One word: Silence.
The music stops, gasps are heard, followed by the sound of someone's fart.
I'm not that much of a fighter, neither do I have anger management issues. In fact, I can count the number of times I've gotten mad throughout my human existence but this tops it all. It also tops the time I went for a house party Junior year and got dared to go home during a game of Truth or Dare. Teenagers are evil.
Noah doesn't make any move and stays still after the first punch lands on his jaw as if trying to process in his brain what just happened. Before he can fully react, I pounce on him.
"You bloody thief!" I screech, continuously driving my fists into his face. He uses his arms to dodge my blows as I aim for his chest area instead. I'm about to aim for his face again when I feel large arms wrap themselves around my waist and yank me off him.
"Let me at him!" I struggle against Cory's tight grip.
"What's your problem?!" Cory snaps at me.
"That thief stole my neck chain!" He looks between me and the boy on the ground, raising him on his feet with a hand and unbuckling my chain on his neck.
"Is this yours?"
"Fuck yeah!" I snatch the object from his hand.
"Let's go man, it's not worth it," Someone pats him on the shoulder when he's about to blow off on us, dragging him away from the murmuring crowd.
"Yeah you better walk away!" Yep, that's me yelling after them.
"Let it go Allie, what is your problem?"
"He is my problem. The goober doesn't even apologize after he was caught red handed."
"How are you sure he stole it? You can't accuse people like that," I stare hard at him.
"Are you even listening to yourself? You're supposed to be on my side," I can't believe Cory's defending him.
"I'm on no one's side. I just want what's right," He pinches the bridge of his nose, a habit I noticed anytime he's pissed. "When one person starts an issue with another school it becomes a general feud between both schools, and do I need to remind you who owns this resort?"
I stare down at my feet. "The Kingston's?"
"Exactly. Our bags and luggages could be thrown out tomorrow morning out of the hotel rooms and where do we go from there?"
"Nowhere," I sulk.
"NOWHERE. Our whole trip is going to be a disaster all because of a matter that should've gone 'Hey that looks like mine, can I see it?' but you had to go King Kong on him," I brave myself to look up at him and find his eyes already focused on mine. Please let the next words to come out from his mouth not be what I think it is.
"You have to go apologize."
Goddamnit!
"You can't be serious!" He gives me a stern look. "Fine. You're serious, I'm going."
I throw my hands up in defeat and walk over to the resort's health center. I'm definitely going to be shunned but it's worth a shot. Mabel would laugh in my face if I get back home weeks before the end of summer.
I push open the door to the resort's health center and request for a first aid kit, shooting the nurse a 'Don't ask' look before storming out.
People soon start leaving the party not before staring at me.
"You should sort it out, I don't want to go home yet," A girl says and walks past me.
"I like 'em feisty. We should hang out in the Suite room sometime." A guy says and winks. Ok that one's totally drunk.
"He deserved that punch. I was talking to him yesterday and he just stood up and left," Been there, done that.
Lacey comes up next tsks at me. "We need to work more on your flirting skills."
Behind her comes Simone. "In case you heard someone fart in the crowd, that was me. I was shocked and I had to let the tension out of my... you know..."
"Jeez Stop. You're so gross," I scrunch my face up in disgust as she shrugs nonchalantly.
"I think I saw them go that way," She points to the entrance of the second pool and fastens her pace to meet up with Lacey.
With the first aid kit in one hand and my sweaty palms wiping themselves on my bump short, I brace myself up and make my way to where Simone directed me at.
There's a group of guys hovering over where Noah is seated with an ice pack held to the side of his face.
"Why did you let her hit you?" One says.
"She didn't offer me another choice Dylan," Noah seethes out.
"Hey." All six eyes turn to stare at me. Eight now including Noah. "Leave us."
I tell his friends. If I was going to be humiliated, I didn't want three other people to see it.
"We're not so sure about that..." The one whose name is Dylan says.
"What? I'm not going to kill your friend."
Reluctantly, they drag their feet against the floor and go the opposite way, looking back at us occasionally like they were going to catch me driving a dagger up his neck.
I set the kit open on the bench and bring out an antiseptic wipe.
"Get away from me. You can't be the cause and the cure," He scowls. Noah is scowling, big surprise there.
"Hold still. You'll get a tetanus infection before the break of dawn and I don't want anyone dying because of me." I don't know how true the dying part is, I just remember Simone's Mom used to tell me that when I was little.
I frown slightly when I see a feint scar beside the flesh on his right eye. It's not visible until you're this close to his face and it looks it's going to be a deep injury the first time he had it. My fingers itch to touch it but I'm already staring at his face for too long so I use the antiseptic wipe on the cut down below his eye.
Noah winces when the stinging alcohol touches the opened cut. I use a small sized Band Aid to cover that part up when I'm done and move to the next part where one of my blows did harm. His lips.
My gaze fly up to meet his to find him staring at me. Correction, frowning at me. Again, no surprise there.
My fingers grazes the skin there lightly to clean the wound but lingers too much in his lip area.
Great, now he's going to think I'm a pervert.
"Don't be such a pervert and give me that," Noah snarls and snatches the wipe from my hand to apply it himself.
"You want to explain why you stole my neck chain?" I know I was sent here to apologize but come on, a girl need answers.
"I didn't steal your stupid neck chain."
"Oh, so it mysteriously grew wings and flew from my luggage to yours. How believable."
"Look, believe whatever you want. I don't have time for this." He stands up from the chair and I spring up to go after him.
"Wait!" He turns around so that we could be face to face. "Ok, let's just say you didn't steal my neck chain and whatever fiasco happened back there never took place."
"Never took place? Do you need a smack on the head because I am this close to giving you one."
"I'm trying to make things work out here. Don't make this hard for me. If you hadn't stolen my neck chain in the first place, none of this would've happened."
He walks closer and bends a little so that our faces are inches apart. "I DID NOT STEAL YOUR NECK CHAIN."
"Ok, you didn't steal it. We didn't get off on the right foot and maybe we could to start over again?" I outstretch my arms for a handshake when he doesn't respond. "Hi, I'm Allie."
"I never asked for your name."
"Hi, I'm Allie," I press further, ignoring his snide remark. "And you are?"
He stares at me like I'm the weirdest thing on earth before rolling his eyes. "I'm Freddie. Can you leave me alone now?"
"Wow, so you're a thief and a liar. Well that completes it."
"What are you talking..." I cut him off by placing a finger on the tip of his nose.
"Now, now Noah," I see his eyes widen. "All I'm asking is that you let this whole thing go and call it a truce."
"Move the finger or you lose the finger." I oblige immediately, not wanting to test his patience. "And no, I'm not letting all that go."
"Come on! Just hit me instead." This whole thing is harder than I thought.
"I would've done so minutes ago if you weren't a girl, but I do have something in mind that would make me feel much more better."
"Go on...?" Where is he driving at?
He stares at me for some minutes before jabbing two fingers at my shoulders. Next thing I know, my feet are no longer on the ground and I feel myself falling backwards where the pool is.
And then I hit the water with a loud splash.
I sink down the water like a rock.As I sink, I look up the water above me. Distorted lights dance at the top of the water and it feels warm against my skin. It would have been peaceful, except for the fact that I swallowed in gallons of pool water already into my mouth and nose and is struggling for my life. How deep is this damn pool?My lungs begin to ache for air as I use my hands to flap and yank myself upwards. I cough out water from my mouth like a fountain and take in a breath of fresh air, reminiscing how I could have could've died seconds ago I didn't know how to swim. With a hand, I wipe off the water running down my face to glare at an unconcerned looking Noah."You pushed me!" I yell."Tell me something I don't know." I'm still trying to gasp for air, not believing he's cool with almost killing a person. "It's smaller than I thought."I frown deeply. "What?""I can see through your shi
I force another spoonful of food into my mouth and smile awkwardly at Simone."So? How is it?" She asks."It's great, never tasted anything like it." I'm not a very good liar but I'm sure that comes out as believable because she beams. I glance at the rest of the guys on the table and we all share awkward looks. You might be wondering what's going on. Well for starters, I think any meal Simone cooks should come out of the pot with a label that says: Eat me if you want to die.The Salmon resting on my plate stares at me and I stare back. So earlier today, we came up with the idea of learning new traditional Hawaiian foods. We see the hotel chefs doing their thing every time in the kitchen and we got inspired. I mean, if they can, why can't we?I found out the answer to that question today. They have a Culinary art diploma while we have a High school diploma. We went for the Lomi Salmon because it looked the easiest to make.
"You shouldn't have texted in the first place," I say and exit the lounge with Lacey behind, saying something about what outfit she'll rock to tonight's club party but I block her out when the evening wind hits my face. I take a few steps into the parking lot and look down at the water, which looks almost orange in the glow of the sun. I spot a few surfers out in the waves who looked like they weren't about leaving anytime soon. It's going to be Friday night within a couple of hours, which means everyone is ditching their works already to get ready for clubbing tonight.I'm not going. As much as I love just the sound of the word 'party' itself, I'm going to have to bunk in on this one. Mom and Mabel have already scheduled out tonight to Skype with me. I didn't talk to them yet since I arrived in Hawaii, only random texts from Mabel telling me about Mom's attempt at a dating site and her stupid Kermit the Frog memes. The sun disappears behind t
Silence to me, is torture. It seems like an ordinary Friday night, so to speak, except from the fact that I'm boxed up in a truck with a boy who doesn't look too thrilled to be breathing in the same air with me.The silence stretches between us like a long, fat rope, tightening me around the neck as if to suffocate the living daylights out of me. I shift uncomfortably in my seat before outstretching my arms to turn on the radio. The sound of music might keep me alive for awhile.Marvin Gaye's Sexual healing blasts loudly through the speakers and I realize I shouldn't have turned on the radio.Baby, I'm hot just like an ovenI need some lovin'And baby, I can't hold it much longerIt's getting stronger and strongerMy hand goes up to awkwardly scratch the back of my neck, my eyes darting in all corners of the truck to find something that'll catch my attention and keep me away from staring at him.A
My cellphone blares at some ungodly hour of the morning, waking me out of my blissful slumber. I roll over and slap a hand on my nightstand till it finds my phone. It takes me some seconds to figure out how to answer the stupid call, then I bring it to my ears and grunt out an hello."I can't sleep.""Excuse me?" I take a peek at the caller ID and see Mabel's name boldly written there. "Have you tried closing your eyes?""Sometimes I wonder how we're related. Anyway, I've got big news.""Can't it wait till when every normal human being is awake?""Zach asked me out."I sit upright on my bed, suddenly very awake now. "ZACH DID WHAT?!"There's going to be a funeral when I get back home to Florida."Calm your tits, I didn't give him an answer yet. What do you think?"A sharp pain jabs at the walls of my stomach and I wince, scurrying out of bed into the bathroom as I flicker on the lights. I groan when I see my pajama
When I'm done in the bathroom, I step back into the room and set our alarm clock to go off in five minutes, then lock it up in a box and shove it under Simone's bed. She'd be so thrilled.I step into the hallway next and head for Cory's room. I can't be the only one having a bad morning. A few girls are already up and loitering in the hallway and lobby, taking orders from Renee before scattering out to get to work.I burst open the door to Cory's room without knocking even after reading the sign Do not disturb. I'm know I'm acting like an annoying little sister right now.The boys room is decent and well kept unlike what I originally had in mind. I wasn't exactly expecting a dumpster of a room and I also wasn't expecting it to be so well organized. All three of their beds are neatly made and the soft music playing at the background makes the serenity feel more warm.Noah is already awake but still on his bed, holding a book
Today is the day I die. Either from Noah's long and hard stare, or mob beaten by hungry guests.Despite my job now hanging on the line between me getting fired, which I don't really care about because I'm not getting a dime out of this, I'm more concerned on the monstrous assumptions Noah already has in his head.Did he really hear everything? I can't tell. His bushy eyebrows are slightly furrowed, and his mouth is set into a line as thin as paper. A well known scowl. He should know very well by now that my mouth works without a zipper and everything that comes out of it shouldn't be taken too seriously. Mom had always told me my mouth diarrhea would get me into trouble one day, and today is definitely looking like that day.Sharp heels click themselves to our direction as I see Miss Renee stomping towards us, looking like she's about to shove a stick up someone's ass.Point of correction, that ass would be mine.Woe
I keep my feet planted on the surfboard, knees bent, arms loose, and my eyes looking in the direction I'm going. My dampened hair sticks to the side of my face as the rush of the wind kicks the sea into into a huge wave. I almost lose my balance from the force of the wave but Cory's grip on my arms has me pull myself back to my perfect position. It's a perfect Tuesday afternoon for a surf date with Cory— that's what I call it, sue me— and we both sneaked out of kitchen duties to hang out with dolphins instead. They seem friendlier than actual humans these days.I opted for a wetsuit, and I'm glad I did because it's keeping my body warm in the cold water, preventing chills. Cory's figure becomes distorted as the water separates and comes between us. We connect our hands through the water as he unexpectedly drags me away from my surfboard and lands me on his hands, carrying me bridal style."I didn't plan for this!" I yell over the lo
I've always suffered from this horrible disadvantageous condition— it's called waking late on days I'm supposed to have early flight schedules. I'm starting to think it's an actual thing, so I'm not surprised it's less than an hour for my flight and I'm still on bed, feeling something fat and fluffy on my face. "Whiskers?" Its Mabel's voice that wakes me up. Not the fluffy stuff on my face. Whatever it is. Gradually, I open my eyes, and I'm face to face with a white feline. It brings out its tongue to lick my nose before purring with pleasure. Last time I checked, we didn't have a cat. "Whiskers! There you are." I hear footsteps approach my bed as Mabel carries the feline off my face. "Sorry. I thought I left her downstairs." I ask the obvious question. "When did we get a cat?" "Last night. I found her outside beside our waste bin. She seemed so lost. Is it okay if I keep her?" I ease out of my bed. "Just make s
Five years later."Fuck out of my room.""It tastes good, you should try it.""You know I hate pineapple toppings on pizzas."Mabel dumps the box of pizza on my bed. "Have you ever wondered why pizzas come in rectangular boxes, shaped in a circle, and eaten in triangles?""I guess we'll never know."With a sigh, Mabel folds her arms across her chests. "Could you at least act like you're happy to be home for thanksgiving?"I point towards the door. "Leave. I have work to do and I won't get it done if you're going to stand there all day and talk about pizzas.""Work?" She scoffs. "The only work you do is sit behind your laptop and stalk your boyfriend on Instagram.""He's not my boyfriend! MOM," I call out. "Mabel's bullying me!""Real mature."Zack, Simone's brother, walks into the room and hugs her from behind. "Hey babe."Even now that Mabel's much old
It feels like the first week of summer all over again where we hosted this Welcome party. Now we're hosting another, and this time it's a send-off party. The kind of gathering where we say goodbyes to the friends we made over the holidays.I overhear a couple promising each other to call and text everyday, some breaking up because they can't commit to a long distance relationship. I can't even find Noah anywhere, and I'm nervous about how we'll end up after this summer. I don't want to be remembered as some random girl he hooked up with during a summer vacation in Hawaii. Yes, I want to be remembered, but not that way."Hey, lover girl." I holler at Simone, signaling for her to come over. The sun went down hours ago and it's a beach party with bonfires lighting up the whole place."Hey to you too." She downs a bottle of beer in one gulp and throws the empty bottle to the sand. "So, this summer ended, and so did my relationship.""W
It's 2' O clock Pm on Thursday, and I won't stop pacing my room.I'm already dressed in a maroon dress, the skirt flowing smoothly below my knees with a pink cardigan on top of my shoulders to make it look a bit more casual, and my black flats are beside the door, ready to wear. I leave my hair falling loose to my shoulders, its waves free from the hairband I'd used on it almost everyday."Would you chill? It's not like it's your first date with a boy." Lacey lays upside down on my bed. "Or is it?""It's not. Last date with a boy was just before this vacation.""How'd it go?""We were in a fancy restaurant. He left for the restroom halfway into our meal and never came back.""At least he paid the bill before he left." I give her a look. "Oh, he didn't.""I just want tonight to be perfect, but I'm scared I'm going to mess things up.""Relax. I'm sure Noah's as nervous as you are right now.""You th
I wake up with Noah braced on his elbows and gazing down at me, idly playing with my hair. The sheets are covering my body up to my bare chests, and his is just above his waist."Hey," I murmur."You sleep with your eyes open, do you know that?" He says it with a smile. "It's quite mesmerizing."I glance towards the window and see it's still night out. "How long was I gone for?""A little over an hour. It's 10' pm.""I'm sorry I feel asleep.""It's alright." He rubs a thumb between my eyes. "I liked watching you sleep."I stretch, then shift so that I'm cradled by the pillows. Experimentally, I lay a hand on my breast. My heart is bumping along at a normal rate now rather than with that snare drum riff it had reached when he nuzzled just there. It's an odd feeling, to have someone suckling you, to have him pull you inside him. And to experience those mirror tugs in the womb.Everything he did makes my body feel diff
Noah's clicking away on his phone when I meet him in the private room and my stomach jumps again.I could always change my mind, I remind myself. There is no obligation there. But his head shoots up from his phone to study me before I can turn back and run away.Like I always do."Sorry I'm late," I say.He waves it off. "Lacey told me to meet you here.""Yes, that was the idea."He doesn't ask any more questions like I thought he would, just steps forward. "You look great.""I feel great." I smile. "Lacey and Simone get a charge out of going through my closet and criticizing my wardrobe. I'm told this is about the only decent thing I own." I pluck at the skirt. "They've threatened to take me shopping."Stop babbling! I order myself, moving behind the mini bar. "Want a drink?""I'm driving.""Actually, I was thinking we could just stay in." There, now I'd done it.
Every night for three days, I wake in the grip of a nightmare, drenched in sweat, with screams locked in my throat. Always the same: I'd be in Noah's house again from two years ago, and everything would play out accordingly the way it did that same night, except it's Clarke aiming the gun at Noah and pulling the trigger.Night after night, just before I pull myself awake, I'd watch him whimper and writhe as the bullet bites into his flesh, draining all life from his eyes. But this night, it gets too intense that I wake up with a scream, my whole body trembling with fear and terror. I pull the sheets off my body and head out the door, walking straight down to his room to see if he's okay.I know he is, but the dreams are beginning to get out of hand that I now fear for his safety. What do the dreams mean? Should I be worried? Or is my head just playing tricks on me?It's midnight and the halls are empty. The door to his room creaks open w
It's not until I'm back at the hotel and unpacking that I realize that through the last twenty-four hours of my stay at the spa, I hadn't thought of my troubles, my responsibilities at all. And now that I do realize it, there's a quick wash of guilt that it should have been so easy to leave it all behind, to immerse myself in pampering and pleasure.Like walking into an alternate reality, I suppose, and grimace as I tumble pretty gold boxes onto my bed. Which might explain why I'd barely put up a struggle when Lacey and Simone had urged me to buy creams, lotions, scents, shampoo.Christ Almighty, hundreds of dollars worth of female foolishness that I'm unlikely to remember to use.I tug my jeans on, trailing my shirt from my fingers as I walk to the window. The air swooping down from Oahu is bitter. There's no sun in the sky, and I'm grateful for that.I study the scatter of gold boxes over the simple quilt on my bed which looks li
"Oh. My." Is all I can say. Almost all I'd managed to say since we'd driven to the Mountain King Spa and Resort. And by 'we' I mean Lacey, Simone and I.The main lodge of the Spa spreads for acres, glass and wood and clever pebbled paths through evergreens and heated pools where steam curls in dreamy mists.I clutch the strap of my purse tightly as we check in, my head swiveling in wonder around the plush lobby with it's double fireplace, atrium ceiling, and lush plants. They somehow managed to drag me down here for a proper clean-up after I told them about my not so official date with Noah. I wasn't even half as excited about it as they were, and it's almost as if they've been planning this for a long time.Lacey greets the desk clerk with a friendly smile, calls him by name, and chats easily about how much she and her companion had enjoyed their stay earlier in the season. He all but simpers over her, calling up a bellman
