_Ryker's POV_

I woke up to the sound of laughter, and it was like nails on a chalkboard. The sound was so irritating it grated on my nerves. I willed the sound to disappear, but it just continued. I opened my eyes with a start, ready to lash out at whoever was disturbing my peace and Arianna's, when my eyes landed on a little girl on the second bed in the room.

She had a cast on her hand, and on the other hand, she was holding an iPad and giggling at something.

“What the fuck?” I cussed loudly, and the two other adults in the room, her parents, let out loud gasps at the offensive word.

But their eyes widened in surprise when they recognized me, and they bared their necks in submission.

"Alpha, my apologies," her mother said quickly, her eyes wide with fear. "My daughter didn't mean to disturb you."

But I wasn't having it. I glared at the little girl, who burst out in giggles and told her parents to scold me because I had just said a bad word.

"Mommy, Mommy, he said a bad word!" she e

_Ryker's POV_As I sat there, my thoughts kept drifting back to and hovering around the birthmark. I kept staring at it, kept touching it. Could it be her? I reasoned, and the more I thought about it, the louder my heart beat in my chest.I shook my head, not wanting to think too much about it when I would find out shortly. My private investigator was the best in the game and could dig up anything about anyone in a matter of minutes.Instead, I focused my attention on Arianna again, wondering when she would wake up. She wasn’t even moving or anything, and that scared me. The only proof of life in her was her chest rising and falling slightly, but I still placed my finger under her nose to occasionally confirm it. I couldn’t be too sure. She looked too still and that scared the crap out of me.As I sat there staring at Arianna, I felt someone else staring at me. I looked up with a deep scowl, and the little girl snapped her eyes shut, pretending to be sleeping. I didn’t even know wheth

_Ryker's POV_I made a beeline for the restaurant, shoving people out of my way as I did. When I reached Jason, I slapped some hundred dollar bills on the table, not even bothering to count them. "Jason, I have to go," I said hastily.Jason looked up at me, his brows knitted in surprise as he looked around probably to see what was chasing me. "What's going on, Ryker? You look like you've seen a ghost."I didn't have time to explain. I just shook my head and told him, "Take care of Arianna, I'll be back shortly."Jason's eyes widened in alarm. "Ryker, what's happening? You're scaring me."I didn't respond. I just turned to him and asked with my hands stretched out. "Give me your keys."Jason hesitated for a moment like he was weighing whether his car was safe with me in my current state or not. But he eventually pulled it out and I yanked it from him. "Ryker, what's going on?" he asked again, his voice laced with worry.I just flipped him off and rushed out of the restaurant, leaving J

_Ryker's POV_I drove quickly to the hospital, my heart racing with every mile I covered. I couldn’t believe it. She was right there. Right under my nose, literally, and I never say it.When I finally arrived at the hospital, I rushed out of the car and sprinted towards the entrance. I burst through the doors, my eyes scanning the hallway as I covered the distance to Arianna's room in long strides..As I entered the room, the little girl perked up and waved at me, a shy smile on her face. I scowled in return, and her smile slipped off her face. For a moment, I had totally forgotten about her.I ignored her and walked deeper into the room, my eyes fixed on Arianna. She lay motionless on the bed, her chest rising and falling with each breath. I felt my heart clench, and I had to swallow hard to keep my emotions in check.Jason was standing in the corner, his eyes fixed on me. I nodded at him, my voice barely above a whisper. "Thanks for watching her, Jason. I owe you one."Jason nodded

I slowly opened my eyes, groggily taking in my surroundings. I didn't know where I was. All I knew was that I was on the ground. I could tell that much from how hard the surface was. I didn't know how I found myself there or even what I was doing there. I felt pain all over, like I had been in one cramped position for an unhealthy amount of time.As I struggled to sit up, the sun pierced my eyes painfully. I winced at the pain and struggled to cover my eyes. I blinked a few times to get used to the bright beams, and when I eventually did, I looked around and was shocked to find out where I was. I was in an open field, and that was all I could see for miles. No buildings, no animals, no humans. It was like I was just between the earth and the sky.I stood up shakily, trying to remember how I had gotten there. But no matter how hard I stressed my brain, I kept drawing a blank. I didn't even know where to start from. I tried to call for help, but all I got was the sound of my voice echoi

I stared at the doctor, my eyes wide with shock. "An accident?" I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. "A coma?" How? How was that even possible? One minute I was shopping for groceries with Claire and the next minute, they were saying I had been in a coma, not for one, but for three whole days?!How on earth was that even possible? I didn’t want to believe it, but as the scent of antiseptic kept hitting my nostrils, I was filled with dread at the realization it might not be so far from the truth. The doctor nodded slowly. "Yes, Miss Arianna. You've been in an accident, and you've been in a coma for three days." He spoke slowly, enunciating each word as if he feared I might mishear.I felt like I had been punched in the gut. The air seemed to have been sucked out of my lungs, leaving me gasping for breath. I didn't remember anything. And even when I tried to remember, all I heard was a loud screeching sound that seemed to pierce through my brain. I rubbed my temples, trying to

Ryker looked like he had more to say, but decided against it. He took one last glance at me, his eyes lingering on my face before he turned and walked away. I watched him go, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside me. I was relieved that he was gone, but at the same time, I couldn't shake off the feeling that he had been trying to tell me something important.I couldn’t understand why he was acting the way he was doing. Why he was acting like he hadn’t been avoiding me for days up until now.His shoulders slumped in defeat as he walked away and I couldn’t help but think something had changed with him. I could see it in his eye, but I couldn’t tell what that was.As soon as Ryker disappeared from view, I let out a shaky breath and felt a wave of tears wash over me. I heard it before I felt it.The crack of the whip echoed through the backyard, slicing into the silence. I felt the sting of the lash on my back next, the searing pain licking me up like wildfire as I crumpled to the grass. My vision blurred, and for a moment, I saw stars dancing before my eyes. There was a bloodcurdling scream, and it took me a few seconds to realize it had come from my throat."No, Derrick, please! She’s just a child," my mother's voice pleaded as tears streamed down her cheeks. Her words were filled with raw fear, a fear that had become all too familiar in our household.I heard the sound of heavy footsteps as Derrick approached me. His breath reeked of cheap liquor and cigarettes, the stench making my stomach churn with nausea. "You're nothing but a worthless, wolf-less abomination," he spat, his words dripping with venom. His eyes gleamed with sadistic pleasure, his face twisted in a snarl. My mother's cries grew louder, but I knew she was powerless, just like m

  • Offered to the Cursed Alpha   Chapter 2

I woke up to the sound of the pig pen door creaking open, and the sunlight that streamed in, momentarily blinded me. A maid stood in the entrance, her lips set in a thin line and her eyes filled with disgust. "Get out," she spat. "You're needed in the house."I stumbled to my feet, my body aching like I was doused in kerosene and lit up in flames. The maid didn't offer to help me, didn't even look at me with a hint of compassion. I was nothing to her, just a worthless mutt.I made my way to the bathroom, my legs trembling beneath me. The warm water of the bath trickled down my body and red water swirled around the floor before disappearing into the drain. I watched it go from red to pink till everything ran clear. I soaked for what felt like hours, trying to wash away the pain and dirt that clung to me.As I bathed, I couldn't help but think of my mother. Where was she? What was she doing? Was she okay? The thought of her with Derrick made my empty stomach churn. Finally, I emerged fr

_Ryker's POV_Jason raised his hands in mock surrender, but he maintained that stupid look on his face that made me want to wipe it right off him. I glared at him, my eyes narrowing into slits. "Just drop it, Jason," I warned him, my voice dropping to a low growl. But Jason being Jason, just chuckled and leaned back in his chair. "I'm just saying, Ryker. You're not as oblivious as you think you are."I snarled, baring my teeth. "I'm not oblivious, Jason. I just don't have feelings for anyone, okay?"Jason flipped me the bird and brought his cup of…green tea? to his lips. "Save it, Ryker. I know you better than that."I sighed, rubbing my temples. This conversation was giving me a headache. A terrible one. "Can we just drop it, Jason? Please?""Fine, but just remember, I'm here for you, no matter what,” he said, and despite the amusement in his eyes, I knew he meant it.But he wasn’t about to get sappy on me, so it was my turn to flip him off, making him laugh. _Ryker's POV_I looked up to see Jason standing in front of me, his eyes fixed on me, concern and relief crossing his features. Then looked at me, really looked at me, and his steps faltered. He was probably taken aback by my overall look, and for a moment, he just stared at me. Then, he rushed to my side, eyeing me up from head to toe.“What are you doing here?” I asked begrudgingly because I knew there went my quiet time."Ryker, what's going on?" he asked his eyes searching my body for any sign of hurt, and I slapped his hand away when he touched my face. "I was at your house, but they told me you ran out to the hospital, so I had to come as soon as possible. Are you hurt?”I didn't respond, because it was a dumb question and also because I didn’t have strength to, so I just kept staring at Arianna through the glass window. Jason dramatically followed my line of sight, and his eyes widened in shock."Is that...Arianna?" he asked loudly, and I resisted the urge to punch him in the
