"You…" Cole breathes in and out. Calming her heart which was beating too fast for her to focus. "You said you were a doctor." She mentioned.
"Y-Yes." Vincent reaches into his pocket. "I can show you."
Cole tensed, but when Vincent took out his work badge and wallet, her shoulders relax. "Look", Vincent spoke as he held up the badge. "That's me… Vincent Lance."
She studied the badge with her eyes. His name and picture were on it. "Saint Hallman?" Cole read the top of the badge. "Saint Hallman's Hospital was destroyed four years ago." She looked at him curiously, remembering how the building glowed in the night. Like a torch against the night sky, Saint Hallman burned, while Cole and Doctor Isla viewed the horror; from the safety of a helicopter.
"You were there?" Cole wore a look of disbelief.
"Yes." Vincent pressed his lips together after admitting it.
"Then you knew a doctor…" Cole hesitated, then decided to describe the doctor. "She's not very tall… Brown hair, long, usually with a white clip in it. She's got brown eyes, olive skin, mole near her left ear, a voice that can cut through stone."
"Isla?" Vincent's look softened with familiarity. It would be impossible to forget his best friend. "Doctor Isla Mayfield. She's four feet and six inches tall, her husband's name is Roderick, and she h-has a dog. Chip."
"You know about Chip?" Cole suddenly smiled.
"Yes". Vincent carefully moves his hands over hers. "Because Chip was a birthday gift from me…" He reveals.
Hearing this, Cole smiles as she remembers how Isla cherished the pup. She would often spot Chip waiting in the halls. He followed her everywhere and often brought joy to the others. Even while separated by a window, the patients delighted seeing him. Chip had a cute collar with bowtie. The best times were when he showed up in costumes.
Warmth covers her fingers, as Vincent gently grips. He carefully pulls away her left hand. Then the right.
The man to the right of the bed slowly lowers his gun. "Thank you, Eris…" Vincent breathes in relief when he decided to back down.
Eris grumbled as he left the room to cool off. "You're outa your fucking mind, Vinny."
Vincent paid him no mind and got up to clean some things. Which were cluttered on a steel table. Cole follows him with her eyes. She could see old bandages and gauzes. Mixed with wrinkled plastic, ripped fabric, some towels, and old tubes. She watches as he bags everything. He carries it out without a word. Meanwhile, the unknown man to her right went back to his tampering. He wasn't as tall as the other two and looked boyishly young. Perhaps no older than fourteen? He continued his tampering until machine noises echoed, coupled with hissed breaths and hums.
Cole was about to sit up, when a strong pain spread through her chest.
"There…" The young boy stood up, just as Vincent returned with a duffel bag.
A cool draft flowed into the room. The coolness brushes over Cole's face, cooling her pink cheeks as she suffers a wave of pain. She lay stiffly in bed. A pool of tears brimming in her gray eyes. The others stood by clueless as they started to chat. Vincent began changing gloves, throwing the stained ones out. He slips on a clean pair and retrieves a device from the bag.
"Cole?"
Her eyes went wide as a figure slipped past the layer of plastic; separating the room. "O-Oliver?" Cole's heart filled with dread when she realized he was not wearing protection.
He smiles, holding out his arms to her. Love in his brown eyes. "Cole, I was so worried".
"N-No". Cole lay stiffly on the bed. Paralyzed by pain, she began to cry the closer he got to her bed. "Oliver, don't touch me… Don't…" She shut her eyes and pleaded. Tears stream down her pink cheeks. Cole's greatest fear was coming true… Another person she loved would suffer from exposure.
Meanwhile, a clueless doctor eyed her current weak state. Looking around when she speaks, then back at his patient. A look of concern forms on his face when he realizes.
"Oliver". Her soft sobs echo as Cole turns her head away. Cole felt her energy slipping when she began to shiver with fever. Then all at once, everything went black while she hears a final echo of the doctor's voice.
"Get me an IV. Now."
This time, Cole slept and dreamt of her parents. The moment they tied-the-knot was a core memory.
Then, at an unknown hour, Cole is woken by a shout.
"Vin, I'm telling you we have no more to spare!" Shouts erupt from beyond the partition. Cole opens her eyes slowly to foggy vision. The room was dark now, but she could spot shadows beyond the plastic.
"You're out of your mind! This girl is not worth it! She's of no value to us! She is a burden! There is no cure for what she's got, and you are wasting all our resources!"
With hazy thoughts, Cole sat up and tossed the blanket. She swung her legs over the edge. Breathing feverishly from the small act.
"She's not worth it." Eris repeats, crossing his arms over his chest. Those words stung worse than the physical pain. A horrible ache swells in her chest. Cole watched in silence. Feeling helpless while these doctors were deciding her fate.
"She's weak." Eris bites out. "We could be using resources to help reestablish safe communities. Help the families who really need it..."
"How many patients have we lost?" Vincent was calm as he spoke.
"...Too many" Eris lets out a sigh.
"How many loved ones have we lost?”
Eris looked away, holding his chest as if someone had struck it.
"If we stop trying for a cure, there will never be one." Vincent continued. "Those safe communities will crumble like all the rest. Medicine will run dry... More death-h…"
Vincent let out a shivered breath, his eyelids closing while his body began to tilt.
"Vin?" Eris barely caught him as Vincent collapsed. Cole sprung from her bed, fully awake now as she watched three other shadows rush in and question Eris. "What happened?" The young boy questions as he shook Vincent by the shoulders. "Vin?"
"He's…" Eris hesitated, glancing toward the curtain as if he could sense the patient was awake. "He just needs rest… Been a long day. Help me get him to his room."
Eris lifted him, while the other two got his legs. Cole watched as they carried him away to another part of the house. Cole wasn't sure what part of house they were taking him to, but by the sounds of their retreating footfalls, Cole guessed the home was large. She listened until the footfalls were too far away and began looking around the room. Cole spotted the light switch and turned it on. Bright lights beamed from above as she took in her surroundings. All around the bed was medical equipment and to the left was a table full of clutter. Cole peeked at a duffel bag that was open. Inside it was a change of clothes, a few folders, and a bunch of other things. Cole's gaze drifted elsewhere to a pile of cases; to the right. Then to a door a few paces from the pile. She opened it and found a spacious private bathroom. It was much bigger than the one in her old hospital room.
White and gold. The bathroom floor is shiny white tile with soft rugs placed in front of the sink, bathtub, shower, and toilet. The walls were white with gold moldings. White cabinets and crystal knobs, with a marble countertop. Cole approached it and felt it with her fingers. She lifted her gaze to a large round mirror with a gold ornate frame. A row of vanity lights gave a warm glow from above. Tears pool in her gray eyes as she stares in the mirror.
Wild cedar hair falls around her small face. She was thin and weak, barely filling the shirt that covered her body. Cole's complexion was an unhealthy pale. This was not shocking since Cole couldn’t recall the memories before the years of isolation. Gaunt cheeks, dry lips and skin. Even if there was a cure tomorrow, Cole knew her weak heart wouldn’t last. The only person that could get her through it was Oliver… He made the time go by. Cheered her up when she felt hopeless… Now there's only strangers.
"Cole…" A tap on the door makes her turn around. The young boy stood there, his brown eyes shimmer with emotion… Perhaps worry for his friend. He was slightly taller than Cole, but shorter than the other men and less muscular. Youthful brown skin like honey and peanut butter. Innocent round eyes that shift nervously with indecision. A boyish face that Cole found adorable as a baby fox. He was thin and wore loose clothes. His shoulder-length hair is kept in a low ponytail; while loose pieces dangle around his face.
"These are clean." He held up a folded stack of clothes. "I'm going to put them away for you."
"Thank you." Cole's voice came out gentle and hushed.
The young boy added the clean clothes to a tall cabinet. Afterward, he leaves the bathroom and softly closes the door.
Cole took a clean gown and changed. Tossing the old one which was stained. She carefully slips into the new one. Minding her left shoulder as she does. The pain was barely there, and she guessed the doctor had given her something for it. Cole cleaned her face and left the bathroom. Stopping when she closed the door behind her.
Cole's gray eyes widen as a tall shadow appears near the bedroom window. A startled gasp left her lips and she tensed. Fear filled her core. Cole kept her gaze fixed on the window. Unable to tell who was lingering outside. All at once, Cole felt a rush of heat to her head as her heartbeat struggled in her chest. "S-Somebody." She tries to speak, but her voice is a hoarse whisper. The more she tried, the harder it was to breathe. Rapid breaths huff through her lips. A crushing pain grows within her chest. "Help…" Cole tries to scream again, while her mind relives the trauma. The shadow, a crash, glass raining down…
Spots enter the corners of her vision as she opens the bathroom door. A moan escaped her lips as a sting of pain shoots through her body when she steps. Cole's grip slips from the knob, then everything goes dark.
"Cole?" A voice echoes in the darkness of her mind. Slowly luring her back to consciousness. Cole opens her eyes partway to see a worried young boy. Leaning over her with a plastic rod in his hand. He pokes at her thigh, as if she were a possum on a road. Checking to see if she was alive."Hey. Can you hear me?"The patient tilts her head. Through foggy vision, she spots another entering."What the fuck happened, Tuck?" Eris says when he sees the patient."I don't know, doc. I just found her, I swear." Tuck says."Fuck, I don’t need this right now." She hears Eris grumble while he steps away. Cole thought both of them were going to leave, when he re-entered the bathroom with a pink throw blanket. "Hey kid." Eris speaks softly, despite the clear annoyance in his gaze. "Let me help you up."Cole's gray eyes peek to see Eris extend his arm toward her. His tall frame shadows Cole's smaller form as her eyes fill with dread. Cole's heart beats out of control as he nears. Reeling to the surfa
"She's asleep..." Vincent whispers to a curious Eris, who re-entered the room with a tray of food.“Great", Eris sighs, "An hour in the kitchen and two flights of stairs...""Guess there'll be leftovers". Vincent whispers as he tucks in the patient. Carefully gathering her long hair with his hands, before slipping on a hair tie. This allowed him more access to her neck as he wipes away the perspiration on her pale skin with a clean towel. "She's got a temperature of 110." He tells Eris, wiping sweat from her face as well."Infection?" Eris wonders."It's too early to tell. For now, let's let her sleep." Vincent decides. The pair exit the bedroom, turning off lights as they went, and washing up in an adjacent room. A single bedroom made into two… Modified to fit the living requirements of a fragile patient and prevent the risks of a domestic outbreak. Time passes as the pair vigorously clean and prep for the next day.Only when they part from the purgative room and enter the hall, do th
Cole wakes, tossing the covers as she sits up. Pulse wild, as her gray eyes scan the pitch-black room. Fresh sweat leaks down her forehead. Rolling down the curve of her neck and soaking into the collar of her gown. She lifts her right arm, trying to locate the bedside lamp when the noise comes again.Bang! She jolts in her spot, and immediately recognizes the noise as a gunshot. This time there was no mistaking it.Dread pours over her body. Flooding to the tips of her fingers and toes. She trembled uncontrollably, her gray eyes watering as she could not think of what to do."Oh… Oh please God not again… not again…" she shivers.Cole stayed put for the duration of the silence that followed. Until a multitude of footfalls echo past her bedroom. She finally slipped from bed. Slipping down to the cool tiled floor. Cole shifted her gaze toward the bedroom window. Observing the ray of pale moonlight that filled a spot on the floor. Then to the right of it. She could faintly see the pile of
Eris's voice comes from Vincent's radio, as he chats something in his native language. Cole listened curiously as Vincent responded, chatting back and forth until Eris finished. Saying: "Obrigado.""You're so quiet…" Vincent observes, while he carefully wraps her shoulder with new bandages. "Are you in any pain?" He wondered. A look of concern surfacing in his green eyes again. Cole secretly thought his round eyes resembled a timid stray pup.How can a grown man look so… adorable? She stares senselessly into the pair of eyes. Growing fond of the lush green in them."Cole?" Vincent blinks nervously as he stops what he's doing. "I want to know what's going on", he whispers, "but… it's kinda hard when you don't talk."Cole shifted her gaze at last. Pretending to find the bathroom floor interesting, before she comes up with an answer."Um… you're so different from Isla… More…" Cole struggles when the heat rises to her cheeks."More… what?" Vincent's voice was gentle as he waited for her to
"I- I am wearing gl-gloves." Cole barely manages to get out. Rambling: "It's only cards. Tuck assured me they were sterile. He even brought me this bed-tray, so nothing touched the sheets…"Vincent looks at his patient in silence. Shifting his gaze to the cards, which were set on a firm bed table, and Cole was indeed wearing latex gloves too…With a deep breath, Vincent set the food aside. "Alright…" He speaks softly, the crease between his brows slowly disappears as he nears. "Let me take that so you can have your meal."Cole glanced one last time, then set the cards down. The doctor seemed calm… at least that's how he appeared."Leave the gloves too." Vincent points with his eyes, to which Cole understood and discarded them. She watched as Doctor Lance took the table and set it with the other items. Then he brought her the food, carefully putting it where she could reach. "It’s not a five-star meal so… if you don't like it, don't eat it." He says, turning to pull out his kit.Cole im
Before the sun rose, Eris was up.He sat in his office. Eyes glued to a document he was reading. While he scribbled notes with his other hand. Listing all of Cole's past symptoms and the recurrences of them. Afterwards, Eris researched the incident reports written by Rue. He listed those by date and a brief description of the incident. Next, Eris looked through the patient's lab results. And finally, he reviewed Cole's cognitive tests. This captured his interest, as Cole never suffered the severe symptoms."She's strong, she wants to live." Doctor Isla says on a recorded log. Which Eris played out of curiosity. The conference video showed Doctor Isla in plain clothes. She was sitting in her own living room, while talking to an interviewer. Other unnamed individuals were a part of the virtual conference, but only their names appeared below."When you first encountered Miss Peters, what made you do it? What were your thoughts when you took her in?" An interviewer asks."She needs my help
Resting on a gurney, Cole stares mindlessly at the ceiling. She hardly notices as it begins to move. A mysterious figure transports her through a hospital corridor. The halls are eerily silent, save the sound of squeaking wheels. Cole peeks to her left where there are doors. Each one they pass has numbers. Cole memorized them. She knew each number identified a patient. Transparent glass allows a view inside each unit. Some patients sleep, while others pace restlessly within the 30x30 unit. Anxious to get out. Cole was familiar with that feeling. She turns her head away, just as a patient starts heaving. Instead, Cole occupies her thoughts with the view of the night. To her right, pristine full pane windows stretch the hall. A dark silhouette of the city lies beneath a starry sky. Not a spec of light shows from the buildings. All were abandoned and Cole knew it…So why did it always feel like they were being watched?"It's your birthday…" The mysterious nurse speaks. A sharp gasp came f
Another golden sunset glows on the horizon, and the household quiets with dusk. Vincent stood with an accomplished sigh and watched the Betta fish wiggle within its new home. A mini aquarium Tuck looted from an abandoned pet store, glows blue with an LED. Its home rests on a nightstand, where Cole can greet him when she wakes…"What happened here?" Eris questions as he enters wearing a uniform this time."Showing up late again… Your neck must hurt." Vincent flashes a knowing smirk while looking pointedly at the area. Where Eris's skin shows a mix of pink and red marks."Ay, my future wife is claiming her turf…" Eris answers and glances to his tablet to check something. "Signs of distress from earlier." He says while reading. "Was it a spider this time? Or did you finally tell her marshmallows went extinct 9 years ago?""No…" Vincent smiles, remembering the list of his patients' favorite foods. "She doesn't know about that, and…" Vincent looks at the mini aquarium again. "He happened ea
"Uh..." A long, dramatic groan fills the car as Vincent focuses intently on the road. He reaches for his water bottle, only to discover it’s empty. With a resigned sigh, he mutters, “Tuck, I thought you had your own bottle.” Tuck, slumped in his seat, replies with a strained voice, “Well, I ran out.” He shifts uncomfortably, his grimace deepening. “Oh...” His voice trails off into another groan. “Can we please pull over?” Vincent glances at the road sign, noting that Atlanta is just seven miles ahead. “We’re almost there. It’s just a bit further.” “I can’t make it that long,” Tuck pleads, his face contorted in pain. “Please, pull over.” Vincent’s gaze shifts to Tuck, who is clutching his stomach and visibly struggling. As the sun dips towards the horizon, Vincent realizes that driving any further could be dangerous, especially with the encroaching darkness. He weighs the urgency of Tuck’s condition against the need to continue driving. Finally, he clicks on the radio. “Doc t
Cole is lost in thought, zoning out as the van rolls along. The steady hum of the engine and the monotony of the scenery outside can be hypnotic. When the van finally comes to a stop, it's a small jolt that snaps her back to the present. She stretches and looks around, wondering where they are now. She watches as trucks fill a motel lot. Soldiers wander masking up before checking every room. Cole felt nervous, remembering the nightmare she had, discovering that the driver was not her real driver. It all seemed so real, until she woke up. Eventually, the team camped for the night. Most slept in their cars, while others stayed awake. Cole guessed they were keeping watch. The soldiers seemed to enjoy the cool night as they strolled in groups of twos, walking the stretch of the lot. Her driver, Doug, disappeared somewhere. Cole was suspicious, but she guessed he didn't want to sleep in the van. The night passes while Cole fails to sleep. Tossing and turning in the back of the van.
(6 hours after departure)Cole wakes in the backseat of the van, and immediately starts mentally obsessing on the driver. Percieving a partial reflection of his face in the rearview mirror. He wore a mask like everyone else, and remained silent while behind the wheel.Uncertainty shimmers in her gray eyes as she eyes his snow white hair."It was a dream," Cole finally realizes as the fog of drowsiness lifts from her head. She dreamt it all, the kidnapper, the blood, the gunshots...Cole couldn't remember the last time she had a 'good' dream. She took a couple deep breaths and sat up straighter. Hearing Tuck's voice call over the radio. "Hey Cole, there's a button on the left side of your helmet" He informs.Cole feels with her fingers until she finds it, then presses it. When she does, the helmet loosens and she was able to remove it. "Thank you, Tuck" Cole breathes in relief as she frees her head. Just in time when her watch beeps. She smiled as she remembered Eris set it to remind he
(April 10, 2054) Year of OutbreakCurled up in front of a tv, little Cole eats her breakfast. A cartoon about a tiger cub plays. Until Cole's father interrupts and turns it off. "Come on, Coco, I have to take you to school." He says, grabbing his keys and coat when a shout comes from upstairs. Followed by the loud footfalls of someone coming downstairs."Dad!" Rosalie shouts, she's wearing her school uniform with her dark hair tied up. Holding her smartphone as she rushes to turn on the tv. "Did you see the news?""No." He answers while helping little Cole with her shoes. "Rose we can see it later. We have to go.""N-No, Dad look." She urges, switching the channel. The news report shows Rosalie's gym teacher passed away from Malum 2. "Sixteen students have recently been hospitalized. The High School will be closed. It's recommended that students and their households quarantine until further notice." The news report concludes."I guess we're staying home…" Dad sighs, taking off Cole's
Two days pass on the road to West Virginia. Vincent follows the guiding Humvee in front him as he grips the steering wheel. With Tuck sound asleep in the passenger seat. He fell asleep to the loud hum of the truck's engine. A collection of steel cases are strapped in the truck bed. The sky above is darkened by clouds that seem to roll endlessly. They flicker with lightning and echo with soft rumbles. Eventually, the rain starts to pour. Gentle drops sprinkle all over, becoming larger and larger. Until a heavy pour soaks the road. Beating loudly on the windows and body of the truck. The collection of raindrops sound like microwaved popcorn. Windshield wipers swipe left and right. Allowing glimpses of the road. Vincent squints his eyes as he looks ahead."More rain?" Tuck sits up straight with a yawn. The rumble of thunder was enough to stir him from sleep."Ugh, I have to pee." Tuck groans as he ties his hair into a ponytail."We have a few miles before the next stop. With any luck, th
Cole rose from her bed. The sun had not yet risen. The bedroom is pitch black and silent. Apart from the soft tweets of birds that echo as the dawn approaches. Cole sits up anxiously and stares at nothing while twirling the end of her braid with her finger. Lost in her own thoughts, she didn’t hear when the bedroom door was opened.Only when the lights flick on, Cole snaps her gaze toward the entrance. There stood a figure suited in black, holding a bag in his left hand. “Hey Cole.” Tuck hesitates but nears her bed anyway.Cole watches as he set the bag down and unpacked its contents. He spreads each item on the white bed sheet. She stares at the strange outfits and mask. One outfit was black thermal with a hood to it. While the second was some kind of astronaut suit?“You’re going to have to change into this… Doctor’s orders.” Tuck explains. “This thermal one might be a little loose. I modified it to unzip in the back and the pant legs too. I have plenty of socks for you and gloves. T
"Cole. I need you to listen." Vincent tries to speak, but Cole was already on the verge of tears."You can't know that. I'm not going. Vin, I'm not going." Cole dodges his reach when he gets too close."Cole, I need you to put this on." Vincent sighs, growing impatient as he holds onto a suit meant for the patient."No. I don't need that cause I'm not going.""Cole, if we stay here you won't survive." Vincent finally says. "The people that attacked us took supplies. Some of them are damaged… We can't care for you properly if we don't have what we need."Cole fell silent while she processed it all. "I can’t go" She shakes her head, stepping back again when he stepped forward.“I won’t go”. Cole shivers out, emotions swirling in her dark gray eyes. “I won’t go” she repeats in a firmer tone."Cole." Vincent gave a warning tone. A tense look on his face as he stares at his patient. He steps forward, while Cole takes a step backward. Losing her balance when the back of her leg bumps the bed
After years of isolation, Cole got used to sleeping alone. Now there was someone snuggling her like a mama cat.It felt good.Safe…Vincent continued this every night, until the power was restored. The next few days felt like a month. Salvaging parts, fixing the power, doors repaired, broken windows boarded, and damaged walls patched. Cole was resting, Tuck was ordered to go scouting with a separate team. All while Vincent and Eris were summoned to the training room. They faced a restless 'Natalie' who was determined to train them harder. Both Eris and Vincent were back in training with Lieutenant Natalie Yuki. She went over close combat, weapon assembly, all types of potential escape routes and vulnerable points within the house. Plus, how to store explosives to keep from blowing the whole house up."I think I remember why… I chose to go to med-school…" Eris pants, laying on the training room floor. Right next to Vincent, who got tossed out of the ring as well by Natalie's best soldie
"I…" Cole blinked nervously, looking down at her hands in shame. Even though Vincent showed no sign of anger. "I think I overslept."Vincent was quiet and had an air of calm surrounding him. His seated form shadowed hers. Vincent was wearing a pair of dark blue trousers and the protective mask covering his face. Seeing he was shirtless and with wild hair of his own. Cole guessed he rolled out of bed and slipped on a mask. It wasn't proper protection, but Vincent did not seem to care."Vin, if you get sick, I'll never forgive myself". Cole spoke, peeking up at him. "You should go put s-something else on".Vincent took a deep breath, letting it out slowly as he extended his other arm. Reaching, he cups her chin in his hand and brings her gaze to his again. "There are worse things to die from…" He says, chewing on his lip as a thought crossed his mind. Cole read the look in his green eyes as they traveled to the bruises on the side of her face. Pain surfaced in them, darkening the light i
