“Is this what we're looking for?” Harold asked cautiously as the three of them encircled the glowing substance that was on the ground. The floor around it was rocky with white stones that also sparkled a little, perhaps because of the glow emanating from what had held the contestants' attention.

“We weren't even given a detailed description of what we were sent to find!” Penelope remarked in a frustrated tone.

“There's only one way to find out if this is it,” Derek said without taking his eyes off it.

Of the three, he inched towards it closer with slow footsteps while Harold stayed back, waiting for whatever it was that took Wolves on a yearly basis. It was beguiling that so far, he hadn't seen any signs of its existence but he remained alert, trusting his wolf to warn him of impending danger.

Derek bent down to pick it up and Harold held his breath, hoping for the best yet prepare for the worst.

The 'shadows' which they now knew as ghouls had been barely visible down in the cavern. Now they were although smoky, a lot lot easier to spot. It had to do with the full moon."The long arm of the goddess will always catch up with you," it responded before returning to pummeling on Penelope whose hair had peeled off her head and was scattered all over with touches of red blood here and there.Harold turned to look at Derek. He looked like a convulsing patient and his eyes had turned pure black. He was still on the ground, making quick, sudden jerks but nothing more.Harold let his wolf which was beginning to chew on his insides as it ached to b

Trisha and Wilkes fell silent as they both debated on who the message was from, it was to and what it meant."Do you think it is to Harold?""It is possibly anyone but I doubt it is to him. It will only make things more puzzling if it is.""It could be to Derek," Wilkes suggested. "Not Derek exactly but the ghoul in him."A long paused followed."Yes, it can. But why will they need to communicate with that ghoul alone if...?Trisha lost her ability to talk when the three contestants started running towards them like they were being chased.Although they couldn't hear what it was, Penelope stopped on her tracks all of a sudden and started talking. Then Harold pointed at the red sky and that was enough to propell her forward but before she took more than two steps, a ghoul attacked and sent her to the ground before pummeling on her like she was nothing but a pun

After Harold fell to the ground and it was registered that he wasn't getting up soon, there was a long silence between Trisha and Wilkes. They watched as the ghouls surrounded him and the two others like they were about to be sacrificed, chanting the mantra; "the long arm of the goddess will always catch up with you."After it had been chanted about half a dozen times, in an orderly fashion, the ghouls slowly picked up the three numb bodies and arranged them side by side like corpses about to be buried."What is happening here?" Wilkes asked, not daring to even blink his eyes lest he missed anything important."I wish I could answer that," Trisha said as she pushed her eyeglass up her nose with much more intensity than she ever had. She had to see all that was happening. "What is baffling me, though, is why Penelope and Derek were attacked. From Francis' journal, it is the wolves that bear the brunt of it

Trisha used the next couple of seconds to recollect herself from the floor but when she was up and running, there was no stopping her. From where she was, she took a few steps and sprang a surprise attack on the ghoul in the closest proximity to her which unfortunately had its attention fixed on Wilkes that was causing a lot of havoc, too.She jumped on its back which was quite weird as the ghouls were a mixture of both solid and (murky) gasses but before she thought of anything, shoved her wand deep into its ear and it roared tremendously. It swayed left and right, flew up into the air a little then landed again as it wanted to get Trisha off its back but she was cognizant that one silly mistake was all it'll take for her life to end, hence, she held on to the ghoul tighter. When the ghoul was beginning to accept that whatever that was attached to its bag will be there for a long time and was becoming les

Out of desperation, Trisha McLeon emptied all the water she and Wilkes had gotten from the lake in their water bottles on Harold. At that moment, better than anyone else, she understood how crucial it was that they started going back to school. She was skeptical about going back there but unfortunately, there was no other place to go to.Harold's face was expressionless and unmoving even in that moment of pure peace. Although she was scared to think of it, he was almost dead. The wolfsbane had affected him greatly."Wake up!" she growled as she frustratedly held on to the collar of the shirt he had on and yanked it, trying to see if that will wake him up but his body simply bounced up as she pulled him forward by his shirt and fell back to its normal, peaceful posture when she let go.She had tried all the healing spells she knew in the space of the fifteen minutes she had rested their backs against a rock whi

Dr. Giovanni, the Vice Chancellor of Golden Lake University, held the paper that had been handed to him in his hands as he watched Chloe leave his office. He knew who she was; the student professor Ericson had been having an affair with. The affair lasted for a couple of weeks, about five, but all that had gone down the drain now. That hadn't been the reason why Dr. Giovanni had suspended professor Ericson, though. No. He'd known about the forbidden affair but didn't care at all which was very unprofessional of him.The only reason why professor Ericson had sent him away was because of the threat he posed to the success of the contest. He, Ericson, had warned Harold but hadn't given him specific details of the contest and from what was in Dr. Giovanni's hands, he could see, too, that Ericson had given Harold a map which was mentioned at the end of the letter he'd written to Harold before departing, and a list of the things he need

"What are you doing?" Trisha whispered to Derek as she snuggled closer to the rock behind her to keep her more hidden. From her observation, Derek's eyes were darker than they were the last time with a smoky vibe and his lips had been so arched that they formed a permanent scowl. He turned to look at Trisha then once again opened his mouth to speak out loud to the ghouls which were catching up on them. "We're just behind... a rock!"After his proclamation which Trisha knew was a conscious act to put them in trouble, she understood what was going on. There were now to occupants of Derek's body; Derek himself and the ghoul. When one was in control, the other was utterly powerless and most of the time, the one in control was the ghoul. It was Derek that had helped her with a spell for Derek roughly a minute ago but now, he was gone, giving room to the ghoul. "This is the time," Harold told his wolf. "We must work hand in hand. No mistakes. No regrets. Perfection."The wolf growled a little meaning it had heard and understood what Harold had said. It was that growl that Trisha had heard before she let go of the shield and fell to the the ground. The ghouls took an extra second to attack the small group of Golden Lake students and in that fraction, Harold's wolf was able to study all the ghouls. They were seven in number - excluding the one that had made Derek's body its own base.Although that was quite much for the wolf to take on alone, not a thread of fear was found in him. It was the end of a session and although Harold and Wilkes especially had been to a rough start, things got a lot better after the contest and as they stood in their room, getting ready to go home for the holiday, for the first time since they had gotten to the school, they felt and behaved like other students.“Who is coming to take you home?” Harold asked Wilkes as he eyes lazily landed on the messy heap of cloth that were in his bag. There was no way he was going to take his time rearranging them. No, that was too much stress.“I'm not very sure,” Wilkes answered as his eyes scanned the room for any of his belongings he might have missed. The room was pretty empty compared to how it had been two hours ago. Even the bulb that shone a dark light had been taken from its socket. “I mean, it is either my aunt or her husband; my uncle, or them both.” He sighed as he looked back at his huge travelling bag that was on his bed. “I don't think it mat

For the first time since the new intakes had been in Golden Lake University, rain fell.It was on a Friday and most of the semester had gone. Things had gone back to normal or at least, almost had.Sarah returned back to her park after being told all what happened by Harold. She promised not to tell anyone anything but deep down, Harold knew it was only a matter of weeks - a month or two, if lucky - before she told someone all she had been told. All the same, they did tell her everything. She deserved to know the truth.Derek, too, was back to his old self: lively, goofy and weird and with him was the love of his life, Penelope, who acted like the perfect housewife who without doubt, she was going to be. She seemed content that way.Although Wilkes never and probably never will admit it, the couple - Derek and Penelope - made him jealous. One of the reasons he had been excited to resume in Golden

"What does this mean?" Wilkes asked as he, too, bent his neck over the sheet of paper.Harold read the words again. Just like in the first letter he had gotten, this, too, was warning him of something in the most confusing way possible."I don't know," he replied. "But I do know that this is from professor Ericson. He must have written it before he died. You know, expected us to search his room when he was gone.""That's unlikely," Wilkes said dryly. "It most likely is to someone who knows of its existence behind the clock and that person definitely isn't you - or me. Besides, how are you so certain it is from professor Ericson?""The handwriting. They're... similar. Don't you see it?""I don't. At all." He sighed then continued, "we'll compare the handwriting of this paper and the one from the letter we are certain he handed to you together when all of these is over.""Yes, seems l

Harold and Wilkes waited in professor Ericson's office, doing nothing. When the party were first in the cavern, their footsteps reached up above where Harold was but after roughly a minute, there was nothing to tell that those that had gone down there existed.“Do you have any reasons why you wanted is to come here?” Wilkes asked when it was just the both of them in (Late) professor Ericson's office. Harold almost always had a plan. He knew that.Harold looked around the room like it was his first time being in it.“No,” he said. “I just wanted us to be here when they went down there.”Wilkes looked puzzled. That didn't seem like Harold.“But now that we're here,” Harold continued, oblivious of Wilkes confusion, “why don't we just look around for whatever we can find.”He paused for a while and looked at Wilkes before continuing, “we never know what we might f

Trisha paced from left to right of Harold and Wilkes small room. It was either she was no longer aware of the presence of Brie and Penelope or she just wasn't bothered by their presence. The latter seemed the most feasible option."I'll have to call my dad this very moment," she said to no one in particular. She seemed to be talking to herself and the next second, her phone was in her hand, placing a call to reach her father. She brought the phone to her ear and waited. After what seemed like ages to the two females watching her, she breath in and out deeply, and began to speak."Hello, father," she started. There was a pause from her side because her father was talking. It went on and on and on but Trisha understood why. He hadn't spoken to his daughter in over a week and was worried something awful must have happened to her."Why didn't you pick your calls?" he asked. His voice was a lot louder than befo

Harold and Wilkes picked up pace as they ran back to Dr. Alvin Clarks's office. Their sneakers marched on the tuffs of grass and on the cemented pavement, too, but they didn't bother as they huffed and puffed. The breeze as they moved blew against their faces but that, too, didn't stop them. They had to get to Dr. Clark before he and the others left. When they got to the entrance of the building, they stopped running and walked in.The receptionist recognised them and gave them a small nod telling them to proceed with the reason they were there. The both of them acknowledged her nod and went to the elevator. They loved as their sneakers sunk into the red carpet the spread everywhere. They turned right and continued walking.“Do you think

She had the pizza box Penelope had asked for in her hand.“I didn't know which ones you like over the other so I went with good old Pepperoni.”Penelope's nose wiggled like a mouse's. “It isn't my favourite,” she started, “but isn't my worst either. Thank you,” she said as she got the box out of Brie's hands. She put it on the bed and walked to Derek' side. She knelt beside his bed but Brie peered down on him from above.“He's conscious already,” Penelope said, sounding like a small child who had just gotten a gift. She was talking to Brie.“Oh, has he?” Brie said, kneeling, too. “I can't handle it much any longer.”“Handle what?” Penelope asked, looking to her right, at Brie.“His sister, she has been dead worri
