Chapter 12

"Carson! Now in my study!" The house echoed with the sound of Mr. MacPherson's words.

Carson's heart was beating fast as he walked to his dad's study. He felt like his shoes were full of lead because every step was heavy. His nerves made his hands white as he knocked on the big wooden door.

"Come in," his dad told him.

He stepped into the room,it had the smell of old books and his dad's favorite smokes. Two people named Mr. and Mrs. MacPherson were sitting behind a big desk. They looked serious, like judges who are about to make a decision.

"Sit down, son," Mr. MacPherson told him, showing him a chair.

Carson sat there, feeling small in front of his parents. The tight quiet was broken by the chair's creak.

"Carson," his worried father said first, "we need to talk about the business." and your plans for the future."

Carson felt sick to his stomach. "What's wrong, Father?"
