Elena's Pov:

The sound of Daniel’s knock echoed through the quiet house, sharp and punctual. I rushed to the door, my heart pounding. Seeing him standing there, his usual composed expression softening when our eyes met, brought a flicker of relief.

“Elena,” he greeted, stepping inside as I held the door open. “Sorry for the delay. My flight was delayed, and—”

“It’s fine,” I interrupted, closing the door behind him. “Thank you for coming.”

Daniel glanced around the living room, his gaze lingering on the stack of unopened mail and half-packed boxes. “Are you moving?”

“No,” I said quickly. “Just… reorganizing.”

He gave me a small nod, his attention shifting back to me. “So, what’s going on? You sounded urgent on the phone.”

I hesitated, my hand instinctively brushing over my stomach. The words felt heavy in my throat, tangled with nerves and uncertainty.

“I’m pregnant,” I finally said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Daniel’s brow furrowed, and for a moment, he didn’t say anything. Then, his eyes widened slightly. “I see.”

I studied his face, trying to gauge his reaction. “I needed to tell you because… I’m not sure where we stand, and—”

A loud bang at the door interrupted me, making both of us jump.

“Elena!” Ethan’s voice rang out, deep and furious.

I froze, panic surging through me. “Oh no,” I muttered under my breath.

Daniel looked toward the door, then back at me, his confusion evident. “Who is that?”

“It’s Ethan,” I said, my voice tight.

Before I could stop him, Ethan burst through the door, his presence filling the room like a storm. His eyes immediately zeroed in on Daniel, and his expression darkened.

“What the hell is he doing here?” Ethan demanded, his voice low and dangerous.

I stepped between them, holding up a hand. “Ethan, calm down. This isn’t what you think—”

“Oh, I think I understand perfectly,” he snapped, his gaze darting to Daniel. “You’re already moving on, aren’t you? Was this your plan all along? Get rid of me so you could shack up with him?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened, but he stayed composed. “I don’t know who you are, but I suggest you lower your voice.”

“Lower my voice?” Ethan barked, his anger flaring. “You don’t get to tell me what to do. This is my child we’re talking about!”

“Ethan, stop,” I said, stepping closer to him. “This isn’t about you or Daniel. This is about me and the baby. You need to—”

“Don’t tell me to stop!” Ethan cut me off, his voice shaking with fury. He pointed at Daniel. “Is he the reason you’re so desperate to keep me out of this? Is he the father?”

That question sliced through me like a blade. I swallowed hard, feeling my stomach twist. The father? Of course, Ethan had the right to ask. But how was I supposed to answer? How could I tell him it wasn’t his when I wasn’t sure myself? What if it is? What if everything I’ve been running from is now coming back to haunt me? I couldn’t escape that thought, no matter how hard I tried.

“That’s enough!” Daniel’s voice was firm now, his calm demeanor cracking just slightly. “You don’t get to come in here and throw around accusations without knowing the facts.”

“The facts?” Ethan turned to me, his eyes blazing. “Fine. Let’s talk about facts, Elena. Fact: we were together that night. Fact: you’re pregnant. Fact: that baby is mine, and I have every right to be involved.”

I felt the pressure in my chest, suffocating me. The truth, the reality of this situation, felt so far out of my reach. I wanted to scream, to throw my hands up and say I didn’t know. But I couldn’t. Because I did. I knew. I knew everything was tangled up—Ethan, Daniel, my pregnancy. And no matter how many times I told myself it wasn’t supposed to be like this, it was. This was my reality.

“Ethan, you’re making this worse,” I whispered, but he wasn’t listening.

“No,” he said, his voice dropping to a cold, deliberate tone. “I’m making it clear. If that child is mine, I’ll do whatever it takes to be part of their life. And if you think for one second you can keep me away, you’re wrong.”

How could I keep him away? How could I tell him it’s not his child when I couldn’t even tell myself the truth? I shook my head, the thoughts swirling. This is my fault. I put myself in this position. I should’ve known better.

Daniel took a step forward, positioning himself slightly in front of me. “Ethan, you need to leave. Now. This isn’t the time or place for this.”

Ethan let out a bitter laugh. “Oh, I bet you’d love that, wouldn’t you? Get rid of me so you can play house with Elena and my kid.”

Daniel’s hands curled into fists at his sides, but he didn’t respond, his restraint evident.

“Stop it, both of you!” I shouted, my voice cracking. “This is not about you two fighting over who gets to control my life!”

Ethan turned back to me, his expression shifting from anger to something colder, more calculating. “If you’re so sure this baby isn’t mine, then prove it. Take a paternity test.”

The air seemed to leave my lungs at that. A paternity test. I couldn’t even look at him, couldn’t bring myself to process what he was asking. Could it be his? I didn’t want to admit it. I couldn’t. But I wasn’t sure anymore.

“I… I can’t just—” I began, but the words wouldn’t come out. The weight of everything pressed down on me, and I felt dizzy.

His lips curled into a bitter smile. “You’ll prove it, Elena. Or I’ll make sure you lose everything.”

The weight of his words hung heavy in the room, and for a moment, no one spoke. Then Ethan turned and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

I stood frozen, my heart pounding, tears streaming down my face.

“Elena,” Daniel said softly, his voice filled with concern.

I shook my head, unable to speak. The storm Ethan had brought with him wasn’t over—it was just beginning.
