It was another thirty minutes before the carriage rolled to a stop. By then, Cole had successfully kept his emotions at bay and was now staring down at Emily with cold, emotionless eyes.
He considered waking her but was saved from doing so when she pried her eyes open and looked at him through sleepy eyes. Emily noticed her hair had fallen from its coiffure and gasped, then she hurriedly started to wand it back upon her head, securing it with her a great many pins.
It was a beautiful sight. Cole watched her and frowned. He wanted to reach out and snatch her hand out and let the hair fall once again. Instead, he opened his mouth and spoke dispassionately, “'Tis good to know you have finally woken up.”
“Oh,” she said. Tilting her head slightly but continued with what she was doing. “Have you been waiting long? You could have woken me,” she supplied.
Ignoring her, he
IT WASN'T THE EARLY morning sun streaming into the room through the gap in the cream coloured curtain that awoke Cole Fletcher. Rather, it was the warm sizzling feeling down his loins that did.Cole opened his eyes and the first thing he noticed was the scantily clad bottom of his wife, pressed to his thigh. Cole groaned at the sight of that. No wonder he had been feeling that bolt of warmth in his sleep, thinking he was in the arms of his mistress and his face buried in her breast only for him to wake up and discover the feeling of lust had been elicited by his conniving wife, and she wasn't even aware!A dark ferocious look crept up his face as he felt her stir restlessly in her sleep, trying to find a better position, jutting her derrière to his laps. Cole's groin reacted to that.Emily was a terrible sleeper. Concluded he.He wanted to entangle himself from her but realized there was no wa
“What — do you think you are doing." The words were slow but there was no mistaking the angry tone underlying it.Emily's heart thudded, and she feared for herself. “Unhand me at once.” She croaked out from suddenly dry lips. Her words only made his grip tighten more on her wrist, and he pulled her closer. “I don't think you understand me?” he said and asked one more time. “What do you think you are doing?”For several seconds the words hung in the air. Emily opened her mouth and then closed it. Her face was hot with embarrassment. What do you tell a man who is supposed to be your husband but despises you? What do you tell such a man when he catches you trying to touch him? Merciful Lord, she was in trouble.Staring at the trembling woman before him, Cole scowled. He had been trying his most damn to pretend he was sleeping, all the while controlling his raging arousal, while she had been busy trying to touch him
It was a hard fit for Cole to keep his face indifferent as he soundlessly slipped out the bed. Padding the floors of the room in bare feet. His hands clenched by his side. He must have been stupid to think he could arouse Emily without being affected, Cole thought with a bitter smile. Gritting his teeth, he cursed silently. Hoping Emily wouldn't have any need to look at him and notice the force of his arousal, pushing through the seams of his breeches as he made his way to where he had deposited all his clothes last night.Reaching under the chair, Cole roughly snatched his boots from there and wore it. The way he did it, one might think the poor thing had offended him. He did the same with his shirt, snatching it from the back of the chair. It's a wonder it did not snap into two. There was one word for what Cole was feeling at that time and that was frustration. Even though he dare not name it for what it was. Hurriedly Cole stepped out of th
Emily let out an exasperated breath as she felt the sudden urge to haul something at him. Anything. So long as it can land squarely on his head. Her hand itched to do just that. The nerve of the man to drop her in an unfamiliar ground and threaten to leave. He even acted like it was nothing out of character! And here she was thinking they could settle into an amicable marriage once he had had time to vent his anger.Only if she had known it would result into something like this, she would have strongly protested. Rolled on the floor, if need be, cried until someone at least believed her. Wasn't this the same as being a lonely old maid? The only difference was that she was married, but she will still be living the life of an old maid!Exasperated, Emily folded her hands under her breast and best a steady staccato with her fancy slippers. “I demand to go wherever it is you are going, so step aside, so I can step inside the carriage and do tell the foo
London, England.August, 1832IT HAS BEEN exactly one year since the Earl of Tonfield left his wife at the foot of Blakewood Manor. One might think the time spent apart might have softened his stance on the whole event, but no. There was still some lingering resentment. During that time, the earl had focused on his estate, stables, and all other things, deliberately putting his wife aside. Out of sight, out of mind, and he had been successful until now.Cole Fletcher grabbed his quizzing glass from his drawer and held it over the paper before him. The lights from the candles emitting a low brilliant glow on the ink-stained paper. Against his better judgement, he felt himself smile, as his eyes came to rest on the outrageous price scribbled neatly on the top to bottom of the bill. Cole traced the sum with his finger and laughed out loud. A smile stealing the curve of his lips to one side.
Leicestershire, England.1832.THE EAST WING drawing room at Tonfield hall was filled with fifteen house guests with more expected to arrive as the day goes by, delayed by either one thing or the other. Emily looked around the clusters of people, the one's standing by the door, the one's seated near the window, on a couch with a gilded scroll end, and the one's trying their hand at a game and smiled. There was a reason she had picked every single one of these guests and sent out an invitation to them. Alexander St. Clair, Earl of Romley was a lover of horses, and if his insistent questions do not bother Cole, then she doesn't know what will. Robert Parsons, Marquess of Bewford was chosen because he had twin sisters. If there was ever any form of mischievousness, she expects it would be those two to start it.Duncan Blackmore, The Marquess of Penslow because he had been pesteri
THE DINING ROOM at Tonfield hall, like every other thing in the house, reflected wealth and elegance. A testament to the fact the earl was worth forty-five thousand pounds a year. The room which was draped in red velvet, marble, and gold was illuminated by a chandelier, hanging over their heads like a blanket of light, creating a soft warm glow on the dining table and all other places forgotten by the candelabra.Cutleries clinked and clanged on simple ceramics as quiet conversions filled the room. The guests helping themselves to different assorted foods placed in front of them and those that weren't within reach were passed around by the footmen. However, sitting at the foot of the long table was lord Tonfield. His long slim fingers holding a pair of silverware in a death grip, wishing it was someone's wrist. Rows of even white teeth clenched tightly behind pursed lips. The Earl was beyond angry, and he knew that. With the way things were progressing, he wasn't even
COLE CURSED FURIOUSLY under his breath, turned, and marched towards Emily at a pace that almost made her drop her comb and bolt from her chair. Instead, she made herself sit there calmly and await him. The occasional quiver of her hand as she brushed her hair her only sign of agitation. In two or three quick strides Cole got to her side and before she knew it he grabbed hold of her chair and roughly turned her around in it. The screeching sound on the hard floor was the only form of protest as a surprised Emily could barely comprehend what was going on, let alone utter a single word. Cole snatched her comb from her hand and hurled it across the room before he leaned ever so slightly, holding her prisoner in her own chair. The poor comb crashed carelessly somewhere across the room before everything quietened down. Only then did Emily notice her own erratic breathing or the fact that there was no escape.“Just- what -do you think you are doing in my chamber?” Cole sn

Hoping to right his wrongs, Cole swung on top of his horse and reared the animal left, cursing himself for teaching her how to ride astride. He couldn't see her back, Emily had gained a measurable distance ahead of him and seems intent on keeping it. As he urged his stallion faster and faster, Cole looked around him, deciding which way to follow as it was clear he wouldn't meet up with her if they followed the same path.He will have to get to her in another way. If he continued in this path, he would lose sight of her.Swinging his horse around, Cole took another route. A shorter one. This time barely seeing the trees as he passed them in a flash. Looking ahead with firm determination.Several minutes later he appeared a good distance away from Tonfield hall and saw her fleeting form dart into the house. A flash of her yellow gown and that was all. Cole increased his pace, urging his bay stallion into a wicked gallop that soon brought him a stone t
Emily woke up the next morning with a little flutter in her stomach as she remembered the events of last night and how her husband had been so gentle with her, holding her in such a way that had cleared all her doubts, and had her believing he must have some deep feelings for her.At the point, she had wanted nothing more than to scream out she loved him, but at the last minute held herself back because she wanted it to be a surprise. She wanted it to be the first thing she would say to him in the morning, but as she turned to the side of the bed to do as she had planned in her mind, she discovered he was gone.Though aware he was going to Derbyshire, she still felt a trifle hurt he hadn't woken her up to tell her he was leaving. But as her eyes skidded to the vanity table, and she saw the single rose. Though no note was attached to it, it spoke volumes to her. He was trying to say something to her without words Just like that day he had given her a rose af
At their departure, Cole turned properly to his wife and held her chin, lifting her face. “What's all this about? Tell me, Emily,” he murmured and then held his breath, waiting, hoping she would say something, anything that she didn't want him to go. Or she would miss him, but he should have known not to expect much because she only shook her head and held the label of his coat tighter sniffling. Cole sighed.“Emily,” he murmured, his voice gentle and soft, trying to prompt her into talking to him, but to his surprise, she raised her head and looked up at him through shiny emerald eyes.“Don't ask,” She swiped her nose. “At least not today, please.” Her lower lips trembled, and she hugged his body, burying her head on his chest. “I just want you to hold me.”Cole was lost for words. He looked down at Emily and felt his heart tug. He knew she was still troubled about something and would want nothing more than to know what it was at l
Present Day.“Come, milady, we must get you ready in time.”Still hovering near the hearth where the maids had left her, Emily stared at the two chambermaids who had come to help her with her bath at the request of her husband and wondered why he would even bother. She hasn't had a lady's maid in a long while and had been bathing on her own, and he knew that. So why send up chambermaids to aid her. Why now?Lowering her lashes Emily affected a small smile and followed them to the tub, letting them fuss over her dispensing with her items.“Did he say why he — er — sent you people,” She mumbled as she lowered herself in the hot tub, sighing briefly as she felt the hot caress of the water. One maid went for her back, taking a cloth to wipe it clean while the other fussed with her hair.“He didn't say milady though I heard he went into town and ...” The girl trailed off and
It had been there before, this feeling, but she hadn't been able to see it like this. But now that she knew it was, it was as though with every passing moment it came knocking on her door, overpowering her. She felt this ridiculous need to blurt out her love for him. To say she loved him and hear the same from him, even when she knew that was impossible. Her husband might have taken her into his confidence, but there was nothing about the man that screamed his love. Sure, he was gentle and careful with her. He loved her company greatly, but did he love her? Will he ever love her? No, he must! He has to. Emily bit her lips, stopping the trembling in time.“Emily?”She raised her face, almost widening her eyes as she remembered he could still see her face as his eyes were yet to be tied. She lowered her face almost immediately. Her heart beating.“What's wrong?” The words floated in the air between them, concern
At once, he wrapped his hand around her, gently lifting her off the ground until her feet were dangling from his body and one arm came crushing her to his hard masculine body as he let her feet touch to the ground againAngling his head for a better kiss he kissed her thoroughly in a way that made Emily's breath catch in her throat, and she forgot everything and everyone except this man and what he was doing to her, the wonderful flutter in her stomach threatening to explode.Their harsh breath was out in the air. His hand moving over her body in a very accustomed way. Moving past the small of her back in a frenzied manner to her buttocks when it reached the back of her thigh, he hoisted her into his arms and dropped a kiss in the corner of her mouth. Moaning.Still not releasing her lips, he blindly fumbled his way around, revelling in the glory of her lips.Walking a little more in that state he lifted his h
The following weeks that camewerespent beautifully. From riding early in the morning to spending time in the garden and playing billiard of which Emily always won. She suspected Cole had something to do with it. He was awfully losing a lot. Pushing the wrong balls. It had to be that or nothing else.Meanwhile, Coleon the other handwas irrevocably and utterly happy. Never had he felt anything like this before. He was enjoying her company immensely. And at one point had told his workmen to take a day or two off, and that was after he had already asked them not to work in
IMMEDIATELY Cole left, Emily shot out of the bed and wore her night rail. She bit her lips and stared at the bed where they had made love last night. Blushed as she remembered how she had writhed under Cole, demanding him in every way possible. She remembered something else too as she moved closer to the bed. What he had said last night and even this morning. “You are mine.” Emily mouthed, savouring the words. Her brows furrowed as she wondered what it meant.Dare she hope?Climbing back to the bed, Emily wondered why she was embarrassed when she was getting everything she ever wanted. She didn't mind seeing Cole naked. No, she didn't think she minded seeing that broad chest, that well-toned stomach which flexed as he took in a deep breath and those powerful muscular thighs. No, she didn't think she minded. Her problem was with herself. How she couldn't keep her eyes away from him. Emily had a mind to tell him to take her again that morning bu
