Zara's face fell for a second. A glint of hurt flashed in her rheumy eyes. Under Mia's intense gaze, she coughed and shrugged again. "What has that got to do with me? He's free to buy any kind of clothes."
After sighing deeply, Mia said in a low tone, "He was actually in the company of Cora. When she saw me, she rubbed her belly. I think she's pregnant for Scott."
This bombshell was even heavier than the first. Zara's lashes fluttered uncontrollably this time. A pang of pain traveled from her heart to her head. When her eyes met Mia's, she looked away and stared at the flower vase nearby.
"Ermm..." She stood up abruptly. "I have many important things to do. Actually, I'll be resuming work at my family's firm in two days. I have to shop for clothes and also get my hair and nails done. Wanna come?"
Mia sighed again and then nodded, deciding not to talk about Scott anymore since the topic wasn't welcome. "Go get changed. I know of the best store in town for professional and casual wear."
Without hesitation, Zara ran to her bedroom. Once she shut the door, she leaned her back against it and slowly sank to the floor. There was a painful lump in her throat now. She could no longer hold back the tears.
All the hurt she kept buried in the last year came rushing to the surface like molten magma. Scott impregnated Cora! How could he? He always denied having anything to do with her, but it was all a lie!
Despite everything Zara did for him, he refused to make love to her. All her efforts to seduce him and make him fall for her failed. Cora was always the third person in their marriage and even their friendship when they were younger.
Again, Scott chose Cora over her. Again, she was relegated to the background!
Enough is enough! Zara wiped the warm tears from her face and sniffed hard. She vowed with all seriousness, "I'm not going to cry over that man again! He was stupid enough to have taken my love for granted, but I won't be stupid anymore to continue giving him my love. Since he wants to be with Cora, then good luck to him. He had better grant me that divorce now that I'm back!"

Scott walked into the elevator with his assistant, Andrew Parker. He looked at his watch and asked, "Any news from Keystone?"
"Nothing yet, sir. I spoke to the secretary, but she asked me to send the brief and some details about the company. The way I see it, we have an edge in getting the contract."
"That's what I think too, but let's not celebrate too early. I hear their CEO, Jordan Keystone is not a straightforward man," Scott said with a slight look of worry.
Leaning against the handrail, he said, "I want you to look into the other companies that will be lobbying for—"
Scott stopped midway. He took out his buzzing phone from his pocket and looked at the screen. When he saw the caller ID, he clenched his jaw and stared blankly before hitting the green icon angrily. "What is it?"
"Come on, baby. Is that how you say hello to the love of your life and mother to your unborn child?" A female voice came from the other end of the line.
"What do you want, Cora?" Scott asked impatiently.
"Humph!" Cora huffed before saying, "Well, I FaceTimed you earlier, but you didn't answer—"
Scott interrupted, "I was in a meeting. You do know that some of us work, right?"
Cora cried, "Are you mad at me, honey? I didn't mean to disturb your work, but I was just feeling feverish earlier. The baby is really making me uncomfortable."
Hearing this, Scott couldn't help letting out a deep sigh. He held his forehead and asked, "How do you feel now? Do you need me to take you to the hospital? Where are you?"
"Aww! I actually feel much better now. Most of my clothes are becoming a little tighter, so I went shopping with Brenda. I'm not sure what clothes to pick. How about I video call you so you could help?"
"That won't be possible. I have some important business to attend to. Call me when you get to your parents'," Scott said and then hung up, not sparing her another second.
Somewhere in Beecroft, Cora Anderson stamped her foot as soon as she heard the disconnect tone. This was one of the many times Scott was refusing to spare time out for her. What should she do to soften that hardened heart of his?
"Look, Cora. This might look good on you," Brenda Francis called out, walking over with a yellow dress.
"No, it's ugly!" Cora shouted, "How can you even suggest that?"
Brenda, although a little appalled by the shout, didn't show it. She just smiled and went away to pick out something else.
Just as Cora was staring at her phone and contemplating whether to call Scott again, the door of the clothing shop was opened from outside. Two gorgeous women walked.
"Welcome, ladies. How may I help you today?" a shop attendant said, walking up to them.
"Hello, can you direct us to your professional wear section? I want to shop for some suits and official dresses."
At the sound of the familiar voice, Cora turned to the side and craned her neck. Her eyes widened when she saw Zara, her long-time rival. Jealousy flashed in her eyes as they narrowed. "Gosh, so this bitch is really back. She looks more... Argh!"
Pained by Zara's gorgeous look, Cora decided to make trouble. She primped in front of the mirror nearby before walking over. "Well, well, well! Look who we have here!"
Zara's face fell for the second time today. When she saw Cora, she bit her lower lip in regret. She then glanced at Mia who was standing by her side. Rising to the occasion, Mia held her friend's hand and walked forward. She then mimicked, "Look who we have here!"
"I didn't think I'd bump into you again, Cora. It's as if you are everywhere these days," she added sarcastically.
With an eye roll, Cora ignored her and looked at Zara. "I didn't know you were in town, Zara. You disappeared for a whole year. Why didn't you stay in touch?"
"Why should she?" Mia fired.
Cora smirked and shrugged. "Zara, we were friends, remember?"
"Keyword, were! Good friends don't break their friend's marriage!" Mia retorted once again as Zara stood speechlessly.
"Oh, come on!" Cora waved her hand. "I didn't break anyone's marriage. Things just didn't work out between Scott and Zara. He has only had eyes for me, and Zara is well aware of that."
Rubbing her belly, she continued, "It's such a pity that their grandmothers forced them to get married. But it's all good now, right? Zara needs to move on with her life while Scott and I move on with ours."
Mia frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Oh, you haven't heard?" Cora waved with a smile as she looked at their faces one after the other. "I'm pregnant with Scott's child. And we are getting married soon!"
A burning sensation suffused Zara's chest. It traveled to her stomach and soon caused it to ache badly. Her face twisted in a frown as she processed what she had just heard.Relishing the sad look on Zara's face, Cora rubbed her slightly bulged belly and added, "It has been a long time coming. Scott and I are meant for each other. We have been in love since we were kids. Soon, we will be together against all odds."Those words added salt to Zara's injury. She was at a loss for a few seconds. But once she got back herself, she pulled Mia's arm and dragged her out. "Let's go!""Zara, let's catch up some other time. I'll send you an invitation to the wedding. Ciao!" Cora called out from behind.Tears had clouded Zara's vision by the time she was out of the store. She swallowed hard and blinked while repeating an admonishment in her head. Don't cry over a man, Zara! "You okay, Zee?" Mia asked with worry after they got into her car. She read her expression and then gave her shoulder a squ
A tumult of murmurs broke out in the hall. Scott, who was about to pick a fight, could only stare at Zara. He couldn't believe that she came here to make a presentation for the contract. Since when was she involved in business? Besides, when did she even get back? Finally, Zara faced the crowd and introduced herself. "I'm Zara Hall, the new CEO of Hall Corporations. Most of you may not know me, but I assure you that you will be seeing more of my face from now on.""Hall Corporations? Isn't that the company that's on the verge of bankruptcy?" someone exclaimed.Another replied affirmatively, "Yeah. Last I checked, it was about to be liquidated."Zara didn't utter a word to those comments. After all, they were true. Her company was hanging by a thread now."Young lady, who allowed you in here?" a man with a potbelly finally fired with a frown."Ladies and gentlemen, I didn't mean to barge in here, but last I checked, every human has the freedom of movement," Zara began. Her eyes scanned
"Ow!" Zara screamed once his forehead hit her chest. She quickly held him before his body fell to the hard floor. "What's wrong with you, Scott? Are you okay?"There was no answer. Painstakingly, Zara put his arm over her shoulders and kicked open the door. She walked in to find the living in a mess. The sofas were upturned and the glass table at the center was broken. "What the hell happened here?"Seeing that he was passed out cold, she dragged him to the bedroom. It took her almost twenty minutes to do that. By the time she threw him to the bed, she was sweating all over and staggering.Scott didn't move a muscle on the bed. As Zara bit her lower lip hard, a war broke out in her head. She held her breath and moved closer to him. Once her hand touched his forehead, she retreated sharply. He was burning up!Without further ado, she rushed into the bathroom and then returned with a bowl of cool water and two small towels. She wiped his face and arms carefully. Then, placed a wet towel
Scott swiped his phone screen for the umpteenth time today. He had been bombarding Zara with text messages, but she refused to reply to any of them. Gosh! She was driving him nuts."Mr. Brown... Mr. Brown, are you still with us?" a voice called out all of a sudden.Hearing that, Scott raised his head, only to find a dozen pairs of eyes staring at him. He had zoned out yet again. With embarrassment on his face, he cleared his throat. "I didn't get that. Come again."Some of the directors exchanged weird looks. Then, the director speaking, repeated slowly, "There has been a rumor making rounds in the business circle. Some people are saying that Keystone Group is likely to partner with Hall Corporations for the new city park project.""What?" Scott sat up immediately. "How is that possible? Who told you that?"A rumble ensued in the boardroom a second later. When Scott couldn't take it anymore, he shot to his feet and raised his hand. "Enough! This meeting is adjourned."As he walked bac
The courtroom was so silent that you could hear a pin drop. Zara held her breath with her eyes shut tightly. Please, just shut up! Don't say that we had sex. Just let me be. Let's go our separate ways.As if he could hear the words Zara said in her mind, Scott exhaled and continued, "Let's just say that I don't think this marriage should be dissolved. But since Zara wants it so bad, then so be it."What? Zara exclaimed in her mind as she sharply looked up again. Wasn't he about to air their dirty linen in public? He was smiling mischievously just now. Didn't he want to tell the court that they fucked so the case would be struck out of court? What got into him?In this surprised state, Zara didn't know how to feel. She wanted to be free, but a part of her was still in love with Scott."Since both parties have attested under oath and have agreed to the terms of the annulment, I hereby declare this marriage dissolved!" the judge announced and then hit the gavel on the block. A huge burde
Scott was standing before the French window in his office and staring blankly at the awesome view when his assistant, Andrew, walked in hurriedly. He turned with a scowl. "Can't you knock?""Sorry about that, sir. I wasn't thinking straight," Andrew immediately said with panic written all over his face. With his frown deepening, Scott spun around to face him. "What's wrong?""I... I was just informed that... That..." Andrew stuttered.Impatient, Scott yelled, "Out with it. What are you stuttering for?""Sir, I was just informed that Hall Corporations was granted the city park contract!""Ha-ha!" Scott sputtered a laugh. "You are joking, right? This is some April Fool's Day prank, isn't it?"Andrew inched his head back, bobbing his eyebrows at his boss. "I'm not joking, Mr. Brown. We are in June, not April."Seeing that his boss glanced at the calendar on the desk, he continued, "Hall Corporations really bagged the deal, but the contract hasn't been signed yet. I doubt they have even b
Zara pricked her ears up. She wanted nothing but a good way to keep the baby a secret from Scott, especially since they were now divorced. "Don't keep me in suspense. Spill!""Okay, okay." Mia raised both hands and moved closer to her. Her voice came out in a whisper. "How about you enter into a fake relationship with another man?""A fake relationship?" Zara's eyes widened at that."Yes! That way, even if Scott finds out that you are pregnant, he won't be inclined to believe that the baby is his. You just have to make it known that you were seeing this guy when you were abroad and he's the father of your baby."Zara leaned back and tapped her chin. That was not a bad idea. However, it was a tough thing to do. "It sounds like a good idea," she said and then released a big sigh. "But where do I find such a man? You know, men always want sex or money in return for most things. How can I convince a man to act as my partner with no strings attached?"Mia shrugged. "It's pretty easy. Just
"How is she, doc? Is the baby okay?" Scott asked the doctor as soon as he strode out of the VIP ward. The doctor put away his stethoscope and dismissed the nurse beside him. "There's no cause for alarm, Mr. Brown. She just suffered from some contractions and pain in the pelvis. The baby is safe. However, she needs to spend some time here so we can examine her further. I also advise that she doesn't go through much stress from now on. Her blood pressure is quite high."Scott finally breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay, doc. Thank you."After going through the rest of the formalities for admission, Scott finally walked into the ward. He found Cora lying on the bed with a sad expression on her face. She also looked distant."Hey, are you okay?" he asked, moving closer to the bed."Of course, I'm not okay!" she cried, turning to her side. "I am in a lot of pain. If you hadn't shoved me aside, I wouldn't be in this state now."Scott sat down on the chair by the bedside. With complicated emoti
