowing they were at best fifteen minutes away. They would respond to the call, and as soon as he got someone to talk to, he explained the situation without actually saying it. He knew they knew he had been shot. The person that he was talking to was trying to get him to stay at the hospital, but in the end, Mack won that argument, and they would be sending over a few units to help get him out if that was what he really wanted. He sighed, knowing that back up in the form of other cops was coming soon enough. That did release some of the tension he had throughout his body.
Mack threw on his shirt or what was left of it when he got the text that his back up was in the lobby. He knew he was safe, and so was she. To him, that was more important than himself. Haven had to get out of here without being touched by anyone. She had already stumbled into this mess headfirst and left her job because of it as well. He would not have anything to her because of him. Now she looked more confused because the patient information wasn’t there. He thought maybe it could be a mix up they just hadn’t corrected yet. He was rushed in there with many others. He knew better though. This was a way to erase him because he knew too much. He also knew that his arm hurt, but he couldn’t let the pain distract him. His shirt
Mack sat back as he watched her drive. The seat was so far up she was too close to the steering wheel for his taste. He knew it was because of her tiny legs, but he knew if something happened, she would get hurt. He was trying to think of anything that would distract him from thinking of her at the moment. “Did you want to go to your house first to grab some stuff?” she asked.“Actually, since we know most of them are at the hospital, that might not be a bad idea. We have to be quick, and I will need your help.’ He said as he looked in the back seat with the box that was there. He saw the picture on the top, and he moved to the side and lifted it up. He was shocked. “Haven, why did you have this in your office?&rdqu
10“Big oaf?” he asked with a smirk. “Really, that is the best you could come up with?” “New year's resolution not to swear so much.” She said as she looked in the mirror with a smile. “It was by far not what I wanted to say.”“Haven, I am serious though you can’t be involved in this. I can’t let anything happen to you.” Mack said, and she could see the pleading in his eyes.
He looked at her through hazy eyes when he saw her moving in the room. “And where do you planning on sleeping?”“The couch.” She replied. “It is comfortable enough.”“No,” he said as he looked at her as she came closer. “What do you mean no. Mack, this is my house. I can sleep where ever I want to.” She laughed slightly. “You need to rest. Despite you thinking yourself to be superman. The bullet that hit you was real.”“Tru
“Mack,” Haven said softly. “Never again.” He whispered on her lips as he kissed her again. Her hands stayed around his neck, and he took his time her. Though he was stopped thinking totally, he just let everything happen as it needed to. When he pulled back again, he looked at her as her eyes opened. “You are never going to disappear from me again. I need you too much, Haven.”“Need?” she asked as she looked at him with confusion in her eyes. “Need.” He said as he looked at her. “Haven, I was your friend. In your mi
“I am still not sleeping in your room, though.” He said with a smile. “Not yet, at least.”“Mack.” She said softly. “There is a time and place for everything, and we don’t need to rush things. We have a few things to catch up on.” Mack said as he smiled into her eyes. “The important things didn’t change, though.”“Mack.” She said as she shook her head. “You can’t just assume things.”“Am I assu
He looked in the room and saw it was furnished with a small cot bed and a computer. “I think you might need to explain this to me.” He said softly as she took a step in. “What is to explain?” She asked. “It came with the house.”“But why?” he asked as he turned to her.“I’m not sure. I thought it was cool, but it would never really have a big purpose here. There is another smaller one in the basement that is supposed to be a wine cellar but has a safe room of sorts that is concealed.” Haven said with a shoulder shrug
Five years later.“How silly is this?” Haven asked as she looked at Mack in their backyard, and she held up the invitation to her brothers' wedding. “They really want me to come to it without you.”“Well, you could go.” He said with a shoulder shrug.“And go with who?” she asked with a smile. “Jonathon?” “Well, you could go with him.” Mack s
The flight to Vegas was quick, and he didn’t have a real plan for when they got there. He had time to think about everything and plan this out for her. The bright lights and people were enough to keep her busy for the moment. He looked up the where they had to go to and then started walking that way. He had an idea of the things that they needed, and luckily for him, she also had everything there. He smiled to himself, and then they were in front of the building. “This is your last chance.” He said softly. “Yes, because I chose to fly halfway across the country with you to say no.” Haven said as she started up the steps and then loo
“Haven, Will you marry me so I can have you for the rest of my life?” Mack asked as he slipped something on her finger. “I wanted to finish what we began years ago and make it so we can move on to newer and better things.” “Mack.” She said. “A few days. We have been together for a few days, that is it. What are you doing right now?” “No, we were with each other every day for the last decade and more.” He said as he looked at her. The look in his eyes was e
Mack walked out, knowing that this whole thing was mostly over for them. He would have more to do when he got back to work, but now he had to begin the process of getting her on board with everything that he wanted out of their joint lives. He smiled when he remembered the small things they used to do on campus when they were there. He looked at her and smiled, and with a sigh, “I think we have some things to do.” “Like?” she asked as she looked at him with her head tilted upwards. She had no idea of the things he was planning.“Can I drive?” he
“In the hospital, when a code is called, all doctors have to respond, even ones like me, if I am there.” Haven said as she looked at the man, “I was busy getting coffee and ice. The ice in the emergency room is always the best in the hospital. I have no idea why. I went to the one that was just arriving, and that was Mack. I looked at him, and he looked at me. We hadn’t seen each other in years, but he was the same. I said his name, and the doctor who took the lead heard me. I was reassigned to the other patient because of the friends and family policy at the hospital. You can’t work on people you know.” “Sounds like a good policy.” The captain said.
“Haven, what are you saying?” Mack asked as she stared in the direction of the man.“I have seen him recently.” She said as she looked at him. “Mack, you know I remember everything.” “I know.” He said as she looked at the older man, “She is a genius. She has a photographic memory as well. If she says she saw him, she did.” “Everyone here is clean, though.” The older man said as he looked in the direction of the man, and he took a large breath of air into his lungs. “He isn’t one of mine, though.&rd
The station house was busy as people were darting everywhere around the desks. It almost looked like they were over the number of people that could be in there. However, when Mack walked in, they all stopped and looked at him. He was standing tall and in a polo shirt and slacks that made him seem almost untouchable. This was different then what they knew him to wear. Women’s eyes went wide, and the men all had a shadow pass over their faces. It was like Mack was almost a demon or something to these people. It had to be because he had made so much work for them. Haven knew that this was going to be the thing he was remembered for the entirety of his career. He was the lynchpin to bringing down an entire police department and the criminal s
The drive out of the house was peaceful though Haven didn’t know what to really expect when the garage door opened up. She was hoping this wouldn’t turn into a huge thing where she and Mack were being chased down. There was no one there waiting for them to leave. She had to smile to herself that it was nothing like what she had thought it would be. Mack looked out the windows and was slightly smiling to himself. This might be the exact thing he needed to finally be happy and free from the other department. He really didn’t want his name attached to them and all that they had a hand in. He would forever be labeled as a dirty cop if this hadn’t happened.
As he looked at them, he knew it was time for them to act. “They need me to come in.” Mack said, and she looked at him.“What?” Haven asked as she looked at him, surprised. “It is time to come out of hiding,” Mack said with a chuckle. “The main players are all taken in, including your cousin,” Mack said. “With the help of your brother, they found out enough to finally pick him up.”“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Haven asked as she looked at him. They both stood up, and he bent down to cover her mouth with
