chapter five

Casper Hallow who is the heir to the Hallow Company has always been a thorn in the flesh of his stepbrother Ryan. They were never good friends, jealousy and resentment were always present in their friendship. However, events had become worse after the tragedy that claimed the life of Amelia, Casper’s wife, in a car accident. Casper had his doubts that Ryan was involved and now that he had seen it with his own eyes Casper was more than determined to find out the truth.

As for Casper, he struggled with his suspicions, while Emily was living a real nightmare. Finally, she got a call from Mrs. Susan Hallow’s and the offer was making her think a lot while lying on the hospital bed. Was it wrong to turn her down? Would she and her unborn child be in danger now? The nurse had informed her that the hospital was owned by the Hallow family and that meant that it was almost impossible to escape.

“I will not allow Dan and Cheryl to go scot free they will have to compensate me for all the items they stole from me,” Emily said to herself as she day dreamed. He was so engrossed in her thoughts of betrayal and loss that she failed to see Mrs. Susan walk into the room.

“You really believe that you have any other option but to accept my offer, Miss Emily Roger?” Mrs. Susan asked coldly.

Emily’s head jerked up and her mouth opened in shock. Mrs. Susan further moved into the room while staring at me with a very sharp look. “You must be surprised that I know your real name,” she continued with a small, knowing smile on her face.

Finally, when Emily came to know that she has been investigated, she sighed and her shoulders dropped down in frustration. It was impossible to hide this now. “If you know my name then you also know the reason why I cannot accept your offer,” she stated as calmly as she could.

“I do not know your reasons, Emily,” Mrs. Susan said coldly, “All I know is that right now, your husband and best friend are burying you.”

“Burial ceremony?” Emily repeated, her voice incredibly soft, as the shock washed over her.

“Yes, according to the news, Emily Roger died from heartbreak after losing her unborn child and other undisclosed issues. Your last wish was to be cremated,” Mrs. Susan said, watching Emily closely.

Emily felt the room spin around her. She had known Dan and Cheryl were ruthless, but to fake her death, to erase her existence completely—it was unthinkable. Her mind flashed back to the day she’d been betrayed. The day she’d planned to tell Dan about their child, only for him to hand her divorce papers, coldly informing her that he’d never loved her, that he’d only been with her for her father’s company, which he now controlled. She had fainted from the shock and woke up in a hospital bed, where Cheryl, her supposed best friend, had plotted to kill her. Running away from that nightmare, she had been hit by Casper’s car.

Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes as she recounted her story to Mrs. Susan, her voice trembling with emotion. “Dan handed me divorce papers on the day I was going to tell him about our child. He said he never loved me, that he was just using me for my father’s company. I fainted and woke up in a hospital, where Cheryl tried to end my life. I ran, and that’s when your son hit me with his car,” she finished, tears streaming down her face.

Mrs. Susan’s heart softened as she listened. From the investigation she had conducted, Emily hadn’t been involved in any scandals or crimes. She was a victim, just like her son.

“That’s why I’m offering to help you, Emily. Leave your past behind and become Amelia Hallow,” Mrs. Susan said, her voice gentler now.

“But what happens when his memory comes back? What will happen to me and my child?” Emily asked, fear and uncertainty lacing her words.

“Amelia wasn’t known to anyone outside our close family. Even the media didn’t know about her. Casper and Amelia had a secret marriage. You don’t have to worry about the public. And as for his memory, I will take care of that. You and your child won’t suffer again. I’ll support you until you can stand on your own feet,” Mrs. Susan assured her.

Emily studied Mrs. Susan’s face, searching for any sign of deceit. “Aren’t you afraid I’ll take advantage of you, ruin your reputation?” Emily asked, her voice low.

“I’m choosing to trust you,” Mrs. Susan replied simply. “I believe in giving people a chance.”

Emily sighed, conflicted. “What was Amelia like before she passed away? Why does your son mistake me for her?”

Mrs. Susan hesitated, then spoke, her expression pained. “Amelia was Casper’s secretary before they became lovers. He loved her deeply, but I never trusted her. I tried to investigate her, but nothing came up. She was a ghost. I tried to warn Casper, but he wouldn’t listen. They had a secret wedding, and soon after, she got pregnant. It all seemed too convenient.”

She paused, her brows furrowing. “I don’t know why he sees Amelia in you. You’re much prettier than she ever was. But the doctor said it’s possible that his emotions were so focused on Amelia at the time of the accident that seeing you triggered something in him.”

Emily felt a pang of guilt and sympathy for Casper. He was hurting, and she was at the center of this deception. “I’m sorry this is happening to you and your family,” she said softly, reaching out to hold Mrs. Susan’s hands.

Mrs. Susan squeezed Emily’s hands gently. “I like you, Emily. Please, consider me your new mother. I promise to help you as much as I can.”

Emily nodded, her heart aching with gratitude. “Thank you. I’ll never forget your kindness.”

“Casper has been making things difficult for the doctors and nurses. I think it’s best if you see him. I’ll be here with you, so don’t worry,” Mrs. Susan said, her tone gentle yet firm.Emily paused for a second but then she agreed. “Alright, I’ll see him. ”

Shortly after that, Mrs. Susan requested the nurse to bring Casper. He came inside the room with a big smile on his face and his eyes were sparkling when he saw her, Emily.

“Amelia, I am so sorry for all the things that I have done to you, please, forgive me,” Casper fumed saying this as he knelt down next to her.

Emily’s heart ached at his defenselessness. “I am not angry anymore,” She struggled to say, tears welling up in her eyes, “I am sorry for the fact that I pushed you away the last time.”

“Is the baby okay?” Casper inquired, looking at her with worry on his face as he placed his hand on her belly. Emily’s body tensed when he touched her and Mrs. Susan was quick to come to her rescue.

“Casper, you do not have to touch her anymore, the baby is okay, but she needs to rest, you should leave now,” Mrs. Susan said softly.

Casper frowned and looked at Emily with a begging look in his eyes. “I have been out of your company for a long time I will just tell the doctor to bring my bed in here.”

“No!” Emily said quickly, feeling the panic rise in her chest. “That is not necessary I have to be alone.”

Casper looked confused. “We do not need privacy between us Amy,” He said smiling gently at her.

At this, Emily’s conscience pricked her and she was overwhelmed by a feeling of guilt. He was so gentle, so tender and he did not even know that the woman he loved had died, and this was her replacement. “I just want to be alone for now The doctor said I need to meditate so that the baby can grow well,” she told him, praying that he would understand.

Casper seemed to be in a dilemma but after a while he nodded. At that moment the door opened and in came Evan, Casper’s cousin.

“Sorry for the interruption, but I need to speak with you, Casper,” Evan said, and his voice was very formal.

“I don’t want to hear anything about the company right now, my wife needs me,” Casper said softly taking Emily’s hands and kissing them.Emily’s eyes widened in shock. His tenderness, his devotion—it was all too much. “You should go, Casper. It might be important. Your mom is here to take care of me,” she said, trying to persuade him.

Casper’s eyes widened in surprise. “You never called her mom before.”

Emily glanced at Mrs. Susan, who gave her a small, reassuring nod. She turned back to Casper, forcing a smile. “I guess I’m just trying to adjust. Please, go with Evan.”

Casper looked at her for a long moment before finally nodding. “Okay, but I’ll be back soon. I love you, Amy.”

As he left with Evan, Emily’s heart sank. She looked at Mrs. Susan, who smiled sadly at her.

“You’re doing great, Emily. Just hang in there,” Mrs. Susan said softly.

Emily nodded, her resolve strengthening. For her child’s sake, she would play this role. But deep down, she couldn’t help but wonder how long this charade could last before everything came crashing down.
