Scarlett's mouth dropped, and her eyes widened. She needed no one to tell her, her eyes were reddened, and her tear watered.
She felt as though her feet froze and she was struck right in the chest with a dagger."Lucas!" Daphne admonished."I said I do not want her, and that's final!" Lucas blurted and turned towards the door for an exit with both hands In his pocket.Followed by a sigh, Daphne shot Scarlett an apologetic look. "Please Scarlett, I'll be back."Right there in the study, Scarlett was still frozen, she felt as though life had been taken out of her. Above all her rejections, she could tell this is the first time she felt lifeless after being rejected.Instantly, Scarlett prayed the ground splits and she falls into it. She had her fist tightened as she thought. The jerk didn't bother taking a second glance at her, before the dismissal.Who the hell did he think he was? She howled inwardly. From the study room where she was, she could hear the muffling sound of Lucas's argument with Daphne down the hallway. The study was just close to the hallway, so Scarlett could easily tell what was being spoken about her."What the hell is wrong with you Lucas? It took me such a long time before I got somebody perfect for the kids, but now Lucas… you are about screwing that up." Daphne yelled at her brother, as her tone dripped with frustration and anger."I don't care, Daphne, there are thousands of people out there waiting to get this opportunity, find them!" He paused and spoke softly. "You see, I don't like her, Daphne. Read my lips, I don't like her.""Lucas!" Daphne scolded. "It took me days to find a perfect nanny like her.""I don't care, Daphne, you will get another. Just get that piece of shit out of my house, I can't stand her." Lucas growled."What! Piece of shit?" Just that word stood right in Scarlett's head. She needed to take a second glance at herself to be sure there was no shit on her.The more the word rang In her head, the angrier she got. "This is the height of it, that jerk knew me from nowhere, and he has the gut to spill such terrific words towards me."Hurriedly, Scarlett picked up her bag and headed towards the door. It only pained her that she wouldn't meet the kids once more before she left. She dashed out of the study and walked past all rooms until she did reach where they stood arguing."I'm serious Daphne, nothing you say would make me retreat on my words. Go in there and show her the way out." Lucas insisted."Never mind, I gladly would leave without being shown the way," Scarlett said to startle both of them.Daphne was startled and felt sorry, but Lucas had no remorseful reaction, he merely tilted his gaze sideways with a deepened frown.Daphne's apologetic expression was soon replaced by embarrassment, while Lucas felt nothing out of being remorseful. She was prompted to tell him how much of an asshole he was, but she didn't. Adjusted her bag on her shoulders, squared the shoulders, and walked towards the door. "Scarlett, please wait." Daphne cried from where she stood."Let her go, Daphne." That was the last thing Scarlett caught before she pulled the door and walked out.***Scarlett spent the whole evening sulking, that job was the least she banked on right now before the loan sharks would come after her. This was one awful experience she had gone through in a while. For the next week, Scarlett spent her time searching for jobs online, yet all those she could find were either unfavorable, too far, or the employers were just like the arrogant Lucas. She returned to the firm through which she got approval for the nanny's job at Lucas's place. However, she met another rejection. She was told to exercise some patience as the jobs available have been taken. As such, Scarlett spent more time brooding over her current situation. Her phone chimed again after the hundredth time that same day, it was just the caller who she was avoiding.'Daphne.' For the past week, she had sent her apology emails, including that which stated Lucas accepting her on the excuse that the kids were not giving him breathing space. All along Daphne expected a response which Scarlett refused to.One thing Scarlett thought each time she felt like returning, the sound of the incriminating word he used to describe her was still fresh in her memory, such that even if she wanted to go, she found it difficult to.There was nothing as bad as getting your pride hurt. Scarlett had thought on one of those times she received such mail. Not just that alone, Daphne had bugged her with calls, yet Scarlett wasn't responding. This evening she called severally hoping that she would pick up like the other days, but she was wrong Scarlett didn't. Not until now, Scarlett peeked at the caller ID, and the next, she did cut the call. She prepared to sleep, then heard her phone beep. Reluctantly, she checked the content of the message as it read."Can we have lunch together tomorrow?" Scarlett sighed and said. "Perhaps it's preferable to talk physically."***"I'm so glad you agreed to lunch with me." Daphne greeted with a hug and a smile curved across her lips. Whereas Scarlett couldn't wait to tell her the way she felt, she convinced herself that regardless of how sweet or how persuasive Daphne's words were, she would never give in.She waited till their meals were ordered and they started eating. "Scarlett, I'm so sorry about my brother's unruly behavior the previous day." She apologized, breaking the silence."Is he?" Scarlett blustered as she hoped to get a positive response about Lucas being sorry.Daphne held tight to her cutlery in a brief silence then changed her stance. "Scarlett, you know what, I never expected this but the kids are always asking after you every day."Daphne's attitude spoke it all, she could tell that Lucas never felt sorry. A more reason she never would return there, even if she's offered diamonds as pay. Scarlett vowed inwardly."Claire keeps sulking and asking about you Scarlett, she never allows me a bit of rest.""Really!" "Yes Scarlett, even Callan seems to like you, he does so much in bugging my brother about hiring you back." Daphne squeezed Scarlett's hand in hers and said."They need you Scarlett please, the twins need you."A part of Scarlett felt bad for the kids, yet the least she could do was feel sorry for the kids, her happiness comes first."I'm sorry Scarlett, I know how an asshole my brother was to you but please, do reconsider." Daphne pleaded.Slowly, Scarlett took her hands away from Daphne's. "Why not try another nanny, surely there are several young girls and even married women who would want this, why not go for them?"Daphne pleaded further. "Scarlett, trust me even if that was possible, I would still come for you, but it's not. You are the first of all to reach the stage of meeting Lucas. Everyone else is not willing to get committed to the kids.""It's either the kids are too scared of them or they don't even like them."Deep down, Scarlett she was sure the kids had nothing to do with her decision. It was just their dumbass father that ignited the whole mess.To think further, he couldn't at least send a mail stating how sorry he was to have messed her up.One thing was certain and clear to Scarlett, if she ended up working with them without a sincere apology from Lucas, she would end up facing hell.To save Daphne from her pleadings, she needed to say something to appease her. "Give me some time to think about it, I need to get through myself first.""Thanks, Scarlett, you really cannot tell how much this meant to me." Daphne stood up and pulled Scarlett in for a hug as she repeated. "Thanks so much, Scarlett."Scarlett pulled out and said. "I'll call you when I make up my mind."It took Scarlett another week to make her decision, asides from having her pride considered, Daphne had been on her throat, informing her about the kids. Many times, both kids made sure to starve themselves on the account of Scarlett's absence. This and several other unpleasant news reached Scarlett, and at the height of it all, she decided to return.***"Thanks so much for coming Scarlett, you wouldn't know how much this means to me." Daphne pulled her into a tight hug.Scarlett pulled out and said. "Yes Daphne, I only came for the kids, I hope this turns out well?" Scarlett blustered in uncertainty."Trust me, Scarlett, it will, just be reminded you are here for the kids and nothing more…""I hope so, that's if he doesn't get in the way." Daphne planted a kiss on Scarlett's forehead to ease off the tension.Just as she was about to dismiss Scarlett, a maid walked in to relay Lucas's message to see Scarlett."So I guess he is unavoidable," Scarlett said after the maid was gone."Just calm down, I'm very sure he wouldn't talk rashly to you, perhaps he would want to apologize," Daphne said with a smile."I hope so," Scarlett deep sighed, after which she proceeded towards the study room. With each step she made along the hallway, she found herself trembling within, the closer she got the faster her heart raced. In a short while, she was before him. He sat on the black leather chair, with his gaze tightly fixed on his laptop.A different part of Scarlett appreciated his well-defined jaw and curved brows. Deep down she acknowledged how hot he looked, but remembering his previous act, she snapped out of it.It would have been much better if he weren't a jerk. She thought to herself."I'm here, you called for me." She ended up breaking the silence, her gaze fixed on the ground."I'm not a fool, and neither I'm I deaf to notice you." Scarlett clutched tight to the edge of her shirt to compose herself before him.Lucas shifted his gaze from his laptop and stabilized on her. She could feel a pair of eyes glued to her, and that gave her the impression of how much he scrutinized her from her head to her toe."Do you think a shitty thing like you can touch my kids? The whole of you speaks of the slum…""I…," Scarlett proposed to object but he cut her short. "What makes you think a word from a blockhead like you is worth convincing me?"Lucas stood from his seat and strode towards her, he leaned forward and said. "You stink, but a favor I need from you that's if you want this job…"Scarlett's eyes were reddened, her bones tightened all she could feel within her was the heat of anger burning through her.If possible, she wanted to throw a punch into that scandalous mouth of his, and another into his tummy where the stupid words proceeded from.He ended up breaking her thoughts as he resumed. "If you will be taking the job, I have two important rules which you must abide by."He didn't allow her to respond before he began."Rule One! I don't want to see your filthy hands on my kids, make sure you are clean before touching them.""Rule Two! I don't want you close to me. People like you are nothing but gold diggers.""Piece of shit! Daughter of a nobody!" He said softly as he walked back to his seat but Scarlett heard him pretty well. Her eyes welled up with tears, and as much as she fought back the tears, it was visible beneath her lashes. No outsider has ever humiliated and trampled upon her pride this way."So what's your decision? I've made the most important rule. I assure you, you will never find a job to elevate your status like this I'm offering.""Are you taking the job?"It took Scarlett a few moments to get hold of herself, she took in a lot of air into her lungs, pushed down the lump in her throat, and fixed her gaze to that of Lucas.Within those eyeballs of hers were an iota of pain, and embarrassment. She let a few minutes slide by before she said "Yes, I will."THE NEXT DAY…Scarlett was hurt to her bones, but there was nothing anyone could do about those words.Every single moment, she tried to forget it, but the words kept returning.Lucas had treated her like she was never a human, and had no emotions. However, in the meantime, she hoped to bear with it by avoiding Lucas in her days of working for the Maxwells.Scarlett had always loved children, and the day she met with the twins, something within her had bonded with them like they were hers."That's the only reason I'm accepting this job!" She angrily arranged her clothes into her box.Yet, she couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. She had always been independent and had never lived with anyone since the day she was chased out.In a short while, Scarlett was done packing, she struggled with the two big bags as she went towards the park for a cab."You must be strong." Scarlett told herself as they drove to Maxwell's spacious suburban home, Scarlett couldn't help
The next morning came in a blink of an eye. Scarlett didn't want to bump into Lucas, and at the same time, she wanted to go for the kids as early as possible. However, she remembered his cruel words and resolved to stay back for a while. At 7:00 am, Daphne knocked on her door and said. "You can come out now Scarlett, he just left."Scarlette's cheeks flushed red as she never expected Daphne to have easily read through her mind.As quick as she could, she hurried over to the kids' room and got them prepared for school as fast as she could. She ensured she prepared their meals according to their favorites as directed by Daphne. In a short while, the kids were off to school. Scarlett then returned to the kitchen to have her breakfast after some encouraging words from Daphne.Daphne soon requested that she headed back to her room to get some work done. It was still a wonder that she did not work in Lucas's company. She had mentioned one time that she did not want her personal life and fin
Lucas' eyes fell to the shattered glass on the floor, and his heart broke into a thousand pieces. That was his most cherished work of art, not because he had spent a fortune to have a glass painting of a nude woman, but because it was his wife.It stood at the end of the corridor, so he would look at it before he retired for the night, and first thing in the morning when he stepped out of his room to begin his busy day.His wife cherished the painting just the same way he did. It was the only thing that still reminded him of her, and what she looked like.At first, he had shot Scarlett a ferocious look, but as he drew closer to the shattered painting, his eyes softened.Scarlett saw something glint in his eyes, something that looked like a tear, as he crumpled to the ground and rummaged through the shattered glass as though he had suddenly run mad.She felt sorry for him immediately as he knelt there. Lucas was a well-muscled large man, and seeing him this way, she felt entirely remors
Lucas stared at Scarlett and the kids for a long five minutes, and he could barely have words to describe how peaceful they looked in their sleep. He had been worried about his kids the whole night. He knew how much they were scared of the thunderstorm, and Daphne could barely keep her eyes open at the first drop of rain. For the first time since she started work, he was grateful that she was there, and the children felt so at peace with her. He watched them snuggle up to her, and it warmed his heart. When Scarlett looked up at him, he quickly looked away, but it was already too late to feign anger. She sat up with a start, and it almost made him chuckle. She was so intimidated by him, and he liked it so much. He did not like her one bit and did not want her to feel relaxed around him."I thought I said no contact with my kids," he said to her in an upset, but somewhat calm tone.Maybe if you stayed at home with them last night, they would not have to be curled up in my bed.Scarlett s
Scarlett woke up with a start immediately after her alarm went off, put a shirt over her head, and rushed downstairs. She would not want to attract any mundane talk from Lucas.Ever since Daphne left, he complained about everything she did, and how she could barely get a simple job done. She moved about with so much trepidation that made her bump into things, and sometimes, break things as she went."Don't you have any shame?" He would bark at her. She had once thought of leaving the job. She would be better off as a barista in a peaceful coffee shop than in a luxurious home, with good pay but a grumpy boss. But whenever she looked at the kids, and how much they warmed up to her, she would always have a change of mind. She loved them like her own and she would want them to remain in her care. Days had passed and they were only getting fond of her with each passing day.Scarlett flipped the eggs in the pan carefully to avoid a break. It was the way Lucas loved his breakfast. The idea o
Chapter 10"Scarlett, would you come to our school tomorrow?" Callan asked as she served them lunch. She had had a long nap after the kids were gone to school, and now that they were back, she was more than energized to care for them."What for, baby?" Scarlett asked softly, placing the food bowl down for a bit."Tomorrow, our parents are supposed to come to school for a meeting," Claire replied to her."Did you tell your father about it?" She asked them in a concerned tone and the children shook their heads. It was not like she would not want to go to their school, but Lucas might have a different opinion, and she was trying so hard not to annoy him further."Dad has never been to our school for the meeting. Aunty Daphne has always been the one with us, but now that she is gone, we do not know who should go with us," Claire rambled on, and Scarlett listened fixedly."I will have to ask your dad first then," she said, and they nodded happily. She thought about it. Lucas was a jerk and
Lucas sat back on his study desk, the huge mahogany desk secluding his huge frame. Scarlett's voice rang in his mind. The last thing she said to him suddenly haunted him like a plague. He never thought about it in the past. He had loved his ex-wife so much that after her death, it was as though his whole life crumbled with her.He had become emotionally unavailable to everyone around him. He had secluded himself for months after her death and he had to see a therapist before he could move on. Her death still hurt him but he dared to get back to work.To take his mind off the loss, he immersed himself in work. His children were the only ones he still bore some form of emotional attachment to, but he had been so busy with work that he barely saw them.He never knew that Callan had qualified for the kids' baseball team in school and that Claire had learned how to write the alphabet without any help. He only found out these things from their teacher. He constantly ached with a feeling of
Scarlett shivered as she heard his voice. She resolved to apologize to him but he was not taking a chance to look at her or hear whatever she had to say. He rushed over to his daughter as she lay unconscious. Doctor Ezra came in just then."I heard you were around and I decided to come over," he began smiling sheepishly, as though he sought some kind of favor from Lucas."How is my daughter now?" Lucas asked him in a low voice, ignoring his sycophancy. "She is stable now but we would keep her here for a few days, just for further observations," the doctor replied. They soon stepped out for a few words, and Scarlett watched them through the blinds, as though they were deciding her fate. She saw him glance at her once but she looked away.Lucas was livid when he stepped back into the room and he did not utter a single word. He took a seat and Callan curled up to him. He took him in his hands and Scarlett just looked on as he seethed. She was at a loss as to what to do or say next. She
Scarlett decided that it would be a good option for the entire crew to return to Santorini. She had cut short their trip the last time, and when she suggested it this time, Alex was in full support. They sent out invitations and made arrangements. Scarlett added George and Daniella to the list and after the entire planning, it looked so promising.Daphne and Nick arrived the night before the trip."Left for me, I would have suggested that you both went on your honeymoon alone but since you want us in it as well, I can't decline," Daphne said as she settled in Scarlett's room. They had agreed that Daphne would spend the night with Scarlett while Nick and his brother would share a room as well. "Let's just say I wanted to do it as compensation for cutting short the trip the other time, and we all deserve a break from the cruel life we have gotten over," Scarlett said. "That reminds me," Daphne said as she took out her makeup from the dresser with some wipes. "What did Lucas say to yo
"If it's not the bride," Daphne began excitedly as she opened up the door and barged into the room where Scarlett was ready to get into her wedding dress."Daphne!" Scarlett called out as she went ahead to hug her best friend. "I thought you were not going to come anymore," she added. "Of course, you know that I will not miss your big day for anything," Daphne said. She had been a bit incapacitated the whole time of the preparations, because of the pregnancy and Nick had insisted that she stayed back and allowed the doctor to attend to her. Daniella had managed to squeeze out time out of her busy schedule and away from George who seemed obsessed with her every day. She saw the way they had their pictures all over social media, and they were equally successful chefs."Is Lucas coming?" Scarlett asked."I tried to talk to him, but he said he does not want to be here," Daphne replied."But he has signed the divorce papers already, right?" Scarlett asked. "I don't like the way he is ma
Scarlett stopped by Alex's house on her way back from a contract job. The hospital incident had taken a toll on everyone, especially Alex. He had gone into hiding, away from his house and away from his office. When his parents finally decided to give him space, they went back to Singapore along with Nick and Daphne. They all had no idea that the incident would take a toll on him that much, and Scarlett seemed to think that he was overreacting, but she could not help but think that it was all her fault. She had finally gone to Africa for the contract, but every day, she kept thinking about Alex. Raymond had urged her to enjoy herself and do her job well, but she could not help it. She called him and sent him messages every day, but he would not answer or reply. She had made a call to his housekeeper who told her the exact time he usually came back to the house. She had told him that Alex now had empty beer and whiskey bottles in his study. Scarlett knew that he was not a drunk. He ba
"What do you mean you would not carry out the procedure anymore?" Alex raged as he followed the doctor out of the surgical ward, alerting his family members. They rushed out immediately to see what was going on."Doctor Ezra, you have to give me a good explanation for all of these," he continued. The doctor stopped and turned around to face him."I think Scarlett and your mother would have a better explanation for this," he said. "I think that my work here is done," he added and walked away.Alex turned to his mother, not knowing what to expect."What is he talking about?" He asked her. His mother fidgeted a little before she finally looked up at him. "Scarlett would be in a better position to explain things to you," she said. "Can you all just stop pointing fingers and tell me what is going on?" He asked. His mother was silent. His father and Nick were as lost as he was as they were still trying to fathom what was going on, but grateful in their hearts that Alex was still alive.
Alex stepped out of the ward and his father stood up immediately after he saw him. They stood and looked at each other for a while. There was no disappointed scowl on his face to suggest that he was angry. Instead, a beautiful smile was plastered to his face. He stretched out his hands just like he would do every day after work when they were little boys. Alex rushed at his father and engaged him in a big embrace. His father patted his back gently and Alex relaxed slowly. They soon sat down at a corner and his mother came to join them."Would you want anything to eat?" She asked her husband who looked up at her with a smile."Alex teaches us every day how to love," he said to her. "Our boy is so brave," he added as he smiled at her. "I don't want to be reminded further that my son is about to have his heart out and given to someone else," she said. "Where is Nick and Daphne?" Alex asked. He had not seen them since he came out. Just Lucas sat there with his face buried in his hand
"Time for what exactly?" Lucas asked when he saw that he was the only person that did not know what was being discussed. Doctor Ezra looked back at him, but did not say anything to him, but turned around and left. Lady Abbott looked at her son Alex and tears welled up in her eyes. She went ahead to engage him in a long embrace. "Can someone tell me what is going on here?" Lucas asked again, spreading out his hands and looking around. "In case you have not noticed, Alex has decided to donate the heart for Scarlett's transplant," Daphne said to him. Lucas has become such a pain in the ass and she was equally getting irritated."What is that supposed to mean?" Alex asked with an amused expression. Daphne looked at him unbelievably. He ignored her and moved to where Alex was standing."You think that you are the hero, right?" He asked Alex. "You went behind my back to see the doctor and agree to the transplant?" He continued. "I simply did what had to be done," Alex said."But you d
Alex rushed at her immediately while Nick picked up his phone immediately to call for help. Lucas turned on his phone too so he could make a quick call to Doctor Ezra about her current situation. If there was a right time to put aside their differences and work together, it had to be now. Nick looked at Daphne as he spoke to the pilot on the phone. He saw how she was visibly trembling and he knew she was highly terrified. He went over to where she was and put a hand around her in a comforting manner, rubbing her back gently in circles so she would calm down.Once she was calm, he held her close to him. "I am sorry about this but remember the doctor said panicking will increase your blood pressure, and it's not good for the baby," he said to her. She nodded and turned around to hug him.The medical team soon arrived with a travel bus and they collected an unconscious Scarlett immediately."I called Doctor Ezra and he said we need to bring her in immediately," Lucas said as they all fi
Scarlett stretched out her hand and touched him lightly. She watched him try to put himself together properly before he turned around with a big feigned smile on his face."What are you doing out here?" He asked her calmly. "You know it's cold out here," he added. She rolled her eyes. She was tired of everyone knowing what was good for her and what was not. It was all driving her nuts and she wished that they would all just give her a break. It irritated her more because he seemed to be having his struggles but was still looking out for her like she was a priority."Why were you crying?" She asked him. He looked up at her sharply."I was not crying. I just have a cold and it has given me a runny nose, but—""Oh don't lie to me," Scarlett cautioned him. "I know what I heard."He was silent for a while as he avoided her eyes. Thoughts of what he would say to her rummaged through his mind. An idea soon occurred to him."It's about my company," he finally said. "I think we might be runni
"What did you say to her in there?" Nick asked as he took Daphne back to where they were seated initially. "Maybe if you had not rushed in there like we were planning your murder, I would have had the chance to have even a normal conversation with her," Daphne said, sounding agitated."At the end of the day, Scarlett might probably start to request answers from you guys," she continued. "You are all doing a bad job at keeping a secret," she added. Just then, Scarlett passed by and went to take her seat. "Is everything okay?" She asked Lucas. "You all came to the restroom," she added in case they had not understood why she asked."We just wanted to make sure that you were doing great," Alex was the one that answered. He stood up afterward and headed out. If he had to lie to Scarlett one more time, he might as well end up spilling the beans. He had to walk away to prevent himself from saying anything. Nick excused himself and followed after his brother. They got into another compartm
