Chapter 10

Author: A Thousand Reliefs

Sally’s hands shook as she gripped the handle on the wheelchair.

After hearing Elijah’s words, she suddenly recalled that not a single servant had spoken to them the moment they stepped into the Moses family house.

Under the moonlight, she looked at Elijah’s chiseled face and pitied him.

His elder cousin, Wendell, continued to berate Elijah for being a disabled person and sexually harassed Elijah’s wife before him.

His uncle and aunt were sarcastic and spiteful to him. They had never looked him straight in the eye.

His grandfather…

Before this, Sally was convinced that his grandfather must have loved Elijah a lot. Otherwise, he would not have been concerned with something as important as his marriage.

Yet, just now in the family house, Grandpa’s cold indifference made Sally feel like Grandpa did not like Elijah that much.

Sally felt soured by the thought.

Elijah had lost his closest family members since young and his other relatives mistreated him. He must feel… unbearably painful in his heart, right?

Almost instinctively, Sally extended a slightly trembling hand to touch his icy cold hand.

The man’s hand twitched slightly.

Sally recollected herself immediately.

As though getting scalded, she retracted her hand immediately but firm words still escaped from her mouth. “From now on, I’ll be your family member. I’ll be your company.”

A hint of dumbfounded surprise flashed across Elijah’s exquisite facial features.

He turned around and looked at her with his brooding eyes, shrouded by a layer of silk.

Sally thought he did not hear her.

Thus, she repeated it in a serious tone. “Although you and I are just married… for a day,

“Through thick and thin; through sickness and health, I’ll follow you. I’m not like them.

“Even if you truly are a jinx. I’m not afraid. I’ll be at your side always.”

He let out an almost inaudible chuckle. “Come here.”

Sally listened to him and went over. He scooped her into his embrace.

Elijah’s breath gently blew across her neck, triggering a ticklish sense that caused her heart to beat wildly.

Holding her with one hand, his other hand gently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Are you sure you’re not afraid?”

Moonlight shrouded them in a mist of pale white.

Locked in an embrace by Elijah in the wheelchair, Sally felt her heart beating frantically for no reason.

Under the moonlight, the side of the face that belonged to the man with a black silk ribbon over his eyes was filled with a sense of suppressed passion. He was both dangerous and captivating.

Sally’s face started to burn hot in embarrassment.

Such a handsome and attractive man became her legitimate husband yesterday.

Was that not a blessing to her?

The woman’s blushing face was beguilingly adorable under the moonlight.

Elijah repeated his question huskily. “You’re not scared of being with me?”

Despite being a line taken from a typical crime film, it was heavily tinted with a sense of bleakness when uttered by him. Sally’s heart ached for him.

Resolved, Sally nodded her head with a pair of innocent, beaming eyes. “I’m not scared.”

He might have lost three fiancees, but she had married him without a hitch.

That had just proven how lucky she was!

Elijah stared at her pure eyes that were free of the blemishes of the world and heaved a small sigh. “Silly girl.”

Before Sally could figure out whether the phrase was meant as a compliment or an insult, a figure rushed out from the Moses family house.

“Elijah Moses!”

With an ashen face, Wendell rushed over angrily.

His hair was a mess and his suit hung crooked on his body. There was even a swollen mark of a slap on his face.

He kicked Elijah’s wheelchair hard. “You usually keep so much to yourself that you won’t even let out a single fart. Yet, how dare you taunt me at such a critical moment?!”

“I should’ve known you’re up to something!”

“You’ve egged me on to fight with the Greene family. Now, they’ve made it into a bigger deal. For the sake of his reputation, Grandfather has withdrawn the company he just gave me!”

“Stupid blind bastard, you did this to me!”

Elijah let out a little laugh. With a cold tone, he said, “If you already knew I mean harm, why did you fall for it still?”

“Unless you only figured out that you weren’t supposed to go against the Greenes after getting beaten up due to your stupidity?”

Elijah’s voice was the embodiment of glacial spite. There was no way the hot-headed Wendell could have swallowed Elijah’s insults.

Wendell landed two more kicks. Elijah’s wheelchair started to tip. It seemed like it was about to topple over.

Wendell expected the kicks to send Elijah the Cripple upside down.

Much to his surprise, a pair of petite hands grabbed hold of the wheelchair as it was about to topple over.

Sally straightened Elijah’s wheelchair and glared at Wendell. “I won’t let you bully my hubby!”

“...” Wendell was speechless.

The anger in Sally’s eyes confused Wendell so much he thought he was imagining things.

This little lady appeared weak and gentle before. She did not even dare to say anything when he pinched her butt. Now, she was glaring and yelling at him?

Wendell chuckled coldly. He extended a hand to tickle her chin frivolously. “What? Trying to defend your crippled husband, eh?”

“Don’t forget, you should be worried about yourself.”

Upon saying that, he burst out in an evil laugh. “Aren’t you afraid… that I’ll f*ck you in front of your crippled husband?”

Initially, he thought that a woman who would not voice out after he molested her would not have much strength for a fight anyway.

Yet, he was wrong.

Sally gritted her teeth and took off her seven-centimeters high heels immediately. Before he knew it, she whacked the heels straight into Wendell’s face. “Isn’t it enough for you to bully me, and now you want to bully my hubby?!”

“Do you really believe my hubby has no family? I’m telling you, I’ll protect my hubby myself from now on!”

Wendell was in a daze being whacked by both of Sally’s high heels.

By the time he regained his senses, Sally had already pushed Elijah’s wheelchair and fled barefoot away. They quickly disappeared at the end of the flower gallery.

Wendell wiped his face and smelled the rusty sweetness of blood.

He cursed internally. Wendell was about to give chase when Daniel yelled behind him, “Come back! You’ve embarrassed yourself enough!”

“But Father, Elijah did this to me!”

“It’s your fault for getting caught red-handed!”

Daniel glared at Wendell. “Stop this nonsense!

“Grandfather is still angry. If Elijah reports you to the old man, it’ll become more difficult for you to get money from him!”

Wendell sneered contemptuously. “I don’t see Grandfather liking Elijah. After all, he chucked him outside for so many years. Now, he arranged for Elijah to marry a country bumpkin. Isn’t it obvious that he has no plans for Elijah to inherit anything?!”

Daniel laughed coldly from afar. “If it wasn’t for me taking care of his three previous fiancees, do you think Elijah would have ended up with a bumpkin now?”

Wendell was stunned. “His three late fiancees…”

“I did it.”

In the darkness, Daniel lit up a cigarette and started smoking. “Don’t you dare think that you’re free of worries now. That jinx is your grandfather’s favorite alright.”

Pushing Elijah’s wheelchair, Sally ran frantically along the road.

The complex and winding paths in the flower gallery opened itself up into a smooth path in their haste.

She ran on and on while pushing Elijah until they reached the side of the road.

After confirming that Wendell was not at their tails, she crouched down and leaned against the side of the wheelchair to catch her breath.

She could not remember when was the last time she experienced something this nerve-wracking.

“Thank you.”

Still stead in the wheelchair, the man clad in a black shirt fished out a bottle of mineral water from the side of the wheelchair and passed it to her.

Sally took the bottled water, twisted the cap open, and gulped a few mouthfuls of water. She felt relief all over her body.

She lifted her gaze to look at him as she wiped her sweat. “I ran too quickly just now. I didn’t shake you too much, did I?”

In the wheelchair, the man responded with a light laugh. “You nearly smashed my behind into pieces.”

Sally froze. Her voice became timid. “Re... really?”

“Why don’t you check it out?”

Under the pale moonlight, the man's smile was gentle yet alluring. Sally pressed her lips. Her cheeks were hot. "Examine your…" "After we get home." She panted heavily. "Actually, I was only pretending to be tough earlier… "He's so strong. I definitely won't be able to beat him. I can't stop him from bullying you either." She lowered her head, and her gaze fell on her bare feet. "But… I can run away with you. "I think I can run pretty fast." He tried hard not to smile when looking at her serious face. "Are you planning to run away with me every time?" "Mm." She nodded. After that, she seemed to have thought of something and shook his head. "I won't always be running away though. When I become stronger, I can protect you." Elijah looked at her face under the moonlight. He smiled. "Alright, I'll wait for you to be stronger." "Mm!" She tightly clenched her fists. Her face was blushing red. She lifted her hands and patted her face, then she looked at the pitch-black

The black Maserati traversed the city streets and finally stopped in front of the self-study block in A City University. Sally got out of Ol' Joe's car. She ran toward the public study room without saying thank you to Ol' Joe. She left more than her notes and study material in the study room. There were also all sorts of awards and certificates that she won, and the cards that her grandmother sent her every birthday. Those birthday cards were crudely made and her grandmother's handwriting was ugly. Other people might think that they were waste paper. However, those were Sally's most treasured possessions! The self-study block was crowded that morning. The elevator lobby was packed. Just as she was waiting for the elevator, Evonne gave her another call. "Are you here yet, Sal? Those people are going crazy!" Sally could hear that Evonne was about to cry. Her chest tightened. Sally took a deep breath. There was no use waiting for the elevator. She turned and ran toward

"That's correct, theoretically." Wendell tried hard to hold back his urge to mock Sally. "If you obediently take off my shirt and give me a kiss, maybe I'll lose interest in you." A hint of cunning flashed in Sally's eyes. However, she nodded earnestly. "Alright, I'll listen to everything you say." Wendell could not hold it back anymore. While laughing, he waved at the two men in black who were holding her down. "Let her go!" He wanted to see how silly this country girl was! The men in black did as they were told. "You're not going to pull any tricks, right?" Wendell said with a smile as Sally walked close to him. "There are three of you. What can I possibly do?" Sally smiled earnestly and walked up next to him. "This is what you said. I'll take off your shirt and give you a kiss. "Keep your hands away from me." Sally tried to hold back her disgust. She pushed away his hands that were gripping her body, and slowly undid the buttons on his shirt. One button, tw

Evonne did not finish that sentence. She could sense that Elijah behind them was emanating an ominous aura. Evonne bit her lip, softly said goodbye to Sally, and left the scene. Elijah did not say anything on the journey back from the university to the mansion. Sally tried to say something several times but did not know what to say. She kept quiet. Once they were back at the mansion, Sally went to her desk and tried to combine the tattered pieces of her certificates. That was not a difficult task to perform. However, the album that contained the photographs and birthday cards from her grandmother had been thrown in the fiery brazier. It would be impossible to restore everything. Sally sat at her desk. Her heart ached as she looked at the half-charred album. She cursed Wendell Moses to hell countless times. After she had cursed enough, she prepared to keep the album away when a card fell out. She bent down to pick it up and discovered that the card held something bet

Somebody must have specifically instructed the butler to use excessive force on Sally. Anyone could have seen that. The butler's hand froze in the air when Elijah said that. A while later, he put his whip down. "I obey the Sire." Lucille rolled his eyes. "We are enforcing discipline on this degenerate, lustful woman. It's not your place to say anything, you blind, uneducated orphan!" Elijah had always kept his mouth shut in similar situations. Lucille was not happy at his sudden interjection. "All of you are bullying my wife. Of course I have to say something," Elijah said softly. Sally could hear from his tone of voice that, just like what he told her, he did not have any position or authority in the Moses family. They treated him as though he was a nobody. "You've married a wh*re, yet you act as though she's someone precious." Lucille grunted and turned to look at Grandpa Moses. "Father, we'll have to teach this Sally girl a lesson. Otherwise, she won't learn. "Howe

It was already morning when Sally woke up. She moved slightly and felt the searing pain on her back, which jolted her awake. She realized that Elijah was sleeping next to her on the same hospital bed. The bed was for one person, which made it quite the squeeze for both of them. He hugged her tightly, and their bodies clung together in a tight embrace. They were so close that she could hear his heartbeat. Thump. Thump. Thump. His heart was beating at the same strength and frequency as hers. The corners of her lips subconsciously curled upward. That was the first time someone had hugged her to sleep and the first time that she lay close enough to someone else to hear their heartbeat. She lifted her eyes to look at Elijah's face. His side profile was clean and handsome. His thin eyebrows were of the perfect length and thickness, and his eyelashes were long and neat. The curvature of his lips was perfect, and his collarbones were seductively tempting. His eyes were espe

Ol' Joe got out of the car quickly, set up the wheelchair, and carried Elijah onto the wheelchair. "Let's go." The man in the wheelchair smiled at her. "You lead the way." Sally led the way into the hospital. She was not quite sure how she should feel. They silently walked past the lobby. When they got into the elevator, Sally could not contain her curiosity anymore and turned to look at Elijah. "Grandpa Moses said that you're not fond of crowds and you don't like talking to strangers. Why do you insist on visiting my Grandma this time?" Before she met him, she had a hunch that the man was unemotional. Now that they met, she discovered that not only he was unemotional, but also aloof. He was not someone who would want to gossip with her extended family. "Because I'm curious." "What are you curious about?" The men turned his head and looked at her petite figure through the silk ribbon. "I wonder what's your family like, to raise a silly little girl like you." Sal

Elijah glared at them coldly. "I can forgive your transgressions today, because of Sally and her Grandma who's still in the resuscitation room. I won't be as kind the next time you decide to run your mouth." Sylvia grimaced in pain as Ol' Joe pinned her arm behind her. She gritted her teeth resentfully when she heard Elijah say that. However, Sharon stopped her before she could say anything. Sharon was a few years older than Sylvia and was more sensible. She could see that the clothes on Elijah's body and the black silk ribbon over his face were made of high-quality material. She could see from his noble demeanor that the man was an extraordinary individual. His words confirmed her guess. She pulled Sylvia back and gently shook her head. "I remember that Sylvia and I have something urgent to attend. We'll be leaving first!" Before Shawn could say anything, she dragged Sylvia and quickly left. "Sorry for the embarrassing scene, Mr. Moses." Shawn smiled sheepishly after

————One year later. The wedding of Zoey Williams, president of Yoder Corporation, and Thomas Yoder, the young master of the Moses family, was held at A City’s grandest hotel. On the wedding day, Zoey wore a gorgeous wedding gown as she walked over to Thomas. She raised her head and smiled at him. “When I was a kid, Freya always said that I would have to marry her brother when I grew up.” “However, I realized that I did not like Elijah. I much preferred Sis Sally.” “Who would have thought that at the end of the day, I would still end up marrying Freya’s younger brother. As per her wishes, I’ll be taking care of her brother forever, and allowing her brother to care for me for the rest of my life.” Thomas smiled as he pulled her into his arms. “My beloved ZZ, I finally get to marry you.” Freya, carrying Frigg and sitting with the rest of the family, turned to exchange smiles with Bennett. The wedding was joyful and romantic. Everyone attending basked in the loving atmosp

I’ve enjoyed many years of lavish treatment at the lavish family, but I was discarded unceremoniously into the dust!” “Sally Summers, it’s all your fault! Everything is because of you!” “I won’t forgive you even if I become a ghost!” “Alright then, go be a ghost!” Elijah narrowed his eyes and raised a hand to grip Queenie’s chin. The hatred in his eyes caused Queenie to smile. “Elijah Moses, choke me to death if you have the guts to do so!” “If you can’t choke me to death, I have multiple ways to make life miserable for you!” “Your sister is just one part of my plan!” “You probably don’t know this yet.” Her lips curled upwards into a bloodthir

It’s only normal that a half-dead person would not have a great memory.” “Forgive me for being blunt, Mrs. Lucca. President Lucca told me that you don’t have many days left.” “When you’re gone, he’s going to leave his daughter and marry me.” The woman lying in bed turned pale as she shook her head and said, “Impossible… That’s impossible…” “Quincy, he…” “Nothing is impossible.” Queenie continued smiling a gleeful and flaunting smile. “In your dreams!” Quincy gritted his teeth together tightly. “I wouldn’t want you even if every other woman on the planet was dead!” The woman on the other end of the line laughed lightly. “You’re going to abandon your child because Freya Moses is dead?” “You planted your seed in my stomach.” Quincy gritted his teeth and was about to continue arguing when Elijah gave him a look. Quincy pursed his lips. “So, what do you want?” “Let’s meet up.” Queenie yawned. “Can you pick a place?” “There’s a cafe nearby the hospital.” Quincy sighed. “I don’t have much time for you, so don’t try talking nonsense after we meet.”“What a man you are, trying to ghost someone after you’ve slept with them.” The woman shrugged nonchalantly. “Alright. You can wait for me. I’ll be there soon.” She hung up. Quincy pursed his lips and looked up at Elijah. “Why do you want me to meet her?” “You’ve got to have some bait if you want to trap someone.” “This time, Quincy, you’re the bait.

The sharp end of the knife sank into Quincy’s skin. Intense pain came, but he did not seem to feel a thing as he continued pushing. Suddenly, a large, strong, and dry hand took hold of him. Quincy frowned as he tried to continue forcing the knife in, but he could not exert any more strength. Elijah’s cold voice rang beside his ear. “Do you feel like my sister will live on for much longer if you die before her eyes?” “Have you ever thought about how much she likes you and how important you are to her?” Stunned, Quincy turned instinctively to look at Freya. The woman was sobbing controllably. As she gazed tearfully at him, it seemed that she had multiple things she wanted to say but could not find the words. Tears flowed once more from Quincy’s eyes. Ignoring the blood flowing from his chest, he dashed over to Freya and held her tightly. “It’s my fault.” “It’s all my fault!” “Freya… I can’t live without you.” “I cannot… I…” Freya could not stop herself from wr

After Freya was hospitalized, Quincy canceled all his work plans and spent all his time in the hospital watching over her. He stood guard there stubbornly, and no one could talk any sense into him. Both Elijah and Thomas could not bring themselves to chide or drive Quincy away when he acted this way. And thus, Freya finally agreed to meet him on the seventh day. The woman’s face in the ward was pale, and she was considerably thinner than from before hospitalization. She looked extremely haggard. Tears welled in Quincy’s eyes when he saw what his beloved looked like from a close distance. It was all his fault. It was all his fault! He had caused her to end up this way! All because of him!“Is there anything you would like to say?” Freya leaned against her pillows. Eyes shut, she seemed to have

Sally’s lips pursed themselves together when Freya’s name was mentioned. She would admit that she had had a horrible first impression of Freya when they first met. The woman had stripped nearly twenty years of Zoey’s life away from her. Even now, Zoey still bore the scars she had inflicted upon her on her face. And she had even attacked Sally’s mother during her and Elijah’s wedding. However, times had changed, and five years had passed since then. Sally could not bring herself to be cruel toward Freya, who now showed complete remorse. Additionally, she had treated Sam and Little Sarah with genuine kindness lately. Sally had begun to think of her as family. Yet, now, something like this happened. She sighed. “Freya…” “Freya will not be in great condition when she regains consciousness. You need to prepare yourself mentally.” Freya’s illness was in her heart. The sort of illness she had made it so that she could not be made angry, excited, or frantic. If not, not e
