“Do I?” I asked hoping that he could say more.
“Yes, it's my wife. But she's gone now. She left without a word, I've waited for her to return but it's been four years, she hasn't returned. I guess she's moved on…”
I could feel the pain in him at that moment. I wanted to say something but he just cut me short. “Inform Mrs Dorathy that the event plans should begin,”
“Okay, Sir” I responded but I continued standing there as if I wanted him to say something else. I miss my husband, I thought of collapsing, so that he could hold me closely, and that I could feel the warmth of his touch.
“Hey maid, would you get out already?” He said but I was so deep in my thoughts that I couldn't hear him. He moved closer and tapped me on my shoulders.
“Get out!” He ordered. “How do you attend to your duties in this manner?” Those words were hurtful but I had to leave with tears in my eyes. If only he knew I was his woman.
I informed Mrs Dorathy of his message and then I moved on with my duties. The turning point came one evening. Henry was hosting an event, it was one of those celebrations where the entire staff was engaged in a lot of activities. I was assigned to serve in the main hall, my presence as a maid ensured I would remain unnoticed amidst the crowd.
As the evening wore on, I caught glimpses of Henry, moving through the guests with ease. He seemed to be at ease,a lady followed him about but I guess that was his secretary, Olivia. Although he seemed to be happy, I knew him well enough to see the strain behind his smiles and the emptiness in his eyes.
As I refilled glasses and cleared plates, I overheard snippets of conversations that made me feel included, although the conversations were different from my world but there was this flow that I got caught up in. Just when I thought I had escaped that night, I heard a name that sent a chill down my spine.
"Nina Windsor," a woman said with hatred in her voice. "She left poor Henry without a word. I wonder where she is now . She must be living a disgraceful life."
My hands trembled, and I forced myself to focus. Immediately I served her table, I left to let my emotions flow. I heard footsteps behind me and Immediately composed myself. I turned to face Maria, a smile was all over her and wondered what could have prompted it.
“Did you hear?" Maria’s voice cut through my thoughts as we prepared to take some snacks to the guests in the hall.
"Hear what?" I asked, trying to sound as if I cared to listen as I arranged the trays.
Mr. Windsor is going on a date tonight," she said, her eyes widening with the excitement of a shared gossip. "With Miss Olivia Caldwell. Apparently, she's quite the new catch."
My heart tightened at her words, and I struggled to keep my expression neutral. "Olivia Caldwell?" I repeated, the name was familiar and it was already feeling like a dagger in my chest. Olivia is my husband's secretary, why is he going out with her? Of all the ladies in the city, he chose Olivia? Well, Olivia was one reason I made a decision to return. By the time I'm ready, I'll give her a taste of the drink she served me. “But why?” I managed to ask Maria
Maria nodded, her voice lowering to a conspiratorial whisper. "Yes, she's from a wealthy family. She's Beautiful, charming, intelligent and she has everything Mr Henry likes in a woman." She paused, and turned to face me . "Are you okay, Nina?"
I forced a smile, even as my heart shattered. "Of course. Why wouldn't I be?"
But the truth was, I wasn't okay. The thought of Henry with another woman, moving on from our broken past, filled me with a deep, painful jealousy. I had no right to feel this way, I reminded myself. I had left him, after all. But knowing that didn't make the pain any less.
I forced a smile, trying to hide my pain. "That's good for him. He deserves to be happy."
But as Maria walked away, the reality of the situation sank in. Henry was moving on with someone, while I remained trapped in the past.
That same evening, we were engaged with preparations for Henry's date. Again, I was assigned to set the dining room table. Mrs Dorathy meant to deal with me, I guess. Why was she always setting me up with my husband? Was it fate or her way of revenge on me?
My hands trembled as I arranged the table. As I did, I was reminded of the life I once led, the life that now seemed like a nightmare.
As I placed the last fork, the doorbell rang, and the butler announced Olivia's arrival. I took a deep breath, I would have to watch Henry and Olivia together, serving them as if I were nothing more than a faceless servant.
Olivia was even more stunning in person. She was tall and curvy, with golden hair and a radiant smile. She moved with the confidence of someone who had never known hardship. Henry greeted her warmly, his eyes lighting up in a way that made my heart ache.
"Olivia, it's so good to see you," he said, taking her hand and leading her to the table.
"Henry, thank you for inviting me,I wonder why you didn't postpone our date, you just finished an event and here we are" she replied, her voice smooth and cultured. “Well, this place is magnificent."
As they sat down to dine, I kept my eyes lowered, focusing on my duties. I poured the wine, served the first round, and tried to remain invisible. But each laugh, each lingering glance between them, felt like a knife to my heart.
"You have such a great taste," Olivia remarked, her eyes sparkling as she looked around the room. "Everything here is so elegant."
"Thank you," Henry replied, with a hint of pride in his voice. "It's all thanks to my late wife, Nina. She had a remarkable eye for design."
My hands trembled as I poured their drinks, the mention of my name sending a shiver down my spine. Olivia's expression softened, and I could notice a note of sympathy in her gaze.
"She must have been very special," she said gently.
"She was," Henry agreed, his voice tinged with sorrow. "I miss her every day, if not for death..."
I sneezed at once, this made me hurriedly run out. Henry now addresses me as a dead woman all because he wants to move on. I shut the door of the kitchen and bent down in tears. “I couldn't take this any longer.” I muttered to myself, then I rose up.
“I deserve to be happy, but this is just too unbearable.” I muttered as I walked to the servants' quarters. I didn't care what Henry would say for leaving without his permission. “He should get lost for all I care” I said again before entering my corner at the quarters. I sat on my bed and I allowed my emotions to finally spill over. Maria walked in to see me there, with tears streaming down my face."Nina," she called softly. She sat beside me and wrapped her arms around my shoulders. "I knew this would happen. I'm so sorry you're going through this.""You don't have to be sorry. I thought I could handle it," I whispered, but my voice was choked with sobs. "But seeing him with her... it's too much."Maria drew me close, and comforted me as I cried. My secrets and the burden of my past felt heavier than ever. I knew I couldn't go on like this, I couldn't continue to be torn between love and duty, neither between my past and present. But do those decisions of mine truly matter?Well, l
Charles' eyes widened in shock, and he leaned back in his chair, I guess he was trying to look at Nina in front of him. "Nina, this is... I don't even know where to start. What happened to you? When did you arrive in town? Why didn't you tell Henry you're back?” His questions made my sight blurTears welled up in my eyes as I told him about the events that had led to my departure and my subsequent return under a false identity. When I finished, Charles sat in silence, with his eyes filled with compassion. "I can't believe it," he said finally. "Nina, Why didn't you come to me earlier?""I was afraid," I admitted, my voice choking with tears. "Afraid of what Henry would think, of how he would react. But now, I have to protect him and my kids. Olivia is planning something, and I can't stand by and do nothing."Charles nodded, "I can see that you still love him, but that's by the side. What do you need from me, Nina?""I need your advice and help. I can't handle this alone," I replied.
As much as I knew Charles wanted us to reconcile, I couldn't let that happen now. It was too soon. I had to act quickly to prevent my identity from being revealed. I walked out of the kitchen with a tray of juice, and let the tray fall. The sound of broken glasses made them turn to face me.Perfect distraction for my lady, she turned. “You've always been incompetent. Besides, who asked you to intrude? I wonder what Henry is still doing with you in this house.”"Why not answer to your misdeeds instead of focusing on my fault!" I exclaimed, as I bent to clean up the mess.Everyone turned to look at me in surprise, I guess they were startled by my sudden outburst. I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. This gave me the opportunity to give Charles a signal not to do it yet.“Henry “, I understand this is a lot to take in, but we need to look at the facts. Olivia, if you truly care about Henry, you should explain yourself."Olivia's eyes flashed with anger, but she composed hers
The next day, as I got prepared for the day's duties, I overheard my name on everyone's lips. “She must really like our boss,” someone said. “Not just that, she has some kind of rare boldness, who would dare to face madame Olivia, well I'm just glad that she's gone for good.”I smiled unconsciously when I heard those words. Olivia has been a terror to all the maids, she treated us with so much hatred, but now we’re free. Although I felt for my husband, I'm glad she's left him.As I stepped out of my room, my eyes met with Maria, “The ever bold lady” she teased me, but I gave her a signal to bring down her voice. I dragged her Into my room with care. “Listen, Maria. Nobody must know who I am. It's not yet time to reveal my Identity.”I told her.“Reveal what identity?” Maria asked me. Nina, most times I just feel you're wasting time. Walk up to him and speak up or do you want me to tell him, myself? I'd be glad to do that for free.”“No, my dear. Do not tell him. I’ll tell him myself. F
Sophie and his brother walked into the staff quarters. I guess they were looking for Mrs Dorathy. Hand in hand they walked into her room. I took this opportunity to see my kids and hear their voices more closely.“Mrs Dorathy!” Sophie screamed as she ran Into the open arms of Mrs Dorathy. “You aren't getting younger but you still look young.” Sophie teased her as she planted a soft kiss on her cheek.“I can't believe you are here again for the short holiday, '' Mrs Dorathy responded as she observed both kids. James was totally off from whatsoever they were doing. “Hey James. How’re you doing?” Mrs Dorathy asked but my daughter immediately responded. “That's how he behaves, he has never changed. He is still a mummy's boy and there's no mummy. I've told him to be a daddy's boy but…”Mrs Dorathy immediately cut in. “That's enough, James didn't say anything and it's not right if you respond on his behalf.” “But I still miss my mummy,” James said but not in a sad mood.“Ugh… Mummy would d
I walked into my room that night with excitement of being with my kids without any interference. The next day I woke up with quiet joy. I made sure that I did all I was assigned to before evening. I spent the evenings tutoring Sophie and James, helping them with some holiday work and sharing stories from my own childhood. The bond between us grew stronger, and I felt a glimmer of hope that one day, I could reveal the truth to them. This exciting time went on for days. One evening as we were about finishing up a lesson, Sophie looked at me with a thoughtful expression. "Aunt Nina, you remind me of someone I long to see. She’s someone from a long time ago, yeah, a long time ago."“A long time ago?” I asked her again. I Was already aware of what she was about to say.“Yes, a long time. It's four years now and I haven't seen her. I really miss her.” She said as her face dropped. My heart skipped a beat. "Oh? Who do I remind you of, my dear, Sophie?"She raised her head, her eyes searching
I bowed my head in confusion, not knowing exactly how to answer for what I have just done. I stood up at once to greet him. “Good evening, Mr Windsor”He stepped in and shut the door behind him. “Good evening, Nina.” He said but I had a lot on my mind at the moment that I didn't hear him“Nina?” he whispered, his voice barely audible. “What are you doing here by this time?”I quickly closed the book and took a step backwards, my mind searching for a perfect excuse that would fit the moment, but guess what? My mind was blank so I decided to answer with any word that would come out from my mouth. “I…was passing…but the door was slightly ajar.. I thought they might like a bedtime story, that's why I walked in.” I stammered. “It’s something my mother did for us when we were younger, so I thought I should do the same for them”Henry’s eyes softened, and he nodded slowly. At this point, I heaved a sigh of relief “I see.” He added. “They seem to enjoy it.”I forced a smile but my heart was p
“I just lost the opportunity of revealing my identity. He was ready to listen to whatever I had to say at that point. What was I thinking” I asked as I lay on my bed. Just then Maria walked in with a smile on her face.“Hey darling,” she called me. “Hi” I responded as I rose up. “Why does your face look as if the world is upon you.” She asked me, getting closer to look into my eyes if there were tears.“I had the chance to tell Henry who I was but I didn't Know what came over me.” I responded with a shaky voice.“You don't have to feel bad about it, besides, you can do it tomorrow, If you want. Don't forget that I'll always be here in every step you take.” I leaned forward to hug Maria. “You're just the best. Thank you for being my source of strength, Maria. I love you so much.”With that assurance, I had peace of mind for the first time since my kids Left. The following morning, I woke up with the excitement of reconciliation. I wore my best threaded servant's clothes. “Today is
Marcus lay on the cold, concrete floor, in the ocean of his blood, his breath came in ragged gasps. His once confident, domineering presence was now reduced to a pitiful, broken man struggling to fight for his life. Kelly stood over him, with the gun still trembling in her hand. The shock of what she had just done was written all over her.Marcus’s eyes, once filled with cold calculation, now held a flicker of disappointment, anger, and perhaps even a trace of betrayal. He coughed, and the movement sent a fresh wave of pain through his body, he stretched his hand out toward Kelly, but his fingers wavered as if trying to grasp something just out of reach.“Kelly,” Marcus whispered. “Why…why did you do this? I thought…we were on the same side. I thought we agreed… to get revenge.”Kelly’s lips shook as she looked down at him, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. The man lying before her was a shadow of the person she had once known, the man who had manipulated her, twisted her emotions,
The door finally creaked open, and the sound echoed through the warehouse like a gunshot. Nina’s breath caught in her throat as Marcus walked in with Nurse Kelly. The sight of her sent a wave of shock through the room, the collective gasps of everyone echoed in the silence. Kelly’s presence was unexpected, and for a brief moment, everyone seemed frozen in place, as their minds struggled to process this new development.Nina’s eyes locked onto Kelly’s, searching for some sign of what was going to happen next. On the other hand, Kelly’s expression was unreadable. But there was a look in her eyes that sent a chill down Nina’s spine.Marcus stopped in the middle of the room, studying the faces around him with a predatory gaze. He seems to enjoy the fear he saw in their faces. He moved closer to Nina. “I told you, but you wouldn't listen. You wanted to see what I could do. Right?” He asked her as he wiped a tear from her eyes.“See what you’ve caused. Everyone is in a mess because of you.
Inside the cold warehouse, the air was thick with tension. Nina sat bound to a chair. She watched the movement of Marcus in fear. After some time of pacing around, he stood before her with a twisted smile on his face. The sight of him made her blood boil, but she knew she had to keep her composure. Any sign of disobedience could set him off, and the last thing she wanted was to put her family in more danger. He leaned forward to kiss her, but she quickly turned her face.Marcus had been making jest of her for what felt like hours. Every now and then, he would lean in close, his breath hot against her ear as he whispered threats.“You’re so predictable, Nina,” Marcus sneered, pacing back and forth in front of her. “You’re always trying to be the hero, always thinking you can outsmart me. But look where that’s gotten you. Tied up and at my mercy. I thought you’d recognise me when I came, but No!. Can't you see that you're dumb?”Nina’s jaw clenched as she fought the urge to spit in his
Henry's heart pounded as he drove towards the east of the town. He called Olivia to ensure that they were safe while he also informed them about his movements, his thoughts were consumed with fear and anger. “Please be safe out there.” Olivia managed to say.“Sure, be more vigilant as well.” Henry said as dropped the phone. The lead he had just received from Maria felt promising, but he couldn't shake the fear that something terrible might happen to Nina before he could reach her. The idea of Marcus holding her captive, possibly harming her, made Henry's blood boil. He gripped the steering wheel tightly, as he sped down the road. The sudden ring of his phone startled him. He quickly glanced at the caller ID and felt a cold chill run down his spine. It was Marcus. “My goodness!” He exclaimed loudly as he pulled by the road.Henry hesitated for just a moment before answering, trying to prepare his mind for whatever twisted words would come through the line."Henry," Marcus’s voice came
"Doctor?" Nina said, her voice tinged with confusion. "Why didn't you inform us that you were coming? We weren’t expecting you at all."The doctor didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he stepped closer, his eyes fixed on her in a way that sent a chill down her spine. Before she could react, he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a gun. Nina's heart stopped, and she took a step back, fear paralyzing her."Don’t be a fool, shut your mouth and get into the car," he ordered, his voice cold and unfamiliar. It was then that she noticed something else, his face wasn’t right. The more she looked at him, the more she realized this wasn’t the doctor. His eyes were different Then, with a swift movement, he ripped off what she now saw was a mask, revealing his true face.It was Marcus.Nina’s blood ran cold as she recognized him. His face looked more cruel than before, and his eyes were filled with malice. She tried to scream, but no sound came out. Instead, she found herself frozen on th
“Take it here, and drop it there.” Nina said as she held her husband closely.“We’re doing it, my darling.” Henry told his wife. “I can't wait to start life again with you.Just then, Henry’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He glanced at the screen and saw Kelly’s name flashing. He tapped the screen and put it on speaker. “Henry, listen to me,” Kelly’s voice was urgent, filled with fear. “Don’t go anywhere. Marcus is out there. I just saw him, he looked like he was heading to your house. And I'm very sure he’s planning something.”Marcus had instructed Kelly to call him so that they would be able to know their new location.Henry exchanged a look with Nina, as his heart was pounding. “We need to stay back,” he said, his voice tight with urgency.“Oh my!” What's all these? She asked as she ran outside to alert everyone.“Get inside, now,” Nina ordered, ushering everyone back into the house. They moved quickly. Inside, they locked the doors and pulled the curtains shut. Henry’s mind raced
Kelly looked around in fear as she tried to find her way out of the strange environment. Her heart pounded in her chest with every step she took. She knew Marcus’s men were around, but she had to take the chance. She moved quietly, trying to find an escape route. Just as she thought she was close to a lonely road, Marcus suddenly appeared in front of her."Where do you think you're going, Kelly?" Marcus's voice was low and demeaning.Kelly got startled. She tried to back away, but Marcus stepped closer, his eyes were cold and calculating. "Why are you trying to escape?" he asked, his tone threatening. "Don't you think you are putting yourself in more danger? Hey my darling Kelly, No one leaves under my custody."Kelly swallowed hard, trying to muster her courage but his cold laughter made her angry. She raised her hand to give him a slap but Marcus prevented it quickly and resumed laughing at her in a mocking tone.Kelly felt helpless, she fell on her knees and tears started dropping
Henry knew they were playing a more dangerous game so he decided to get started on the difficult task of processing their visas to leave the country. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but it was their best chance at escaping the clutches of Marcus and Kelly. He made secret calls and filled out the necessary documents, all while keeping a watchful eye on his family.Meanwhile, Marcus grew increasingly desperate and angry. He started calling Clarissa, Nina, and Henry relentlessly, hoping to instill fear and make them slip up. But Henry and Nina had already decided to ignore his calls, understanding that engaging with him would only make matters worse. Clarissa, however, answered one of his calls out of frustration and a desire to confront him."Hello?" Clarissa said, her voice trembling slightly."Clarissa, it's Marcus," came the cold, familiar voice. "You thought you could run away and hide?""I’m not hiding, Marcus," Clarissa retorted. "I’m trying to live my life without your threats."“Ar
Nina held Henry's hand firmly, not wanting him to move an inch. “Henry, please I beg you. Don't go.”“Nina just hold on.” He whispered softly. Henry gave a signal for Clarissa to take the kids to their rooms while he took the next step.Henry glanced through the peephole cautiously. When he recognized the man standing outside, he breathed a slight sigh of relief. It was their neighbor, Mr. Thompson, who lived just three houses down. Henry opened the door slowly, ensuring there were no unexpected surprises waiting behind the familiar face. He wondered what had brought him here, his family just moved here and they barely go out."Good evening, Mr. Thompson," Henry greeted, attempting to hide the unease in his voice."Evening, Henry," Mr. Thompson replied, stepping inside quickly. "I hope everything is going smoothly?”“Sure,” he responded with a nod.“I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but some people were asking about you and your family, they had your pictures with them too. But the
