That night, I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the soft glow of the bedside lamp, my thoughts heavy. The confrontation with my parents still lingered in my mind, replaying like a broken record.

I had been so certain about emancipation, so sure that cutting legal ties with them was the only way to truly free myself. But now… Jack’s words gnawed at me.

Was I making this decision for the right reasons? Or was it purely out of anger?

I sighed, running a hand over my belly. My baby. My child was coming into this world soon, and despite everything, a part of me wondered if I was letting my emotions dictate something I might regret later.

The sound of the door creaking open pulled me from my thoughts.

Jack stepped inside, his expression soft yet searching. He had been giving me space since our earlier conversation, but I could tell he was waiting for me to make a decision.

“You’re still up,” he murmured, closing the door behind him.

I nodded, my fingers tracing mindless patterns on the

A few months later...The past few months had been a blur of anticipation, exhaustion, and overwhelming love. I had spent my last trimester preparing for the arrival of my baby, cherishing every little kick, every movement, every moment leading up to the day I would finally hold my child in my arms. And then it happened.I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl.Jack had been out of town on urgent business. It wasn’t his fault, but it still hurt that he had missed the birth of our first child, our beautiful daughter. He had been devastated when I called him, his voice thick with guilt and frustration."I should have been there, Sophia. I should have—""Jack, it’s okay. She’s here now, and she’s perfect."He had promised to make it up to us, swearing that he would be on the next available flight home. I believed him. The hospital stay had been brief—just long enough for the doctors to ensure my baby and I were healthy. As much as I appreciated their care, I was eager to go home,

Before I could think of a plan, the SUV slowed down, its tires crunching against gravel. The sudden shift in speed made my stomach drop.We were close.Close to wherever they were taking me.Close to whatever fate awaited me and my baby.I swallowed hard, forcing down the rising terror clawing at my throat. I couldn’t let fear take over. Not now. Not when I still had a chance to fight. The car veered off the main road onto a narrower, dimly lit path surrounded by towering trees. My pulse spiked as realization dawned—this wasn’t just some hidden warehouse or an abandoned building. They were taking me somewhere remote.Somewhere no one would hear me scream.I tightened my grip on my daughter, shielding her tiny form with my arms. She whimpered softly in her sleep, oblivious to the nightmare unfolding around her.I forced myself to focus.Every detail mattered.I scanned the surroundings through the tinted window. Before I could think of a way out, one of the men shoved me forward, forcing me inside the cabin. The wooden floor creaked beneath my feet as I stumbled, barely managing to keep my grip on my daughter. The air inside was damp, heavy with dust and the faint scent of mildew. The only source of light was a flickering bulb overhead, casting eerie shadows across the room. The door slammed shut behind me.I turned around, my breath coming in sharp, uneven gasps. “Mother, please. You don’t have to do this,” I pleaded, my voice barely steady.Karen simply smirked, pulling out a sleek phone from her coat pocket. “Oh, sweetheart, you think this is about what I have to do?” She chuckled, shaking her head. “This is about what he has to do.”I watched in horror as she summoned one of her men. Oh no, she was going to call Jack.,Karen didn’t call Jack directly. She was too smart for that.Instead, she turned to one of the men—the taller one with a scar running down his cheek. “Make the call,” she o

Hours passed in agonizing silence. The dimly lit room was suffocating, the air thick with the scent of dust and aged wood. My baby had finally stopped crying, her exhausted little body pressed tightly against my chest as she slept. I held her close, rocking her gently, whispering reassurances she couldn’t yet understand. But they weren’t just for her. They were for me too. I needed to stay strong. I needed to believe that this nightmare would end. The only sound was the occasional creak of the wooden floorboards outside the door, each noise making my body tense with anticipation. My heart pounded with fear, my mind racing with thoughts of what might come next. Would they move us? Would they hurt us? Would Jack find us before it was too late? Would he pay the ransom? And even after the payment, would we be freed? I needed to know my mother's next line of action. Then, finally, the moment I had been dreading came. The heavy lock clicked. I froze, my breath catching in my throat.

I sat on the cold wooden floor, my arms wrapped tightly around my daughter, rocking her gently as she slept. The room was dimly lit by the flickering bulb overhead, casting eerie shadows along the cracked walls. My body was exhausted, my mind overwhelmed, but sleep was the last thing on my mind. I had been counting the minutes, listening carefully to every sound outside my locked door, hoping—praying—for an opportunity to escape. And then I heard it. Laughter. Cheers. The sound of glasses clinking together. It was coming from the other room, the one Karen had taken over since bringing me here. I stiffened, straining my ears. “…Told you he’d pay,” a deep male voice said, followed by a low chuckle. “Well, of course, he did,” Karen’s voice rang out, full of satisfaction. “Jack isn’t stupid. He knows what happens when you refuse to cooperate.” My stomach clenched. Jack had paid. My heart twisted in my chest. What had they told him? Did he even know it was Karen behind this

I swallowed hard, forcing my racing thoughts into some form of coherence. Almost time for what? Where were they taking me? What else did my mother have planned? I looked down at my daughter again, her tiny body curled up peacefully. Completely unaware of the danger surrounding us. A fresh wave of determination surged through me. I had to protect her. Whatever it took, I had to get us out of this. The van continued down the road, the occasional bump making my body jolt against the seat. My wrists ached from the tight rope, but I refused to let the discomfort distract me. I needed to focus on my surroundings. Through the windshield, I could make out faint headlights in the distance, but they were few and far between. The road was isolated, dark, and lined with towering trees on either side. We weren’t in the city anymore. We were heading somewhere more remote. Somewhere harder to escape from. I clenched my fists. A sudden shift in the van’s speed made my stomach drop. We were

My blood ran cold. “No…” I whispered, my mind racing. Jack thought he had paid for our freedom. He thought he had saved us. But this was never about the money—it was about control. It was about my mother keeping me away from him permanently. “You’re insane,” I breathed, my entire body trembling with rage and fear. “Jack will never stop looking for me. No matter where you take me, he’ll find me.” Karen chuckled, amused by my defiance. “Oh, sweetheart,” she crooned. “By the time he realizes what’s happened, you’ll be long gone. A new life. A new identity. Far away from all of this.” I clenched my jaw, my nails digging into my palms. I had to think. I had to find a way out before it was too late. A sudden cry escaped my baby’s lips, and I immediately rocked her gently, murmuring soothing words even as my own world spiraled into chaos. Karen sighed dramatically. “See? And when he does—” She leaned in closer, cutting me off with a whisper that sent chills through me. “Jack won’t find you, sweetheart. I narrowed my eyes at Jack, trying to decipher the hidden meaning behind his words. "You're being cryptic," I accused, though a smile tugged at my lips. Jack chuckled, tightening his arms around me. "Patience, love," he murmured, pressing a lingering kiss to my cheek. "I promise you’ll like it." Before I could probe further, my mother interrupted, tugging at our hands. "You both need to dance! The DJ just switched to a slower song, and we can’t let all this romance go to waste!" I laughed as she pulled us toward the dance floor, Jack trailing behind with amusement in his eyes. The soft melody of a love song filled the air, and couples swayed in each other’s arms. Soon I caught sight of Jefferson and my mother moving together, whispering to one another as if the rest of the world had faded away. Seeing them like this—so in love—made my heart swell. For years, my mother had held onto the pain of losing Jefferson, believing they were never meant to be. But fate had given them

The wedding hall was a vision of elegance—golden chandeliers casting a warm glow, ivory drapes flowing like soft clouds, and the scent of fresh roses and peonies filling the air. Guests were already seated, their murmurs blending with the soft melody of a string quartet playing in the background.I walked through the corridors, my wedding gown trailing behind me, the intricate lace shimmering under the warm lights. The wedding was just two days away, and every second felt like a blur of last-minute preparations. The venue was set, the guests had confirmed their attendance, and my dress was finally hanging in my room, ready for the big day.Yet, despite all the excitement, an undercurrent of nerves buzzed beneath my skin.I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my reflection in the mirror. My heart pounded against my ribs, a mix of anticipation and anxiety.Karen, always attuned to my moods, plopped down beside me. “Alright, spill.
