Celeste’s POV

“Call your men off, you coward!” I shouted as the security guards seized me.

They escorted me out of the building with practiced efficiency. The closer we got to the entrance, the more my indignation built.

Damien had no right to treat people like his playthings.

“You’re the most air-headed, selfish asshole I’ve had the displeasure of knowing.” I shouted at the entrance of his company.

His jaw clenched as the passing employees eyed us.

“Celeste, this is my place of work.” He said through gritted teeth.

I couldn’t care less about preserving his reputation. One day, the upstanding businessman facade would shatter and I’d watch with glee.

“Make sure you fetch our daughter on Monday or god help you.” I warned coldly before leaving.

All too soon, I was in my studio building’s parking garage.

Flipping down the sun visor, I gasped at my reflection. An obvious hickey peeked out of the neckline of my blouse and I smacked myself for not seeing it sooner.

I covered it with the la

Aside from her hazel eyes, she was an adorable, tiny version of Ryan. “Who is this angel?” I gushed.“Say hi Molly.” Ryan told her sweetly. She tucked herself behind him and peeked at me under dark lashes. “She’s a bit shy.” He chuckled. “This is Molly, my niece. I’m taking care of her while my sister-in-law and brother are away on business.”My gaze was drawn to his exposed chest as he spoke–he’d left an extra button undone. I glanced away and squatted down to the girl’s level. “Hi, Molly. It’s nice to meet you. I’m Celeste.”“And I’m Grace.” She said, crouching beside me.Ryan smiled encouragingly at her. “Don’t be afraid, Mols.”“Hi.” she said, voice soft and sweet. The girl clutched something in her hands and my eyes brightened when I saw it was an art case.“Do you like drawing Molly?” I asked. She smiled tentatively and nodded.“Really? Can I see your art?” Just like that, she let go of Ryan’s le

Celeste’s POV“Thank you, Molly.” I blinked back tears and smiled at her. “Your parents are very lucky to have you as a daughter. You’re an angel.”I wanted to scream. My daughter couldn’t be lucky, could she? She hated my freaking guts. But Molly looked up at me like she wholly believed what she’d said, and I hoped she was right. Hoped my daughter would come back to me.“But they don’t have time for me.” Her voice was so small.I tilted her chin up.“Hey, they love you, honey.” I smiled warmly. “But if you’re ever bored or lonely, you’re welcome to visit me.”Molly nodded, sniffling.I crouched down and wrapped my arms around her. She squeezed me so tight that I felt comforted and wondered which of us needed the hug more. We were smiling by the time we released each other.Ryan crouched down, booping her nose. “Mols, the bathroom is through that door. You can go look at your hair in the mirror.”He pursed his lips as she ambled away. “Her parents are extremely busy at work and seldo

Damien’s POV“Did you just say Rosemary will be there?” I breathed into my phone, bewildered.“Yes, sir. She’s a special guest at Celine Mars’ party tomorrow night.” Miss Wilson responded. “She’s planning to introduce her to her most influential friends.”I’d finally caught a break. If I attended that party, I’d be able to speak to that pain in the ass secretive designer and save my company. But if I didn’t, Rosemary would sign with one of Celine’s wealthy guests.“I need an invitation to that party. Make it happen.” I ended the call and tossed my phone onto the sofa.“Sorry, Bon-Bon.” I ruffled her hair. “Daddy had to take that call, but I’m all yours now.”She shrugged, nibbling a fry. “It’s okay, Daddy. I know you always have to work.”With my company nearing a state of collapse, I’d been too busy to spend any time with her. She seemed withdrawn, so I left work early.“How’s your burger?” I asked, taking a bite of my own.I’d bought an array of junk food–I wasn’t sure which was Bo

Celeste’s POVLight from countless flashing cameras burned my retinas as I stepped out of the cab. They were upon us before Grace could even close the door.Celine Mars’ private party seemed more like the event of the century. We linked arms and pushed through the reporters as they swarmed us, asking questions faster than I could listen. But one made me stumble over my own feet.“Are either of you the mysterious designer, Rosemary?”Grace steadied me and kept walking until we joined the flowing line of runway ready guests entering the mansion. We wore simple yet bold cocktail dresses. I noticed several appreciative glances thrown our way. “How did they know I’d be here?” I whispered. She surveyed the reporters being held back by security and shook her head in amazement.“With this crowd, nothing stays private for long.”I swallowed, steadying my nerves. At the massive doors, a lady asked for our names, eyes scanning a tablet.“Rosemary.” I said, voice even despite my nerves. She stopp

Celeste’s POV“Let go of me, you caveman.” I hissed, yanking my arm free from Damien’s grasp.Only he would have the nerve to insinuate I snuck into this lavish event to seduce Celine’s husband. It took a special cocktail of delusion, arrogance, and crazy.“Frankly, you pathetically trying to cozy up to the elite doesn’t surprise me.” Damien said coldly. “No, it’s the fact that a worthless housewife made it through the front doors that I find astounding. You don’t belong here, Celeste.” He stalked towards me, and I backed away.“But I’m more than happy to rectify that mistake.” His lips curled into a twisted smile. Then Brian stepped in front of me, his tall frame towering over Damien. “That is no way to treat a lady, never mind one of Celine’s honored guests.” The powerful man glowered. “Show some respect to Ms. Rosemary.”Damien froze where he stood, stupefied.“You mean to say that the woman behind you is the rising designer, Rosemary?” He furrowed his eyebrows, incredulous. “No o

I placed a hand over my mouth, chuckling. “Whatever you need to tell yourself to show your face in public.”“I’m giving you an opportunity to expand your business and get out of the minor leagues, Celeste. Think wisely before you throw it away.” He spoke through gritted teeth.I gave him a blasé shrug. “Why would I

Celeste’s POV“I’m not an idiot.” Vanessa glowered at Damien. “This dull housewife is not Rosemary.”He cocked an eyebrow. “Why would I lie?”Her eyes flashed with rage as she studied the two of us.“You’re making up this crap, so you have an excuse to cozy up to Celeste, aren’t you?” She planted her hands on her hips, pregnant belly jutting out as she glared at us.“For god’s sake, be rational Vanessa.” He said, exasperated. “How else would Celeste even get into a party like this?”She thought for a moment, then her mouth scrunched into a frown.“That doesn’t mean you have to do business with her!” She stamped her foot like a petulant toddler. “Rosemary is just some over hyped nobody whose jewelry and reputation are fake.”That was the final straw. My temper had hit the tall roof of Celine’s opulent hall. “You’re such a hypocrite.” I strode up to her, voice deathly low. “I worked damn hard for everything that I’ve accomplished. Celeste’s POV“You’re a lame, toxic mom! Don’t try to ruin our happy family!” Bonnie screeched. Her face scrunched into a hostile scowl that stabbed daggers at my heart.A lame, toxic housewife? I somehow doubted those concepts were in my preschooler’s curriculum.“That’s right, sweetie. Tell the bad woman to stop trying to tear our family apart.” Vanessa said. She stroked Bonnie’s hair like a heartless puppeteer.“All this time, you’ve been poisoning Bonnie’s mind against me, haven’t you?” I asked through clenched teeth. “How could you so blatantly manipulate her to damage our relationship?”She batted her doe eyes. “Little old me? The fact that you would even suspect me of something like that is appalling, Celeste.”I had my suspicions, but the satisfied smirk that cut her face confirmed them.“Vanessa, how could you be so cruel?” I asked, voice strained as I held back the heartache of yet another betrayal. “A child doesn’t come up with such complex ideas on their own.” She shrugged

Celeste’s POVKeeping my eyes on the road as I drove felt like climbing mount Everest. I kept glancing at the rearview mirror for reassurance that this was real and my daughter was, in fact, sitting in my backseat.Molly gazed at the cars out of the window, content. But Bonnie was consumed with picking at her nails, chewing on the cuticles and leaving her nail beds a torn mess. For someone who spent exuberant amounts of time and money on manicuring her nails, Vanessa had done a poor job of correcting this bad habit.“Hey girls, who wants to listen to some music?” I asked with a smile, hoping to distract Bonnie.Molly bounced in her seat. “Yes, please Auntie Celeste!”My smile faltered as Bonnie shrugged and looked away. At a red traffic light, I quickly found one of her favorite songs and hit play.“Yay! It’s Twinkle Twinkle Little Star!” Molly smiled.“This was one of Bonnie’s favorite songs when she was little.” I said, glancing at her through the rearview mirror.“That song is lam

Was this how the bitch treated Bonnie when Damien and I weren’t around? She was lucky this fence was between us.“What’s that?” Vanessa asked, snatching the napkin from Bonnie’s hands. The girl jumped to take it back, yelping as her scabs cracked open.“Look what you did,” Vanessa scolded as she unwrapped the cookie. “And over this? My heart clenched as I turned to the stunned teachers.“Please forgive Bonnie’s outburst.” I said, voice steady despite my suffering. “She’s going through a difficult time, and I’d appreciate your understanding.”Lily pressed her lips into a thin line, brows furrowed.“Celeste, do you mind if I have a word before you leave?” She said, glancing at the girls. “Rachel, please watch them for a moment.”“Is something the matter?” I asked once we were out of earshot.Lily cleared her throat awkwardly. “I was going to call you to discuss some concerns I’ve had about Bonnie’s well-being that Damien and Vanessa have brushed off or ignored.”“Is this about them refusing to fetch her? She tried Damien’s again, but it was the same. No one was coming for Bonnie.“That poor girl is going to be here till dark again, isn’t she?” Rachel, one of the other kindergarten teachers, asked.Lily nodded, tapping her phone against her chin.“Why don’t you bring her to the reading corner? I’m still waiting for a student to be fetched, so at least she won’t look so pitifully lonely.”“How about I leave her with you and I go home at a decent time?” Lily asked, only half joking.“Fat chance.” Her colleagu

Damien fixed his pleading gaze on me. “You’re the only one who can keep our daughter safe. Please come home, Celeste.”The tenderness in his voice irked me. Where was all this concern when she was being brainwashed against me? It was too late.Vanessa was her mother now, not me.“Bonnie isn’t my problem anymore.” I said, tone harsh as a winter’s blizzard. “She prefers Vanessa’s abuse and doesn’t recognize me as her mother, so who am I to interfere?”His eyebrows creased, voice heavy with emotion. “Will you real

Vanessa’s outburst had cost me precious time–I had a stop to make before I headed to the office.“She fell while getting ready for school, but she’s fine now.” I said impatiently.Lily gave me a pointed stare. “I wouldn’t say that. These wounds should have been cleaned and dressed straight away.”“I’m sure you can understand—I’m a busy man.” I said, jaw clenched. She turned to Bonnie. “Please go to the school nurse, dear.” My daughter nodded solemnly and limped inside.“Mr. Kent, I have major concerns about Bonnie’s care.” The teacher gave me a hard stare. “She’s often late for school, fetched hours after pickup time, and now you’re dropping her off in such a neglectful state.”Her accusatory tone sent a spark of anger through me.“That’s none of your concern.” Lily tilted her chin up. “Her academic performance is slipping, and she’s slowly isolating herself from her peers.

Stumbling into my ensuite bathroom, I clutched the toilet seat, dry heaving until I felt faint.Morning sickness was a pain in the ass.I didn’t get a wink of sleep, and it showed. My reflection’s pale face and dark circles taunted me as I leaned against the sink. I clenched my teeth, knuckles white. It was all that thirsty slut’s fault. How dare she go after my man? Images of her throwing herself at Damien kept me up all night. She was ruining everything with her independent designer crap. My phone rang, and I wrinkled my nose when I saw the caller ID. It was Sasha–a friend I used to party with at college.“Vee! Why didn’t you tell me you were at the Mars party yesterday?” She spoke at lightning speed. “I saw your posts this morning.
