"Where are our bags?" Wilkes whispered in an alarming tone as him and Trisha watched Harold, Derek and Penelope walk to a grey limousine that was parked beside the auditorium.
Four men all dressed in black tuxedos, tinted glasses and wristwatches that beeped with a red light walked before them like bodyguards and Dr. Peyton Giovanni walked behind them with a vile smile.
"They're at my hostel. We have to get them now and meet Harold at the gate," Trisha said pretty loudly so that Wilkes could hear her over the cheers from the students that watched their representative leave.
They both gave Harold a long, lasting look as he sunk into the limousine then with a lot of struggle, they forced their way through the noisy crowd and began running. They had to beat the limousine.
"Any shortcuts?" Wilkes asked as they ran past a lamp post that was blackish with rust. It had stopped functioning for years and hadn't b
Penelope was the first to get out of the limousine that had transported them from the auditorium to the school's gate. When she was out, Derek who was quite confident of himself retrieving the orb and making enchanters like him proud stepped out, too, and lastly, Harold Girard, who had an expressionless look on his face exited the limousine. The three of them looked all around the intimidating green trees that could make the tallest of giants look like a midget. They were so absorbed in the experience that had started whether they were prepared or not to the extent that they weren't aware of the limousine steering its way back to the school until it was long gone.So far for Harold, though, things were going as professor Ericson had predicted. Penelope brought two guns; a very small-sized pistol and an hunting rifle that was slung over her shoulder. She had a a lot of cartridge in her bag, too, and barely brought any meals.D
If Harold, Penelope and Derek thought the forest was dark, it only got darker when the sun disappeared into the sky completely. It got so dark they couldn't see each other's silhouettes and had to use their flashlights to navigate past the naturally grown hedges of their odd environment.Having trekked what Harold calculated to be one-fourth the total landmass of the forest, they were physically tired and when they got to a snug location that gave them an almost 360° of the trees that surrounded them, they decided to rest there for the night because they couldn't take the chances of continuing only to be devoured or to find a place that wasn't as good as the one they had come across at that moment. As they settled on the small space that had soft grasses that popped out of the ground like they were on a picnic—without its luxuries, they continued their discussion, this time being Penelope's turn to talk.“I grew up with my grandmoth
Professor Ericson woke up with a gentle hammer that persisted at a soft and timely rhythm. He looked all around with his blurry vision, trying to remember where he was when the whiff of poop whacked his nostrils again and immediately, he remembered all that had happened. In short, he had visited Francis for help and had been drugged to sleep. Thankfully, it wasn't poison.Professor Ericson sniffed out the nasty foul from his nostrils as his eyes cleared even more, showing him the walls with peeling colour and white ceiling that had turned creamy with swipes here and there of grime that had accumulated over years. His sense of touch came back to him and he felt the heated and very uncomfortable surface he was on. Gradually, he sat up and he remembered it as the cushion he sat on before he fainted. No wonder it was uncomfortable and extremely hurt.A throat cleared and spoke up, “I was wondering when you
The stunning, orange-coloured embers of the wood Harold and the two others had set ablaze danced into the benighted atmosphere in permed curls with occasional hisses and fizzles as Harold, Derek and Penelope sat round the bonfire—for its warmth, whilst giving each other enough room to operate as their pupils tended to the hypnotizing flame.A cold, night wind swept through the forest and threatened to extinguish the flames which Derek was now holding a piece of meat over, but the flame although wavered, survived the gust.“You were saying something, Penny?” Derek said, as he moved away from the heat that was boiling his skin and heating his blood. The meat was fairly roasted but he wasn't going to grill himself for a chunk of meat. ‘That will be stupid’, he thought as he sat and looked at the meat for a part that could assuage his craving.Penelope's eyes shifted from the flame which was keepi
Harold's brows twitched at their edges as they knotted together in an intimidating frown. His breath, too, was mild and regular as sighs escaped through his lips and although he was in an unmoving stance like a statue, he was so in tune with the environment he was in—the forest, that he almost knew of every cricket that crawled past him on the earth and every bird that flew above them to safety. His knees which were a little bent ached as he stood still but he paid no regard to it as he held his sharp knife tightly in his right hand like his life was banked on it, him and the others waiting for the wild animal—not ghoul, he hoped, to come out from behind the thick trees. The only parts of his body which were moving were his heart which was pumping an incredible amount of adrenaline through his veins, ready to spring into action and his eyeballs which sometimes shifted to Derek who Harold thought had been behaving diffe
Trisha and Wilkes watched as Penelope told Harold and Derek about her childhood. It was emotional, no doubt about that but it wasn't their business. After watching the ghoul take control of Derek, they knew better than before the stakes at hand and that they had to watch over their friend and although the both of them had a rough start into finding Harold, it was a good thing they had stuck together or neither of them might have survived up to that moment. From where they were well hidden behind a thick bush that provided the perfect level of obscurity they wanted, they watched the fire ascend into the hair, veer with the wind, attenuate a little then return back to its normal height and intensity. From where they were, too, they had heard the thunderous growl that reverberated through the forest and they watched as Penelope, Derek and Harold get into a battle stance to protect themselves.Luckily, they, too, had prep
When Trisha and Wilkes had gone, Chloe burst into another round of tears. She was so sad even her wolf shared in her sadness and no matter how much she consoled herself, she knew the love of her life was gone. Seconds slowly metamorphosed to minutes and minutes to hours and as time rolled on, slowly, a vile thought crept into her head. Revenge. With a blurry vision, Chloe studied her dormitory. The walls which she'd had a verbal brawl with Trisha on till they were hugged with pink wallpapers was the least of her problems. The small and lovely chandelier made of glass that hung from above, too, at that moment couldn't illuminate her of the dark urge to retaliate Trisha's behaviour with one that will affect her just as bad as she, Chloe, was affected. All she needed was an opening.Slowly, her gaze shifted and landed on the spot Trisha had ransacked before she and Wilkes suddenly left her alone to her misery.&lsquo
When the creature was gone, Trisha quickly dashed to where Wilkes was but on her arrival, she noticed that he was as good as though he'd never been hurt. He, Wilkes, saw the look of surprise in her eyes and grinned as he rested the back of his head against a tree, catching his breath.“Sometimes I forget it's nearly impossible for you to be hurt for a long time,” she said as she helped him up to his feet.“Trust me when I say that I forget, too.” Wilkes eyes shifted to the green world around him but landed on each of the three contestants who were separated from each other by a few metres. “I wonder why Harold and Penelope aren't awake already.”They both ran over to where Harold was and they realized that the damage done to him was far more than they'd imagined. More blood gushed out of the upper part of his right temple with a churning noise and his neck was visibly contorted.

It was the end of a session and although Harold and Wilkes especially had been to a rough start, things got a lot better after the contest and as they stood in their room, getting ready to go home for the holiday, for the first time since they had gotten to the school, they felt and behaved like other students.“Who is coming to take you home?” Harold asked Wilkes as he eyes lazily landed on the messy heap of cloth that were in his bag. There was no way he was going to take his time rearranging them. No, that was too much stress.“I'm not very sure,” Wilkes answered as his eyes scanned the room for any of his belongings he might have missed. The room was pretty empty compared to how it had been two hours ago. Even the bulb that shone a dark light had been taken from its socket. “I mean, it is either my aunt or her husband; my uncle, or them both.” He sighed as he looked back at his huge travelling bag that was on his bed. “I don't think it mat
For the first time since the new intakes had been in Golden Lake University, rain fell.It was on a Friday and most of the semester had gone. Things had gone back to normal or at least, almost had.Sarah returned back to her park after being told all what happened by Harold. She promised not to tell anyone anything but deep down, Harold knew it was only a matter of weeks - a month or two, if lucky - before she told someone all she had been told. All the same, they did tell her everything. She deserved to know the truth.Derek, too, was back to his old self: lively, goofy and weird and with him was the love of his life, Penelope, who acted like the perfect housewife who without doubt, she was going to be. She seemed content that way.Although Wilkes never and probably never will admit it, the couple - Derek and Penelope - made him jealous. One of the reasons he had been excited to resume in Golden
"What does this mean?" Wilkes asked as he, too, bent his neck over the sheet of paper.Harold read the words again. Just like in the first letter he had gotten, this, too, was warning him of something in the most confusing way possible."I don't know," he replied. "But I do know that this is from professor Ericson. He must have written it before he died. You know, expected us to search his room when he was gone.""That's unlikely," Wilkes said dryly. "It most likely is to someone who knows of its existence behind the clock and that person definitely isn't you - or me. Besides, how are you so certain it is from professor Ericson?""The handwriting. They're... similar. Don't you see it?""I don't. At all." He sighed then continued, "we'll compare the handwriting of this paper and the one from the letter we are certain he handed to you together when all of these is over.""Yes, seems l
Harold and Wilkes waited in professor Ericson's office, doing nothing. When the party were first in the cavern, their footsteps reached up above where Harold was but after roughly a minute, there was nothing to tell that those that had gone down there existed.“Do you have any reasons why you wanted is to come here?” Wilkes asked when it was just the both of them in (Late) professor Ericson's office. Harold almost always had a plan. He knew that.Harold looked around the room like it was his first time being in it.“No,” he said. “I just wanted us to be here when they went down there.”Wilkes looked puzzled. That didn't seem like Harold.“But now that we're here,” Harold continued, oblivious of Wilkes confusion, “why don't we just look around for whatever we can find.”He paused for a while and looked at Wilkes before continuing, “we never know what we might f
Derek woke up with a series of cough.Penelope sprung out of the bed she was sat in and went to his side.“Are you okay?” she asked, wrapping her fingers around his arm. He was a lot thinner than he had been in the past.He fell silent for some seconds, “yes, I am okay,” he said, “how're you, too?” he asked, putting his other hand on hers which were on his arm.“I've never felt more alive than I am feeling right now,” she said.Derek chuckled, “that's good.”By then, Brie was also by his side but watched the both of them silently. Trisha sat in the position Penelope was in before, fiddling with her phone.Derek sat up and opened his eyes. He looked to his left and saw Sarah on the bed with him then he turned to look at Penelope, then Brie.“Thank you…” he said to Brie. “…for everything.” There was a short pause. “When you saw us down the
Trisha paced from left to right of Harold and Wilkes small room. It was either she was no longer aware of the presence of Brie and Penelope or she just wasn't bothered by their presence. The latter seemed the most feasible option."I'll have to call my dad this very moment," she said to no one in particular. She seemed to be talking to herself and the next second, her phone was in her hand, placing a call to reach her father. She brought the phone to her ear and waited. After what seemed like ages to the two females watching her, she breath in and out deeply, and began to speak."Hello, father," she started. There was a pause from her side because her father was talking. It went on and on and on but Trisha understood why. He hadn't spoken to his daughter in over a week and was worried something awful must have happened to her."Why didn't you pick your calls?" he asked. His voice was a lot louder than befo
Harold and Wilkes picked up pace as they ran back to Dr. Alvin Clarks's office. Their sneakers marched on the tuffs of grass and on the cemented pavement, too, but they didn't bother as they huffed and puffed. The breeze as they moved blew against their faces but that, too, didn't stop them. They had to get to Dr. Clark before he and the others left. When they got to the entrance of the building, they stopped running and walked in.The receptionist recognised them and gave them a small nod telling them to proceed with the reason they were there. The both of them acknowledged her nod and went to the elevator. They got in it and a few seconds later, they were on the top floor. They both walked down the absolutely beautiful but empty and very silent corridor slowly. They loved as their sneakers sunk into the red carpet the spread everywhere. They turned right and continued walking.“Do you think
Brie closed the door behind her with her leg. It made a loud snap that caused Derek to let out a soft moan as the sound wave caused his eardrum to tremble. She had the pizza box Penelope had asked for in her hand.“I didn't know which ones you like over the other so I went with good old Pepperoni.”Penelope's nose wiggled like a mouse's. “It isn't my favourite,” she started, “but isn't my worst either. Thank you,” she said as she got the box out of Brie's hands. She put it on the bed and walked to Derek' side. She knelt beside his bed but Brie peered down on him from above.“He's conscious already,” Penelope said, sounding like a small child who had just gotten a gift. She was talking to Brie.“Oh, has he?” Brie said, kneeling, too. “I can't handle it much any longer.”“Handle what?” Penelope asked, looking to her right, at Brie.“His sister, she has been dead worri
