NORA'S POV

The moment I ended the call with Sam, I stood frozen in the middle of the consultation room, my heart thudding painfully in my chest. I could still hear the confusion in his voice, the way it cracked slightly when he asked who was with me. He wasn’t angry—just... desperate, and I hung up on him. I pressed a hand to my chest, trying to slow the erratic beating of my heart. Sam always knew how to throw me off balance.

Even now, divorced and with my life in pieces, he still managed to stir something in me—something I wasn’t ready to face.

Daniel cleared his throat softly, pulling me from my spiraling thoughts. “Do you want to talk about it?” he asked, his tone kind but cautious.

I shook my head quickly. “No. It’s nothing.” But we both knew that wasn’t true.

Daniel gave me a sympathetic smile, the kind you reserve for someone walking through a storm without an umbrella.

“Whatever it is, you’ll figure it out,” he said. “Just take care of yourself, okay?”
