A Spot near the fire was where Emily was working furiously through a kerchief with her needle. Her husband had been gone all morning, and she hadn't the faintest idea where he could be. After the shooting at the woods, he had taken to avoiding her. Waking up even before she thought to wake. And coming to bed only when he knew she was asleep. Emily frowned, worrying her lower lips, and thought of what her next to do because this right here wasn't working. She can't have him avoiding her as if she were a plague. “Good lord,” Emily cried as she pricked her finger. In her absent-mindless, she put the offending thing into her mouth, brought it out and continued her work, making sure not to drift off.
So far, all her previous plans had worked accordingly. Cole had taken her bait and giving her the most satisfying reactions. Reactions which still made her smile whenever she remembered them. Emily strived to irritate Cole, to annoy him. And if possible, to teach him a lesso
EMILY WISHED the ground would open and swallow her. She was dying of embarrassment and was half tempted to lie there on the ground and never get up again. But she made the courageous decision to stand up. Sitting on the ground, she dusted her body off dirt and leaves while trying to avert her eyes from her husband's naked torso. So far he hadn't said a word, and Emily was painfully aware of the silence which surrounded them.“Ahem.” He cleared his throat and her eyes flew to his face. His darkened perceptibly.“What the devil are you doing here, Emily?” He growled slowly. It was such a simple question, one little question that required such a simple answer, but somehow the answer got lodged in her throat. While she was still thinking of the perfect excuse to give. He extended his hand and helped her up. Instantly, Emily bent her head, pretending to dust off the dirt from her dress. Her way of avoiding his question.
SECONDS LATER, a young man arrived with a woman in tow. Emily didn't have to look twice to know who it was. 'Twas her brother Lucas. Behind her, she felt her husband stiffen. And that wasn't the only thing stiffened. She could feel the hard part of him pressing on her lower back. And because of their position and the state of their clothes. It felt as if it was on her naked back. Hot and firm, pushing at her skin. And it didn't help his hand was on her abdomen, trapped between her stomach and her thigh, which had been drawn up to her breast. Because she was sitting between his thigh. Emily felt all these things and more. Blushing, she faced forward, glad he couldn't see her face. “Why have you brought me here," the young woman with Lucas said, turning to face Lucas and Emily realized with a jolt it was Marjorie? Her mouth snapped open.Whatever happened to, 'her brother would have my head?' Did Lucas realize what he was doing?Chuckling, Lucas drew Marjorie closer. One hand resting
The sun was yet to rise in the morning, and the day was slowly turning bright when Cole stirred in his bedchamber. His eyes resting on the canopy above his bed and for a moment or two, he forgot where he was.But it took only a few moments for his eyes to adjust, and he remembered where he was and who he was sharing his bed with. With a curse, Cole sat up on the bed and glared at the woman who had turned his bedchamber to a feminine joke. Her body clad in a silk night rail was twisted and her legs were tangled with his. With everything that had happened, Cole didn't think he had the patience for a woman who didn't know how to sleep right. A woman who had been spying at him in the lake! Even though she had denied having spied at him. Cole didn't believe her. Who did she think she was deceiving? He had seen that sultry look in her eyes, and how she had been looking at him with open wide adoration. The scenario at the
IT'S BEEN EXACTLY one hour since Cole saw his worst nightmare come to life. There were more people in his home than he cared to have. As if the number of guests in Tonfield hall wasn't enough, Emily had to go and invite more. The bloody amateur actors and professionals currently acting out a play of hamlet in his music room, which had been opened up by series of folding doors to include the dining room and the drawing-room was not the sight Cole had hoped to see that evening after escaping the countless quip of his friend, he had hoped for a better day and not this. And to think everyone was enjoying themselves except him infuriated him more than he cared to admit. The space was crowded with guests seated in high-back chairs and settees. And as the population grew, and was not as big as what would be required in an original theatre house. It was easy for everyone to see the act on the makeshift stage which was basking in the
Emily looked to her husband, their object ofdiscussion, and found he was equally looking at her. Though he was trying to keep an indifferent expression Emily still saw how affected he was by her little act. It was there in the tightening of his jaw, in the muscle that throbbed there and those icy ey
Right before her eyes his hazel eyes darkened.Emily was five and twenty and didn't think she was getting any younger to let her husband wander aimlessly around as if he didn't have a wife to please at home. They had still not consummated their marriage, and the taste of what he had given her a year ago had been her anchor throughout those lonely nights at Blakewood Manor and her demise. Because he had awoken a passion she did not know what to do with. He had taught her passion and then left without satisfying her.“I don't get it.” His voice rolled out roughly. “What is it you want from me. Other women in your position would have rejoiced and well-used the money I left you. But not you, you chose to host a house party and force me here. Why? What is it you want from me.”At that question, Emily wanted nothing more than to say everything. But she had a sinking feeling he would laugh at her should she say what exactly was in her mind
At George's entrance, Cole released her, and she stumbled forward, resisting the urge to turn around and snap at him. Forcing herself to smile, Emily affected a calm demeanour and turned to her brother. “Nothing you should worry yourself for—George.”Howbeit, her brother didn't seem to hear her because he was staring over her head at Cole. They were sizing each other up in some kind of staring match that grew the tension in the room a notch high. After a while, George nodded his head and spoke gruffly. “Is that true Tonfield?”For several seconds Cole stared at George. Emily was even beginning to think he would not say a thing when his hazel eyes narrowed at him. And a look of utter irritation crossed his face. “Surely you do not expect me to answer you. You do not deserve an explanation from me. If you want one, then ask your sister for it.”That explanation did not seem to satisfy George because he tur
“What in God's name do you think you are doing here.” A low throaty voice murmured.Startled, Emily turned and saw her husband. He was dressed in a royal blue coat, buttoned over a lean waist, white pantaloons and black hessian boots. And was looking at her as if she had just done wrong.Emily grimaced. Because at that moment, she felt like a small child caught misbehaving.Earlier in the day when Emily had woken up a little after ten and had gone downstairs to have a quiet breakfast as most of the guests had already eaten and sought to seek their entertainment elsewhere. Emily had climbed upstairs for a little adventure trying to see if she can find anything about her husband as most of the servants weren't willing to tell her anything, and she was too scared to befriend Cole's friend just, so she can ask him.Although the duke of Hanton seemed amused by her, she got the distinct impression he didn't like en

Hoping to right his wrongs, Cole swung on top of his horse and reared the animal left, cursing himself for teaching her how to ride astride. He couldn't see her back, Emily had gained a measurable distance ahead of him and seems intent on keeping it. As he urged his stallion faster and faster, Cole looked around him, deciding which way to follow as it was clear he wouldn't meet up with her if they followed the same path.He will have to get to her in another way. If he continued in this path, he would lose sight of her.Swinging his horse around, Cole took another route. A shorter one. This time barely seeing the trees as he passed them in a flash. Looking ahead with firm determination.Several minutes later he appeared a good distance away from Tonfield hall and saw her fleeting form dart into the house. A flash of her yellow gown and that was all. Cole increased his pace, urging his bay stallion into a wicked gallop that soon brought him a stone t
Emily woke up the next morning with a little flutter in her stomach as she remembered the events of last night and how her husband had been so gentle with her, holding her in such a way that had cleared all her doubts, and had her believing he must have some deep feelings for her.At the point, she had wanted nothing more than to scream out she loved him, but at the last minute held herself back because she wanted it to be a surprise. She wanted it to be the first thing she would say to him in the morning, but as she turned to the side of the bed to do as she had planned in her mind, she discovered he was gone.Though aware he was going to Derbyshire, she still felt a trifle hurt he hadn't woken her up to tell her he was leaving. But as her eyes skidded to the vanity table, and she saw the single rose. Though no note was attached to it, it spoke volumes to her. He was trying to say something to her without words Just like that day he had given her a rose af
At their departure, Cole turned properly to his wife and held her chin, lifting her face. “What's all this about? Tell me, Emily,” he murmured and then held his breath, waiting, hoping she would say something, anything that she didn't want him to go. Or she would miss him, but he should have known not to expect much because she only shook her head and held the label of his coat tighter sniffling. Cole sighed.“Emily,” he murmured, his voice gentle and soft, trying to prompt her into talking to him, but to his surprise, she raised her head and looked up at him through shiny emerald eyes.“Don't ask,” She swiped her nose. “At least not today, please.” Her lower lips trembled, and she hugged his body, burying her head on his chest. “I just want you to hold me.”Cole was lost for words. He looked down at Emily and felt his heart tug. He knew she was still troubled about something and would want nothing more than to know what it was at l
Present Day.“Come, milady, we must get you ready in time.”Still hovering near the hearth where the maids had left her, Emily stared at the two chambermaids who had come to help her with her bath at the request of her husband and wondered why he would even bother. She hasn't had a lady's maid in a long while and had been bathing on her own, and he knew that. So why send up chambermaids to aid her. Why now?Lowering her lashes Emily affected a small smile and followed them to the tub, letting them fuss over her dispensing with her items.“Did he say why he — er — sent you people,” She mumbled as she lowered herself in the hot tub, sighing briefly as she felt the hot caress of the water. One maid went for her back, taking a cloth to wipe it clean while the other fussed with her hair.“He didn't say milady though I heard he went into town and ...” The girl trailed off and
It had been there before, this feeling, but she hadn't been able to see it like this. But now that she knew it was, it was as though with every passing moment it came knocking on her door, overpowering her. She felt this ridiculous need to blurt out her love for him. To say she loved him and hear the same from him, even when she knew that was impossible. Her husband might have taken her into his confidence, but there was nothing about the man that screamed his love. Sure, he was gentle and careful with her. He loved her company greatly, but did he love her? Will he ever love her? No, he must! He has to. Emily bit her lips, stopping the trembling in time.“Emily?”She raised her face, almost widening her eyes as she remembered he could still see her face as his eyes were yet to be tied. She lowered her face almost immediately. Her heart beating.“What's wrong?” The words floated in the air between them, concern
At once, he wrapped his hand around her, gently lifting her off the ground until her feet were dangling from his body and one arm came crushing her to his hard masculine body as he let her feet touch to the ground againAngling his head for a better kiss he kissed her thoroughly in a way that made Emily's breath catch in her throat, and she forgot everything and everyone except this man and what he was doing to her, the wonderful flutter in her stomach threatening to explode.Their harsh breath was out in the air. His hand moving over her body in a very accustomed way. Moving past the small of her back in a frenzied manner to her buttocks when it reached the back of her thigh, he hoisted her into his arms and dropped a kiss in the corner of her mouth. Moaning.Still not releasing her lips, he blindly fumbled his way around, revelling in the glory of her lips.Walking a little more in that state he lifted his h
The following weeks that camewerespent beautifully. From riding early in the morning to spending time in the garden and playing billiard of which Emily always won. She suspected Cole had something to do with it. He was awfully losing a lot. Pushing the wrong balls. It had to be that or nothing else.Meanwhile, Coleon the other handwas irrevocably and utterly happy. Never had he felt anything like this before. He was enjoying her company immensely. And at one point had told his workmen to take a day or two off, and that was after he had already asked them not to work in
IMMEDIATELY Cole left, Emily shot out of the bed and wore her night rail. She bit her lips and stared at the bed where they had made love last night. Blushed as she remembered how she had writhed under Cole, demanding him in every way possible. She remembered something else too as she moved closer to the bed. What he had said last night and even this morning. “You are mine.” Emily mouthed, savouring the words. Her brows furrowed as she wondered what it meant.Dare she hope?Climbing back to the bed, Emily wondered why she was embarrassed when she was getting everything she ever wanted. She didn't mind seeing Cole naked. No, she didn't think she minded seeing that broad chest, that well-toned stomach which flexed as he took in a deep breath and those powerful muscular thighs. No, she didn't think she minded. Her problem was with herself. How she couldn't keep her eyes away from him. Emily had a mind to tell him to take her again that morning bu
