Damon seriously considered the question, then answered, “I like it better when you’re a little bit silly.”

Jeanette chuckled and wrapped her arms around his neck, unable to help herself.

‘Damon Godfrey. His name would always draw countless screams—in both the schoolyard and when he grew into an adult. As if it were synonymous with perfection. He’ll never know how much I envy him.

‘From the tip of his hair to his toes, every part of him draws envy. It’s as if he were born to have everything in the world. He’s just too perfect. And now, this perfection belongs to me.’

A few days later, Jenny suddenly sent Jeanette an invitation to come home for dinner. She had specifically asked her not to bring her son and Damon along.

She found it strange, but she went home after work anyway.

Jeanette found her mother with reddened eyes as soon as she arrived home. She looked as if she had been crying.
